e e e build any more than that really I'd like to call this meeting to order adequate notice has been given this meeting as required by law notice has been forwarded for publication of District official newspapers Post in the apps Gam Cedar Creek and OAS high schools and forwarded to all the clerks of the municipalities within the school district there are two opportunities to address the members of the board the board values and welcomes comments and opinions from residents as long as remarks are not personal or discourteous the public comment portion of the meeting allows the board to listen to community members and to hear their opinions on school policy and operations the first public portion is reserved for persons wishing to speak about agenda items only the second opportunity following the action items is when residents major the board on any school related issue each speaker is asked to limit their comments to 3 minutes and if you're and you're not permitted to yield your time to another the public comment portion of the meeting during both sessions will not exceed 30 minutes and upon being recognized persons wishing to speak should stand and identify themselves by name and T please stand for the flag salute pled allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all can I ask for a moment of silence edmans present Garrison here Gunther pres Hartman here haa cly here sorio here Wright here how here cap Nelson here dorsy you have a COR need a motion to approve the minutes so move second I have a motion to approve the minutes regular and executive and special for March 18th and 8 any questions comments or Corrections Edmonds yes Garrison abstain on March 18th and April 8th Gunther yes Hartman yes cly yes Torio yes abstain to April 8th special right yes how yes motion is approved okay we have some special presentations tonight I'm going to ask Mr Parker to introduce his uh student of the evening I um I talk a little bit about your commitment as a board to doing everything you can for us to have every Club activity talk about that all the time doesn't hear enough about what young man couple years ago pretty shy I would say right um right now talk about something he did but right now I went involved I'm probably missir comp comp I miss get them all that's all you do and 40 credits he GP 107 so you know you talk about what I think obviously the academic portion of what he does is very important to him when he works that hard and has a GK like that but I think he would agree all what we sure but the reason going the reason Mar Jun is here today is she participated in the American Legion or aoral competition a little bit about that um so um earlier this year um my history teacher Miss Kaine she told us about this opportunity for an oratorical context and what it was basically was that you gave an eight minute prepared speech and then a five minute assigned topic the assigned topic being on a portion like of the Bill of Rights or an amendment from Constitution while your prepared speech was usually um on on a specific aspect of the Constitution so um it was a scholarship opportunity I'm not going to lie that was probably the biggest uh draw and so you know so I decided to go and try and so what happened is I prepared a um speech it was on article two of the constit article five of The Constitution and basically it was about um how you can amend it and so what happened is that I went to um I local uh District L and I was the only one so um uh I might have won so yeah so what happened then was then I was told uh they gave me a lot of notes and that's one of the biggest parts of this is that the American Legion is extremely helpful in getting you prepared for this competition I think one of the biggest notes they said is speak up and make sure you know what you're saying before you're saying it so it you don't stumble you know um get a biger presence in the room and really project your voice because these are slightly elderly people so you want to make sure your voice is heard throughout the room and so you know these tips are really helpful and then definitely got a lot of support from my teachers um Miss Kane and Miss lingerin were were really helpful in this um and then so what happened is techn usually you go to a department level and so forth what happened is nobody ran in the department or I think another level County county or Department wasn't run for so I ended up immediately going to States and you know I met five other people um all from various backgrounds and these were all people who like had their own like you know interest and stuff but they all decided to do it not just for a scholarship opportunity but because they were also just interested in this um contest and so I gave my speech and in the end got third place and um yeah it was a really great experience and I do plan on doing again and I do plan on doing more involvement with the American Legion at um boy State this great so what did you pick for your five minutes there's questions my five what did you pick for your five minutes part you said you did eight minutes are prepared right and then oh the assigned topic it was they picked it and so for um us we got Amendment two of the Constitution okay and so you know the assigned topic usually what you do is um you pick a few like cases and really analyze where Supreme Court's going what like political thing like for example with amendment to I did um you know recent cases of uh McDonald versus Chicago 2010 uh Helen Keller versus uh DC I think it was 2008 and then the recent New York Rifle and Pistol Association case and so you know I expanded on how the Supreme Court was expand bending on those rights and such very nice impressive good thank you congrats congratulations congratulations [Applause] congratulations the committee reports um policy committee uh Greg asked me to just say the obviously the policies are all attached under E3 they were shared with you this is first reading if you didn't get a chance to go through them previously we have three weeks before the next board meeting go through them just Reach Out directly to me and if you want to copy Greg ask chair with any questions okay the committee did meet and we went through it again as as I've shared um increasingly uh of of recent times there are fewer and fewer options involved in many of these policies the laws are written much more specifically than they used to that kind of narrow the field in in terms of our options and choices but as I said read through them if