discuss certain matters that are Exempted from the public and as are indicated on the agenda this evening they have a motion to go into executive session all in favor any opposed all right we will be approximately maybe 22 30 minutes e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e can I have a motion to reconvene the meeting all in favor any post all right I'd like to call the meeting to order again ask everyone to please stand for the flag salute I'd like to invite our student representative to make their report um so I have a lot of positives to talk about first of all I met with Miss Allen and with Mr love today and we talked about the midterm schedule and just discussed some of the feelings that students are having towards it whether that be good or bad and some miscommunications that may have happened and I think we came to a very nice result and had a lot of things talked out um um other things I wanted to comment on winter balls coming up so that's super exciting that's the dance for sophomores and up always a fun one um Powderpuff was yesterday for the seniors and juniors Juniors won 190 [Music] congrats sad for the seniors though um the end of fall Sports uh pretty much all fall sports are over football's still going obviously because of the Thanksgiving game and I just wanted to say congratulations to all of our Sports because we're pretty sure that every single High School Varsity Sport made it into the playoffs this year nobody didn't qualify for playoffs um I also wanted to give a special um shout out to cross country they were the South Jersey group one Champions which whoop whoop you guys are really good um and then we had a ton a ton a ton of people inducted into like the All Conference team so first and second team and then a bunch of honorable mentions as well football had a couple field hockey tennis soccer um tennis also we won the conference always got to toot my own horn um uh this past Saturday there was all South Jersey choir auditions for a lot of our Coral students both Junior High and high school um I believe we had 26 or 28 students audition and a good amount of them got in so congratulations to everybody that got into that um and then just two really cool things that have been happening in school Mr kenza's e8th grade classes have been going around collecting for the winter toy drive they collect toys in the offices and they also collect donations so if you have a student in the high school send them in with something it's a really nice cause um and then the other thing is Health prep Club also known as Red Cross club which I'm in um we did a lot of stuff for Veterans Day so we wrote cards to our five veterans we have in school um and we made a big banner for them and just a lot of nice celebrations but the month is going very well I don't have much else to add I think Jan covered all causes but project morial just um I think it was last weekend or maybe two weekends ago uh they just had their 5K for the veterans which is pretty cool people got some prizes for that but other than that yeah good things happening at Aon did team building things and certain grades got a study hall period which was very much so needed for a lot of our grades um I know the freshman and the sophomores had a Rock Paper Scissors Shoot tournament that resulted in a winner from each of the grades winning a Wawa gift card so people were pretty excited about that one um I know the seniors had a study hall period which was really nice to just catch up on weekend overflow stuff um 11th grade also got sort of a study hall but um what we were assigned was like we got to talk with our friends and we were in the gym so we could all just talk to our entire grade and meet in groups of people that we want to talk to but if you want to just sit there and work and be productive you could do that too so it was a really nice almost like brain break it was like a really nice way to start the week and have a good start to the week I think seven and eight did how words have wait meeting seven and eight were in the auditorium and had an assembly presented by uh Mr Le was one of the things I was going to put in my report but due to space it's hard to get a place where we can do presentations for everybody so we really have to break it up and rotate so this month it was 78 that was in the auditorium and had a presentation next month it'll be 910 the next month it'll be 1112 but there was class meetings that also happened during some of those times I'll go over some of that a little bit later great thank you any other questions for the student reps right thank you ladies appreciate it all right we're g to move on to another excellent uh point in our families need to leave to get home for bedtime or homework we certainly understand that thank you for joining us this evening and as you leave make sure to stop by our Green Bean Cafe our students are over there with goodies and um spirit wear and coffee and we're very grateful to have them here this evening thank you e e e e e we have two very um special presentations we have a presentation first from the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania good evening I am nurse Barry here at the high school um I just want to thank you for having us tonight uh last year is my first year here um and in reviewing a lot of the old policies and procedures I notic that our aad plan was very outdated and in researching how to come up with the most recent um and best policies in cardiac events um I came across Children's Hospital of Philadelphia um project Adam and uh applied for this program um to make us the second school in the state of New Jersey to receive this award so um yes so this is Dr vet and Dr metf their cardiac um pediatricians uh from Children's Hospital thanks sarin thank you for having us here first I'd like to uh congratulate all of your students and educators of the month I'm really impressed with all of their amazing qualities and comforted that when they grow up the world's going to be okay so thank you for what you're doing um so I'm a Pediatric Cardiologist at Children's Hospital Philadelphia live here in New Jersey so I have a special fondness for all the New Jersey schools where my children and were educated and my granddaughter will be educated soon and um we about um 2025 years ago began a program because I began to see children with conditions that put them at risk for having life-threatening cardiac events and some of them would cut them into the hospital and survive and we knew of others who did not so we developed a program that we call youth Heart watch to be both a primary prevention program to go out in the community and to screen individuals and find them before they had problems and a secondary prevention program to help schools and other places where children and others gather and play to be heart safe so we joined with a similar group in Chicago and a similar group in Atlanta and form project Adam um and now there are 48 such Affiliates in 33 States and we're hoping to expand it but we're very proud that New Jersey already had an AED law Janet zelinsky's law from you know 14 years or so ago and I I know the sininsky and I I'm just you know touched by all the parents who go through these tragedies and yet make this you know a positive thing so that others don't have to go through it um so the program that we have the heart safe school program provides a way to recognize schools and to help them with emergency preparedness and I'll let Megan tell you a little bit more um about that but we were so happy and and Not only was this a second school but your nurse has just done an amazing job of preparing the team so it was just so much fun and and uh such a joy to see how impressive your team was let um Megan tell you a little bit more about the program before we present the award hi I'm Megan maaf I'm also a Pediatric Cardiologist I work primarily in New Jersey so I'm at our Specialty Care Center in Vorhees I see patients in MA Landing in Camden also live in New Jersey so um you know I can't stress how important it is to just be prepared for these emergencies um cardic arrest can happen at any age and and children are spending the most most the majority of their time in school um if a cardiac arrest does happen it's typically in school or in a a School Athletic Complex so our youth heartwatch program our goal is to make sure that all the schools in the our community are prepared um should an event happen um so you know as Dr veter mentioned um New Jersey schools are required to have defibrillators a response team and a plan in place and our program can really help just fun those things and make sure that um you know the team and plan are prepared ready for action so we can assess um the number of defibrillators the um how accessible they are Avail availability make sure they're working um we can um help with the team um training make sure that they're prepared to perform CPR and respond an emergency and have roles assigned um we can help um review plans and make sure that the plan is ready for action and um we also can uh attend drills where the team gets to practice um their skills and be you know more confident should a real emergency happen so we had the opportunity to attend a drill with Sarah and her team here at oton high school last month they did excellent so they um started CPR within one minute of the code being called and they were able to deploy a shock from the defibrillator within two minutes which is gold standard so they really did an excellent job the team communicated very well um they had some great thoughts during our debrief for ways they could improve um but overall really did an excellent job so um we're really excited to award her with the heart sa School designation um we have a banner that can be hung in the school and um you know used to show families the community other other groups that you know use the facility the importance [Applause] of so we're hopeful that oh my goodness that is just tremendous that is tremendous um Sarah on behalf of the board just thank you so much for your efforts and pursuing this um we are most grateful for your continued um diligence for the health and the safety of our students here in the Junior Senior High School and uh and we know that it will expand to the other schools in our district too and we thank you uh Physicians