it is an honor to commence the 2024 Edgar Middle School promotion ceremony I'm David Dickman student council president for the Edgar Middle School class of 2024 on behalf of everyone in the class of 2024 I would like to thank friends family staff and other distinguished guests for coming to support one of the 200 students being promoted today most of us met in Moss kindergarten in 2015 as the rising class of 2028 and the class of Edgar 2024 it seems so far away then but as we grow older it's becoming more and more real leading us to today our last promotion Milestone before M from before Oh my um before departure from Metuchen to start our own new lives but this didn't come without H without oh Jesus Christ without hiccups the wind is not in my favor today when we started in fifth grade covid was in and all social interaction was out in fact our first month of middle school was complet completely online in sixth grade we were all struggling to find our place but we were able to get there by the end in seventh grade we survived an air quality incident so bad it turned the sky yellow a real lockdown and a cancelled field trip however we were able to experience the first seventh and eighth grade dance and were able to begin maturing into what we are today today or this year we over overcame the bad challenges together and with and had so many highlights such as an amazing Six Flag strip even if mine was burdened by hives that were not contagious anyway wonderful seventh and eighth grade dance the after of the NJ SL days if you know you know and beginning to get prepared for High School this year we have learned more in previous years not not because of academic mics rather most students have matured and learned many valuable lessons such as responsibility maturity adaptability focus and a good work ethic these lessons are bound to carry over into our high school experiences despite the challenges of middle school we as a class were able to overcome them and support each other through it while we started bumpy with lots of ups and downs us eighth graders are finishing our Middle School experiences wrong returning to what we had ended up to expect in Edgar honestly I wouldn't have it any other way I mean whose parents on the bleachers get to say they survived a global pandemic and were able to do school through it however today we put the crazy ride of middle school behind us and sit at a platform for the new roller coaster high school the beginning of our last but by far most difficult fouryear Journey well a vast majority of us will be attending matachin high school starting the fall semester which begins extremely early next year some of us will be leaving to attend magnet private or religious schools as we close this chapter in our lives getting prepared to start right the next we need to thank the people who were able to get us here first of all I would like to thank the administration Miss oo and Miss Evans thank you did you guys know that we are their first full four-year graduating class it's a huge accomplishment for them give them one more round of applause they deserve it they've been tough but pushed us through the their patience and dedication to giving us the best Middle School experience is unmatched next I would like to thank the seventh and eighth grade student council and advisers Miss Jos and Miss DWI and the other eighth grade Representatives being promoted today shayin Gandhi Zora havan Rose Michaels Lort and many other seventh grade Representatives add and support we were able to get here today lastly I would like to thank our entire class the memories we made together as a class in this school will not be forgotten and I'm so glad a lot of us will be attending matachin high school next year I'll leave you with this my most infamous last words before my fourth grade sh fourth grade classroom shut down for Co it will never happen is what our promotion felt like for a long long long long long long time however we were able to overcome it and do it we're here we did it and congratulations to the Edgar class of 2024 thank you okay this [Music] [Applause] works good evening my name is sori Vora and I have the honor of being here today as freshman speaker when I first sat down to write this speech I had no idea where to begin the blank document was pretty intimidating and I was feeling a bit lost this may be familiar to you as you enter High School it can be confusing and overwhelming much like finding your way out of a difficult maze with no help but just as in a maze when you're feeling lost in school it's important to pause take a deep breath and observe your surroundings as hard as it may be remember to embrace the challenges as opportunities to grow allow allow yourself to take a class that you may struggle in a bad grade on the first test and and feel like you want to give up don't forget what you're working for keep moveing forward and trust yourself to look back and grow from your experience now as you have just completed Middle School I want to take a moment to address a few more things that you should keep in mind throughout your time in high school first remember to take advantage of the opportunities you've been given step outside your comfort zone and don't be intimidated from trying something new you have a very limited amount of time in high school so it's important to enjoy it as best as you can don't be afraid to try out the club your friend dragged you to even if you currently have no interest in it it may seem daunting and like a lot of work to participate in something you don't initially want to do but embracing New Opportunities can allow you to discover new things about yourself and expand your interest remember that the journey is just as as important as the destination embrace it fully finally cherish the friendships and relationships you've developed over the years while while while high school is an opportunity for prep personal growth don't forget about those who supported you throughout your time at Edgar surround yourself with positive influences who uplift you and allow you to be the best version of yourself High School is a the place for growth and Discovery as long as as long as you stay true to yourself and work hard you will be hello you will be able to succeed and go on to do great things with with that congratulations to the Edgar Middle School class of 2024 [Applause] good evening Edward M Joyce scholarship was established in 2002 by the Joyce family to honor Mr Joyce your efforts to make this a fantastic sendoff from Edgar Edgar School staff thanks for being here tonight and thanks for amazing year your efforts do not go unnoticed parents thank you for choosing to send your children to our schools and our most precious resource your children we know you have choices and we never take for for granted the faith and trust you place in us I'm a little biased but there isn't a bad District out there we value the whole child and we place an emphasis not only on academics but On Athletics and the Arts we're at the Forefront of social emotional learning for years we've embedding cell into the Core Curriculum our students show empathy and learn to be problem solvers we are so grateful for the community support of our mental health initiative in 2019 and for the building referendum vote in 2022 big changes and exciting upgrades are coming to the district tonight I want to talk about kindness and doing the right thing Rachel Joyce Scott says I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then will start a chain reaction of the same people will never know how far A little kindness evidence over and over that this is a great kind eighth grade class your administrators tell me how Cooperative you are your teachers say how hard you work in the classroom and your parents should be very kind of in fact how kind you are our motto All year