##VIDEO ID:Wf1tusgNC4s## e e e [Music] my glasses [Music] [Music] gr this group like this group was like a you know she super and son [Applause] [Music] so she just [Music] off's House Drive because [Music] [Music] [Music] that's pretty awwesome are we afraid exist [Music] yeah I never can you stop getting hurt that hear you I you I'm just stop it stressing me out more than mine [Music] is like bring meeting to order adequate notice has been given this meeting as required by law notice has been fored for publication in District official newspapers hosted the absam CED Creek and ois high schools and fored to all the clerks of the municipalities within this school district there are two opportunities to address the members of the board the board values and welcomes comments and opinions from residents as long as remarks are not personal or disc courious the public comment for meeting allows the board to listen to community members and hear their opinions of school policy and operations the first public portion reserve for persons wishing to speak about agenda items only the second opportunity foll the action items when residents May address the board on any school related issue each speaker is asked to limit their comments to three minutes and you're not permitted to yield your time to another the public comment portion of the meeting during both sessions will not see 30 minutes upon being recognized persons wishing to speak should stand and identify themselves by name and T please stand for the flag salute to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all and I ask for a moment of silence Edmond here Garrison here Gunther here Harman here haa here cly sorio here right here here you have a thank you um there's no minutes tonight to approve so I'll move to special presentations yes I'm going to start off asking uh director of Special Special Projects Brenda Callahan to join us this coming year to try to improve the of our multilingual Learners in our school and all three and then I'll really quick you recall last time last year we really to focus on access for El testing you'll hear me say El you'll hear me say ESL because those still exist federal government still refers to and we talk about and is consider andall School reps are being home you know our students are the reports that go home are very [Music] of really important not justl what's that going to look like in my classroom um they do really [Music] teers so this is just kind of giving you a basine you see the break down school and level participation but again numb in each of little categories small it prevents being able to I can't show you give you a little Baseline as well last year we assess 66 students doesn't seem like a big difference but it's 30% and spring not4 our students that we coming some students directly from grade our and again atation so we have about 11% of our students are able to exit able to exit ourr and if you recall we first started talking about this expectation is that studentes proficiency years before before you go off with that so if a student is in our district as a freshman they leave and they come back as a senior um where is that any of that what they what they accomplished in that one year carryover or they basically have to start start over basine so when student ENT schol provide access when they get the first access for that's basine and then project out that and that's how but again we're hovering around these I'm what I did highlight where the major percent and really as kind of what you're going to see speaking and again speaking and writing those are the two areas across the board that we see and so what do we do we operate highr high that cultural of our students Su days really experience we have added on a regular basis now they go where the students are in their other class try toage couple teachers and I time sum a and Country of usol system and then say here's your schedule no here's not your schedule you so we said let's do away with that that's going to we also are going betiz that b literacy assessment to assess the literacy one of issues that and we've also been working to clear that up the there's a lot of things that we really be very thoughtful about rather than just that compliance check with this question can I ask just one or two questions how many different languages do we typically have at any point in time um it's building okay so that a very different answer going to have the larg of I want to say oh wow so there's a lot of different languages so there there there are also some I'm sorry but there are also some that there's two individuals speaking that language in the district and its siblings so I mean it it does there are examples where it gets that specific so some of the challenge is that we may not have a staff member that necessarily speaks that language absolutely do not for some of the languages um I know there's a lot of new technology that specifically has like almost like an earbud that will translate for the Young For The Individual and that's secondary earbud translate for the staff member have we ever considered utilizing newer technology to make it more reasonable okay yeah I mean and and my answer Amy would would be I mean certainly we'll go back to Joo style and we'll we'll say you know is there anything we're missing but we've never said know in this area somebody comes up and says hey I've got an idea hey here's a new resource we've always been open to it yeah and I love the fact that you're looking at whether or not there were deficits previously because I know either in the new culture or the new language or it might be a student who didn't come from this type of school and that might be challenged um that has to be incredibly frustrating do we also give specific like mental health supports to make sure those students are getting everything they need so just to cope with that those challenges typically what we'll do is and Brenda kind of touched on it over the last year the teachers have kind of shifted gears where the teachers are going out and being more proactive to to assist with that we will make take other steps such as um there's only one guidance counselor so there's a strong connection that individual knows all the resources that are available instead of being spread across four or five different people I honestly don't know if anybody has ever asked specifically for that reason but I will share with you that we have absolutely had not only students but parents enter into our tier 2 Pro counseling programs because of issues they