world around them thank you so much all right we love when we have all kinds of kids here to share stuff with us so we're going to turn it over to Mr bushy for our Lauren highlight where do I go I don't know wherever you want it's your show right now like am I in the right spot here she looks great perfect thank you uh I'm not going to be here long I uh going to work with Mr Weber to get a PowerPoint present presentation set up and introduce our fabulous 7th grade engineering teacher Janice Lewis and some amazing Bulldogs who are here to talk about a project they did in their seventh grade engineering class just had a very exciting com experience which you'll hear about and Dr du are going to see firsthand so please welcome Janice Lewis thank you hi everybody welcome so I'm excited to have these fine folks with us tonight um I teach seventh grade engineering at Lawrence it is a trimester class so every student rotates through the course over the course of the year um so I have met every seventh grader now for 13 years um and we've been doing the car project I think we figured out this might be year 10 um so it runs three times a year and um the students are going to tell you a bit about what they've designed um I what I love most about this project is it lets students dive into some of the technical pieces of it but also Al get some creative pieces going um so it manages I think to often capture a really wide range of students um but I'd love for them to tell you more about it so they're G to come forward over this way okay so some some of the students are going to tell you about some of the gold of the car just say your name as you go up there Bulldogs um hi I'm javana and um I'm going to tell you guys about the transportation systems or the address St standards so this project helped us learn about engineering design and transportation systems and for engineering design we had to build test and improve a prototype so that we could get it the way that we wanted and design it how we would like so we can use our imagination to make it in a way that would pleas us and possibly others around us and for the transportation systems we learned how to improve subsystems to make an entire system work better so that way maybe our cars could drive safe safely and straight and stuff like that awesome thank you so [Applause] much I'm bstone uh I'm going to talk about the principles of steam so we used science for the first couple classes uh researching the aerodynamics and like drag for their cars technology um there wasn't as much I mean power with a doublea battery and a couple wires going to a motor there was much technology uh it was the engineering that really I mean this class is called engineering this car this car was actually like was broken in half on its way to the race so they had to fix it um uh the engineering it was we had to improve on the original cars um and you had to build it test it and then improve again and again um so it it took us a lot was one of their improvements um I my cars over there I made a completely different car than most people it was used RC car body uh but I had to make completely different chassis for so um the Arts factor that was a big one because you know you're decorating it there are some over there that want style prizes um and math You' had your original car was I think 10 and a half inches long and 5 Ines wide and you had to improve on that so just change it so it had to be different length with three thickness was broken on the way to the race was that on I mean did you expect that and you had this is his car just fell off the cart on its way hi my name is Justin Parker and me and my friend te over there go it's the Magic School Bus and I'm talking about teamwork and problem solving and there was actually a lot of problems with this because it's big and we had to redesign it so if there was a problem I'd get the tools and Keen would build it and it was actually heavy and it went really slow so we had to fix that by putting in like new batteries and new wires and it went faster but there was so much stuff in here to make it go slow and there's an opening and the can usually fell out but we had to super glue that so it could go close there was actually a fin on the top but it broke off I don't know where it went so the teamwork was this this kid named Remy in our class he couldn't make it today and he actually gave us the idea to build the Magic School Bus and he likes baby sharks so we put a shark pin on the top and we built this thing I think it had a lot of weight to it so that's what made it go slower but we added some details by coloring it yellow putting this Frizzle on the side and yeah that's about it wa the can oh yeah so we have to put it in the can for the races like it's a human body in it so and if it fell out you'd be disqualified to actually be able to transome thank you and I be talking about um the tools and how we were supposed to use them so we used Dremel to like Dremel down the sides to make them smooth and to modify the body of the car and um we um also like had to adjust the C how did you get it so curvy oh this isn't my card this is some it's got a good look I like it did you bring your car as well no thank you so much so um it was important for students to um engage and um I think we all had a really fun time with it like um you see like this person it's not mine I can't take credit for this masterpiece uh like this person must have like really had to like um the team really had to like engage and like work together and yeah hello my name is Paul this is the car thaten have that's what these popsicle sticks are for oh that was part of the redesign yeah actually was a blessing disg before to knock straight now so it has to go uh 20 feet uh using the doublea battery which was wasn't a problem this year but if you make your car is too heavy which has happened in the past it won't go or if there's something rubbing against the wheels it won't go um we used to do solar power but there's not much sun at the moment so that was an option uh has to fit inside a two foot long long one foot wide and one foot high box uh but that wasn't a problem this year I to carry this an empty soda can like he mentioned and if it falls out you're disqualified friend of mine Elliott he uh get some very