##VIDEO ID:nAHrobK3_5s## e e e [Music] good evening everyone and welcome to the New Jersey Motorsports Park my special guest this evening is the mayor of milville Ben romic Ben how are you Mr Quinn I'm doing well good to see you here good to see you it's nice for us to be in the 90 it is yeah a little change of scenery you know it's nice to be out here Ben and I are going to enjoy a delicious dinner afterwards then you know I don't know about you when I go to a place I find this one thing I love here is a salmon salad oh my goodness I haven't had it in a while so I end up getting that but I don't know like when you go to certain restaurants do you get the same thing or yeah so like as I was just telling you I was at the Double Eagle recently and I love their chicken Capri sandwich it's it's it's nice light Chicken you know lots of you know sweet peppers red peppers and you know nice cheese and I mean it's it's delicious I remember the very first time I had it I wanted to almost order a second one um but uh here especially here at the racetrack I love the lobster mac and cheese that you can get and you get it a small portion or a large portion don't lie on their portion sizes here they don't in fact it's funny I I love that but because of the sleeve surgery I've had to lose weight I can't eat mac and cheese but yeah it's it's Hardy it's good it's h and so um and I always like trying you know I always like when I go places I especially like trying uh what's on the special list and one of those uh my best favorite restaurant to do that is El guac um on High Street their their menu regular menu is a fantastic but their specials is sometimes far better and so like I'm set and I'm I always get the fajitas when I go there but I wait to see what the specials are read by your waitress and uh sometimes it's a a fly call and I go nope I'm having a what's a the third one that you read out of the seven to me they are so nice in fact I am not a spicy I I like pepper I don't I'm very Bland eater so when I win they know that and they make up it ever it's delicious they just do a super job they really do yeah in fact where was I the other day some place oh I know it's at the Queen restaurant in v and uh lady and her husband were close by to me she ordered her meal she said no onion no pepper this I said you're like me you're but I'll tell you what's delicious too while we're talking about food is the Mars Ripper Diner oh Yesa is and I went there the other night one of the things I love there is I'm mostly fishy I will eat chicken occas I don't eat R me but they have this uh salmon and it's got tomatoes on well onion I do eat with that but it is really good and but what's amazing there and you've probably been there too the portion I can only eat half correct the other half and I excited correct correct you know any any of their their true Entre and even you know like their Seafood their regular chicken dinners but um you know you can get uh dark meat you know beef and such like that they're they're absolutely ginormous and it's great value for the money that you spend is yeah this was like $21.99 the dish honestly F was this big I ate half the other half home and uh you get salad you get the entree vegetables and deser for $21.99 on that deal but then they had another one I went to oh my gosh uh very rarely have I had this but every once in a while I like chicken croats and they had that and croat honestly folks the one cat was this big same and the plate was filled with mashed potatoes just filled with mashed potatoes so obviously I got three meals out of that yeah I bet I bet and uh of course here the chef here doesn't f my gosh I've had Rick C come on just read pleas Rick cot with me one time doing the interview he's vegan yep and Antonio made up a vegan meal for and he said this is one of the best vegan I've ever had he just did it you like that yeah I fact I go there to see diamond and U I get a power bar so most of my meals are a protein bar a powdered bar like he has a regular meal so so I can stay as Slim as you I got to tell you a funny story too the other day what talking to but talking about the renx oh I think he said Jim have you ever met a bad romic I said no I haven't I said I love it all when I think about it like gosh you know Jimmy well Jimmy and John yep my yeah my dad and my uncle the twins I know them as well as I did Rich and Gary and uh and Eddie correct I guess they're old yeah they're old yeah so my my dad is the second last to youngest because then there's Jan's the youngest that's yes because it goes It goes Rich Eddie Gary Johnny Jim Jane okay there's three Jays there Johnny Jim Jane Y and I see you've got your philly shirt it's nice I know it's a it's a right getting towards that time you know bad loss yesterday last night I mean too many strikeouts but uh you know Aaron Nola standard Aaron NOA pitch seven Innings nine strikeouts one home run nobody on base one walk um and uh you know they got Taiwan Walker on the mountain tonight which I have no not not much confidence in but we need we need one win to get into into the postseason so there's like a 99.9% chance that we're going to make the playoffs but uh four games for the division and I think seven games uh for the top seed so yeah um it's going to be you know you four four games against the Mets I believe yes um that's right so they're up there so I mean it's it's it's going to be sweet you know once we get that one win against the Mets yeah that's true you're right at least you know hope hopefully it's you know worse comes worse we split them um but you know maybe at counting today out and say we'll go three and one against them yeah because I think uh Sanchez and then starts to back the rotation again right but it's exciting it's h it's red October know wheeler looks F he is he is mowing him down hey how about our milville guy got up for Buddy Kennedy yeah he well he got got that great RBI and one of those couple games ago um I I you hear the buzz and you know I said this factiously but you hear the buzz when Kennedy is gets called up and then gets on you know on the active roster and then he gets a hit just the the people it's like you know you walk into any Wawa in in around the city and it's just like hey do you hear buddy Kennedy he got up to bat he hit the ball we was amazing too Ben was when he got up they everybody started chanting buddy buddy yeah what a great kid one of the neatest interviews other than doing them with you