##VIDEO ID:5514Ex42DfI## e good evening call to order oh can you'all hear me yep call to order the meeting of the Hamilton one Regional school committee on Thursday October 24th 2024 at 701 p.m. um and I invite you to join us in the Pledge of Allegiance flag United States America stand indivisible jice okay I'd like to um just let everyone know that this meeting is being recorded and uh live streamed on HW you can um first up on the agenda are citizens comments I'm going to wait a moment to see whether we have anyone on Zoom it doesn't appear to me that we have anyone in the room who wants to offer a Citizens comment is that correct hold on as of right now there is nobody in the room let's um all right and it looks like that there are no citizens on Zoom offering comment at this point um and so we will go ahead and close the zoom okay uh next up is a review of a portion of our uh school committee protocols uh Jen as elected members of the Hamilton Wenham Regional school committee we including the superintendent accept the high honor and trust that has been placed in us to ensure that the students of the district receive the best education possible to that end we hereby commit to the following in the conduct of our business number four school committee members will Channel requests for information reports and data through the superintendent and the school committee chair rather than to staff the superintendent will ensure that each member of the committee has equal access to this information in a timely manner recognizing the importance of proactive communication and avoiding surprises school committee members will whenever possible contact the school committee chair Andor the superintendent in advance of a meeting if they have questions or concerns about an agenda item or we'll ask the chair at least 48 hours prior to a meeting that an item be placed on agenda thank you that was a long one I appreciate it um next up uh is our student uh representative report um this unfortunately we have uh students unable to be there here this evening um so we will have that report at another future date um next up is the consent agenda does anyone have any items that they would like to hold from the consent agenda um Julia would you be willing to do the honors make a motion oh yes and make a motion that the school committee accept the consent agenda as presented second second by Jen um all those in favor that is unanimous of the four members present and the motion passes um I would like to just take a moment um to acknowledge um all the exciting uh photog grants that were on there it was I can't wait to see SpongeBob the musical amazing SpongeBob the musical sounds exciting um and just I just I I really was thrilled to see uh so many different photog grants um oh the ukul the ukulele I'm sure everyone is very excited about absolutely the more ukuleles the better um um yeah so thank you to foda for that um okay um first on our uh new business is a presentation by um the principles on our school Improvement plans um I don't know Eric are you introducing or are we just going to like to uh call up all five of our principles who will be presenting their their annual School Improvement plans this evening we'll be starting with the middle school tonight Dr best will be representing the Middle School good evening Dr best hey good evening even thanks for having us out tonight um the middle school is putting forward four goals this year um our first goal should look fairly familiar uh we are going to continue to attend to our mtss strategies uh the theme is just continued expansion um so this year we are going to continue our I ready math screener we use that at all grade levels uh three times a year it's great data for us to have and we're able to pass that final eighth grade screening data onto to the high school so that there's a continuation of that um from the middle to the high school our reading screener our Dibble screener will do two to three times a year a number of our students are reading at or well above grade level so by the time they get to middle school if we have several years of consistent reading data um there are times where we would elect to do a two screenings rather than three so that's why that number uh is two to three for reading um we are going to we have created a schedule that allows for all students to have access to tier two supports um and we're using the term Dynamic rostering so this is something we've been working towards for the last couple of years our intervention and enrichment block has typically uh been part of our regular block schedule so a student that was uh assigned to an intervention enrichment most of our students had that it would fall perhaps their B Block their C block or their d block um we have taken the step this year to make intervention and enrichment schoolwide twice a week so two times a week the entire School all of the teachers Mrs gersin and I have a intervention enrichment block we are all committed to um getting students the support that they need um and we're able to uh better meet the needs of students that way historically some students have not been able to access that and this schedule allows for all students to be able to access those supports we are expanding our data meeting structure this is something that um we have started with a focus on our screeners in years past taking a look at our Tri annual screeners this year we're meeting monthly and we're bringing in classroom level data so we're going to be adding to all of that screening data unit tests projects quizzes so that we have a richer picture of how students are making their academic progress and if we do all those things we expect that that will lead to Improvement in student growth and achievement and you can see some different ways that we will be measuring that our second goal uh is sort of unique in that it is um it's attending to the need to create a a new course offering um just by a short back history this was kind of born out of um necessity as well as some feedback that we've received over the years at the middle school students can elect to te to take chor or band those are really the only classes that students can elect to take um we don't want to put someone you know playing a saxophone that has no interest in doing so so we're really happy to be able to offer those classes but it creates a bit of a scheduling nightmare um in that you know if you take it you have one path if you don't you have another historically students have missed out on a number of different things uh for example one year they missed out if they took course in band they would miss out on a day of PE a day of integrated arts and a day of enrichment across the week um one year they missed out on the intervention block and I got a lot of feedback from students and parents that that you know they really needed some opportunity for some additional support um one year the students that took course in band missed