close calls with his but his was really fast that made that those two were related yeah has to be recyle recycled or found materials so I used craft foam and the original dolsa wood of course the popsicle sticks yeah okay um so um the the day of the car was really fun as well um what you want me to play the video oh yeah yeah are they really moving that fast for the first and second uh places wow yeah some of them went really fast this one is a style car so it goes like slower because there's a bunch of stuff on it but there are um like yeah PA was really fast he made an epic comeback in my opinion uh um it was it was really fun my favorite part was cleaning up because I was clean period I was in the last setting up period so I was um putting down the B so the cars wouldn't go off the track yeah um they didn't really go in like straight lines but but like the um what were they called um the things that you were just saying set up bumpers yeah um but there were bumpers so um they have they weren't all perfect but as long as they made like the foot thing it worked and it was really fun sharing people on and stuff um uh mine was really slow um but uh but that but that was okay because like some people make could have made style cars and it could have like like there was one story about a car that style car but it was really fast so it became speed car and um so that was really cool were there any collisions um yes there were anys um no but um there's been some close mon I think B's a little close like um because I was going to get I don't remember but um it was it was a really fun day though we got to like send the bleachers and cheer on our friends as they like went against each other and it it was pretty Qui for the racing time unless you know you to ra the car but um for the most part it was pretty fun how you all seen each others ahead of time or were there any periodand right yes but you might have been surprised by the big truck I'm gonna scroll through some pictures of the uh other cars like the whole catalog of cars if there's other questions then other Bulldogs can come up the first ever driving bathtub theat that's the Inside Out wagon wow when fastest one goes by can you point out what the fastest design you guys might see it before me a lot of [Music] Spider-Man little one that almost Spiderman and Hello Kitty they made a compromise I like it [Music] Starbucks that was a winner style the middle one yeah uh these are mostly um Bott bottom right oh wow bottom left [Music] it like thank you guys so much thank you guys thank you for bringing them for all of the family who who brought them here so they can share with us we really appreciate it it's so great to see Kids In Action okay um next up on our agenda we have a ation acting on the Career Technical education and missions process and we got this information over the weekend as well okay thanks you're welcome um so CP department head has been U really paying attention to what desie is asking and changes of the application process and so we um took our application that we had for our two chapter 74 programs um The Early Education and Care which is our high school preschool and um design and Visual Communications as well as looking at our Perkins Pathways and updated it both to align to the current practice at the high school but also to make sure there are no selective criteria in it because that is what the department of development and secondary education is asking us to take out use a lottery system but not wait the application on any other factors should there be more students so that's uh really the overarching impetus for the change um I'm happy to answer questions but just really the bottom line is aligning it to our practice and it is U this procedure does require your endorsement um in order to send that on to Desi and actually recognize it as revised but the only real difference is the U the eligibility do we have that problem or we have more kids want than we have spot through our course selection process and the open enrollment for students to take multiple courses there are sometimes um where we might have more students register but in the end they they've elected to take other opportunities it all sort of works itself out oh I'm make the motion please do go for okay so I make the motion to approve the new um enrollment after appliation for the career technal career technical education so a second a second thanks Melissa uh any other discussion about this process Mike you got anything you good I apologize for not being there no I almost unmuted that's the wrong thing no worries um you want to start us off with a roll call vote though Heen yes thank you uh Glenda yes nean yes Augusta yesus yes yes yes well also yes that's unanimous thanks next up is a discussion of the budget for fiscal year 26 Paul this is just going to be a quick update let me give it through essentially the budget process overall I love and then I'll give you an overview of some of the challenges for next year so when we start the budget process we start with uh Dr D I start with conversations with each of the uh School principles would review uh the enrollment at the individual schools the staff levels at each individual schools um any change in grade needs Etc um and then and that's sort of the first step um looking to see if there's any potential retirements and so on in that of Staffing levels likewise it's another conversation that happens between myself and the principles for all of their non-salary expenses so essentially a line by line uh discussion that happens and then if there's any incremental pressure that they have if there's a suppli item that may be uh you know going up like Lumber cost for example clay cost those type of things that would um add uh pressure to what they uh their budget lines might be uh for items we essentially take the student population we a given budget this year is roughly 600,000 uh so each school was Al allocated out of that amount uh based on their student population and then we also look at um you know at the administrative level big items like maintenance fuel cost and so on so the uh the handout that I just passed around are some of the key factors that are non-salary related uh budget pressures and some of the mitigant to those budget pressures for