one of the neatest interviews I ever had was this is years ago buddy and his grandpa Don and yeah it's probably been when buddy first got drafted to miners but what nice kid and in fact his mom Shannon they interviewed her you know and and Grandpa uh you know in the the bleachers or in seats and uh Shannon's mom was saying yeah she said it used to be years ago she was Don money's daughter and now she's buddy Kennedy's mom see what change yeah and this was cute too uh speaking of Buddy Kennedy and Don money uh when I leave my seats I catch this elevator down to get out of the stadium and a guy named Tony the elevator operator I usually see and I saw him and of course he knows about me being from milville and that kind of stuff and he said Jim you won't guess who was in my elevator the other day I said buddy Kennedy go yeah but he said he had this older guy with him I had no idea who he was and then finally Don told him who he was and he was oh my God because this guy's my age he said Don I loved you as our third basement for the FES and all that kind of stuff so yeah I it's tough though because Buddy's in a position where you've got an Allstar infield where do you break in other than injury correct you know like aund also went the lingering injury you when they want to give like a day off he'll play a base yeah but uh you know now he's back down because Sosa's back up so they have more more toolage but uh it'll I don't think he'll make the uh postseason roster um I doubt it you know when you have so many good players you know you can only have that limited roster and they really dwindle down but you know hey if they make it the whole way he'll get a ring still oh that's right yeah that'll be fantastic yeah my God it'll be wonderful I just oh this is a neat thing too he's probably a little bit younger than you my ticket agent for the Phillies I've been there 20 years I've had the same seats for 20 years Hall of Fame and the ticket agent this year is Nick Luciano and I said to Nick you're not by any chance related to Duke Luciano or he goes yeah that's my great-grandfather and George is his grandpa and Luciano's junkyard all that kind stuff and I in fact his great-grandfather I was a kid and my house was right where the driveway was to going back to lucias in fact my house my father sold the property to Walmart so my house was sort of like where uh the liquor store is it's this side and that and anyway when I'd be out there hitting balls and doing stuff and I had a garage roof that was really cool with different levers I could throw the rubber ball up against and catch it all anyway Mr Lana would come by and he'd give me a ball give me a bat that type of stuff but what a nice young man he is and he's from violand St Augustin prep and all that kind of stuff so he's happy anyway the playoff tickets just for two tickets for each game was $6,600 so but you don't know how many games you're going to get obviously they could go three an out or four and out five and out whatever but it's like okay you don't and thanks to Bob Connor who's and and this time also I got to thank uh the former mayor Mike vizard for commercial Township they kicked in some money for me to get the tickets see what happens with it but uh have you gone to any play FES yeah well reason so last year I was a season ticket holder this year I'm not so I congratulate you on you should stay your 20 consistent consecutive years I mean it baffles to me that my grandfather did 16 years consec consecutively in this position never as mayor but um still running the city way back when um so yeah I had partial season ticket plan I sat out on the Outfield uh loved it every uh home run ball went either to the section that left of me section to the right of me um but uh I went I got season tickets because two years ago I was at that Reese Hoskins bat slam game and I had bought you know couple hundred ticket for just one um that postseason season game uh against the Diamondbacks or the Braves it was I think Braves and uh and he had that bat slam I didn't know they had bat he he slammed the bat when he hit that three-run Homer um I didn't know that it was nine to one I thought it was still seven to one because the scoreboards right behind me until I got home I mean I I partied like I was in college and it was it was some of the most fun I've had at a Phillies game was that playoff game two years ago that's the whole reason I bought season yeah season ticket P poral yeah y it's uh they're doing really well that's for darn Shore you know but I I worry tonight with the Walker Going that much faith in him I know maybe the bullpen you know he was in the bullpen for a little bit so maybe uh either slowed it down or calm down you know keep his emotions out you know I think it's a lot you know like I play golf and I know golf is a a true mental sport more than anything the ball's not moving you have to hit a motionless object and you can lose it when that object that little white ball doesn't go straight or to the right or to the left where you want it to go so I can only imagine that being a pitcher at any level is you know especially in the major leagues and and and uh contentious times it can it can get to your get to you yeah so maybe you know maybe had some time to clear it out uh I don't have much faith into him tonight but uh no me either unfortunately but we'll see you know I'm supporting the Phillies no matter what me too absolutely I've been Phillies fan all my life and in fact this was interesting too Ben when you talk about right you were too young to go to vet Stadium right I no actually I watched uh I seen the I was at vet Stadium a handful of times and I laid in Centerfield and watch a fireworks show oh that's they let all the fans go out and watch the fireworks that's great the um I guess what I was getting back to is I had season tickets at that stadium and the interesting thing at the vet was the people you know took your tickets ushers and all that kind of stuff the attitude there was the typical Philadelphia attitude yeah what do you want yeah yeah short right to the point exactly right then no please thank you yeah no absolutely and then when we switched over to Citizens Bank Park they were phenomenal and and uh at day Montgomery I became friendly with him and he said Jim we sent him off to the Disney School of you know personal and they did and to Dave God bless Dave they just honored him on the wall fct and uh I had situation when I was putting