or roll call Miss jurny Miss contanza yes Mr thoric yes Miss jeie yes Mr imonti yes Miss Levy yes and Mr Sno yes motion carried item six on our agenda is approval of minutes uh we have one and two need a motion to approve those two please so moved second thank you roll call please miss jurny yes Miss konanza yes Mr fedori yes Miss jeie yes Miss dranti yes Miss Ley yes and Mr s yes motion carried thank you and item seven on our agenda is our new student representative Mr uh Hoffman uh we will turn the floor over to you you can let us know it's not that much is happening right now in the summer but you can fill us in on what may be happening that we don't know about um well good evening uh to everyone joining today um I just wanted to kick this off with a little introduction about myself uh my name is Daniel Hoffman for those of you who may not know me but you can call me Danny I'm a rising senior at Barnette High School this year and I will have the honor of serving as the BHS executive student body president for the 2024 2025 school year if you folks have attended a board meeting in the past few years you would know that I've always had a big plans for the student body and the high school at large these past two years I've worked to found both the future Business Leaders of America Club as well as the speech and debate team bringing the district closer to that commitment to a well-rounded and enriched educational experiment um I've also brought board events and proceedings into the sight line of our student body to the likes of the BHS Fe tour project and the formation or dissolution of Select clubs and policies I feel the need to underscore now more so than ever the importance of students having seat not only at this table but everywhere that decisions are made on their behalf this board's decisions affect one group the most over everyone else and that's the students every decision every policy every vote every motion affects the students in one way or another that is why I find it so important to make our student voice heard for months this board has continuously talked about the importance of teacher rights and student and parents rights but I've what I've yet to hear once is a discussion on the importance of student rights in their own education this year will look a lot different for students overall and it is my plan to continue to build on the district initiatives that work towards reinstating the student voice and recognizing student achievement as well as supporting working to support the student growth both academically and personally so here is where I lay out my plans for the student body over the next year this year I plan to form a student union a body dedicated to protecting and advocating for student rights and Grieves as a sect of the student government historically student government has really only been focused on dances and spirit weeks and all that's great and all it's not exactly work for every student in our district as a student government we also have to start giving back blood drives food drives donation runs care closets Good Neighbor projects we've fallen short in philanthropy but not for much longer it's also important to start streamlining Communications with students many of them are unaware of District or school events and as a result student participation and involvement faces a shortfall that is why I plan to bring a monthly newsletter to every students inbox keeping them in the know for all things Barn get that are crucial for them to know and not from an administrator because let's be real who loves an email from Mr McGee I also plan to build upon the process of recognizing students for their unique academic and educational strengths at the high school we have limited recognition for Meaningful work in select subjects or areas we have a few honor societies but only in World Language the Arts and social studies but students in the school may not excel in those subjects or domains and it's crucial that we acknowledge them for their strengths whether that be in math or business or English those students deserve that recognition which is why expanding Barnegat honors programs is of the utmost importance not only that but but some students perform well in the classroom but even better on a field or a court or in an auditorium or on a stage or in front of a microphone which is why we need to expand the bandwidth of honors chords and souls that students are celebrated with at graduation the day in which their High School career comes to culmination and their ethic is celebrated barnegate puts a great emphasis on this idea of the whole student and seeing them for their full worth so let's celebrate the whole student their entire resume of accolades and their uniqueness in talent and performance adding to that we see students who Excel with high grade point averages all year in class but do not perform well on large tests like midterms or finals which thereafter hurts their grades and their High School transcript being as the high school weighs midterms and finals as the collective 20% of the students grade point average as this custom across the state it's imperative that we begin a finals optout policy for our highest achieving students who fall as victim to midterms and finals not only as an incentive to work harder day-to-day but as to off also offset the Stress and Anxiety surrounded by midterms and finals this year it'll be my goal to establish that policy with a GPA requirement so that our students know we care