were going through at the time so we have responded when that has been there absolutely if that could be proactive because I just I mean feeling like nobody understands you feeling like nobody necessarily like you can't necessarily openly speak your needs I just can't imagine how challenging that must be and I I just want to make sure that we're providing them the mental health supports that are we just have so many good ones in this District thank you guys yep thank you for considering those details I appreciate that I I also want want to just add and Amy those are those are very good questions um as we went now to a district supervisor visor and one person is responsible for this across all three buildings it Beyond just that idea of there being consistency there's now a better chance of what's working in one building being shared across the buildings because it is truly one supervisor who is seeing and hearing everything that's being done across all three and and I'll also share and I know he wouldn't mind me sharing that because we've talked about it openly ourselves he comes from a bilingual household whose parents are first generation so he absolutely has a personal connection and understanding to what these families are going through I know working with Hamilton one of the biggest challenges was always that when you have a student that's bilingual and a parent that isn't sometimes like officials will talk to the student and ask the student to translate for the parent and that's just something sometimes so demoralizing to a student because certain things that we wouldn't share with a normal English-speaking student we're sharing with a a multilingual student because of the the nature of the situation rather than what's best for them mental healthwise so just like little considerations of making sure that you know we're really recognizing the fact that we need to treat them across the board with those extra supports is appreciated thank you so theya unlock their ability to together again [Music] where does what I was was when we saw up watch CES went simar but again was of piece that test different and again keep in mind that 2022 T kids assments so we took our kids how 11 building we're spending a lot a lot deer diet is [Music] strategy is theg very yes I just would like to thank you and um express my um happiness that's a correct word about the clarity and the um Excellence of your reports your presentations are always clear I have a clear expectation of the work that you do and I know you do an EXC job and I just want to thank you for that it's clear and it's understandable to me thank you okay thank you Brenda good thank you oh yeah yeah yeah um I can't see you but I know you're back there Mike mcge stand up Mike MC Spotlight on Mike okay um just our chance to say congratulations on your retirement um I say that with a heavy heart though because I really will miss you um here at Oak Creston in the district but I wish you nothing but the best um I just wanted to make sure I mentioned that not only for the long time you're in the district you're a great employee but it seems like when you became principal you kind of found the perfect fit so for like building relationships within the community and the students and just being a kind caring person um you'll definitely be missed so uh thank you for your dedication to the district to the students and uh congratulations on behalf of the board so um I have been fortunate enough to out of the over the last 24 years work directly um hand inand with Mike for all um but about four of those um either as a vice principal or a teacher and a supervisor and then a vice principal and a supervisor here when we open Cedar Creek in our second year Mike came over and was our ad um and then when I came over here as principal as everybody knows when I moved down the home Mike Mike came over here to be principal um and what I said to two mike in front of our 27 administrators a couple of weeks ago I'll share for the board because I think it's important you understand to kind of touch on what Carol said Mike is one of the people who would get down on the ground and sit next to a kid that was in crisis and spend an hour having a conversation with them um Mike is the student who who said that's my kid when it was a young man who was in trouble in the community or a young man who had a lot of of concerning issues his household um mikee sought out those kids and made sure that no matter who they were or no matter where they came from they knew that there was an adult who cared and at the end of the day aside from everything else we do think of how much time and effort we have put in over the years to try to get kids to understand that somebody cares and in my 24 years in this District I don't think I've worked with anybody that does it better than Mike mcgay so Mike personally and professionally I thank you I will miss you um I have a plaque on behalf of the Board of Education that I want to read for you for everyone and then uh I'll let uh president ha and and vice president Gunther give it to you an appreciation of Michael McGee teacher coach administrator Mentor leader in the greater Ray caror Regional High School District from September 1 2000 to August 31st 2024 for you have inspired motivated and guided an entire generation of students and staff and we thank you for your dedication passion and selflessness best wishes for happiness and health thank [Applause] you now you got to take a picture [Music] pict I told James Quick told James know but it was a time piece My Life um I want to thank lot of you guys been around since I've been here as a coach teacher um this is a special place uh it really is really as I told today the other day not many places like this and I'm I'm blessed to have been allowed to pursue different a of my professional life in this District um a coach to a teacher to a supervisor to an athletic director and it is about the relationships you make with people home rrive and uh I have been blessed I thank you guys it's the most supportive Board of Education you hear other districts of what they go through I haven't seen any of that my 24 years on this district and the district's always got us what we needed to be successful uh and most of the time we gave us what we wanted also which is just a thre to everyone sitting here so I thank you guys from the bottom of my heart I keep talking m from the [Applause] stop um I'll move on to committee reports Personnel committee Carrie anything to report um I'll give a quick update uh there