together Mike Trout night for the Phillies for milville you know the city and I dealt with with they and other people they were very helpful for us we had the entire 400 level from third base to first base had 5,000 tickets that we purchased and to the Phillies credit they gave us back $8 in ticket we had $40,000 for the city wow or RCA different programs like that but it was fabulous but my best bet was he took me my my two sons and my attorney Phil Van em we all got to go to the Eagles game in the Philly site and I got to sit with Philly players and oh my God that may have been the last game I've gone to have you gone to Eagles game yeah I've been to two only two um expensive uh well the romic family used to have season tickets oh wow and they you know 50 yard line in the vet and then they transfer transferred over to when the like a Financial Field was built but because there's such an age gap between my next oldest cousin which would be garyan Cindy's youngest child Julie um that it was and that's you know Steve died in 2009 so you talk about those years it wasn't the greatest years of Eagles football So eventually got uh became a challenge to sell the tickets keep the tickets and uh uh on you know looking back at it unfortunately we uh we released them but uh darn if we didn't have them right now or even five years ago uh because uh it's been a it's been a ride for the they stunk the other night yeah and and and Good Old Philadelphia you know I'm big into sports media uh especially 94.1 too that's the only radio station I list yeah if you hear Ben from milville that'd be oh okay that's cool that's great so I listen all the time and uh yeah you know this the sky's falling right now because you know they lost a game and they they lost a game and how they lost the game that's what's sad that's what that's what the issue is but you know short week and then they're going to play the hottest team the NFL Saints down there so travel day and you know but uh and you know two new coordinators you know serani so I think I think they're going to work it out you know we have it you know what always goes back to is there's so much talent on that team if it can if it can driive and can jail together U they'll be something well Barkley looks great as the running back now he's very except the drop you had drop the pass and cl the game I was so upset I had a four like parlay and one was for him to score a touchdown and and for the to have the spread which was five and a half so six points and Eagles winning and yep he dropped that ball and I was like oh there there goes the parlay my God that's a shame yeah but you know I I still love the Philly teams I mean I like some of my friends they well Bobby bar do you know Bobby he's a big Kansas City fan now of course yeah I mean uh that's another interesting thing when you think about it with um Kansas City with uh the VIN kid broke his leg Yeah so he'll be out 68 weeks at least that's a shame cuz he was doing really well with him but yeah the I mean there's nothing better than any sport um in Philadelphia and having playoff you know playoff hockey playoff hockey is you know immensely better than regular season hockey especially in Philadelphia true Red October we just we can't wait yeah and then the Phil you know and then Sixers are the you know they they a heartache waiting to happen yeah but uh uh you know Eagles you know we never know cuz it's we're only on the third week so lot of football left to be play yeah for sure boy I hope they get their act together we're able to come back cuz I think of all well they only play once a week but I really enjoy getting together with my son I go up to his house and we watch The Eagles I had Eagle tickets and they were in like where I am now is the Hall of Fame baseball this was the equivalent to the Hall of Fame it was called the club box area okay and I was sitting almost maybe like five or six rows in front of ml ree so good location and all that but four tickets and this has been sh at least 10 years ago four tickets were uh let's see was it ended up $1,400 for four tickets so it was 350 a ticket and so for 1,400 bucks she got the four tickets and uh it's like what really stun was you had to PID ,400 for the pre-season games that nobody wanted to go to so it got a little expensive eight eight or nine home games a year yeah right yeah exactly that's what really burned a lot of season ticket holders this year because they're first game of the season Brazil yeah your 10hour flight away 3,000 miles or whatever it is I'll tell you do You Know Rich fanor I know the name okay he does football for us and he travels away to all the eag away he didn't go to this one but he goes all the other ones just like Phillies you know Eagles fans they say travel well yes yeah that's true they really do especially in baseball when you know it gets colder out baseball you he's a warmer team or it's vice versa you know we get those uh dog days of summer um and the Phillies definitely experienced that this season they were yeah they were they were losing a little bit that's when I was uh not nvs at all my friends that had to go to their games because they have season tickets well you know it's interesting I've had friends go with me and they didn't know where the seats were and Jim oh my God it's going to be so hot I said well here's the benefit of being in the Hall of Fame correct you got you got the air conditioning and the tables and chairs and you can sit and eat you can watch TV and then luckily my seats are undercover so I don't have the sun beating down on me I don't have the rain it's uh you underneath the cover and I like on the first base side I'm directly even with first base I can see the scoreboard from where I had been and uh yeah I had four at one point but then just had to cut it back to you know afford it but again Bob Conor has been great he splits them with it cuz you know 81 tickets a lot of tickets yeah a lot but I know from having just a partial season ticket package I know how much they love you when you buy all 81 games compared to you know I bought like I had the 17 game or 18 game package brought a couple of games here and there uh last year I think so I went to I had like 22 total games in the regular season um obviously didn't go to all of them get tough with work and especially this job but uh uh you know it was always it was is enjoyable to go well we got to get a milville night and get buddy up there so you could throw