about their work ethic and that there is reward in working harder and reaching higher it is also important that we work to reform our program of studies the way we've tracked students in the past is no longer working today there are courses offered by this District that see fleeting numbers of student enrollment every year whether due to accessibility rigor or lack thereof or even just interest in general the way we set prerequisites restricts our students from going the extra mile and expanding their education in any way they please this year the high school is not able to run a section of AP Calculus BC One of the most advanced math classes in the country the high school is also not able to run a section of AP Human Geography either at a certain point we have to look internally and say hey why are these classes falling off of our master schedule and how do we fix it giving every student an equal and Equitable playing field in their education is truly my main goal this year last month my predecessor Jane havid said something that really resonated with me and should resonate with all of us she said that there is still so much work to do here in terms of equality inclusivity progress advancement enrichment and overall curricula we are just getting started looking toward tomorrow it's essential to realize that barnegate has so much potential and can be such a great place for Change and progress in education if we all begin putting our best foot forward for the students um now Switching gears to something more traditional for the student representative I wanted to fill you folks in on a few events going on relatively soon and at the beginning of the school year um our seniors have already sat for their senior portraits kicking off what is sure to be an eventful year for them and the rest of our students um those should kick back in just about a month um students come back to BHS on Wednesday September 4th and the way our schedule shook out this year we are going straight into the thick of all of our high school ra ra Spirit um our first football game is away on August 29th at Toms over East with kickoff at 4 5:00 p.m. um but the week after the boys will host freeold burrow on the 6 with a 6:30 kickoff at the big house homecoming this year is also on the earlier side uh homecoming spirit week will be the week of September 16th with theme days um our annual bonfire will be on the 19th the honoring of the homecoming court at the game on the 20th and our dance will be on the 21st um and I also just wanted to give a quick shout out to a few Educators leaving us today um based off the agenda U Mrs dancer and Mrs kahill both of you have had such an in impact on my journey and education um especially Mrs kahill who served as my class adviser for a short period of time your hard work has made a great deal of influence on not only me but our students in general and I thank you both for your time in Barnette and at least for now that is all for me I'm very excited to work alongside those sitting on the day today as well as those on the other side and making Barnette the best place it can be for students today and moving forward as I've said before I encourage anyone with questions concerns or interest to please reach out this year we will go toe totoe on decisions that impact all of us but is what is so special about barnegate is that there's Common Ground we can all find and if we work together we can begin the long road to progress sooner rather than later uh I think you with that and yield back thank you very much uh Dan Mr Hoffman um and just to again I love the uh the depth that you put into this and thought and everything uh moving forward again great to hear you know ideas coming up just a couple things to oh you sit down sorry sorry that just a couple things on a couple of your comments um as far as I know you said that the that you would love to be part of every meeting all discussions that we have again that by law you can't do um nobody even the public can unless you are a board member be involved in general discussion confidential discussion um stuff like that and any ideas that again that the class or that you or individuals on the executive board bring up again would go through the administration through Mr McGee through your counselors um work through them up to Dr lwis the board is the last stop on it so the board does not make decisions on The Daily running of the school the last stop is the board to make those final decisions we don't Implement um on a daily basis the administrators uh run the schools on a daily basis we make the decisions when it's brought to us um at the end of the day but we don't enact them in the schools they do so but again love the enthusiasm and love that uh again having a broad big plan going into next year changing things is always a good thing nothing wrong with change so appreciate it all right next on our agenda item number eight is committee discussions I'll go through each committee um Finance I'm not sure you handing it all right Finance I'll turn it over to miss konanza okay thank you Mr Sno uh the finance committee met on July 24th on tonight's agenda there is for approval of the monthly motions payroll bills list board secretary and business administrator report um the committee members and the business administrator discuss certain purchase orders regarding travel reimbursement as well as purchase orders for vendors for services services that were ending for the school year of 2023 2024 you'll also see on