were four topics the Personnel committee met on August 1st I believe I shared the agenda with the entire board board um we discussed the oest principal who we will be formally approving this evening um we discussed uh without going into details or names a couple of secretary positions that are being moved from part-time to fulltime um really what we're doing though is it's an anticipation of a retirement that is happening very shortly so we're essentially going from one full-time and two part-time to two full-time long term for the district um we also discussed I am working hand inand with Galloway Township Schools to share an additional part-time secretary that will assist us assist our nurse at abami and also assist with the Galloway preschool program as that gets up and running there um and then the fourth topic um was just getting permission for Tom from the committee to discuss uh over the coming year um what we may be looking to do in terms of some security work moving forward Fair okay good thank you uh Athletics and activities Brian yes thank you Mr H um the act the Athletics and Activities Committee met on Wednesday August 14th the following topics were discussed the 2324 participation numbers uh for athletics performing arts and activities and I'm happy to say that both um abami and oakrest numbers were up from last year uh Cedar Creek uh were up slightly but pretty much stayed the same uh one note that I think was particular uh interesting and and very good for us because it's one of our um goals as a board is that the Junior and senior numbers are up in all uh areas of participation so and again all three buildings so I think that's u a great um thing as well um I was also told that the advisers will be G given a list of all the students that are signing up so any of those students that aren't uh participating that did sign up the advisor will have a list to reach out to them to get them involved uh we also uh spoke about the revised NJ siaa um rulings and guidance for the 2024 year uh mainly for uh fans and uh code of conduct uh we're still going to give out our parents the uh code of conduct U letters and we're also going to post online and around the fields the new uh spectator code of conduct that is um been put out by the state um also if a spectator gets ejected uh because of bad behavior they're going to be required to uh go to mediation classes uh and they will have to be uh completed before they'll be allowed back on school property we're still going to be using Hometown ticketing and I believe we're going to try to put that code of conduct uh on Hometown ticketing somehow not I'm not sure if that's a a definite but we talked about maybe having that as a another way for our fans to understand what the uh code of conduct is um we also reviewed the football security procedures for the coming 2024 year a couple of things that are are new uh 75 minutes after the start of uh the game is when the uh Gates will be closed and no ad admittance you know nobody allowed in um before it was halftime but we really couldn't tell exactly how much that was going to be when that was going to be because you know games are never the same so now it's going to be a 75 minute at that point there's nobody allowed in uh there will be metal detectors now at all three stadiums uh two at each uh at each entrance uh if I'm not mistaken uh we are also going to have additional entrances made at Cedar Creek and a widened entrance at oakrest to make the uh uh flow you know much easier abami already has two so that's not going to be a problem U we're also going to make sure that we require all students to have their IDs and all student of any age I believe has to be accompanied by an adult uh we're going to continue with the dogs that we've had security dogs uh we'll also have our sro's local law enforcement and KD security there as well so I think U you know people are going to see a big difference and we're also making sure that uh we get the word out that you know don't show up five minutes before the game because it's going to be a long line you may you may miss the first quarter um we also went over the performance Arts admissions uh the fees uh we talked about you know our online ticketing and that there is usually a a um a fee assess you know for the ticketing so instead of us having that fee shown on the ticket we're now just going to figure out what that fee is and charge it accordingly so it'll be just one price if it's $5 that is including the the ticketing cost um we also went over our coaching updates and as of right now for the fall and winter we're we're we're set I believe there was one coach needed for Cedar Creek in the spring but you know that that's you know still some time away uh we also talked about other fees uh naturally for football admittance is going to be $5 for adults $3 for students but the bigger topic was the actual facility use fee um you know we we do charge for facility use if it's a u profit or nonprofit organization that that is not you know Community Based or anything to do with with students um we we looked at those and and um James brought up the the fact that you know Stockton is charging four or five times the amount that we're charging for for the same type of facility so um we're going to have that uh Revisited um James is going to come up with a new a new uh chart for for costs and we're going to bring that back to the committee to uh increase our our fees for again for mostly for the profited you know companies you know people that are making a profit off of using our facility so um we're so going to be free for th those uh Community um service Community uh organizations and again if it's a team that has majority of the players on the team uh from the district but we're not going to be charging as well I think that was it if anybody has anything else that I forgot to add go thank you thank you are there any board member reports at this time Garrison thank you yes M hary um abami hosted Cheer Camp they do little Braves Camp every year which I hear this year was very successful lots of kids and the I think abami head coach is also the Renegades head coach so I know all the girls from the little girls and it'll be a good transition they'll probably keep coming and come to our schools I think they had over 60 kids this year so it was good very good anyone else okay this time I'll open the meeting up to the public anyone wish to speak on any agenda item okay seeing none information items any further I just want to take a moment to on behalf of the board um