for joining us as well this evening and uh for all your accolades thank you very much congratulations [Applause] next on our agenda we have um an update about our high school special education program so we like to welcome Miss Binger good evening I'm Noel Biser I'm the supervisor of special education here for the district and I have Bridget G banel we're going to be co-presenting together um thank you for this opportunity to share and celebrate some of the work and progress we've made toward improving we ask we ask for it that was awesome that was awesome okay um thank you for giving us this opportunity to share and celebrate some of the work and the progress um we've made toward improving special education programs at um oton High School school this has been a long-term Vision um that is coming true and uh it's very rewarding to see it growing and evolving in the ways that we want it to um but most importantly serving students in the ways that they need the updates we're highlighting tonight have been focused on enhancing work and life skills preparation for students who are in need of of this kind of postsecondary Readiness uh We've called the overarching program our wave conveniently our wave program standing for Workforce and Vocational experiences or education um and to start out uh we developed a committee uh we took a close look at specific courses that were already in place to help us move toward these goals those courses being independent living um work-based learning and learning information for employment or life our life class and then we moved on to reviewing and updating curriculum for two of those three courses and updating a course title for work-based learning um that was formerly structured learning experience so that's aligned with New Jersey Department of Ed expectations and then um we considered student feedback in our um in our decision making so we took directly from Individual students their post-secondary interests and developed a list of Community Based learning opportunities and career exposures um and I must introduce our presentation by thanking the team of Staff who've met regularly and dedicated their time and energy including Bridget G banel Dennis banel yes the banel are everywhere um Patty Myers Griffith Chris Harris Nancy Scully Stacy Augustine and Jillian MC and this has certainly been and will continue to be um a team effort however Bridget banel has been tasked with taking the lead for us um and she joined us more recently bringing about 20 years of experience in this area 20 am I right a little bit more 26 years um and uh what she brings in experience she matches with enthusiasm and energy um and I can't thank her enough for her individual efforts so I'm going to turn the presentation over to Bridget to kind of share in Greater detail how we've put our plans and ideas into action for the wave program and also inclusion overall at our high school thank you for letting us present tonight um I definitely want to thank our wave crew and our UniFi Champion club members over there so John stand up John wave Ella Tula Casey Grady George and Harry over there so thank you guys for coming tonight you did an amazing job um also I want to point out Casey broadhurst over there she is the designer of our green bean t-shirt over there and also a member of our UniFi Champion Club um so way to go case everyone loves the [Music] shirts um so I just to go through a little bit about what's been happening um since September um since Noel has given me um the opportunity to have a perod to work um on these types of activities and experiences um with the w program and also our whole building um so before I start I mean definitely want to thank Noel for bringing me on board and definitely Jess back there um for bringing me on board I was 26 years at Cherry hle West I have five kids that have come through here too that are still here my husband's been here for his whole teaching career um my coach basketball here um also the varsity assistant soccer coach here um so making the switch was a hard decision since that was my home since I was 21 years old but I'm glad I am here and able to kind of bring some of my experiences but also just to work with such amazing kids and such supportive administrator so just want to thank you guys for that um all right so couple things that we have going on here we have a work-based learning class um that is our third period class um that's with some of our older students um where P that's Patty um Patty Myers's class and uh she works on Career interest inventories with those students um all real work-based learning activities go on in there so um just application processes working on those financial skills developing those soft skills those interviewing skills and then we put into place the kids have been working down in the cafeteria and rotations during um this first and second marking period so they work um two at a time they go down to the cafeteria you see some pictures here they get help prepare for lunches so they're working in that aspect right now and then um as the third and fourth marking periods move on we're going to look at other experiences within our building um so that they can transition through some several other different type of work experiences here um they take a lot of data down there we have an educational assistant that's down there working on their goals and their IEPs um their work rated goals we meet with them Patty meets with them during the other periods and they review their work skills you know their strengths their weaknesses what can make improvements so that's something great happening during the third period with um our classes we also have for the next slide um Dennis runs um the living class which is ran first period so they do a lot of cooking they have baked all the cookies and the muffins um for you um they also work in the stock room so they're in charge of delivering all the supplies to the teachers the teachers fill out forms uh of different kind of supplies that they need and Dennis's students go down to the stock room here and they they make all the deliveries they're in charge of interacting with all the staff members the administrators the administrative assistants with copy paper they get it all independently they deliver those to all the offices they go around who needs you know different things so they're also working on those skills in that Independent Living class as well um so working on those communication skills organizational skills um just delivering and just being able to talk to everybody in the building and be able to give them those supplies that they need so that's another class um where the kids are are working hard down there and they they're working hard in the kitchen too making lots of different things you'll hear about some of that stuff in a little bit um so then we have two things in the morning where breakfast Express that's on Friday mornings that's with um Miss um Patty's life skills class so that's her period one class um so they set up down um in awing for the teachers that come in in the morning the students come in and they work down there they sell coffee kind of it's like kind of our green bean but it's headed down there in the mornings donuts and bagels and coffee and the students run the register they talk to everybody coming in and uh they work on all of those kind of skills the money related skills the communication skills they review um same thing with the soft skills there are younger students so they're getting prepared for those work-based learning skills um in her classroom and then also with the breakfast Express we have here tonight the um Surf Shop so that is the clo shop so that is um Dennis's area also as well in his Independent Living class working on this customer service skills taking inventory deliveries preparing those orders for anybody that um wants to come in and buy some awesome Autobon gear all right now this is what we've been up to so they're all of um the classes but since September um all these bullet points um some of them are on our board agenda for tonight for December um but this is what our students in the building have been up to so we had Bud Rudder who did a career presentation it was amazing he did a whole group presentation and then the students were asked who would like to see more of Bud's job and then you know those students that were more interested in the field that um bud is talking about and wanted to show the kids a smaller group of students shadowed butd around for a first period and he showed them all of the ins and outs of the building and the secret rooms that nobody gets to go into it was a pretty pretty cool experience um for the students um to be able to go in they asked incredible questions so that was also an extension to a whole group and then we narrow those um students down that they're more interested in that career and then we actually go on and and show them more of that did and we have one more coming up October 6th November 10th and December 1st we all were serving over in Philadelphia for treats on the streets so we work I work closely with Jean um For the Love of Pete's Pantry so I had built this relationship when I was at Cher H West um for many years I worked with her and I just brought that over here to otton um the things that I was doing over there um at Cherry hle West so we've had of of our UniFi CH Champion club members as well as our way students go over to the city with us and we have made Zs 12 Zs um in the independent living first period class next week on Monday and Tuesday we'll be making 12 macaroni and cheeses um during first period so that um our unified Champion members our partners and our wave students pair up down in the kitchens and we just oversee it and they kind just let it all happen so it's not us doing all the work it's all of these guys doing all of that work so they'll be making 12 Mac and cheeses that will be deser um that will be served on December 1st over there for their Thanksgiving feast and we'll also be going over there to do that as well we just on November 10th served 300 meatball sandwiches so we had 1,000 meatballs donated by our unified Champion Club families and wave students so I had crock pots upon crock Poots in my kitchen umbs in kitchen so we had 350 rolls donated um and then the kids came over some of those