out on two of the integrated arts classes and that's not really our intent Health Falls in that group art music you know there's a lot of reasons that students should have access to all of that so in looking at that in a way to solve the problem in a more practical manner um we decided to create a complimentary class so rather than taking something away uh so to speak from students that were enrolled in bander course we're offering something else for students that are not interested in those uh classes one of the things I didn't mention is we don't really have much in the way at the middle school of stem offerings outside of science class uh or computer literacy and so really we see this new class as an opportunity to bring some extra opportunities um for those students uh and so that's why we're looking to create that class so we're going to spend the year um getting a lot of different input we're working with curriculum leaders and teachers we want to survey staff and students and really start working on the structure of that course in January goal three uh deals with our English language arts curriculum last year we went through the curriculum selection and adoption process our uh team selected the hmh into literature curriculum there are a number of print and electronic resources there's a lot of writing support embedded teachers are really enjoying the plethora of resources that are available but this is a heavy lift anytime you adopt a new curriculum there's really a lot of work that goes into it just because you have you know a book or an electronic resource that does not at all take away the need for skilled instruction and so we wanted to make sure that we had some steps that provided our teachers the opportunity to collaborate access those resources and work really closely with um our assistant principal and our curriculum director to make sure that everyone's on the same page one of the advantages of having a schoolwide curriculum is that we anticipate seeing a through line if a student is working on the writing process for example in sixth grade and then they move on to seventh and that teacher has a slightly different approach and they move on to the eighth grade and that teacher has a slightly different approach all those approaches might be all well and good and valid but we are excited to realize a through line um from 6 to 8 eth grade and our last goal um we kind of went back and forth on whether this needed to be a school goal we knew it was something that or I felt it was something that we we ought to work on uh kind of uh lean in the way of action steps so let me explain that um real quick we are going to take the year to review our current grading practices and explore some opportunities to maybe strengthen and maybe align those practices to support uh not not only student learning uh but family communication we did an exercise in our first staff meeting this year um that was really a lot of fun we we had teachers independently fill out a survey about their grading process some of the practices they used some of the approaches that they took and we did it through Google form so we could see the immediate results and it was quite fascinating how everyone had some really uh fantastic ideas and approaches to how to grade and Report those grades but many of them were very different um from one another so that really has U sparked some really good conversation there were two areas that uh we were very very consistent in um the first is the staff really agreed that grades should reflect student learning that seems fairly obvious and the staff tended to agree with that um and that grades should also be a means to communicate student progress to stakeholders to families to the students to other teachers and so even though we had a lot of disperate um thoughts and practices that we brought to the table we were able to come together on two really important um components and so our action steps are really based on sort of the growth that we're finding throughout the staff meetings that we're doing um we're reading some articles we're having a lot of Spirited debate and conversation you know and our hope is that at the end of the year if we find some opportunity where alignment makes sense and some practices that really could benefit being Universal across the school that we'll find a way to adopt and and use those practices that's our four goals for the year does anyone have any questions great all right um thank you very much and bring up Mr menoni for representing the high school good evening everyone I'm here to present to you the school Improvement plan for for 2425 and you may have taken a look at this and noticed that a lot of them said continued from 23 24 well these are goals that I think need to be rolled over year to year because they are pretty heavy lifts and I think it requires uh more than just 180 days to get some of these things done um and it's important work and we want to make sure that we're doing it right so uh goal number one has to do with the continued expansion of our mtss structures uh first looking at tier one where this year we are implementing our new math curriculum for Algebra 1 geometry and Algebra 2 so that really touches our 9th 10th and some of our 11th graders um and the benefits of an instructional resource I think is that through line that Dr best was just talking about that common experience that really helps kids uh but also it gives teachers the materials and the resources that they need so that way their time planning can be spent thinking about students and izing data and designing the actual experience instead of chasing things down to do with kids in class so that's a tier one intervention that we're introducing this year also grade nine we've adopted a common set of executive functioning practices it's very important for our youngest Learners in the high school to understand what it is they're supposed to do when they enter a classroom something simple like that actually matters also at the other end the end of class it's really nice for kids to know what it is they're supposed to do when they go home um if you've asked your ninth grade student do you have any homework tonight and they say no that's probably not the right answer so we put a few things in place this year to make sure that the beginning of class the end of class and at home uh there's a really good common strong understanding of what what it is they're supposed to be learning how they're going to go about learning that and what the follow-up practice is for that I think that's really important for our ninth graders in addition to that we also see it kind of spread across uh to the 10th grade classrooms as well because a lot of teachers who are teaching n9th grade also teach 10th grade so they're just bringing that with them and I think it's a good thing um that that structure really helps everybody in terms of tier two interventions uh starting second quarter we're going to