you have any questions reach out to Greg and I together and we can share with you what the committee's discussion points were thank you and negotiations committee all I can report right now is we continue to meet and we're working towards hopefully getting a uh questions or comments on these personel carock yes sorio yes abstain to B uh P5 number two excuse me no no excuse me number one I'm sorry right yes Edmonds yes Garrison yes Gunther yes Harman yes out yes motion is approved um first off we're getting we're approaching that time it's now the middle of April you don't have to let us know yet but I just wanted to put in on everybody's radar graduations are June 12th 13 and 14 the order this year is Creek oakrest gamy so 12 is Creek 13 is oakrest 14 is gaming so again Tom will um you know when we get into May Tom will will put out requests or questionnaires for who wants to go where but I just wanted to give you a chance to start putting it on your calendar um the gamy food competition last week was mentioned um I acknowledge I ate six meals the span of an hour and a half Not Unusual huh um but I the kids were awesome the teachers it was a combination of culinary and business teachers and kids so it was truly you know the perable front of the shop back of the shop conversation um but what I wanted to to recognize was there were two chefs there um both with extensive ties and relationships in Atlantic City one who had worked as an executive chef in Atlantic City for about 35 years before retiring recently so they were able to give the kids really direct immediate feedback on um not only how things tasted but the importance of presentation the importance of prep you know did you taste it did you taste it 10 times did you taste it a hundred times if you didn't taste it a hundred times you didn't taste it enough like it was really great to have these guys working with the kids so I just wanted the board to know as much fun as it was the kids in in addition to the the uh instruction that was delivered by our teachers were getting individualized group by-group feedback from two professional chefs from Atlantic City um the oakrest community Wall of Fame was mentioned um I wanted to give a shout out to one of the inductees this year because the re large part of the reason why I nominated him was his work for this board Billy cheum will be going in with this class this year um you know for his time coaching in the community as well as his time dedicated to this board so I just wanted everybody you know here to to kind of hear that um and then the last thing I wanted to spend a couple of minutes on um I was fortunate enough to be invited to the new Atlant care CEO's launch last week in Atlantic City uh titled it vision in 2030 um I'm sure most of you probably read articles in the newspaper it was about an hour and 40 minutes um some of the highlights that you know you all know the educational programs that we offer especially our magnets in this District um they're talking about doubling the footprint or the square footage of the Galloway campus so you know that is right in the heart of our district um they're talking about adding five to 6,000 jobs over the next roughly eight years um and it's not just and and I've already begun conversations with a couple of different people at Atlanticare and this is what I wanted you to all know I'm G to be going into the city probably next Monday and sitting down with a couple people from Atlanticare because in addition to just the biomedical magnet and oh look it's Atlanta care they're going to be adding security guards they're going to be add in uh paramedics so that is our joint program with AIT that we're running at abami they're going to be as as Ai and Technology advances they're going to be introducing an entire new I don't even know the right word um form of community medicine that relies on interactive Communications with people and their technology and and they're going to need technicians to monitor that so I'm thinking of our computer science magnet kids at abami and some of our our other computer kids in all three buildings and it and it was just this ongoing list of things they're going to be adding they're actually looking to partner with Drexel to open a medical school on the Atlantic City Campus so we already through our biomedical magnet at oakrest we do some work with Drexel we have some kids that go to Drexel honestly our closest relationships and most of our kids have gone to Jefferson but certainly there's already a connection to Dre Drexel that we will just be able to expand as they come into Atlantic City so I mean I sat there for an hour and 40 minutes taking notes firing off emails to people after but you know if if if three quarters of what they are looking to accomplish over the next eight years is accomplished in this County we are going to have an opportunity not only for our College Bound kids but for our non-college students to really build relationships um one of the topics that came up and this is the last thing I'll share from that day as I was before it's it began I was talking with two individuals from Atlanticare you know that two years ago we started partnering with them on a hiring Blitz for our seniors we have 55 seniors doing firstr interviews the last week of April across the district that's 55 students who are beginning to interview for full-time jobs so it's working um we have you know we have one of our graduates from two years ago who is part of Atlanta Care's um you know this approach Works PR campaign being used in their literature and being used in their advertisements to promote this idea of interviewing and hiring kids right out of high school so you know hopefully as Atlant care grows Stockton was involved you know the relationship we have with Stockton especially over the last few years hopefully if this County can keep this momentum going we are really going to open more doors for our students I just wanted you to all know that you know those that Vision 2030 that Atlanta care is a part of we are already having conversations with what role we can play so thank you exciting stuff um I really just have one thing under my report uh the Atlanta County meeting is going to be a hybrid meeting it's May 7th if you haven't already signed up um just let Sylvie know uh or Tom know and um it's a great Bay Country Club for the people going in person at 6 o'clock if you're tuning in virtually at 6:45 they're going to be recognizing board members from um Atlantic County for