out the first pitch I'll tell you to to leisa's crit she did a good job throwing out the first pitch she told me she was practicing with her dad I practiced before throwing out our first pitches here in Justin mil like little league and oh speaking of H that type of thing New Jersey [Music] welcome back to uh inside track I'm Jim quinal with mayor Ben romic and during the commercial break the mayor and I were talking about a little bit of problem we had with the noville football game after the game this past Friday night the football team is fabulous but you know I want to tell you Ben this happened when I was the mayor and this has been 20 years ago at least I guess uh a young man was killed and went right in his house shot him and uh one of the ministers asked me if I would come to the candlelight vigil in The Young Person's honor and it was on mberry Street between 4th and Fifth and so we stood up on the porch and I expressed my condolences the young man's mom and sister and then I spoke and this is what I said I said and this the way I do feel folks I don't think I illegal anyone possessing an illegal gun should do three to five years in prison you shouldn't have them so I said this to about 50 people standing out the street I come off the porch and Junior dufield as a cop comes over to me he said hey mayor half those people you just said that to are packing right now I said oh my God it gave it still give me cold Goosebumps and was interesting then I went to the high school speaking one of the history classes and I reiterated that same thing and a big kid who lived in the neighborhood big guy raised his hand I said yes he said Mary you live where I live you'd want to have a gun I thought is that not sad see I'm I'm I'm not an NRA person I know to be a dedicated Republican you got to be an NRA person you ain't going to get elected well luckily I'm not running for anything but truthfully I mean I don't mind people have shotguns go out and do their shoot their hunting and stuff like that we have a road in milville called Buck shum yes exactly yeah we do right over here but it's like do we really all need to have a gun and then what really gets me and frustrates me is they can't get the Congress to ban the assault weapons I mean you see the mass shooting folks do me a favor go to your Google or you know Facebook or go on line and Google how many mass Mur how many murders there are in England Ireland France Italy Spain you can count them on your hands in fact this is an interesting story um in Disney World 25 years ago I guess it was and I'm standing in line with my kids waiting to go get on a ride and these lady's in front of me and she's from Great Britain and she's talking with me she said can you explain something to me I said what's that man she said my two sons are 18 and 20 but they can't have a beer but she said where we're staying at the hotel across the away is a gun shop but you can go buy guns I said welcome to America yeah I said that's absolutely right and you know I know there's a lot of friends that disagree with me but I you know when we started this country you didn't have police departments you didn't have Sheriff's departments you didn't have protection that you have now and it's just I don't know I just have a difficult time with that and you know I I'm glad I'm not running for office because every NRA member would say that Quinn's no good and you know I understand certain things yes but do you really need what well the mass shootings that the ones that have tried to assassinate uh former president Trump I mean it's just crazy and that's what's scary when you think about it that there's not more assassination attempts on elected officials based upon the availability of the guns yeah but I don't know not going to change it that's for sure like it's a very uh controversial topic it's a Second Amendment for the reason yeah um it's you know it does you know we can I can lengthen this conversation about the history and the how and why and how's its place is but you know that's a uh it'll unfortunately get political and I think we have other things to talk about yes we do that's right that's not a good one no if you want to create a headline I'm I'm all for having having a good strong debate but uh uh oh you know something do want to complain about to you and I haven't I I know Jeff Hoffman I like Jeff Hoffman but I've never been able to get Jeff Hoffman to come on the show uh in fact gosh his mom worked for me his dad and I used to eat together at Jim's lunch and all that and you know he's a really good guy but I don't know what it is but anyway here's my point that happened and I and Jody far Bella I'm not happy with him on this I wouldn't say it's Jeff it might happen more under Jody when I first got elected mayor in 1997 we had 19 special ones W okay 19 very inexpensive you know they of course now let me say this they didn't carry guns but they did have you know the uniforms and the night sticks and all that and it was wonderful because they could be on High Street when events come they go they would be at the library couple of would be assigned there and all that stuff well then as time went by uh it kept shrinking and shrinking and shrinking now I don't know if I maybe my last year or two in city government we were down to like maybe four and then they got to two Lance kler and the guy that's your U Animal control officer Anthony sis SS yeah that's it two that maybe I'm wrong maybe there's another one or two but it didn't make sense to me and I have a lawyer friend who's uh in Wildwood came up to mil went to the guacamole loved his meal went down to leway had wonderful show and then he said Jim I leave and I'm accosted by two guys he and his wife that are Banh handling and he said you know and I said that's where you need the visibility of the special ones I wouldn't send the special ones in the third and fourth street because they don't have a gun but that's another factor that could have been done and I think Jody did do this Joe pepone he good friend of mine was public safety director and Joe has a house in Wildwood and he rented one of the rooms to a special two police officer right which they can carry guns so this guy did come and work for the city for I don't know he was a teacher but he would come when he could come down and my point was like great around Labor Day if I were the public safety director or the chief or somebody i' get down the Cil or city Wildwood the places