next year um we are in discussions with the town but it's very early stage we have not settled on a budget increase for the school system at this at this point uh so we're still working with that but um they hand out that if you again these are non-salary items um the busing line you see there is uh $370,000 increase in uh busing costs uh that would be both the cost of uh uh you know what we expect when we go to bid with our third party provider lucini or whomever else may B on the contract uh we expect to have a new contract in late January um part of that is also the fleet that we ride so we lease uh 14 fs and uh windy buses for special education and uh those lease payments roughly 261,000 that we need to put on to the budget um and so in this line the mitigation um we would bring that from 370 to 205 and essentially what we're looking in discussions with the town is that we would buy out uh about half of those fanss and buses that total Capital cost would probably be around $750,000 we put it on the April warrant if that would we were successful in that effort that would reduce that 261,000 lease payment that I just referred to uh down by 165,000 so that's one medicant to that uh the second line is out of District tuition uh has increased uh we need to rebuild this budget line uh and um one of the ways of doing this is uh to draw down the remaining portion of the stabilization fund as you may recall we drew down 825,000 the fund was was 1.1 million uh so we have some room to draw down the remaining piece in April simultaneously however we'll need to replenish stabilization fund so we' have to create a new stabilization fund for the future again these are options that we're currently looking at uh the third non salary budget pressure is on out of District transportation we were 160 2,000 over on that budget line last year again we were within the budget in total I'm just saying certain categories now have to be adjusted up for you know for these increases on a District transportation transportations of students who uh going to private schools special needs number line special ed cont contracted services this is some of the therapeutic behavioral costs uh for out of District uh uh students um school supplies upwards of 55,000 uh and utilities uh in with utilities are we just with the town signed a two-year contract uh for gas um that will fix our gas prices over the next two years and that's at a rough roughly a 14% increase so let me just talk briefly on those categories the transportations special ed contracted Services uh and supplies those increases we won't be able to mitigate the real fact is that we're going to have to uh build within the budget on the Utility side we've begun a program uh thanks with the help of Stephanie mson we we're able to now monitor the utility usage of each of our buildings and we can you know judge with square footage usage of both electricity and gas and what our attempts to do is to shorten the period the occupied time where a building is heated up and then remains heated throughout the day obviously as students uh are attending school at the building and then the heat is turned down once that uh the students leave we're going to try to shorten this period so we're not unnecessarily heating uh the buildings early in the morning so rather than starting at 7 we'll start at 8 you know rather than stopping at 6 or at 5 we'll stop at 4: and the buildings take quite a period to cool down so we're going to try to make a real Dent uh in the utility cost of these buildings obviously being much more efficient as well which is a big plus but we now have the tools that we can go in every month and evaluate where we are on any given building and their usage or efficiency of utility so we hope to counter uh this increase in natural gas pricing by just being more efficient in how we operate so all in all PA before you go want just say what those tools were so it's essentially it's a software tool that looks at your energy unit usage at each building both all for all utilities for for electrical usage our natural gas usage Etc and we can see it and compare buildings based on square footage and we can compare it over time and the data is also WEA or Ted so if you're looking at a particular cold weekend you can the the the the software will adjust the usage based on what the outside temperature will be and so you can really compare apples and apples and and and it does it on a square footage basis so the high school can be normalized to an elementary school and how efficient their the building is and then we can go in and see what factors are are uh impacting that building I'll give you a clear example the worst building from an efficiency standpoint is the north felm elementary school and the reason for it is the reason why we're doing the new roof is because it's it's not well insulated so that heat escapes through the roof um and and you know so it's natural gas usage on a square footage B it's still substantially higher than what it would be had it been properly insulated from the start and we can compare that you know that is by far the number one U usage of of any building that we have but whereas if you look at the te ticket where we did just put a new roof on uh that that usage within that building is very efficient and so we could compare and kind of look into where we are at each building and then make adjustments accordingly accordingly obviously without freeing the students you know it's it's more or less you know watching what that occupied time is that we're trying to think of with at this point but also gives us a sense of you know what are the type of projects we need going forward to help reduce this uh utility building and and you know no f is you know due to have that uh construction started in July well so you had a question I do so um I hear that we're looking to be more efficient with our utility bills but I want to make sure that uh the people that are in the building are comfortable so when you say that there'll be an adjustment uh will there'll be input from the staff like let's say for I'm just going to use happing stance so we're gonna starting we're going to um heat um East FM school starting at 7 AM by the time the students and the staff gets there shortly after eight is the building warm