welcome Mr Manning [Applause] and I want to say we're very excited to work with you um as you lead oest in the future we know you're going to continue Mr McGee's work building that relationship strengthening it the community of Hamilton Township and oest and we look forward to the future with you um take another minute too and I just also at this time want to take a moment to thank uh the people who are involved in the process when we were looking for a new principal um there were a lot of people involved there actually oest students who gave the candidates um a tour and then there were was a committee made up of oakrest parents teachers administrators as well as District administrators and board members um Amy H myself were there and the superintendent the collaboration and discussions led to finding we believe the right person for oakrest and uh so I I thank the people that came and and gave their time and really helped us it wasn't really hard to find the right person if the right person comes before you so welcome congratulations you don't get a plaque until you leave so um I'll just piggy back on that as I as I roll into the superintendent report um I I am very confident that Mike is going to be successful moving forward I'm also very glad that for only about a week I had to continually say Mike and Mike because that would have gotten very old very quickly um but you know as as um Carol said and as Amy can certainly attest um there were there were really really good conversations about what's important in a leader and what what's important to a building and when you have teachers and administrators and parents who live in the community all coming together and spending that time in addition to getting the right person I think it's kind of rejuvenating for everybody in the room in terms of what what matter matters and you know for everybody in the room to hear and and i' I've said it to Mike when we met oneon-one what matters is energy what matters is Passion um what matters is being forthright um and what matters is knowing your strengths and being willing to use your strengths to make those around you better and I just ask you to just you know as you move forward that is what will make you successful those things right there so again congratul and welcome it is we had sta MERS everybody up had it was a lot of fun uh it is this is a very proud School a very proud building very proud staff uh and as first time principal really all you can ask for right especially when I know that I've got but I've had really years thank [Applause] you um one quick little caveat before I move on it just dawned to me as I was sitting here looking at Scott Mike and Mike um and and keeping in mind that a former administrator when we were all together at Cedar Creek is now a principal at another high school in Atlanta County so you talk about how we got Cedar Creek off on the right foot there were five principls out of seven administrators in that building five High School principles working together so there must have been something good going on so you know let's not forget what we all learned from each other in in that scenario too um segue to the welcome wagons and the orientation Creek had their Welcome Wagon Thursday oakrest and gamy were today um orientations are this week oest is tomorrow is Thursday I mean we are we're here um teachers come in next Wednesday and Thursday officially for full day professional development but there's teachers in and out of the buildings now all day long um the amount of kids in the building it's great you know July is the beginning of July you're kind of like okay it's quiet it's nice I can get some work done we can move at kind of a leisurely pace and and then after a while you realize you didn't get into this business to to constantly look at listen and and and hear adults you got into it to be around kids and the building starts to change the middle of August and come back to what it's supposed to be you know and I'm sitting in my office last week late one night getting some stuff done and the band is still going and and and you kind of remember what's going on with that and you know a couple days later or a different day you come in early and and there's kids at 7:30 in the morning who are already half an hour into their workout down on the track or or in the wait room and you realize that you're kind of reminded after a month away from it that these high schools are 15h hour a day Community institutions um and and it's good to get back into that Vibe and as we've got the welcome wagons and the orientations and everything going the freshmen are coming in this week it we're in a good spot and it and it reminds you I mean you saw you look at the floor and you say okay well they waxed this since the last time you were all here like those all those things are happening and the buildings are starting to come together and a Langs group you know you walk down a hallway one day and there's three computer labs worth of technology in the hallway and there's seven teacher desk with computers everywhere and then you walk by a week and a half later and the hallway is polished and everything's gone back in the room and nine times out of 10 everything is working the way it's supposed to so a credit to a Lang and his staff a credit also um you know there's nobody here from the group but buildings and grounds the amount of work that goes into these buildings in the summer and it is a personal passion for for so many of them that they want the kids or they want the staff when they walk back in the building to recognize the effort that was put in over the summer and we always make a a point the first day of school when we're talking to the teachers if I don't do it to the whole staff the principals do it when they're talking to their building walk up and and and put your arm around the shoulder of a custodian and say thank you because this is a 65y old building that looks like this you know and we've done some some stuff along the way but it it looks the way it does because of the people that put the time in and the care um so again a huge thank you to the custodians and the buildings and grounds and everything they do and then the last group over the summer um the secretary Aries who as as we are all winding down and we're trying to catch our breath and close out one year they're all already working on the next year they're getting all that stuff done they're working on the mailings to close out the year theyve spent the last week working on everything for the principles to get