where they use them in the summer they don't use them the rest of the time to try to improve the numbers of people you visibility is important and when you hear about shooting shooting shooting you'd like to have more visibility I don't know if going to stop it for sure but you know that's something that I was very disappointed that we went from 19 specials down to two or whatever and and they weren't expensive it wasn't like they they were very inexpensive I think the vast number of you know special officers I think the police department look at well if we can cut that number down and then create a full-time officer then that full-time officer would just be better to the department than having guy a class one or class two that doesn't have the full capabilities and authority of a full-time police officer so that that's what I can expect or presume that's why the number diminished I mean but budgetary Cuts we're in it right now um the police department you know without a contract for over eight months whatever nine months uh so you know it's a it's a vital position in the city of M and we don't want to become the city of Atlantic City and have State control over a ride yeah yeah and boy you know another thing too that nowadays and I don't blame them a lot of fellas and girls too I guess that I've known that wanted to get into law enforcement they don't want to do it anymore and I don't blame them I mean that's a scary profession to be in now last last couple years I mean you can see the the turmoil and you know you can't it's not you know I don't want to hearken back to the the good old days but you know there's a certain line that that unfortunately is maybe too too opaque or not clear enough of what a police officer can and cannot do um just like these illegal uh uh dirt bike riders you know that I had a phone call before I got here like like and I was like the other the person on the other line I was like you know it's it's not mville it's the state of New Jersey W because it's an automatic lawsuit if an offic one of my officers goes and chases they're not allowed to chase you follow yeah they cannot Chase yeah wow I got a funny story on a chase I if I ever told you this one when I was the mayor Ray Morales said to me why don't you do some ride alongs I said yeah okay and anyway Junior dufield and I I really liked him a lot and he had a great sense of humor so I was doing a ride along with him one Saturday evening and uh actually on the meal break I took him over to lad's we had something to eat and then we come out I went to the restroom and I come out and he goes hurry up there hurry up we we got to go we got to go so I run get in the car with him and end we ended up behind a fell at 10th in Maine who was he had been looked at and he was drunk anyway but he almost ran over one of our police officers in a bike one of our bike officers so that's what caused the precipitation of the CH of the Chase and at 10th and Broad Junior pulled up behind him and of course he took off and we took off and it was 45-minute Chase I always thought the next jurisdiction would take over the chase you start it you finish it so that was a scary time know he'll let them know yeah right and they did to their credit like thank God we went out 49 marser a Township uh Upper Township then down to Middle Township lower Township and it was unbel but everywhere there they were very helpful they had police officers at intersections wh the traffic lights were and that type of stuff so they were very helpful to us and finally uh he went down the Dead End Road and Junior was able to arrest him it was a violent guy and he said to Junior you noville cops you ain't nothing you can't catch up with me in my Honda or whatever what do you do run them off the road you can't do that but I I give Junior a lot of credit and Eddie sroga was there as the backup but these are things that are scary I mean this is where these people put their lives on the line folks the our police officers and we the time I was there I'll tell you what I really enjoyed and I appreciated the job that milville police officers did we had I guess that time maybe 50 I whatever our numbers were yeah but it was wonderful and uh you know Chief Harvey Chief Herman you know everybody there that uh they did a good job of course I like jod a lot and as I do I like Jeff also but haven't been able to get Jeff on the show maybe you can do a show and bring with you oh speaking of that I want to thank the mayor uh what was that called downtown H City fest the Holly City fest a couple weeks ago I'd ask him if he would help be one of the uh interviewers and all that stuff and then the other person was supposed to come and meet him canceled on me at the last minute and then no BR did GRE a little bit towards because I said to no where oh I'm walking up the street I'm the 100 block I said get up to the 400 block and help the mayor but you did a great job and it was nice I you seeing you interview with yeah I think I think you know Ryan tells me he goes here's uh Brandon and uh here's your cam guy and here's your microphone and a go interview and I was like I have no problem doing that because I think it's best for the city of mville and you know and saying who I am and saying let's talk about your product you're here at you know the Holly City fest you know and that's our second annual cuz last year was our first pretty good CH out yeah we had 77 registered 70 total showed up wow that's Fant and I mean and it's always always beautiful weather and this this was uh just like the car show is absolutely nice yeah they have so we've been lucky but uh you know we had three live bands I think for Hall City fest um super food vendors multiple food vendors um and that's just you know then more recently last weekend was a the car show yeah and that got back into City control so millville's 33rd annual car show we had over 200 registered cars attend uh we had two live bands we had a kid Zone uh I mean we had food vendors as well and credit to uh Rob Bry who owns BR Burgers I did his wedding okay he uh he went to uh one of the food vendors to get a Le lemonade for his whole his staff he's walking back and he got in a golf cart and we shuttled him down back to his place and he goes He I forget who he was talking to either Wayne grman or somebody and he goes uh been on High Street for 10 years in business he because I've never seen it this crowded with cars or this crowded with people in my 10 years