be implementing the Alex math program um that's a computer adaptive program that provides extra support in math we're going to start that um with our math ma students in math support block which runs during power block and it really just gives kids extra math not different math but extra math so that way they can stay on grade level with their peers while they also fill in any gaps that they may have um in addition to that another tier 2 intervention that we're going to put into place um by second semester is an Ela support block we've had a math support block we had it last year and it's running again this year it happens during power block um um and math was I think the greater need but there definitely is a call to have support around literacy so starting second semester we will have small group instruction extra instruction in reading comprehension and vocabulary uh to support the students that need that uh we're also going to be looking at putting some mcast specific support uh for identified students um mcast is not a target for us um you know we need kids to pass so they can graduate however ever um our accountability data does depend in part on um how kids do on mcast uh particularly those kids who have struggled the most so we're going to be putting into place another computer adaptive program that will help prepare kids for mcast while at the same time also filling in some of the skill gaps uh that they may have goal number two is a continuation from last year and it has to do with with making sure our Miles River Middle School students come to the high school um one thing I did not put on there as an action step because it's not my school but it's the very good work that Dr best and his staff are doing I think that does make a big difference when kids have a good experience in middle school they're probably going to want to stay with their friends so that's helpful uh but what can we actually do in the High School uh to make sure we have kids uh showing up on our doorstep who've been in our schools all along uh just continue to analyze the data uh to see the trends are and I'm happy to report that um you know we've gone from a high losing about over actually over a quarter of our kids three years ago down to about 15 or so percent um you know there's going to be a plateau at some point just because of the number of kids that the tech takes uh but we've definitely seen a decrease in the number of kids choosing to go to private school but we want to keep an eye on that year-over-year we also are learning from families why they choose not to go to the high school but also why they choose to go to the high school um and I think that's important because those are the things that we want to emphasize for families have or families have identified you know these are the three or four main reasons why we wanted our kids to stay in the school we're going to want to share that with the community and build on those strengths um just last night we had our annual High School open house where we invite students and families uh middle school and fifth grade in to see what the programs are that we have what they're going to be learning in high school and all the opportunities that are ail available to them uh and to do that we already had to update all of our materials um all the pr Associated things uh so that way again we could share all the good work that we're doing with the community uh this year we've taken Special Steps to increase our social media presence because that's where people's heads are at that's not where my head is at but I know that I'm not the only person in the world and a lot of us consume information through social media so what we've developed this year is a team of four students known as the social Squad uh Cam and Emily McIntosh Gabriella jwi and Patrick G uh what they're doing is they're managing our social media feed uh with the help of business teacher Laura wheeler and parent Stacy Hughes who works in the marketing field um that team together has uh done a great job you know getting much more information out there on social media to promote what we're doing and we're going to continue to to build that out as the year goes on looking down the road a little bit uh one thing that we would like to do second semester is have a joint eighth grade high school activity or opportunity so that way kids can get a little bit of a more of a feel for what uh high school is going to be uh but also who some of the leaders are in high school we want our youngest students to look to our leaders to see this is how you're supposed to act as a general this is how you act as a student uh to prepare yourself for the future so that's something that we're looking forward to second semester and I think uh the last last one is really important and as I've watched the backyard of our school change significantly uh over the past five or six months I think that that uh that facility is going to transform the communities tremendously um because of what can be done all year long um you know from sun up to sun down and after that and the community building that can happen I think it's going to be important for us to think carefully about how we can celebrate the commitment that uh these two communities have made to our kids and um that will I just think bring more people there and that's another way to encourage families to stay uh in the high school goal number three again portrait of a learner we did this last year uh we were able to build it out um in a small way but we want to continue to add the portrait of a learner to our daily operations so one thing that we've done um at our last faculty meeting was we took a look at our can do statements which took the the language and the competencies and we just really added the word I can in front of them just it's a little bit easier for kids to digest but as we read it over and over again as a faculty the way that the competencies and even the I can statements are written it's not something a high school kid would say or even necessarily understand especially in ninth and 10th grade um so we're looking at how can can we make that language a little bit more student friendly and at the same time retain the spirit of the language of the competencies uh the other thing that we're going to be doing second semester with a small group of kids probably about a dozen um is begin the Mastery learning record pilot um and the Mastery learning record is an online platform that allows kids to keep track of the evidence of and their reflection on the different competencies um and I think if you're going to have kids do something or expect something of them you have to measure it and this is a measurement tool for that um it's a way to curate things but also the Mastery learning record is actually accepted by a growing number of colleges alongside the the traditional transcript so it gives kids just another way to you know let colleges know who they are what they're about