has been amazing together and I think this eighth grade class certainly embodies that tonight is a celebration so what do we have to celebrate well Edgar's school's suable New Jersey school bronze level award recipient a sustainable school's njaa Grant recipient in The 91st percentile of all New Jersey middle schools Accord according to the recent school performance report and of course Edgar maintains its National Brew Ribbon School status some something that you should be very proud of this is a prestigious honor and in my 34 years of education this is the only Blue Ribbon School that I've been associated with how about your school for the next four years matachin High School recently ranked as the number 47 High School in the state I have a challenge for you let's make it even higher in the next four years yeah let's do it do you see yourself taking college courses we have over 20 AP courses for you and this year MHS was named to the AP scholar silver award honor rooll and AP Computer Science principles it was recognized with the College Board diversity award how about the environment do you care about the environment MHS earned the sustainable schools bronze level award as well and what about Co and extracurricular activities MHS has many sports champions and has received many musical group Awards lots to do at MHS I can't wait for you to get here matachin High School itself will look very different than it does now it will have double the cafeteria space allowing for various events and a more peaceful lunchtime experience seven new classrooms a new turf field for our sports teams a new track for our award-winning track program both the field and track will be ready for September lights for evening practices games and competitions we can't wait for those for The Fall season in 2025 behind me we'll have a new Fieldhouse a second gymnasium a state-of-the-art facility that will provide much needed additional indoor space for the district and the burrow programs and yes all rooms will be climate controlled with Central AC yay so the building can be used all year long and hot days at the start of the school year and the end of the school year will be more conducive to learning and that's why we're all here Bill Walton was known for speaking about his former UCLA men's basketball coach John Wooden and his famous two sets of Threes wooden often shared these with his student athletes and with larger audience as well he would say one don't lie two don't cheat three don't steal and don't whine don't complain and don't make make excuses it's really pretty simple isn't it well his first set of Threes don't lie don't cheat and don't steal our civil laws our religious Commandments and everything you need to know about that you learned in kindergarten these are all based in some way on these don't lie don't cheat and don't steal make those a part of your character the second set of Threes don't whine don't complain and don't don't make excuses these really speak to work ethic your teachers your coaches your parents your friends all should be able to count on you not to whine complain or make ex make excuses I have a few others to add to you tonight say please and thank you as John Wooden would say it's pretty simple isn't it wear headphones or earbuds when you listen to your music in public that's just common courtesy and guys please put put the toilet seat down when you leave the bathroom please again miss oo thank you for the opportunity to speak tonight congratulations students and enjoy the rest of this wonderful [Applause] evening good evening students parents family friends faculty staff and members of the Board of Education thank you for joining me today and celebrating our eighth grade students thank you Dr Caputo Dr Herzog school administrators supervisors teachers staff and members of the board of education for your support for our students which is truly appreciated 8th graders before I continue I would like you to take a moment to reflect on the people who have supported you on this journey your parents and Guardians they have been your constant companions cheering you on through victories big and small they wiped away your tears celebrated your triumphs and championed your dreams no matter the path you chose whether it was Sports theater art or anything in between remember their love for you is unconditional and their belief in you is unwavering at this time please stand and give your family a round of applause [Applause] you may be seated another group of people that have influenced your life is your school family from the early days of prek to the dedicated staff here at Edgar Middle School teachers counselors case managers nurses paraprofessionals secretaries custodians cafeteria workers bus drivers and crossing guards have all played a part in your journey many went above and beyond trusted adults who supported you keep these connections alive as an educator there's nothing better than seeing a former students Thrive as you continue on your path keep in touch with us to share all your successes I can't believe our time at Edgar is coming to an end we began our journey at Edgar at the same time it was September 20120 we were starting at a brand new school and probably had similar thoughts will the teach teachers be nice will I fit in how long will it take for me to learn my way around the building and of course the lockers will I ever learn how to use a locker yes that was a question I had too I hadn't used a locker since high school so I had to relearn I remember that first few times I had to help a student with a locker I was so nervous about messing up probably just like you I've told many of you the inventors of lockers probably just wanted to torture middle schoolers and the adults that helped them if I shared that with you already I probably also share the Silver Lining that I was that that was that I got to talk to you and get to know you a little better as we tried to figure out our locker Silver Lining it means that even in a tough situation there's usually a small positive aspect you can find during our time together we've had some great experiences we enjoyed God tournaments dances sporting events Musicals A F fun pool party to celebrate receiving the National Blue Ribbon School award we also had some challenging times we started Edgar during Co where you were coming in every other week and had to stay six feet away from each other there was a new way of learning and it was hard to get used to but you did last year we lost a dear friend Amelia who will forever be in our hearts s through this we learned how to support each other and some of us became really close friends please keep her memory with you as you continue on your path and continue be there for each other as you have throughout your time at Edgar through all your experiences as a group I have watched you grow and connect with one another whether it was learning a valuable lesson about teamwork discovering a hidden talent or bonding with your classmates every experience has molded you into the wonderful individuals you are today as you move into High School remember challenges are inevitable but you you're equipped with the skills to find the silver lining you've learned to persevere to adapt and most importantly to find strength in your community don't be afraid to ask for your help when you need it and always remember there's always a bright side even if it's just a tiny glimmer congratulations e8th grade we are incredibly proud of you thank you for all you have taught me and making my first years at Edgar memorable take the lessons you have learned here the friendships you have built and the spirit of resilience you developed go out there find your silver linings shine bright to light the way for each other I look forward to see what the future holds for you your Edgar family will always be here