guys that are over there were over there serving those meatball sandwiches we also had 250 soft pretzels donated um from ANA in Oaky um that we brought over there um that was served so you'll see definitely more of us doing more of that as the years as the year goes on but we've done those three things so far um October 7th our green bean open um the WG line family has made a do generous donation and we're so excited it's in the process of being built down um in Williamstown right now it's an L-shaped countertop um that'll be a permanent structure in here um for that so we'll make sure that we do that really big when that comes in um but we're looking forward to that so right now we're off of these little tables here um just for the kids to kind of get that experience but it's going to look so amazing pretty soon um so we're super excited about that um Dennis's Ela um class for his um younger students went over to see Miss Sherry's Autobon preschool class on a walking Community Based instruction experience um so these are not field trips um these are skills that are taught in the classroom and then we're going to take those skills out in the community um so his students were practicing really hard on reading um books Halloween books to the preschool students the speech teacher came in um so many staff members came down as the kids practiced in rotations reading their books and how to point out the pictures and ask questions um they also made a craft for the little kids to do so they cut out everything that needed to be made and they were the leaders over there with Cher's class um they also worked on Street safety um Crossing at crosswalks looking at our signs at the traffic lights they stopped at waa and were given five dollar five one bills and they were allowed to work within a budget and they had to make sure they knew how to round up and all of these skills were tracked and assessed when they were out there so yes it's a great thing but we're also tracking we're looking at that data we're seeing the growth that they're making on those safety skills and those Independence skills and just being able to communicate and relate um with the kids so that was an amazing um experience and Miss Sherry said let's come back over here to the high school so December 17th uh Miss Sherry and then also some of the other um classes from there will be coming over to us and the wave students will be putting together an activity um for those students to complete and they'll be the peers for them as they come over um so look forward to some great things if you're all more than welcome we can let you know when that's happening if you wanted to stop in and see it in action you're more than welcome to do that um we have December 11th another incredible um service project and Community Based instruction experience we're working with our ESL class so we've already done our meet and greet um with our ESL the kids are paired up they did a awesome introduction getting to know each other we talked the project and we are collecting monetary donations that we will shop with at Five Below and Walmart on December 11th for teens that are in domestic violence safe houses so this is also through um the love of Pete's Pantry thanks guys um so that is our students our ESL students and our wave students will be paired up they'll be out in the community they're going to be given a budget we're meeting again on December eighth period the kids will come together they'll know how much money they have they're going to have to look at the websites they're going to have to look at Five Below they're going to have to look at Walmart they're gonna have to think what do teenss really like you know like um we do this project because a lot of times lots of the little kids get a lot of the little presents it's easier to buy for the little kids but the teenagers you know they're kind of that forgotten group especially at the Holiday times um so we're teams so say what do teams like let's go out and shop for those teams um so again working on communication skills budgeting being able to pick out gifts that are within that budget being able to pick out the goal is going to be for them to each get three to four gifts per group um when they go out and then just seeing the interaction between the ESL class and our students was was an amazing day um so we'll be taking um a school bus over there for for that but they'll also be going to eat lunch so that'll be restaurant Behavior that'll be knowing how to clean up our trash when we're finished saying thank you ordering our food um being able to sit and have a conversation without a cell phone um so there'll be all those things that we're going to be working on um with our students while we're out in the community shopping navigating a store um being able to pay for our items you know we don't have bags so we have to bring reusable bags now and put those in and um so sometimes now there are self checkouts so scanning our items and being able to pay um for things so all of those skills we're doing amazing things but we're also tracking all of those skills that our students are going to need in order to become more independent members um in the community then December 18th um we are going to take our first um New Jersey Transit experience so we're going to take the bus has anybody ever taken the bus here before New Jersey Transit yes okay um so we are going to get on the 457 right out here on Edgewood it'll take us right into Haden field um so again reading a bus schedule being able to manage our time um we are going to meet up with Colleen which is Bud rudder's daughter who is um running the unified over in Penfield she's trying to get it up and running so I also did M Cherry Hill West was a UniFi Champion school we'll get into that um so I familiar with unified so coming here it's awesome um so we're going to take some of our wave students as well as our UniFi partners and we are going to go meet up with them and the three big Ideas well we're going to do a little white elephant from the Dollar Tree as we meet their students but we're going to be talking about three major things so it is going to be a big kickball unified game between haddenfield and audabon in the springtime held out here on the Aon softball fields um and then our walk for acceptance so our unified um both our unified clubs are going to be able to come together and help us with our walk and some of that money will be donated toward Special Olympics um and then a service learning project we're going to definitely I'm very big into service learning project so we're going to definitely do something together um since New Jersey Transit is right on that same rout um so lots of things upcoming also taking some kits to the um unified youth Summit AT cinamon High School on December so that'll be our three partner pairs three athletes three partners and we'll go and meet other kids from other Unified Schools there as well and then we have our green bean okay so green bean we're open right now Monday through Thursday periods one and four um the students from Dennis's Independent Living class and students from um Miss gff's Class come down um and they work in the green beans so kids in the study hall they like it because they're allowed to get some of this stuff in here so some kids say we wish we were in fourth period or first period study hall so right now that's when we're open um the staff get coupons for their birthday they can call down we're gon to get um Mr um Leb got put in a request for a phone line because then we're going to work on the kids answering the phone at the green beam taking orders from staff if they need to use their coupon and they're in class and can't get down so that's a plan in place once we get our countertop and things in there um but the green bean again such a great place to work on all of these skills that the kids are going to need um when they go into the Work World um so all those awesome skills I know I'm sorry I'm talking a lot all right another incredible thing here the unify Champion Club so we just started it this year this is I'm just in my second year here so last year we did the Unified sports but we didn't have the unified Club piece um and that's something that I definitely wanted to come in this year and and do so we're we have 55 members in this UniFi Champion Club so being a UniFi Champion School we're part of the Special Olympics um so we follow different things that they um have we can um be a part of all the things that great opportunities that they give to the UniFi Champion schools the main components of a UniFi Champion school is whole school engagement inclusive leadership and then the Unified sports piece of that so if I'm G to be truthful I think that our school is so incredible and I think that whole school engagement and that inclusive leadership is just if you came in here and saw our meetings or UniFi club meetings you have no idea who St what students all their unique abilities are everywhere to be seen um and the kids are just so involved um in the in the school doing lots of different things like we're doing a thing with our art class harly Burton's class we're doing massive gingerbreads um so our her unified it's our some of our unified Partners but her AP art students December 3rd is going to be the making of these gingerbreads call the Food Network okay I think we should send them out um but they did went and they decided all of their designs Ella's G to make a big beach house right El your gingerbread with her partner um so it's just an amazing thing to see all of the kids interacting in all of these inclusive activities that we have and such great leaders we have um in the building too so you can join our Instagram my son Trent is I'm not very good at technology with the Instagrams and social media but you can join our Instagram and see some of the great things that um have been accomplished so far um we do a ton of these service learning projects um and then I also want to mention too that our little guys at Mansion a school so I'm involved in the some of the little sports teams and the basketball teams um so we had a four station lemonade stand with our little Mansion AB Future Leaders they're going to be our future when they come up here into our UniFi Champion club and they're out raising money for us to with at um Pete's