and I was like Ah that's good I had lunch at the your house but I gotta go see Rob soon you know the other interesting thing too is um Samantha Cruz Cruz she's amazing and you know I think back to that period of time and folks this is the truth in all the I don't know 40 50 years history of the city of milville I am the only person that did not have the last name of romic or Shannon that ran the uh parks and public property department and I only did that for one year Timmy said get out I'm taking it over I said okay now I you know really went to what I needed to do my first four years that was something I looked forward to and of course I had your Uncle Rich was fabulous Liz Nikki was phenomenal I mean you the people were great and uh but then I realized as the mayor I wanted to be more involved in Economic Development bringing people here type stuff and Tim that was a natural for him but your grandpa for 16 years had it yep and uh then the Shannon and now is that part of your department or what you no I'm public affairs office okay so right now commissioner rello has parks and public property okay tell me a little bit about her item Marissa rello she's wonderful she you know it's tough getting you know when we have we have 30 days so when somebody resigns position you have 30 days to f it if you don't fill it in 30 days then it just remains blank um and left open until election comes in November so uh you know it got close to that 30 days and we appointed Marissa rello um I of course because you know at that point you're seasoned you know I've been doing it for three years a couple months now as mayor but uh uh I remember that very first meeting I was like I wanted her to speak more and I was like but I can remember the very first I was like I didn't say I didn't say any extra words I didn't have to um and uh but she's learning a lot she's doing well um uh I can't wait to see her uh move on and continue to do this job you know I support her in this upcoming election so yeah I was going I I know Bobby mcquade's running again Carol casabon do you know her yes I don't know her she was a secretary at uh well she's a secretary for the Elks and I'm not a member of the Elks organization so every time I see her when she comes to and she's on plan board with me um but she comes to she's regular for the city meetings and every time I see her face I go I need that my little brochure and I need $100 and I need to give it to her I got to become a member of the especially before the sports F yeah that I spack what were you a glass Sports BR yep that was the last table so this next year I'll be I'll be the first one so I got to be a member before then at least that's when Micky Mor was there walked right by him didn't know what he didn't know what he looked like I know what and Dan Baker is a good friend of mine he loved Mickey Mendini to introduce him Mickey morandini has that type thing anyway we're talking with the mayor we're talking about sports talking about the downtown the good things that happened the last few weeks we'll be back more Park and one of the things then the good thing that has happened here at the New Jersey Motorsports Park it was funny somebody told me the other day the reason I lost being mayor was because of the Motorsports Park and I said yeah I realized that because people weren't happy with the noise you and I understand if you live around this type thing but I feel that it was a great thing it's become a real good thing for the city we were getting a lot of flack you're giving them this giving them that but what's really benefited and I think we've talked about this is the exotic car garages are phenomenal ratable with no impact on the city uh no kids going to school or anything like that and they just keep growing these and they're on phase six unbelievable and they're they're doing well they've already done the condos that on that other side of course this building and the Officers Club building they have a lot of ratables here too as well and uh it's a great draw I saw that Joe oh gosh the got it's running against van Drew for congress Joe Sal he's having a thing here Saturday with there's some uh famous race guy I I did read it I forget apparently it's some deal with this guy that comes out here and helps teach people to race or something so he's sponsoring it or he's coming to it or something like that well there'll be a big there'll be a bigger party at uh glass toown Brewing Company on this Saturday so this Saturday yep they have their third annual October Fest oh that's great so so who will be there well I'll be there definitely well that I know uh so they had a so last year they had actual poke Pete and his orchestra play but scheduling yeah half of them are my family um and and that was wonderful but this year they got a uh cheesy and the crackers are playing and Chris LAX I think is opening up Chris La is a very good just solo guitar player yeah I've heard he'll jam and play for a long time my son Ryan played with chees and the crackers yeah they've been a b that's been time yeah like that's great go go gadget you know they were out here uh out where we're sitting right here they were here couple you know a couple months ago um it seems like any any band that's popular now has gone through one of these localish bands that you know they cut their they make their roots and they build their build their ties um but yeah tomorrow not tomorrow cuz today's Thursday um my days you know you know doing this job you're right going together Thursday tomorrow Friday on Saturday yes I all day at glass town is there October so now let me ask you I've been out there it's very nice they um they're still not allowed to serve food correct you know and John berselli who's a good friend of mine a state senator I'm going to have him on in the next couple weeks or so and he's always tried to promote them to be able to do that his thing was he wanted even more liquor licenses to be able to go out and one of the things that Yas kle as the Queen restaurant one night the mayor L was there and he said he wanted to get a liquor license I said the liquor licenses are a quarter of a million bucks at least maybe yeah so I said you don't you can't afford to do that but I did say to him and I don't know who whether Bell was involved in this at one time I said what you want to do do is go to Cedar Rose Winery tie him with them you'll have the bottles of wine and that's what he did and that I don't even think