ready for the year coming up so all of the secretaries again the registrars the technology and the data it really does become a 12mon institution but some of us are working a week ahead of time some of us are working a month ahead of time some people in District are already working three months ahead of time and to get everybody pulling on the same page there's 500 people in this District who now have two weeks until kids show up and that's what we're down to and when you think about it that way you there's a part of it that says oh my God there's still a lot to do but we'll get there um but for the record I would just ask that the association certainly pass along my thanks to everybody that works all summer along to get these buildings ready for for the staff and the students as they come in um on the Staffing front I have one unfilled um certificated position we're actually under new business going to address that um but we are in a good spot look it's August 20th or 19th every year there's always one you get a late term resignation or somebody who you thought you were going to hire something falls through we're in a good spot we've got got a couple of long-term Subs a couple of leave Replacements you saw the number of leave Replacements that are being approved tonight in the agenda um so you know we're in a good spot though the principles and the guidance supervisors the master schedules are done kids all have have eight classes um teachers are all teaching five and and those that are willing to teach six are are teaching six um but credit again to the principles and the guidance supervisors from for making sure that is all done um I do want to give a uh a little bit of a addition to what Brian said I should have done it before I apologize the athletic especially the football security messages are going out to all messages went out today to parents and community members in the district hey here are the guidelines be ready be attentive you know we're telling you right now show up early this is what we're going to be doing the ads are going to be sending it two weeks ahead of time to all of our visiting opponents um and one of the things we're a change we're making from last year last year we sent it to all the ads and half of the AA team's parents would walk up and say what are you talking about I had no idea so this year we're also sending it to the visiting School principls thinking principals aren't going to want to get the phone call from parents hearing you know I showed up at abami after a 45 minute ride and I had a 40 minute wait to get in in the gate so the ABS will be sending that notification two weeks ahead for every away game to both athletic directors and principles so we're going to do our best to try and make getting in the in the stadiums as easy as possible um and that's all I have thank you okay thank you um all right so I just have two brief things one is the Atlanta County meeting um it's the 12th of September at six o'clock Great Bay it's hybrid you can do it online you know like if you can't make it in person um but I believe it's AI is the discussion for that night right so it sounds like it would be something interesting so if you can't be there and can do it online that's great and for anybody that does make it we'll try to remember to share with other people when we get back um if you haven't signed up yet let Tom know too and then uh James already said it but I'll just say like a quick thank you to anybody does any kind of Sumer work to help get the buildings ready for the students for the people to come here you know whether they're doing it outside inside teachers setting up their room secretaries um thank you and that's all I have I'll move on to Old business Brian yeah um we approved tonight the um the co-op I guess it's considered Co-op or the shared service with AIT for the law on Public Safety um when we talked about this last year I thought we talked about those students are going to be abami students for activities for sports and everything like that okay U I didn't know if that changed if they want to play any sport it's it's at abami okay then my followup question to that are we talking to acit about any other um shared service that we could you know put into oakrest or even Cedar Creek for you know more more like this you know so so I as soon as this was kind of okay we're going to move forward I did throw a second idea out and' had a second conversation um I will also say that there were four or five other superintendant in the room who might might think that it would be better that somebody else gets a first before we get a second but I have shared my idea in the future for something that I think would work particularly well in this building I'll just leave it at that okay thank you any other old business okay new business we do have it to read yes motion to allow that one opening with your permission if I can find if we find somebody in the next week and they're starting interviews at the end of this week I would like if I can move if the person's not currently working anywhere start them before the next board meeting so they can actually be with kids on the first day of school so if you guys are okay with it that's an we're asking what was the position again it's a heal and fette teacher okay so we need a motion um can I ask a question before uh we should I need I need someone to make a motion so move good um for something like that would it be appropriate to share that with the Personnel committee so at least some board members have an opportunity to to see it since it's going to be kind of agreed upon prior to the next board meeting yeah okay but that shouldn't stop it from um from you being able to hire him early and then a retroactive motion I don't know that we would be able to all get together but I'll get information out to the Personnel committee here's here's what I'm looking to do why thank you okay the addendum I guess would be new business one vote what we have to vote V I know I was just going to say the new I was going to ask for call okay sorry H yes sorio yes Wright yes Edmonds yes Garrison yes Gunther yes Hartman yes Al yes motion approved okay any other new business I just want to know um for the board just for the information uh the gifs state of the fund dinner is scheduled for December 3rd so we put that in your calendars I will be sending out notice when we get a little closer and also this past Thursday we had our annual barbecue for the support staff of James and Carol Bo mentioned how hard our support T staff works