Pantry so if you happen to be driving around town there were four stations of little girl soccer team the gold diggers um were out and about and they are going to be they're they're some of those little guys that came over to the city with us they're collecting for the interact they're collecting so they're going to be coming up here and they're just going to go right into it okay they're just going to become a part of everything that all these great things that are happening and we're just all C all of our unique abilities that's what we're doing with this club um so look out for us we're going to be doing njsiaa bowling this year so we're going to be competitive we're going to be bowling against other UniFi Champion schools keeping score I was just on the coach's meeting last night and then we're also going to be doing the track this year and trying to get in at least one or two track meets against other UniFi champ um Dennis and I we cleared out this back spot in the garden in the back here over the summer and we want to start that UniFi Champion Garden um in the back so I had a school garden at West and it was one of the most amazing things ever where the kids were able to grow their own food they're able to cook their own food in their Independent Living class they're able to give that food to the community um they're able to use esy as a as a place to come over and get those vegetabl help with those things growing um businesses on Merchant Street like you go in there and they a lot of those buses use fresh vegetables we want to use some of our fresh vegetables from our garden stop on by pick what you need um so and then also just teaching the kids how to grow their own the importance of healthy eating and just appreciation and respect for the environment so that's we're going to be planting in the out there we'll send some vegetables so that's a great big plan and then I just wanted to include so just take a second to kind of just let these pictures sink in like what do you see in these pictures um it's just these are these are all the things that the kids have been a part of um so far this year all these different groups of amazing students that we have here at aine high school and you don't know who is here okay they are all incredible individuals with so much toer World um and and working together to help other people working together to become more independent um feeding off of one another so you saw it tonight these guys here um so then the next slide to there just some more dances activities out in the community our pin Button making um just it's just an incredible place to work so I just want to you know that no you guys here like it's just an incredible place to work and I'm so happy that my five kids are getting an opportunity to come through here um and have the experiences able to if you have any questions can always ask me and one last slide um this is my plug for our parent committee uh CPAC is our special education parent advisory committee so it's an opportunity for parents to bring it's a it's a forum for parents to bring um ideas and work together with the district on topics like inclusion like acceptance that we have in in years past um and an opportunity to dialogue and meet we meet virtually which seems to be very convenient for everyone usually 6:30 on Thursdays um three to four times a year so if any parents are watching or um um want to join um please we would we would love to have more parent membership so [Applause] thanks thank you thank you so much thank you for this presentation I did have the um the pleasure of seeing this presentation at the last CPAC meeting so um instead of like cheering from my office now I get to cheer in person um just yes yes yes and yes I mean that is just remarkable just what an opportunity that you're providing for our students so thank you thank you thank you can't wait to see where we go absolutely [Applause] absolutely any questions just a brief question the unified Champion Garden has that been done yet or is that what you're planning to do like in the spring that is a plan I did put in an a grant um will and we'll just keep work on different things so um a grant awesome and I hope you get it but actually at uh the njsba um Workshop that some of the board members went to I went to a for Farm to school program and there was a whole bunch of information and they were talking about how when schools make their own Gardens and stuff they have a lot of grants in their own programs and stuff out there and also with the I believe it was the New Jersey Department of Education because it's a whole thing so that might be something to look into because I believe you you definitely would qualify okay definitely that's thank excellent any other question comments all right great thank you again thank you so much well done all right um at this time we have a need to go back into executive session so may I have a motion for second executive all in favor can't really oppose but any opposed all right um maybe 30 minutes e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e not even gonna say it superintendent and District's report sorry I do have a few things I want to report I know we're long on time but um 170 students in the first marking period have perfect attendance that would be no unexcused lates or unexcused absences we're not taking excused into account but for the first marking period um there there's a bowling one one bowling that donated a bunch of free bowling things to us we got a bunch of uh 250 for each building so the high school's going to use that call the kids down give them certificates and make a big hoo-ha over those that have perfect attendance we know the number will dwindle as we go on in the year and that we intend for our prizes or Awards to get a little larger as we go up and again it's for anybody who doesn't have any unexcused lates or absences so we're very happy about that on October 29th 276 students took the PSAT uh 78 students had a regular day the ninth graders came in and did some aabon history and a movie the 12th graders had a class meeting and then some class activities on that day we had a delayed opening letting people know what happened with that um obviously on Halloween there was Halloween parades at all of the elementaries that were very well attended I went to each one it was a lot of fun I saw some of you there all the parents were there they very much appreciated it we had the most gorgeous weather I think in any Halloween I can remember in fact I ended up with heat stroke by the end of the day for my costume because it was too hot uh but the kids really like it was perfect the kids I was a witch um purple black and purple wig with a cloak it was yes and the kids walked the block and everything and again with the weather it was gorgeous it was perfect for parents for pictures for everything it was a very very nice thing it was fun to get to participate in that as one of my first Autobon things um on November 18th we had our am session here at the high school for the teachers to have PLC time to have their first professional learning time the seventh and eighth graders all went to the auditorium and had a character Ed presentation about Power of Words and kindness given by Mr Leb the ninth and 10th grade they alluded to the activity that they had done that was run by hoe and Mr um Mr how and Mr Miller the 11th graders had a junior class meeting and then also had um an activity to do and the 12th graders did in fact have a study hall I talked to Mr Leb about some ideas on ways that we can do things that are a little bit more in line with career in College Planning digital system citizenship character Ed he's already talked to the municipal Alliance about having some free speakers come in one of the biggest issues is become is on that day when you have 800 students finding places to put them and have people to supervise because when all the teachers are doing plc's you have about 10 to 12 staff members to monitor the 800 we don't have a whole lot of space we can use the gym but it's not conducive for some of our presentations we can use the cafeteria but you can barely fit more than a class in there so we're trying to be creative and come up with some different areas and find things that fit with the different presentations that we want to do but for a first one we were happy with how it we're very happy that the teachers had that hour to work and we got a lot of really constructive information from them I shared at the um HR committee last night working with linkit we got a lot of great information the teachers at the high school went through and we found some areas of concern areas of need of work like our transfer students our students coming from M Fromm our choice students there's a lot of gaps in the data we have from them as compared to our other students and it really impacts at high school level so these are things that we're become aware of and we're going to work on some things to fix so it was a very worthwhile um use of our time um midterms has come up it was supposed I think students wanted to be here to talk about it I just want to address it real quick uh the plan has not fully been pulled out to everybody and some of the concerns that Jane mentioned when she came to us today uh they were under the impression they're doing two exams a day that is not the plan the plan is to have full days the plan is to have one exam a day one one hour session in the morning and then they will visit all of their classes for 33 minutes each so they will have one exam a day over eight days stretched out over eight days the day you have study hall you will come in at 9:30 a day that you have lunch you will come in at 9:30 but day one will be period one exam day two will be period two exam day three will be period three exam and they will still see every one of their classes for 33 minutes again the honors the AP the classes like that are concerned 180 days is already tough to get through your um your pacing guide then when you take off five days for midterms five days for finals days for njsla you're really cutting into these things and with a 43 minute period AP test is when AP test is we can't change that we can't push that back the more times that the kids are missing even though it's 33 minutes and not the full period it's enough to be able to keep