and I I think that the the pilot will let us know how we could start to build that over the next few years um and the other thing that we're actively working on right now we have a team that meets once a month is building a strategic plan for the rest of the year and Beyond uh related to portrait of a learner because we want to think about okay by June what do we want to have accomplished with this you know we have a couple of small things in place right now uh where we have a student of the month type program that recognizes kids who are showing these competencies you know we'll have the Mastery learning record um updated can do state statements but there's some other deeper U more intentional pauses that we want to do during the school years with teachers and students around um how they are attending to these different competencies of the portrait of a learner so that's what that strategic plan is designed to do is to give us the structure where we can actually put these things into place uh goal number four has to do with doing learning outside of the walls of the high school um kids spend 17 hours of their day outside of high school and they are actually learning so we want to emphasize that a little bit uh we had our 9th grade class recently attend a uh class field trip up to Maine uh Mount agenus and then they get to go play at the beach for a little bit after that uh but I think that's a good experience for them uh they have to kind of relearn each other a little bit and you know how they're going to conduct themselves in a very different setting outside of school that takes them out of their routine out of their comfort zone we had a number of team building activities on top of the mountain for them to do and it was kind of cool to see different kids step up um who may be kind of quiet in an academic setting in the building however when you put them outside rules change a little bit and you see different people climb to the top a little bit so that was pretty cool and that's something that we plan to do with all of our ninth grade students um we've increased the Outreach to seniors and families uh around our internship program we've already made that that information available to parents who attended the college webinar in September um and uh we have a small team who will be pushing more of that information out in December um related to that is we're investigating uh The Innovation career pathway this is a program that the state runs um where it asks students to take um a pathway of courses uh but also uh they want students to have a significant internship experience uh that's related to those um pathway courses and you choose from I think it's six different career Pathways uh it could be business uh it could be life science it could be um it anything like that we want to investigate carefully though if this is going to work for us and I bring that up because we've had discussions at uh as capan League principles um you know who's doing the Innovation career Pathways and and one theme that has arisen is are we big enough ourselves as a school to actually do that uh because there are some demands placed upon the school um and we do have a small pool of kids and you know how many of these Pathways can you do could you perhaps replicate it uh without adding some extra layers on because if you participate in a state program you do get some nice State funding but then you also get the nice State expectations and data reporting uh which might not be what you're looking for so really what this team team is doing is they're investigating the feasibility of it and we hope by April they'll really have an answer for us about yeah we could go ahead with this and here are recommended Pathways or pathway uh that we would like to pursue and the application to become a part of that program actually happens in the summer and it's a multi-step application and it takes a while to get it up and running I mean it's a great program um the question is is it for us you know in a in a sign ific consideration is just the size of our school and the fifth goal that we have again it's a continuation because I know that looking at performance gaps is something that the state would like us to do um and it's also just a curiosity that we have you know why do we see some pockets of kids who uh consistently aren't doing as well as we might hope um so our assistant principal Jeff Becker has really taken this on uh and he's looked at three years of data to really get an idea of the different gaps that do exist now you can certainly take the data that the state gives you uh but when we combine that with some of the internal metrics that we have um you know we're seeing different groups of kids that you might not necessarily think about um as underperforming um so Jeff is continuing the organization of all that he will be handing that off to our curriculum leaders and building leadership team uh uh to see what what might be that performance Gap um of greatest interest you know also doing some comparative work with other capan league schools I think that's really helpful um because you can kind of look at your data in a vacuum but unless you contextualize that with the schools around you the people that you work with um sometimes you're working in the dark uh so we'll do that and eventually second semester we'll start choosing a particular Gap to prioritize that doesn't necessarily mean we're going to fix it by the end of the year because I there's a significant amount of learning that still has to happen um and a historical analysis I think is really going to be important uh because yes they're high school students you know we might have this pocket of kids in grades 9 through 12 who don't do as well as we want uh but those students have a 8 to 11 year history as students and there's a lot that's going on there and we want to learn what what has been their trajectory starting in elementary school all the way up through high school and there different factors both within and outside of our control that we can learn about um you know I think this work is importance not only to help the kids but as a matter of process um because this is the kind of stuff that we should be doing um taking a really hard look um at our numbers trying to see okay what's our greatest issue and then doing a a deep dive into that to figure out what some of the best Solutions might be so that is our School Improvement plan for this year does are I'm happy to answer any questions that you may have thank you questions jul one question on goal four just because I have a have a 10th grader um what are the opportunities for 10th and 11th graders under that goal because you talked about ninth graders and seniors so 10th grade is often the Forgotten grade in high school their treat is they get mcast lovely to be a sophomore and a lot of them don't even get their license anymore as sophomore so it's not a fun grade um I'm not really sure what to say about