there's any charge except buying the bottles for them and they're allowed so many people that they also take care of the hotel Charlesworth You' probably been down there I've been down there once I don't know I'd like you got to go when the Republicans are having the fundraisers yeah when they're yeah when they're nice and cheap um that's true yeah yeah you're right at half your salary that just you I got many so many you know so many business things to do and like next Wednesday I think is the Chairman's Gala for Senator Testa and the that's at it's at the green view okay um but you know cool $250 um and then you got of course you know make sure you're pressed and dry clean and this and that yeah but uh um is it next week no it's two weeks it's on Wednesday uh so I think two weeks because next week is the well week from today I will be at Miss Holly City 202 will'll be there too I just got asked to be a judge yesterday so oh gosh I've done that and the one year I did it this really nice young lady had been runner up two years in a row and she was runner up by year two and her mother I don't think her mother ever spoke to me I like you don't want to do judging then you should be MC judges one person's happy and the other aren't happy well I got a text and I was like I did The Baby Show last year so I was like might as well graduate Miss City my tenure um so they're like report time is 3:45 and I'm like wow they're like they're starting at 6 I guess for the event right Ryan so we get we get yeah we get Danny's dinner delivered for us and this and that I got to type up a bio or give a bio I have a bio somewhere in City Hall um which is nice but uh it's uh something else to do got to make sure get one of my suits clean dry cleaned and uh I think it's a Barbie theme that's what I was told um so maybe get a nice goodbye pink tie or something like that be nice yeah where do you go get yourve I go this a funny story I go to the place next to uh it's in the Union Lake Crossing shopping center the same place it's the only one only one in town I think well I love Franks and they closed up on yeah so it's like then I heard har like anywhere you go for especially dry cleaning like every you ask if you ask five people one of them says oh I had a horor story here they lost my shirt they lost my socks but I had no issues she's been fine take cash you know get it done a couple days yeah I got fact I've got to go there and pick up a couple pair of slacks yeah and yeah luckily the nice thing about nowadays compared to you know 20 30 years ago is most places are very casual you know you don't have formal suits and that type of stuff as much and but I'll tell you what Mike Tesa is amazing that man is the sharpest dresser you'd ever want to see he did a phenomenal job on the show with me he's very charismatic very personable he promised me next time he's bringing his mom Ellen yeah she's gonna come really I here I'll tell you what that guy is super and and his dad I've always liked Mike Senior very very nice man good golfer as well is he really and but he started but you know I always say this is such a golf is a mental game um he started playing golf like in his 50s wow um and he's a very good golfer so every time I see him um he goes hey how you doing Ben this and that and it's like good sir um and you always quick conversation you know a couple sentences about golf where did you play I played here how' you shoot uh you know yeah 85 or something like that was 105 yeah that's where I would be the I'm trying to think uh yeah he's he is amazing and then I just saw a picture of Mike the senator with trips yep his son and they the reason they call his son trips is he's the third Michael senior Junior and the third but I'll tell you truthfully I wish he could run for president I vote for Mike Tesa for president he's always a as he you know being in the Republican party you know you see him go to events uh he's uh when he traveled down to the GOP convention condo was saying Joe condo was saying how well he's known throughout not just the Northeast but throughout you know better part of the Mississippi side of state senators State congressmen and such like that and and it's interesting because he got to read the the endorsement for Trump you know and all that watch that on national TV I think we played that too and Joe condo and I become friends we've talked about that too it's like w he's he's doing well he's a he's a great great person to be around great person to get thoughts of and you know bounce ideas off or say you know hey how how would this is the situation how can you do this and like and that in the just in the political world not just him but asking other people that you know especially at my age there's not not many people in the political world that I can be like hey who's another you know uh under 30 mayor that s with the situation that I that I can ask you might be the only one in the state of New Jersey but uh I was this was cute I was thinking about the people that have been Mayors over the period of time of my lifetime anyway and it's neat because there was another Ben that was the mayor you know that was right locally yeah locally there's a park named after oh uh oh the one out there yeah yeah um Corson yep Ben Corson very nice man but you know what's interesting Ben um in the noville form of government as a commissioner there was never ever anybody who repeated to be the mayor except for me and I actually did it three times Mike Santiago did it two times and and the problem I is like I love Chad Goodwin he was my buddy he was wonderful man he was the mayor I was proud of him so what happens is you go in and you get five votes so number one check good one and I don't know where I went two three four got the number five and I thought oh this is a nice guy he he know but he's not the person I think would be the mayor he got the most votes went right up to be the mayor and bypass chat it's like you that's what stuff you know and you know I heard that all the time cuz when I finish 10 votes behind Lisa so many people are like I know I shouldn't cuz and you it's I didn't realize that at that point but because there's five open seats yeah you know your vote gets essentially split yeah um sure because even though so like say if you just voted for me and Lisa we're you know there that's an equal tie of the way you look v um but uh you know I I look forward I'm two and0 in elections so I got faith in it man I'm looking