tonight's agenda Grant applications for Ida Grant and for es Esa Grant um we have some uh donations which we'd like to uh thank um the people who donate um one is from the lighthouse venue Women's Club of borate um they donated some school supplies United Way of mammoth in Ocean County they donated some uh bags for personal hygiene items the Rotary Club um donated a summer feeding program which they partnered with the warehouse Methodist Church and also the American Legion Post 232 auxiliary donated Suber feeding program which we partner with the warehouse Methodist Church and as always we'd like to send out a big thank you for those um also on the agenda is the njsiaa membership um this is a motion to approve the New Jersey state inter Scholastic athle Association a nonprofit Association of public and non-public high schools in the state of New Jersey which authorizes Barnet School District to participate in the approved athletic activities sponsored by the njsiaa and our next finance committee meeting is scheduled for August 27th thank you okay thank you very much president I just got few things that we can clarify there uh can you guys hear me or no yeah yeah uh I believe was item number six rental Transportation contract is that the name of the company or what that is the um those are the contracts that um parents are driving yeah the parents are driving is it out a District student yeah all right that's reimburse just want to make to get reimbursed gotcha I haven't seen that I don't recall seeing that before in the past I was just curious think this is the third year at that par fine okay um and then item number 12 the toilet waiver yeah assuming that's prek yes and that's the waiver that we we've been doing every year we've been doing that since the beginning we did all the upgrades to make sure that it was up to all right yeah there's been a while since I've like classrooms that we have to do the waiver for yeah it's there but we have to do it for the prek yeah for the waiver bathroom has to be within a certain amount of feet of the classroom and visible and uh the two newer classrooms the bathroom's directly across the hall so it's right there thank you all right everyone else good on finance good all right thank you I think it was the 20 a I had the 20 oh yeah the 27th the 21st 21st oh okay I'm sorry it's the 21st and so to seven yeah all right thank you I love the old school with the book Thank you all right uh education committee is up next Mrs churny is chairperson 23d the education committee met and went over several key motions and discussed various topics we'll see on tonight's agenda we're making a motion to discard outdated textbooks from several courses and we are approving new College University placements continuing education requests and field trips a discussion on the process and criteria for approving field trips was had with an emphasis on the necessity and educational value of each trip the committee also discussed the work-based learning program and upcoming career day plans aiming to include a wide range of professional participants and that date will be for October 14 the director of curriculum provided updates on the summer reading curriculum writing projects the new Ela standards and the integration of AI in the classroom proposing a structured approach to its usage Additionally the committee considered the process for adopting new books for the classroom and the media center we're awaiting further direction from the superintendent we also have good news to share in June it was announced that Asen Harker's essay as sixth grade student placed third in the middle school essay category at the peace Islands fourth 14th annual art and Essay award ceremony congratulate them and our next meeting will be held on August 20 thank you Mrs Cherney um next up is health safety technology and Mr imonte is the chair thank you Mr Sara uh the health safety and Technology committee held this meeting on July 25th at 9:45 a.m. at the meeting the following topics would discussed on the health the cardiac response teams are in place at each of the schools uh each team has five members all trained and certified in CPR and the use of the AED uh also all ads are checked and uh monthly by the U and logged by the nursing staff as required by law and that was under health safety uh the security coordinator advis the committee that the Raptor system that I spoke about that last meeting uh is implemented in all of the buildings uh this gives another it actually what it does gives you a visitor it manages a system the system screens each visitor and alerts if there's a potential um Potential Threat right uh also under security uh the door alarms have been placed in select doors in the high school along with warning labels to prevent students from walking out on their own um also the facility department is in the process of numbering the exterior classroom Windows uh in all districts uh and it will be completed by the end of August this would make it easier to identify the class room uh just in case First Responders have to come in and do not have access to to the main entrance they can identify the classroom from outside where the incident may be uh District cameras are working however security is looking into identifying uh blind spots and correct them by adding additional cameras right that's under safety technology the business administrator discussed with the committee the leasing plan for the new laptop for for all staff members and Chromebooks