sophomores um you know they're still pretty young um 11th grade though I think is an area where I would like to extend internship opportunities to students there first of all they tend to have their licenses and transportation is a reality of of participating in some type of internship um but also it's when kids are starting the college process and I think that if a kid can engage in a meaningful internship during 11th grade they have a story to tell you know as they start to apply to college or whatever postsecondary opportunity they may pursue because not everybody's going to college um but somebody is taking a look at who you are they're not just going to hire you or welcome you into the military unless unless they know something about you um so thinking about how to include 11th graders in this is important I know it's not easy because they have less flexibility with their schedule it's also thought of as the big Academic Year so why disrupt it but the same time it's an opportunity for a kid to I think learn a little bit about themselves and what they might want to do and that's something that you know we want to pursue the big the blocker for a lot of internship stuff you know is our schedule just you know we don't always have a block during first period G block at the end of the day that's sort of a structural thing it's also AP classes it's tough to miss a bunch of those classes and be ready for the test so there's some practical considerations there but we definitely want to consider extending this to 11th grade thank you other questions um is I'm not sure and it's actually interesting that you just brought it up again was the schedule I had a note for um just I noticed both you and Dr bu talked about some especially the mtss stuff but you just brought it up again about the internships about um I'm not really even sure what the question is just the the challenges of the schedule in terms of um making these goals a reality that that you're having to do a lot of work around the schedule um I guess maybe there's not a question there it was just something I was sort of noticing that I I see that as a challenge and I wondering if you're seeing it as a real challenge um I think it is that's a you kind of you work around that kind of stuff um I think that you know our our students don't like to miss class um that's just how they're a lot of them are wired and you know that working with them around that I think you know is is something that might help get more kids to an internship at the same time I don't want to force kids like everybody as a senior has to do an internship I like that's not helpful I don't think because you're going to force some kids who don't want to do it uh to do you know participate in an internship Pro program um the the issue of the schedule I think you can largely work around that I think it has more has to do with you know the kids maybe not wanting to miss class or not take you know a class that're really interested in you know so there's that that tension there that you have to work through with students on an individual level yeah no s just an observation about I know I can see that it's a challenge um at both the middle and high school to yeah y um I have a question about goal three the Mastery learn Mastery learning record pilot um we do something similar at Salem State um but in our case it's actually built into specific courses my concern of running a pilot that isn't built into a specific course is these kids are already crazy busy and if you add on this extra pilot outside of their actual course responsibilities then you may get a lot of negative feedback not because it isn't a worthwhile activity but because they feel that they're doing this activity and they're just doing it to do it they not getting any credit for it or anything like that yeah no that's probably one reason why we're doing a pilot is to to have a small number of kids so that we can collect that data you know without having everybody do this and just being a mad house um and you know there is some benefit for the student here you know kid kids who are participating in the pilot this would be a community service type of thing because they're they're doing this they're helping us figure something out but also they're able to send that off to a college and like so here's you know there is benefit for them in that yes there is some extra work uh for them but it's something that they can also do over the summertime too it's an online platform so it's you know it's not like you have to be in school in class doing it and a lot of it too what I like about the Mastery learning record and the way they've set it up is that it's not only tied to school stuff like a kid can sit there and reflect on how they're a good communicator by the 8 Mill million other things they're doing in their lives besides school you know and so it's I think it's a cool way for kids to talk about who they are but it's also a nice tool for developing self-awareness uh which is I think a really important thing for students to have no I 100% agree thank you anybody have anything else thank you very much thank you yeah thank you oh sorry thank right we'll bring up our elementary principles we have Caroline shadok win principal Ben sherston the buer principal and our new uh newest member of the administrative staff behind M Shak Jennifer hunt she's the new Cutler principal this year I think this might be the first time everybody meets her welcome to the fire no I'm Kidd I'm kidding good evening I'm Carolyn sh act principal at the winthrip school um all three elementary schools have aligned all of our uh goals this year so we're each going to address one of them and I'm going to start with our uh first goal which is a continuation of our mtss literacy goal from last year um by the end of the 2026 school year the Hamilton Wenham Regional School District will strengthen the multi-tiered systems of support mtss model across all all elementary school schools targeting learning outcomes in literacy the goal is the same but what has changed this year is the a are the action steps um and they are they are slight shifts from action steps that we've had in the past as you know we are or hopefully know we are in our third year of um using CK as our core tier one instructional um materials in at grades K through five we've had great outcomes from using this material and teachers are now in the mode of really understanding the program and we're this year we're able to do those little responding to student needs um while we are still implementing with as close to Fidelity as we possibly can but the teachers now know what they're doing and can really um make some adjustments where necessary so the action steps that have changed this year are that um we we are implementing grade level K to3 intervention blocks into the master schedule to support tier 2 interventions the adjustment was that last year we had solid intervention blocks K to five this