enough like we'll the be wiggle room you know as far as it was freezing when I got there I took till 10 o'clock in the morning for the students to feel like they could take their quotes off yes exactly in fact we've talked I've talked to all of exps to make sure that we we did we're getting in immediate feedback on where we are within the building if it's stall back too much you start getting complaints we'll adjust the occupied time so that it's it's pushed further back so the building has time to so I again I love that we're trying to be more efficient but I um just want to make sure the people that are in the building are absolutely is that's a critical part um yes can I ask again just for you to quickly um go over the part about buying the mini minivan buses and um and one of the questions I have is how many that so we we have 14 that we have on lease right combination of fans and uh mini buses it's evenly split between the two and that lease for those 14 Vehicles is 261,000 a year so rather than leasing the V Vehicles we'd go back to the town and ask them for at least $750,000 to buy half of those Vehicles out of the lease you know you know put that on the capital plan versus having the lease uh on the operating Jina um two things I just wanted to Stephanie who helped you do the software Madson Madson yeah it's our sustainability coordin I know I forgot her last name as as you said it um and then um the other one was so for school supplies Rising is that something just for the coming year that's normal you know software prices that go up that the students use in their academics as well as you know it can be as much as lumber supplies art supplies it's a whole collection no okay a lot technology maybe okay thank you I just had a question on when we if um on the April warrant uh it passes who will then manage we manage the fleet currently so we manage our own currently we exactly so the lease whether we lease or operate doesn't whether we lease or own doesn't change our responsibility to the vehicle so the van that we own we have them under a maintenance program that we run uh fth Motorcar for example is our most frequent vendor that we use to have the oil change have the wheels you know rotated uh have any repair work done Etc so we operate those uh vehicles thank maintain I know we interrupted you with question all okay thank you so much we'll have more to come but thank you it's great to get it in digestable amounts so thank you so much for Shar and color Cod um next up is acting on the waterfi valley ski trip SOA was right we had two so um thankfully we have backtack meetings so we can still um we can still vote to approve this one can I make that motion yes please to make a motion to act on the March 9th 2025 Waterville Valley C thank you so much is there any discussion on this one same details as last week right Mike want to start us with a roll call please Halen yes Glenda yes yes AA yes yes ke yes yes wel also yes that's unanimous thanks so much more good field trips okay next is acting on the policies that we had our first read on last week the student um submission to education survey curriculum development and adoption and the homebound education one um we have to take them one at a time so we'll start with i is there a motion to approve I make that motion Melissa in a second Terry's got the second any questions on this one any discussion great uh Mike you're first Heen yes yes yes yes yes keep yes something yes and wel also yes that's unanimous thank you next is IG IG make that motion M has got it again Terry want it again yeah great thanks any questions on the curriculum this was just combining curriculum development and adoption correct any questions on this one great uh Mike Heen yes yes yes AUST yes yes yes yes Welch yes that's unanimous as well thank you and last is homebound education and this was just changing terminology if I remember I'll make that motion you Melissa Terry's got the second any questions on this one great Halen yes yes yes yes yes ke yes dumping yes and well CH a yes so that one's unanimous as well thank you to policy for getting those to us we appreciate it right on time now we caught up we did catch up that that was some Speedy voting okay superintendent update Lor yes yes sorry my voice um so uh murder on the Orin Express is the fall play for our um B High School theater uh company so I just um urge you to get some tickets and go it's a all of them have just been fantastic over the last several years and so um I just think it's great that's that's what I'm share we can pass it around if you want to do the QR code school right at the high school yep we do a fall play and then we do a spring uh musical every year no it's in November this week they do such a great job excellent job and I have to put in a plug because Barnes schol used to rule as far as theatrical but now we're we're giving them a run for thank you Terry I think we are Margaret would second that I'll second it on her behalf she goes to all the shows and then she always plugs them after work yeah um thank you for sharing that uh routine business we have the minutes from October 28th uh make a motion to for the thanks Melissa you're on a roll a second for the minutes I'll second thank you H any edits or Corrections okay roll call Mike Halen yes yes yes August yes yes bumping yes and wel also yes those pass uh committee report reports well yeah VI had a really successful glow night event um they changed the running event to a different format at night because they would often bump into football uh game uh you know the different levels of football so they tried this out and um it was a great success so just my daughter ran in it yeah yeah I got a thumbs up too yeah yeah love it although I wish that they hadn't handed out glow sticks I will say that because it was just a lot of trash by the next morning well yeah any feedback that was yeah um and the other um the Cap Cod collaborative is still negotiating for its new director yeah I mean it's underway but it's just so I'm still not going to say it's done deal yet but it's almost done any other committee reports I guess it's only been a week so uh motion to adjourn make that thank you is there a second thank you yes keep yes and yes we're adjourned thanks so much see you guys meeting