forward to next year yeah I've gained so much knowledge I've learned so much in this position not just being mayor but as you know I'm still a city milville City Commissioner sure just a title yeah the way the milville government is you're a commissioner but you're you're the mayor the mayor runs the meetings and stuff that goes on I tried years ago nobody want to do it I thought we should go to mayor council bried him but yep that's a tough that's a public discussion that couldn't even and and I understand I couldn't even get my fellow Commissioners to support it because a commissioner has more power than a council person so I yeah because it it delineates and you know whether you're strong mayor weak counsel or weak mayor strong counsel um because then at that point the mayor no matter what the mayor still has overriding power but uh the count then if it's a strong Council then the council president will have close but not the same power I mean it's just we're unique I think the I think that ship is coming you know that that that that transitional period is coming I don't know when well you're young enough you'll be around to see it yeah you know but yeah I really I mean I don't think there are more than five or six commission form of governments left in the state C was they went to Mayor counsil I mean just everywhere you turn around and uh I don't know yeah we've been we we well you know this just mble history we've been at uh Walsh act former government for over 100 years I think it was 1917 or 19 something something you know early on in 1900s so yeah maybe it's runit course but that's a that's a you want to Bo that's a public question that can you can get boggled for you know I just in my mind trying to think of who was the mayor when I was you know in noville yeah and I think Ben Corson was the first one I can remember Ru on Wiki Peak was one for a term uh of course then you had Rob got elected for a while and didn't serve the whole time but he was there uh Jimmy parent and uh chck Goodwin i' for about there too van Amden was he may yeah he he was commissioner yeah van Amon yeah or uh Van Hook Arthur yes thank you Van Hook he and Rob split that period of time yes he was thank you yeah that was another one I forgot that was Emil Van Hook and uh so and then I I won in 1997 and uh then 2001 2005 and in 2009 mik Santiago beat me by about 50 votes or whatever and um and again that's the year I think as somebody just said to me the other day that's when I was doomed because of the Motorsports Park and the noise yeah I guess so that happens but um Mike did get two terms but it was interesting that he ran as a group and he had sort of like I was dumb enough to do the last time I ran I'd never run as a group I was always just me the last time I finished fourth I was praying I'd finish six because I didn't want to be with one of the people that finished above I heard I watched your last with a yeah with assemblyman mlen I saw that yeah so it was like time for me to go back to the county you know and I'll tell you what other than that person all of the people I've served with were really good people and that person is not a good person in my opinion and you know it's one of those things that happens but you know what's neat Ben is not running for office not wanting to run for office people rip me on Facebook oh by the way I brought I brought Section 8 housing to milville oh Loney you know but you're blame it on me I don't care something else they said I foret I just laughed out but you know what I mean God bless Lisa the thing that I'm not sure it was tough you don't seem to get this very much on Facebook but they were ripping her you know what I mean and it's like that that's tough because first of all they can say whatever the hell they want it's not true but they can say it and people oh yeah must be true it's on Facebook yeah no folks that's fact somebody was telling me I forget oh Larry W was telling me that people make up fake Facebook pages for the so you don't know who they are but they're one of those yeah one of those negative people that come to the city commission meetings complain complain complain you know it's like it's a shame it's like I it's uh yeah I don't I can't see it I don't want to see it I can see it if I really want to see it but like it just it it just the little things and I get it at there and I they all have a voice that needs to be heard and you know if you want to put quotations around you can but uh I so when I say I get it I understand but like the little things like somebody was like who's flying a drone in milville this that the other thing it's like solar companies use drones all the time City doesn't have a drone like who cares um and then the rumor mill starts happening and it's like ah yeah but like people tell me they're like good you know before Tuesday meeting I got text message good luck tonight I'm like thanks like is it something specific something do you still get the people that are complaining at the meetings so I I don't want I I truthfully I go pay my taxes at the drive-thru and that's my extent of what I do with milville because of that one person in particular but uh you know do you get that we have you know there's a group of people you know um I talk to them I'm personable but you know cordial you know I just got you know I was like I and you always say we I truly do appreciate because we could look at something from an angle and that we're just totally missing and you know when they say you know somebody will come up to the podium be like I don't like this I think this should happen it doesn't happen all the time but every now and again it's like that yeah okay let's go back to the drawing board let's let's see how what we can do and how we can do it yeah there are some points most of it's if they're you know straight up ripping you and they're like if you know nobody it's once in a blue moon then you probably know this as well that somebody comes up there and says thank you yeah they're not there to thank you for your time they're like hi what's your what's your name and address I'll send you flowers from Colonial um um speaking about flowers a colonial donated for our top uh top tier winners for the car show uh bouquet of flowers that's so like best and show got bouquet hour great overall best car they do a great job I was like God so appreciative you know that that's great uh for the community to show up when we have these big events in downtown