year we have shifted because our Lac our literacy interventions are going to focus mostly in K 3 this year we do have intervention blocks in grades four to five but it's two days a week two days for grade four and F for grade four and two days for grade five those interventions times generally align um but the literacy intervention from the um Lac is supporting K to3 last year literacy intervention did not support the kindergarteners it was the teachers and the lit and the um kindergarten uh teaching assistants who supported it so we've shifted that support down to kindergarten this year um We are continuing to do literacy benchmarks three times a year using early bird as our kindergarten Benchmark screeners and then we're using Dibbles for grades three to five we are doing those assessments three times a year and those are really informing the students that we are identifying who need additional tier 2 supports uh we continue to adjust and um Target our professional development plans to align to our mtss needs um at the school and the school and District goals and meeting our teachers license requirements some of the things that we've already done this year uh is to provide some PD for uh grades 3 to five teachers around spelling interventions what fluency and vocabulary work looks like in the upper grades uh we are implementing a new uh literacy intervention tool kindergarten well it's really first grade through third grade kindergarten has the option to use it called youly which is University of Florida literacy Intervention Program it's a widely regarded Intervention Program that is going to be easy to implement but it's going to be really targeted towards student needs so the K the um teachers got some professional development around using this new resource um as far as defining roles and responsibilities for classroom teachers and other support staff in for in-class tier 2 interventions during the identified blocks um that really relates to in kindergarten we will have the kindergarten teachers the kindergarten teaching assistants or esps as well as esps in the kindergarten intervention blocks and everybody will have a defined role and they will know exactly which students they're working with and what they're work what they're targeting with those students in grades 1 through three it's going to be the kindergarten teachers as well as the um literacy support and uh everybody's going to know which students they're working with and what the um targeted goals are for those students in intervie ventions I should mention and I know that um Dr best was referring to it as an intervention and enrichment block and I just want to be clear that for those students that need enrichment that's the time that those students are getting their enrichment also um we are um as I mentioned we're strengthening our literacy mtss model by refining the instructional resources so I mentioned that we are now using youly as a primary uh intervention tool that the teachers that have to deliver the interventions um that's the tool that they're using the Lac Lac is still using the hill for literacy model um for their interventions and then we are continuing to review tier one instruction and student progress in our PLC meetings last year we called them data meetings we wanted to sort of shift the idea that we're not just it's not always data Focus but we want to look at how students are doing in the classroom where we're triangulating the Assessments in as well as how students are doing on classroom assessments and also looking at some of our instructional materials and giving teachers some time to look deeply at those things so we're expanding our use of those Wednesday morning data meetings to make sure that we're meeting the needs of all students and helping the teachers um understand the instructional materials that they're using so that's T goal number one any questions or do you want to do all three goals and then ask all questions no we can do we can do questions one at a time questions anyone all right thank you you thanks all right good evening I'm Jennifer hunt um the new principal at the Cutler Elementary School very happy to be here um so our goal two is similar to our goal one however is focused on our math implementation and also our MTS system that again the cycle of mtss um began in 2023 I believe and we're just continuing it through to 2026 and tweaking our goals as we go along the way to adapt and adjust everything to support teachers and students um so by the end of 2026 school year the H Hamilton Wenham Regional School District will strengthen the multi-tiered system of supports model across all elementary schools targeting learning outcomes and math this year we are implementing a new math curriculum it's called Eureka math squared and this was vetted by our math curriculum team last year along with other math curriculum um and it was also piloted by some of our teachers in the different elementary schools and it was almost unanimously chosen to be the math curriculum of choice um I will say that having used Eureka math squared in previous districts it is truly um a great math curriculum and it really focuses on developing um higher level mathematical thinking um developing strategies so children are learning a variety of different strategies to um problem solve it is also very good in terms of differentiating for our diverse Learners um this year we have already begun in the summer training um professional development for all of our teachers our principles and our instructional coaches and that is something that is going to con continue throughout the school year and into next year we um actually wrote a grant with Jennifer Clifford through um desie to support um the implementation of this of this math curriculum so we have been meeting with them and we will be doing some in some walkthroughs in the building and meeting with teachers and seeing sort of targeted areas of support uh let's see and also just something to say uh we are fortunate in this District to have our instructional coaches so along with our instructional coaches principles are meeting with teachers on a regular B regular basis not just in our um PLC meetings but weekly to kind of look at where we can be of support to teachers whether it be unpacking one of the modules or if it might be modeling a lesson co- teing it's been a lot it's been a great experience to have the opportunity to work alongside the instructional coach um so again we're we're training for coaches and principles to support implementing the new curriculum and going into that mtss model of looking at tier 2 instruction so Eureka math squared actually has lots of opportunities for a variety of Assessments not just paper assessments but there are a variety of digital assessments one of which is actually a pre-assessment and it's called equip and what that actually does it acts like a diagnostic tool um for assessing students and it gives you the information it gives