for students uh the technology department is upgrading the finds um updating excuse me the findes in the standard operating procedure handbook for the coming year parents will be notified and uh recycling uh the old technology equipment will be uh scheduled to uh be recycled in the month of August uh the district committee held its monthly meeting and at the meeting they reported that there has been a decrease in work compensation and also uh in bus incidents any questions I have a question sure um you said that they put alarms on selective doors how did they select what doors to put the alarms on was it did they have did they have like some sort of um I'm I'm assuming I don't know how they selection process when that would be I'm assuming with the high school principal uh doors that would be accessible to students where they can easily sneak out so to speak and that's what where they will put that the alarms and the uh labels on it okay so are more going to be added or only on these these few right now this yeah the select ones okay to see if they they correct the issue of unless I think I think uh this topic we could probably give you a more complete overview uh not so much in public I try to try to avoid talking about some of the security protocols and stuff like that but we no it's not a problem but we could absolutely uh outline you know which doors why those doors were I didn't want to know what doors but what criteria did they use to select the doors yep we could absolutely cover all that okay all right I'll put that on for next month's HST we can give a complete breakdown of that okay all right thank you no more anything else anybody else no thank you Mr armonte um next up is personnel and I am the chairperson Personnel we met on uh August 22nd and as you can see it's a very uh full plate on on the agenda because again in the summertime we have a a lot of movement a lot of people moving other the district retiring resignations new hires um so it is uh I think right up until today um things are in motion so as you can see you know there's still a lot to fill um I know we had a lot of discussion on that that has to get done by August meeting so it'll be uh changing more over the next month but uh it's what it is all right and that's it for committees next up is superintendent highlights and comments I'll turn the floor over to dras all right very uh thank you very much uh first uh welcome Daniel it's a pleasure to have you at the day um so welcome uh welcome aboard um tomorrow I was brought to my attention that there was some confusion over Sports triy out so there's a lot of information that uh Mr Jana was able to bring forward so tomorrow I'll work with Mr Jana we'll put this together in a concise memo that we'll send out to the community so that everybody will be aware of um you know when those Tri outs are and what they can expect there um congratulations you'll see on the contract obviously pending uh board approval but congratulations to Bea and ABA leadership um you know I think I could speak for the the board and saying that it was a collaborative process and it was a you know very cordial collaborative process where I feel like uh everybody in the room kind of had the best interest of the students the district um and and all the stakeholder groups in mind um as we rolled out these agreements so uh congratulations to their leadership and and thank you for the uh the partnership throughout those processes um two teachers that uh put on in social media but I just wanted to take a moment to recognize here uh Briella uh patano was named the Applebee's above and beyond teacher essay contest uh what's really uh unique and cool about this is that a student in her class uh uh nominated her for this so she was selected and honored uh through Applebee's uh we're super proud of her uh that's really really awesome that falls right in line with what we talk about when we say barn and inspiring um so congratulations to bellaa and uh second uh congratulations would be to Megan vanderp who was also recognized publicly uh through the patch and their partnership with T-Mobile uh to recognize and support appreciation for teachers um she was also actually in this case nominated by a former uh barnegate educator and uh recent Hall of Fame and duck D um so big shout out to Megan vanderpal so it's really uh we have a lot of really amazing staff here so it's really nice when you see um them get highlighted from outside uh uh entities like that um with that being said I'd like to transition into um Mr germano and honoring Mr Gano so before we uh Mr Sno and I welcome you up well actually why don't you start coming up and we'll talk about you on the on the walk um for those of you that uh uh did not hear uh John was uh uh a recipient of the athletic director of the Year award um so round of applause uh in my time uh getting to work with you over the last decade um I you know I think it's very evident and and uh to anybody that interacts with you the passion that you have the dedication that you have um and and really what you bring to the table day in and day out I think there's a few things to really hi uh highlight um that really stand out to me and it's it's one of the things is opportunity is one of the words that comes to mind and always talking to to you and hearing about like when you look at our school and the size of our school compared to a lot of other schools we offer so much uh opportunities for our students here um from middle school up to