things going and you're seeing them every day so we had said and when we talked to her about that when she said one exam a day oh my God that makes me feel so much better already I thought I was GNA have two exams a day and still have to do a day of school work the reality is you have to be able to do a an exam and still function the rest of the day you can't say my day is over I had one exam so we were talking to them about life skills and preparing them for things like that so we wanted to address that real quickly the other thing we have in print on here that we're not going to go through is that we did have a wonderful trunk and tree event at the preschool and we had a lot of volunteers uh we wanted to shout out those volunteers they're all here in Prince so that everyone can see it the National Junior Honor Society the in intergenerational club the interact Club the high school field hockey the high school cheerleaders the board of Head ottobon Park fire department the ottobon mutual amhc and maintenance and the Haden Township Police Department it wouldn't have been the event that it was but without all of those um parties being involved and lastly as a new member to aabon I went to night out of the races on Friday it was quite an experience something I've never done before had a lot of fun left with some gift cards played with some funny money and bet on Races it was a good time I didn't win any baskets but it was a lot of fun it was a neat event I will definitely go each year but it was fun to go and support and be a representative for the board and such we did have a race our race was named the Green Wave Derby so thank you for your contributions to the AE I know they were um most appreciative um okay thank you Miss Allen any questions for Miss Allen on the information that she shared about the midterms um I am hearing from um my child and their friends that a lot of the teachers are complaining about midterms the time that it's now eight days the truncated course classes and so maybe just check in with the staff that like they have issues to bring it up to Administration and not be disseminating in the class all the time agreed it was actually discussed last May or June in faculty meetings that this was coming based on what happened with last year's but I think it's just a to complain and yes I have a problem with that being brought to the students but yes that is something that we plan to address I actually after last board meeting talked to Jeff about it and said we have to have at a faculty meeting discuss discuss time and place and how we have a lot of venues and and ways for them to come to us with concerns that's not really the way to go about it there was some teachers that I would not expect to hear about this and they were the most vocal and so that was kind of spurring the kids to not really be receptive to the fact that yes you do have a full day but it's just you know it's only one test and they were kind of spinning it in a very negative manner like change yeah at all okay any other questions all right um before we get too far into the meeting I wanted to um let everybody know that Jonathan Maxon informed me that he's not going to be able to attend the meeting in December and I know that's not very remarkable except that we don't know if Jonathan is or is not going to be returning as our rep it's beyond his control it's beyond his control um so um so I I I did not want to miss the opportunity Jonathan to thank you for um being such a a wonderful and important and um an amazing contributor to H to our board you you hit the ground running right away we um are so grateful for all of the time we all recognize that you go to m E's meetings as well as ours and we were very meeting heavy this year especially when it came to our superintendent search um you've always had a heart not only for the students of Mount Ephraim but for all of our students in Aon um your input and your Insight and your contributions have have been invaluable whether it was on committees or full board or or during our search so we have greatly enjoyed our time with you we hope that it will continue but in case it doesn't I just wanted to recognize your time with us thank you Miss Davis and uh I want to thank all of you guys you know everybody here on this board that um I didn't know anybody coming in except for what Nancy gave me some Intel and you know jumped in and it was a superintendent search and uh all of you really embrac me with open arms I have an immense amount of respect for every single board member here uh Miss Allen uh Miss Ronis uh miss guren everybody who has you know who make board so special uh what's so unique about this board is that we can have a difference of opinions but is never personal everybody is advocating for the needs of the district and it's something that should be commended um so thank you thank you thank you uh I hope it isn't my last meeting and who knows maybe within the next you know January 2026 maybe I'll be back um but if it is uh I have gained so much from this and aond is going places so thank you thank you very much all right may I have a motion please to approve the minutes for October 9th executive session and October 9th public session roll call please wson Jim bloomenstein sorry Stephen you're abstaining from V Cox Mark Gaddy Sarah kulin Alison lipsky Jonathan Maxon yes Andrea Robinson Bill Wilson Amy Davis motion passed all right I'd like to open the meeting up to public participation for agenda items only and um the parameters that we have set forth are noted in the agenda there anyone there's nobody here literally is there anyone here from the public that would like to make a comment seeing none I will close that um public participation session and move on to governance I'd like to recognize Miss lipsky absolutely uh so we met on Monday and for our first read we have the physical examination which there really wasn't it didn't put a whole lot going on there um that's sorry my apologies let me go there I'm a little bit not in the right head space Sorry second reads physical examination nothing too crazy there nor with the curriculum um count done some minor little changes of you know teacher staff that type of thing or it would just say you know put the instead of an it was just minor little things um in regards to number um regulation 5200 we also did add did review policy 5200 as well just to make sure that every there were no major changes and that they weren't aligning with each other um because we only got an update on the regulation but we reviewed uh the policy for 5200 and no no changes were needed and so everything was fine there in regards to curriculum content uh we also looked at the the policy was updated we also looked at the regulation and we just added a line in there that just basically gave the superintend the ability to have kind of a catchall in case there was something that didn't fit under all the parameters of what could and could not be in the curriculum that they could then review it consistent with the policy to deem whether or not it was acceptable to be in the curriculum that's all we did that's what we changed with the regulation and that was consistent with the policy update um now in regards to the first reads this was the pupil Suicide Prevention um that was something that we were looking at and we had some questions because we were talking about certain costs and the like but we had um Miss Garen answered some questions and then we also looked at this and we added just I believe line that just specified that we would only be responsible for payment of a clearance examination but not anything further and then we did have some detailed discussion where it was very clear this would be a situation of not someone that was an impatient that in order to be able to be um successfully discharge from impatient and go back to school that's something the clearance is kind of already part of that we wouldn't be responsible for this this is more of a situation where there might be some things seen there's some concern they they're not allowed in school they're going into some type of pro like treatment programs but it's not impatient but then someone's saying they can come back we're going to make sure that they have a clearance exam so that in accordance with the law and that's what we paid for but we made it very clear that we're not paying for all treatment and that is also consistent with the law um firearms and weapons so basically it was a change in the title to say firearms and weapons and not just weapons or not just firearms and they had the change basically was just taking away a lot of the definitions of things and just saying look at the statute um but coin pointed out that it was a little sloppy because they talked about a record but then took away the language as defining what the record is and how the record is made so we kept that language because since you have to have a record and have certain things on it we figured it would be important that we had what the record was and how it was created not sure why Strauss Esme just took that out but I think it was they did that accidentally but we were like saying there has to be a record in consistent with the law we're going to make sure that it it says what the record is and how it's done so we just added that to make sure that everything was nice and clean and that was done for the first read and um let me see just looking at make sure I have everything and it looks like I don't even have to say what I was going to say because it's already been removed I do love that when that happen okay and so that was essentially it there were no major changes in um attendance there it was one major change and that was just adding Civic event and so that you can go to I believe depending on your grade but it was like based on 11th and 12th grade you um uh you can go to like one Civic event a year or unless you can show why you needed to go to those Civic events and as as it's in writing and shown you will have an excused absence it was just created a new category of Civic events and so none of us had a problem with that because we think that's important and so that's been added and that's what's going on and so we are recommending these to be approved for first and second reading second I could be misremember but I think um it was maybe