teachers and principles and coaches the information that you would need looking at specific students who need support in specific skills and then it actually gives you the materials and the activities and the instruction to do that tier two intervention and again on the other side of that the enrichment component is also something that um Eureka Math looks at um let's see and we actually two of the elementary schools this year do are going to have Title One um support so that's just another level of intervention once we have that up and running we will have that support to kind of um go into those those times during the day that we are looking to do intervention and what else was I going to say ukr squared okay and the review of tier one instruction is an ongoing process we are together working as principles to make sure that that tier one instruction is of a higher um leverage and that students are meeting Pro making meeting benchmarks and making progress in the tier one instruction we do meet weekly with our plc's and that is the professional Learning Community like Carolyn said it's not just data teams but we meet every six weeks either with um whatever grade level but also focusing on uh literacy but also math and we do a lot of focus discussions around again unpacking modules looking at materials that are needed looking to see where teachers might need support from the principles or the coaches in a variety of different areas and I do again think that is something that is going very well so I'm happy to answer any questions thank you questions all right thank you much thank you thank you Jen good evening everyone uh my name is Ben sherson I'm the principal of fer Elementary um and I want to talk about our third goal um the goal the goal here is around supporting the connection between the responsive classroom core values and the identified District core values um last year the elementary schools adopted the new District core values uh passion for learning belonging inclusivity curiosity Partnerships and integrity while they are great values it is not very kid-friendly language um and it was hard it didn't really fit with where the kids were um developmentally um so we have talked with um super Tracy and among the elementary schools I'm going back to uh the responsive classroom Care's core values of cooperation assertiveness responsibility empathy and self-control um and this was similar to what Brian was saying at the high school level um around the high school competencies and making sure that it's within the language that the students can really understand um in terms of what this looks like and what we're planning to do with that this year year um we've already begun to work with staff and students to get this kicked off um we will create a car's core values crosswalk um to really sort of help um folks understand how how the the the car's core values lead into the district ones um and this will be helpful for adults but also um allow us to lead into some conversations with our fourth and fifth graders um as we get ready to send them on and start to use more sophisticated language uh around core values um as we're expanding this we are uh documenting and using schoolwide expectations um this is really helpful for the adults in the room um Eric uses the phrase all means all my version of that is everybody's kids are everybody's kids um and with those defined expectations it means that any adult in the building is in a position to support uh students and the and expectations anywhere in the building um also looking to catalog some books and some particular lesson formats lesson plans um that can support those core values the other piece that we're really thinking about is the specialist teachers um art music PE and Library um we share them um so it needs this needs to be a consistent um work across three schools Specialists see kids for 50 minutes a week um so we they don't really have the opportunity or the time to really push these core values the only way it works for them is if it can happen schoolwide if it can happen in the classroom and then they can pick it up and run with it um yeah yeah so they um they don't have the time to teach that but making sure they have um that language and that support as well um we have some folks who did some specifically uh specialist training um last year with with with responsive classroom um and our two new Librarians are doing that training shortly as well um and really what this is going to do is bring some consistency um and some child-friendly core value language to all three schools and really Set uh our students up for some more sophisticated language um with the district core values and then we G through the middle and high school thank you you guys have any question questions I actually just had a i i maybe I just missed it I what tell me what the crosswalk document what does that mean so sure you said it I just yeah know so what that looks at is um what are the looks at the the four or the five core values of cares um cooperation assertiveness responsibility empathy self-control and then how do those five how do the um Behavior and the qualities of those five lead into the six core values that the district has identified so really making that connection concrete is that so is that a document that's primarily for educators as opposed to like the poster that is yeah primarily for educators but also when we think about our fourth and fifth graders and getting ready to send them up to the middle school being able to have that conversation around these are the this is the language we've been using this is the language Dr best will be using next year and this is how how these are all connected thank you okay um Ben is there a specific um test instrument for testing whether a student has a passion for learning I mean it's one of our core values but how you know going through from the time they start all the way through to high school graduation how do you keep track of whether we've helped that or killed it in I got to think about that one that's a good question R how do we how do how do we assess our core values I don't know I don't know the answer to that question um I know that with um with the five core values and defining th what those look like across the different areas in the school um we can see where we're seeing success and where we're not um with those um but in terms of the larger District core values um that would be really interesting to to explore how do we um how do we define success with those yeah it'd be interesting if there there must be an instrument out there somewhere but I I have no idea yeah okay thank you Jon um this not a question for you so much okay um but something that I thought of when you were talking um I love the fact that the elementary schools are still keeping Dei and social emotional learning as part of their goals that's great it makes me happy I'm a little concerned that the Middle School school and high