high school and so many different opportunities for students to get involved and that's really a testament to the uh the work that you put in to grow that program over the last you know number of years uh to to get it to where it is right now so uh and and really in recent history we've started to see uh some of those programs really went at the highest level which um really again is a testament to your your dedication and and whatnot the other thing is uh that really stands out to me is uh and you always hear this argument if you listen to sports radio and stuff like that is the idea of the Triple Threat athlete and that's always something that's been uh I've heard you say since the first day that I met you here way before became a buzz or anything like that where the idea was moving away from from athletes that just hyper focused in on one sport and never had an opportunity to do anything else or develop their bodies in other ways or get involved in any other way and uh you know again another unique I think awesome thing about baring at high school Mar of high school is is you've really made it uh I think something that's popular to involve yourself in not just one thing and to get involved in the different sports and the students that choose to do that get highlighted with you know uh Triple Threat uh swag and get a barbecue up on the field and and really get uh you know uh recognized and rewarded for uh stepping outside of their comfort zone and doing multiple things like that so I think when you blend that with the amount of opportunities that's the the reason why we're able to offer so many things is because you've uh really set the tone at your level to encourage students to participate in these different sports so we may only have a population of just under a thousand kids uh but we offer you know pound-for-pound we offer you know more than most and and all those programs realize success because of that that philosophy and Leadership so uh this is very well deserved uh we have a present for you and a a plaque for you and uh we'd like to just take a moment appreciation where you can out we got you [Laughter] in thank you so much I'd like to turn the mic over to Mr M I'd like to invite up uh Miss terara lamantia please if you want to uh take Center Stage here so you'll be on the camera with Dr L wh we just wanted to take a few laps and try to get my steps in congratulations thank so ladies and gentlemen this evening we're proud to recognize the remarkable achievements of terara lantia a graduating senior of barnegate high school Tara excelled academically achieving the class rank of ninth in this year's graduating class Tera demonstrated exceptional leadership as a member of National Honor Society roaa and as executive officer of student government she also represented barate school as one of two student delegates for the high school at girl state in her junior year Tara's dedication and hard work did not go unnoticed although she was not recognized at this year's award ceremony in June tonight we honor Tara's commitment to academic Excellence her many contributions to our school community so with that Tara please accept this certificate and our top 10 medal and recognition of your class rank of ninth in this year's graduating class graduate all right and I think without further Ado I will turn it back over to you Mr son all right thank you don't worry all right next up is President marks info just a couple things I think Dr La was already touched upon and not much happening in a sum I mean except behind the scenes um but within our schools uh again on behalf of the board I'd like to thank the leadership of the B uh bate Education Association and the administrators Association um this is my third with the Bea negotiations are fourth that I've done and about the same with the administrators and I can honestly say it was probably one of the smoothest um negotiations we've ever had um you know it was wrapped up pretty quick and uh I think everybody was happy on each side um there was really no contention with anything um so again on both of their leaderships and their their members uh greatly appreciate it and hope everybody is happy with the uh outcome so and secondly again on Mr jamano on behalf of the board and again myself knowing John as long as I have um couldn't say hey a better person deserving of it um from the day that this High School opened I know John has always been about two things that always stand out to me with John is uh building tradition with barg high school since it was a new school when it opened few you know 12 14 years back um trying to build tradition making our students feel like um barnegate is the greatest school to be at um and just knowing John even before I got on the board it was always you can come to Mr Jano John sorry um with any idea that you had as a parent as a student as a um there was even people here that weren't I remember Bernie would come to every meeting um any idea that would be brought to the table John would take it and try to do something with it listen to you try to incorporate it somehow within the district um if it better suited and better uh represented our kids so again we couldn't have a better uh you know ad and uh welld deserved and congratulations again John all right with that we will go into public session Bara Township Board of educ the Bara Township Board of Education appreciates and welcomes public comment advice and suggestions especially when is intended to assist the Board of