the regulation for curriculum content there were some um proposed changes that did away with a lot of the language that had been there about um that was non-bias and things like that that's because it said you had to go back to the statute and we said okay we can go back to the statute because the statute defined all those things we weren't we were like fine but we did say that we were keeping we were adding that line that they didn't have before which would allow the superintendent to be able to have a catchall to approve or disapprove something based on sagittary law okay so we were just putting that one additional line in our exist regulation as opposed to adopting the new language that was given to us yes okay yes in um 5350 and um Miss lipsky I can just send this to you but there's um page one paragraph four it it references a board of education Healthcare professional I don't know that any of us are Healthcare professionals um but I'm wondering if we need to add the word Board of Education appointed healthc care professional um and then page two paragraph one the last sentence it just kind of ends with and are not required by law to what I'm not sure to what so if if governance can just I'll shoot that shoot that to me so I can look at it in that yeah because if I don't have it in front of me I can't 100% yeah it's just just legal e and I just want to before we approve it I would just want to make sure that's all and this is a first reading so exactly yeah exactly perfect yes if you just get that to me um I'll be happy to look at it any other questions or comments for items one to two Okay roll call please Jim bloomenstein yes Allison Cox yes Mark Gaddy Sarah kin Alison lipsky yes Jonathan Maxon yes Andrea Robinson Bill Wilson Steven Wilson Amy Davis yes motion's passed thank you I'd like to recognize Mrs Cox for operations we did have a meeting November 13th our next meeting is being rescheduled so that's to be determined um we did uh in our meeting some some very wonderful things the tree Grant project is complete so if you get a chance look to see the fruits of the labor it it's a wonderful paron pictur pictures will be coming um and that we do have a two-year warranty on the the project so that's a good thing uh the gym floor is complete again again let's just hope no the drain the drain everything okay we did tested drain is the drain is again okay so we're ready for basketball wrestling and anything that we that goes on in the gym area um all the uh dprs District performance reports um are completed for the NJ qac the quality single accountability Continuum okay and they're on the agenda for approval this evening good um pretty proud huh the anacronym get me so I'm gonna speak them out um uh we also discussed uh both the 2024 and the 20 uh yeah 2024 25 and the 2025 26 budgets uh the midyear budget forms were submitted to the county and we have the calendar for this uh upcoming budget 25 26 on the agenda for approval tonight um we discussed the projected preschool enrollment we're looking to add three additional classrooms okay so that's a very positive thing and uh the prechool enrollment and operational plan are on the agenda we have received two donations this month um 75 bowling vouchers to be used at hav for the students at havin mansion and audabon High School Junior Senior High and then also $10,000 from the class of 1964 to be used for student centered activities and supplies so um that was what came out of the meeting um I I just want to state that we you know and I've said this every month so far it's a very tight budget okay and we have services that we're going to be needing to um put on agendas we didn't budget for okay and that I mean it's it's a scary kind of thing not there yet but we will be you'll be seeing things coming and um the fact that our insurance has increased 14% that was not budgeted okay we did budget an increase but not 14% um so as we go into the new budget year preparation we need to be extremely mindful of uh what's important and what although it's all important what we can um possibly put on hold for a little bit to just get through this this time um you know we something to consider is we may receive flat or decreased funding it's happened in the past years so we have to be mindful of that um our costs for running the district are ever increasing never decreasing you know so we just have to be very continue to know that the budget is tight tight tight and we need to continually be careful when introducing any unbudgeted items okay all that being said it's been on my mind so much that New Jersey school boards had a workshop this past uh October and I had to look up the name of the class Sandy and I sat in the class it was called is your District ready for the fiscal cliff okay kind of scary so um it is some that so the the classroom was let's say maybe 200 capacity we were filled it was standing room only the Proctor wanted to close the doors and people pled with him to not close the doors because they wanted to hear it they couldn't see the panel but they wanted to hear it and um I realized it's not just an anomaly to Aon we're not the anomaly it's the entire state of New Jersey so that being said um we just need to continue to think outside of the box to be able to provide the education that our students deserve keep the facilities where they need to be and um just be mindful to the taxpayers as we go through so you'll be hearing much more of this but we want to continue to to keep the education where we are and our children to deser deserve for us to be moving forward with educational Excellence so that's where I just want to be um so the agenda items we have the board uh secretary reports for August and September the cash reconciliation ports for August and September the transfers for August and September bills list for October and November number the safety drills as listed four Grant requests and a resolution for the comprehensive maintenance plan any questions comments or discussion on non-agenda items under operations all right oh yeah can we come board comment okay all right um may I have a motion then for items one through 25 under operations any questions comments or discussion on items 1 through 25 all right roll call please Allison Cox yes Mark Gaddy Sarah kulin Alison lipsky yes Jonathan Maxon yes Andrew Robinson Bill Wilson Steven Wilson Amy Davis yes motion's passed thank you like to recognize Miss Robinson for education conf e Marky Sarah Cen Alison lipsky Jonathan Maxon Andrea Robinson Bill Wilson Sten Wilson Jim bloomenstein Alison Cox Amy Davis motion's passed for for number nine we set the rate correct it comes from the budget document for 2425 school year uh it is all based on their their their budget um you know it it's a a formula could be based on you know the what their budget is versus the cost per pupil is different in each School District to come up to correct yes however however what happens is we right now this is from the budget for 2425 in in a two in um we're gonna close out the budget in 2425 school year the state we send them the our school registry with the audit they come up with certified rates those certified rates then we can go back to these school districts and if it's higher or lower we can adjust what we right now it's a projected you know an estimated tuition based on our budget certified rates come out two years later we go back to these school districts and you can do an adjustment whether they might owe us money or we might owe them money okay does that help I don't know if anyone can answer this but on number five um it's about the field trips and there's one um it says for December 6 cinamon in high school it says $18 bus cost I'm assuming that that's a typo and it's supposed to be 180 but because there's others that are 190 or 200 um so I was just curious if that seems likely to be a typo we can check into that point of clarification on number one Mr Wilson Stephen Wilson said that he was abstaining because he wasn't here last time except we don't have the date is November 20th is that that's a typo it's supposed to be last month's is aren't those the ones that we approved yeah that's what I was me Sarah kin Alison lipsky Jonathan Maxon yes Andrea Robinson Bill Wilson Steven Wilson Jim blumenstein Alison Cox Mark Gaddy Amy motions passed all right moving on to Human Resources the human resources committee met uh last night topics for discussion included reviewing open positions in the district and we talked about a couple of agenda items we also discussed the practice of splitting stiens you'll notice that there is a motion for that on the agenda um we reviewed again about how our contract is clear on how many personel are assigned for each particular club and or activity and we um have asked for a review of the occurrences of how many times this is coming up where stiens are being split either for sports or clubs or activities we'd like um a historical perspective on how often that's happening um Miss Allen gave us an update on progress with her goals and all is in order you can see the agenda for her notes and as a negotiations update we have a strategy meeting planned for Monday November 25th and our next meeting with the uh administrators Association is set for Monday December 2nd so on the agenda this evening there's a motion to authorize the superintendent to approve emergent hires prior to a board of ed meeting that was a standard practice that we had in place so we wanted to make sure that that continued it's a motion to approve several retroactive hires uh motion to approve two resignations motion to approve a learning disabilities teacher consultant approving our clock Andor security Personnel for basketball and wrestling motion for several FMLA requests and medical leaves of absence there's a motion to extend a long-term substitute appointment motion to approve Personnel is listed to prepare and present workshops motion to approve Personnel is listed to the instructional Council motion to app an academic coach and a recorder Club at Mansion Avenue hope your plugs are included I speak from experience motion to approve paid and unpaid winter coaching positions and motion to approve Title One salaries as mandated and motion to approve volunteer Community Education um and just as an aside we we talked about this a little bit at Human Resources