different Milestones but also one of the people that will be there speaking is the Atlantic County Teacher of the Year Aaron Sharp so we'll be cheering um and then uh also the superintendent from um so just to reminder if you haven't signed up yet to sign up and then this is usually the one and then there'll be a Break um and then we'll have a schedule for next year all right anyone with old business yeah thank you Mrs H um Tom I was wondering I I don't necessarily know you're going to have the answer tonight but uh maybe in the next couple meetings um with us doing our solar project one of the things that we were looking at was a a savings on our electric with regards to you solar and also with the all the new lighting that we have done throughout the district is there any way to get a a comparison of of of savings that we maybe have seen over the last you know 12 months I'll get some information for you I mean the major savings we have was the savings with the roof new roof at exactly yeah the savings on the electric wasn't as as massive as we had kind of hoped but I'll get some information yeah you some upcoming meetings just get an idea where we are thank you any other old business he new business I have an addendum I need to move I'll move new business one through new business 5 Second new business one through new business 5 on the agendum have been moved and seconded any questions or comments on these items sorio yes Wright yes Edmonds yes Garrison yes Gunther yes Hartman yes yes how yes motion is approved any other new business very quiet night okay if there's no other new business I'll open the meeting up to the public any wish to speak on any matter hi my name is Charles coko winsel Township um my daughter Emily has been part of the district since first grade uh well kindergarten yeah so uh 10 years in the district and she's uh one of three blind students to go through the system um Mrs matis Terry matis has done an amazing job up until sixth grade and now Chris Troy has been taken over uh we live in Winslow we were we found out pretty quick from wiso Township over 10 years ago that they did not have services for her so we looked and then a lot of resources told us about the amazing job this District did um for me I'm you know I didn't I didn't come from this part of New Jersey so I didn't know much about Galloway but my daughter has done really well with their IEPs and thrived we did understand that when my daughter came that the understanding not in writing but the understanding is what she would go through High School through 12th grade here and then we just found out within the last couple of months that that's not the case so we're here to appeal uh as to why that is but also you know for her to not be here anymore means also changing her Aid and for all that my daughter's been through coming from an orphanage to un States when we adopted her being born premature and blind she has done very well um here my daughter actually wants to speak as well but she wanted me to go first as her dad so your name hello this is um Emily Coco um I live in winow Township and and um so for the last few months um I've heard that I'm not able to go to gway for high school and this I've been in gway for 10 years so far and I've had some really excellent services and AIDS over the past 10 years of my schooling and I'm afraid that if I don't go to gay next year um I'm not going to have an aid who's going to be as experienced with braille as my current Aid and my Aid I had before I had two wonderful aids for the past 10 years and I've also have made some really good friends in gway and I want to go with them to high school and I I love Gay so so much and and I've been cared for and respected and I've always felt valued and I've and I've had AIDS who were very knowledgeable with what I need and I've been doing really well over the past 10 years I've worked hard even though I can't see not even it's not holding me back from getting good grades on everything and I'm getting the proper help that I need in gway thank you very much and we do want to thank gway for all the services we received here all these years thank you thank you very much good evening um I'm Mr Raina I'm the superintendent uh for greater a harbor Regional um I think we're touching on a little bit of of where this um conversation went astray some months ago in the sense that Galloway and greater har greater rake Harbor are not the same district Galloway only operates K through or prek through 88th grade greater EG Harbor operates three high schools oakrest abami and Cedar Creek um I I there have been extensive conversations between myself and the Galloway superintendent um there are some concerns regarding I understand the messaging that was delivered from some from a Galloway uh administrator um we've attempted to deal with that I I don't want to drag out in public your you know where where you are or what we're talking about um Miss seagler sitting to your left sir is our district or our director of special services I would ask that maybe the five of us could have a conversation so we could make sure that you are hearing exactly what we have been saying now for upwards of about four or five months make just I want to make sure the conversation or the communication is clear because we are not the same district that you have been attending and and that is a large part of this conversation but if I could ask you to share your contact with with the young lady sitting to your left then I will make sure that we set up an opportunity to talk is that okay yes yeah it is and thank you for clarifying that okay uh I would ask though that as Winslow seeks now other districts um to open the doors for our daughter that this district for for this school right here would would also consider our daughter okay thank you thank you very much thank you thank you anyone else was wishing to speak tonight we have a resolution for executive session we sure do purs section 78 the own public meeting act the following subjects will be discussed in a session of the Board of Education closed to the public personnel and potential litigation um could I add student matters please is anticipated that the it mentioned in the resolution can be disclosed to the public when a decision is made upon the same or in the case of personnel issues when the need for confidentiality no longer resists formal action conclusion of executive session may be taken need a motion so moved second all those in favor I those against those abstaining