too I don't know that we've taken the opportunity to acknowledge all the volunteers that we approve on our agenda we approve many sented positions we approved many paid positions on our agenda but you'll notice that each season when different clubs and activities come up and different sporting events there are an awful lot of volunteers and as volunteers ourselves as unpaid volunteers ourselves we we we know what kind of sacrifice that is so just a thank you to all of the volunteers that are approved on our agend does alen do have anything to add all right any questions comments or discussion on non-agenda items okay can I get a motion for items 1 through 33 under Human Resources second okay any questions or comments or discussion on one to 33 under Human Resources Missy number 19 I believe this is absolutely a typo um it says that Miss the the individual's data return at least for us is saying 24 April 14 instead of it should be 25 it's correct on the agenda but for the little bit it's the actual motion is correct but our description is is is there's a desp so that there's no confusion we're not going backward in time yes I do have um question regarding 26 because it just seems as again we're getting back to the the half stiens and everything we approved uh the assist assistant varsity coaches um last month for a half stien and the varsity coach for a full stien and uh the cheerleading coach for the full stapen so I the the the change is now they're changing the half stiens and they're actually adding monies and subtracting monies and that's really really pulling away from what the contract says extremely pulling away from that and um I just feel like you know there's a contract and there's there's something to follow and we're already struggling with the half stiens and now it's even more um changed and not even so sorry thank Can it can we change it to say that now e to on where are we procedurally I procedur procedurally I have a first and a second okay a motion to withdraw number 19 pardon me a motion todraw um vote on that by itself or strike that want a motion to am amend to withdraw now the main motion you are debating on now are all items that you you have am that motion in the last meeting um forgive me for not what number justed FYI I I researched this when this question came up and we have approved in July August September we have approved banf front National Junior Honor Society and another sports team I have it written down that all took assistant coaches and made them 50/50 that have been approved already this year so but this taking the amount from changing the amount of the head coach not not July not this year this my understanding is this conversation came up about not doing the 50/50 and they were trying to get rid of it and quash it and whatever but it's happened already for this since since this contract and this the July but the subtracting that ,000 and putting into is not and when I talk to the union about it I'm like that's not an amount amount that's in the contract so I don't understand how I can board approve 6625 if that's never actually stated in the contract doesn't make it right but it's different than the others because the others were just splitting this the the assistant splitting the assistant is one issue but this is yet another issue the amount is there the amount is legit it's just splitting it into two portions now they're saying I'm taking $ thousand doll from this person and putting it on somebody else that's totally different than saying this amount is being split between two people I have no idea that was my question it came to me as it's always been done I did more research after that and now I and one of the reasons that HR right correct that's one of the reasons that HR and operations is looking for some historical perspective on how often this is happening what sports clubs or activities it's happening in so that we're better prepared for the next contra because F so I I approach the the athletic director to ask it again it's not just Athletics it's band front it's Junior Honor Society it's happening in lots of things but I asked and they said that you'll lose coaches otherwise you need more bodies out there and I said well then how come that's not what was put in originally you said you needed one head and one assistant how come it wasn't one head and two assistant it changes year to year it changes depending on the number of students to have 40 kids out there and everybody engaged you can have two people out there but they can't handle 20 kids so you're going to have kids standing around idle if you want those 40 kids to be this is what I was told I didn't say I agree with it to say that you're going to have four of them at that stien is a budget problem though right we don't have the money to pay for assistant coaches well I understand that we didn't have the budget for that they're budgeted for one lead and one assistant because that's all the money that there was but they're saying that they can't run it with just one head and one assistant there's too many kids for two people to be to be in charge of it and have those kids engaged in working out at a practice have to right well that's and that's what I said and they said you know there's no more money and in the budget to do that like we're cutting things are divide BAS P practice again and it's already happened even for things within this school year right the 50-50 correct only the 5050 the 5050 was already approved in October so there was no need for this um so presumably you could have one full-time head coach one full-time assoc assistant coach two halftime assistant coaches Etc but then only fill certain positions so if you had two that want to do the halftime you don't fill the full-time assistant coach is that like a way to okay all right any other questions under Human Resources all right uh roll call please then lipsky 1 through 33 withdrawal of 26 yes Jonathan Maxon yes Andrea Robinson Bill Wilson stepen Wilson Jim blumenstein Alison Cox Mark Gaddy Sarah kin Amy Davis motion pass our hi district report and then we have our special program Representatives Mr Steven Wilson anything for ed services is nothing interesting exciting or relevant to aabon uh but I did have a conversation with Miss Allen uh being mindful of the budget uh to ask if she has developed a relationship with the CCC yet to see if there are opportunities for shared services which is exactly what they do to see if we can find some Savings in there and I believe he wanted to say a few things about that uh at this County Superintendent at Services came and spoke to us deia Daniel DEA I think is his name um and and asked for individual meetings with people each superintendent to get some ideas flowing about what different things are needed in the district so they can try to help us out with those things it ended up that Haden Heights Haden Township and I all went together so ficaro Bitner and I all went um we talked about like an AI consultant things of that nature we talked about mental health things that that could be done since the three of us are smaller and together and it's something that we can't sustain on our own but if they could help us with things like that um third party threat assessment type things we were saying like when when you're seeing if somebody needs crisis and things like that to have a third party do it instead of having to go to a integrated Oaks or whatever to have something of that value we also uh talked about some CTE and other job um Readiness career Readiness type things that each of our districts would definitely benefit from but don't have the facilities or the means to do it that maybe if we could do something combined and then there was another one with um joint virtual slist learning type um uh opportunities so we are in the in the vision stage still but they we had a really good meeting and we got a lot of really good ideas out of it so they left with they have a good bucket of money to be able to do stuff with they want to figure out where the needs are so that was kind of what the conversation was about thank you right for County School boards Association Mr Maxon is that is that hybrid again oh it's not at a restaurant yeah yeah yep all right uh Mr bloomenstein Ed Foundation uh Miss Robinson community outreach well I suppose our big one is going to be the Strategic plan so we do have that that's going to require a lot of community outreach right so I think that's something we're gonna maybe flush out tomorrow night yeah yeah we'll flush that out tomorrow night all right um Mr Gaddy anything for ad and um miss lipsky anything for board member orientation check that off my l any we do it after terrific thank you thank you for coordinating that um and that does remind me Mr on case we need to maybe firm up a date with our intended new board member to meet with her all right uh any other board member comments board member comment about the December meeting for governance um we are really trying I think we all are on the same page that we would like to see um audabon be a leader in Ai and policies as a board and as a school district um so I did send everyone information from the New Jersey Department of Education uh also if you look at like one of the weekly waves from Miss Allen the high school has already kind of had a I guess kind of like a professional development about Ai and talking and they did a whole um little survey and she has I be I believe like five teachers most from the high school but like a cou one or two from um Mansion H I think Mansion I don't think we had anyone from havlin um who said that they would be interested in being part of a committee on AI and AI curriculum and policy and so the December meeting for governance we are going to do a collaborative Deep dive and so uh we have asked Miss Allen to have administrators there particularly um Sheamus and Leb and I'm sorry I couldn't remember Sheamus's last name and then it was like Burke so Mr Leb Mr Burke uh as well as those people the teachers who want to be a part of of this and then um I've asked if Mr Maxon is available because this is something that I know that is very near and dear um and then Helena is going to be talking to Mr Leb to create a survey of the students to get kind of their take on what think are good things about Ai and bad things their concerns and hopes and stuff like that so that we kind of get us by and they have that so we have the students perspectives we have the teachers and staff we have the administrators and we have the board and we're that's the Deep dive we're doing is to look at basically where we want to go for policy and curriculum type of stuff uh for AI so the hope is that by the end of this school year we will have a polic and regulation on AI that we will be using moving forward into the 2526 school year um and we've had a all of us have kind of had little things as we went to the njsba and kind of got some little here and there that's how I knew about hey let me check into the New Jersey Department of Education and then also Egg Harbor Township has done a really big thing and we're trying to get information from them so that we can but what Miss Allen has discovered is we would be first in Camden County to do this and I think that would be really nice um it'd be great for us as a school district to be kind of leading and Cutting Edge in something and particularly in something that is so just exploding and moving forward in so many ways so I just um you know if you have any questions queries concerns that you would like you know me to bring up in that meeting please do not hesitate to let me know because I'll make sure to bring that up in the meeting so that everyone's voices are kind of heard as we're really collaborating and then obviously we're coming back to you as Board of the whole um any other board comments I wanted to quickly congratulate Miss Co and Miss Robinson and Miss Cox on the election results a couple weeks ago looking forward to working with you again and we look forward to Miss Mitchell D Francisco is joining the board as well can I say something I just want to recognize Rachel uh Miss Allen's um secretary or Administrative Assistant apologize um I've just seen some things coming out from your office that are just really good yeah she's she's doing a she's she's grasped her tasks and moving forward with it and I I think you know behind every great woman is an also equally great woman okay so thank you wrong I I am however considering the late hour I I have that that's that was my next thought yep um uh we were going to try to firm up our committee dates for December and January however it's 10:45 and it's late um so I think maybe we'll we'll try to do that in um in a a shared dock just just to make sure that we know when each committee is meeting there's um holidays and things like that in December and January so we'll we'll send out that make sure each committee knows when it's meeting and we also have to Circle back to Workshop 2024 recap date not now that's something else that we need to look at I I don't think we really want to put that on the calendar for December so maybe we'll either push that to January or you know maybe put that in the retreat yeah yeah you could definitely be in the retreat have some time in the retreat there you go I understand that all right um can I say one one more thing hang on hang on hang on can I say one more Mr Wilson yeah Mr Steven Wilson Mr Steven Wilson I had the opportunity to review the qack self-evaluation with Miss Allen and I want to say that it was very thorough um apparently Mr Burke and Dawn I don't know her last name Miss Billy put a tremendous amount of work into it and I was very impressed with all the sourcing and the organization and the evaluation and I think we should be very proud of our district for the thoroughness of that and uh hopefully the state will agree with us and maybe even score us a little better uh but I just want to make that and I thank you for um being the one that was the board representative to take a look at that I enjoyed going it through through it with him because it gave me an opportunity and he was he was very um attentive audience and ask good questions was able to show things I've done qack in probably four districts now and I have to say I think that what Mr Burke and his secretary did Dawn did was by far the most organized of any that I've seen also I've worked at a lot of lower performing districts so it's the highest score I've ever seen on a you sa it was very exciting I realized we haven't gotten ours back from the county yet but the I mean the eyes are dotted the te's are crossed it is amazing you have everything accounted for a big portion of it is based on achievement scores that you don't really have a say over but all the stuff our agendas are efficient effective everything is there that needs to be timelines are hit it really is nice it's hard walking in and having to do cusac on stuff for the last three years when you weren't here because it's always like oh God what am I going to get slam for that I wasn't even here for and I'm actually excited about this one I mean everything is in very good I want say working order but it did take a lot of work to put the stuff together they have lots of pieces of evidence and it's all assembled and you know technology helps quite a bit and everything's just linked in there but it it's a it's a 61 page document but it is so clear and like I'm amazed I'm just really impressed I and I even went to both of them today and personally thank them both I think they did a great job with it and it's a very great presentation of aabon of what you've done over the last three years but to be able to put that all in one document and say look here's one way that you can see everything you're asking for in this U accountability thing all of it's there thank you all right um public participation number two on any not anything at all sure state your name and your address I am Nate witz I live 428 West graes RAV I am a student here at aabon uh the sophomore class secretary actually I have a petition here with over 200 signatures including 24 teachers um about the problematic uh changing of our midterm schedule and a lot of it comes from the way the is written up it leaves little time for students to study because by extending it to full days we now don't have that extra couple hours to study for the next day and that's and activities aren't cancelled for um midterms which is a because that time of year is like very vital towards activities and their success with sports being like entering championships and stuff so you're going to students up later studying leaving them little time to sleep before bigger tests or not studying because they want to get better sleep before tests um and then another problem with the idea was the schedule is built with an idea where you're going to take one test a day and then go to classes after and what happens if there's a first period and like a seventh period that are the same level and the teacher doesn't want to move on without the other class the other CL is still studying from the midterm while first period takes while the first period took theirs the first day and seventh period is studying because the first period then won't have anything to do all that week mixed with the fact that most teachers I've talked to have been um also disappointed with the idea that they're gonna have to be grading schoolwork at the same time as reading essays and Grading those for midterms which is already taking a huge chunk out of their time um I have this kind of written up I have a copy for all of you and I would also like to give you the petition with all the signatures the first page is teacher faculty just and like you when you said um earlier like I forget who said someone was they were talking to the students I didn't none of them SE me out I went and talked to teachers about this and I asked them for their opinion and if they and I asked them if they wanted to if they would sign the petition so I I'm just saying like none of them yeah I was like none of them were looking to sign it a lot of them I talked to and they just happen to agree with what I was saying and said that they would like to sign yeah have a copy of the things for all of you sore I'm the SOP class secetary I was on the counil last year thank you else wishing to make a public participation comment uh my name is Mason Barry I live at 509 ccraft Avenue I have various concerns regarding your ideas of implementing generative AI into the curriculum as an artist generative AI directly hurts me and my work as the very as the very models that they make steel artist's Works without consent both Visual and literary and then reuse them in a way to create something that to put it and I guess somewhat flowery language cannot match what a human could make with a lot less soul to it than a human could make and I believe implementing AI into the curriculum would would be a major disrespect to the artists of the school in the art teachers of the school that is all so much and also I would just ask that you talk to Helena and when that survey comes out please take it and write down your thoughts concisely because we do want to hear your voice and we are that perspective is important to us okay thank you thank you just a quick piggyback I don't know if anyone got to review all of the U feedback that the teachers gave on AI but there's actually a few teachers that have similar concerns everybody is not 100% positive or on board there are teachers who are equally concerned about the direction and and things of that nature and it's fair it's valid anything new when calculators came out everybody had fears about what that was going to do to education when Google came out everybody had fears about how that was going to affect education it's another thing that there's fears about there's a lot of fear about the unknown but as with many things I think if we structure it and do our our due diligence we can try to help it but it is worth it takes some time there's a lot of data there but there are teach that had some input that that mirrors what we just heard as well all right um we will not be going into another executive session our next meeting oh heavens there it is our next meeting is Wednesday December 18th at 6:30 here in the high school media center um that's our next board meeting however I'll see everyone tomorrow night at 7 where we have a meeting uh scheduled with Dr oswal to um start our strategic planning planning um can I have a motion to adjourn the meeting all in favor any opposed enjoy Thanksgiving um well see y all tomorrow night so take care for