school it seems to have fallen off the back burner um there are wonderful academic goals at the middle school and high school but we're missing the Dei and social emotional learning goals at those levels and don't think that's something we can allow to slip that's just me I would agree and I my question was actually where does the deib fit into cares into empathy um um empathy um see my question was where I don't see it in the elementary goals I see I see it in empathy but that's me uh it's a part of empathy it's it's a part of responsibility um it's part of assess well yeah that makes sense that makes sense but I agree with you like I said my concern is it's falling off the radar at the upper levels and I think if anything you need more of that at the upper levels when kids start to get a little meaner and a little clicker well I just just because it's not in the Improvement goals for the year doesn't mean that it's falling off the you know off the cliff it it's part of the everyday curriculum at this point um you know so some of this stuff I you know keep seeing year and again and I understand you know there's more that you want to do with it but some parts of that I'd like to see move to the everyday you know and have new initiatives come on so I you know I think it's work that everyone here I've heard heard countless times you know is stuff that they're always looking into so it doesn't necessarily worry me that it's not on their goal for the for this year and meaning that it's going to be put put to the Wayside if you know I think if something if trouble arose this year and some key things happened I I would imagine that we would see it on next year's goals because they were found a place that they were lacking a little I think back a little bit to the elementary goals from last year where the buer third goal was different ours was around fa um and the Cutler and wi goals were around some stuff and that didn't mean that they weren't doing fact fluency um I know that they were it didn't mean that I wasn't doing but it was just what are we what are we coming back and Reporting on um at the end of the year and yet today's Point there's a lot going on that is not in these three goals can I sure yeah I think I think it's important to note thank you for saying what you said daveid I think the the bigger piece is we build this stuff in all the time if you talk to Kristen Lazaro at the high school you know middle school she's constantly working with people and groups of kids around um the castle system and uh the middle school work related to Executive functioning is part of theal program where they're specifically helping kids to better understand themselves how they function and then the way the tools they can use so they're they're definitely still there they don't go away for us um especially with all of the the diverse um the diversity within our student body when you start to look at the needs of different levels of kids different subgroups that that are that are specifically outlined and then you have each principal saying all right I'm going to come up with three maybe four goals but there you know it's like my goals I'm going to present tonight there's probably 25 other things that are going on kind of behind the scenes I don't think it's dropped do you want to jump in there I notic very quick I know we we've taken a lot of your time it is embedded in in the middle and high school and I can't speak for Brian but um in the Middle School our work on the ELA curriculum one of the really um strong guiding uh components of selecting a curriculum was the deib lens so for example the curriculum that we selected goes out of its way to provide multiple representations student Choice student voice and you know so students are really seeing themselves in the curriculum unlike they have ever done it before so absolutely not going away that's an example happy to give more does that help a little okay perfect so maybe seeing all the goals through a a lens like a dib lens yeah yeah Dr best won't have to speak for me either so I think Jen you bring up a good point um you know social emotional Learning Happens uh every day all the time we don't explicitly call it that um however it's it it does happen um you know we're helping adolescence develop um and you have to have pauses with them often to you know remind them of you know what exactly we're doing here you know Zach talked about um the books that they read you know we we have I think a pretty good representation um you know from grades 9 through 12 um you know different cultures um challenges that uh kids are going to face and that people will just face throughout life um but also when you walk into a classroom in the high school it's pretty rare to see kids sitting in rows doing things by themselves you know I think um the most prevalent mode of instruction really um is in the group setting in order to work effectively in a group you are constantly putting your social emotional learning skills to practice um you know so there are a number of ways that we do this also with our you know grade nine and 10 Health and Wellness curriculum project Adventure stuff um that's definitely a huge push there uh but again you know because high school kids don't just take classes they participate in a a billion different activities you know you you think of all the social emotional learning that a kid goes through if they are involved in a sport um you know the ups and downs and the good things and the bad things that happen in a single contest um you know they need to learn how to keep their minds about them uh to remember that they're part of a a bigger hole and so they're they're getting chances to practice those kinds of things what what I would say is that there may be space um certainly over time to call some of these skills out specifically um but still keep keep them embedded in the curriculum and the experiences that we already have um because a lot of that work is being done thank you thank you okay any other questions right thank you thank you all for um those very helpful presentations and for your time this evening thank you yeah thank you to the principls and the staff for the work they've been doing the there's an incredible amount of work going on just outside of these goals in our schools every single day new curriculum implementation looking at all different types of Assessments trying to find the best learning paths for our kids and and the the different um opportunities that we create for kids don't just appear our our teachers and our principles and our coaches are all working together to to make that happen um in in Co kind of in more cohesive fashion that this kind of we targeted three years ago once we started mtss so thank you to all of you and all of your staffs thank you thanks okay um next up uh we have a discussion um I'm going to turn it over to uh Amy to talk about some Visual Communications and brand thanks thank you um so over at the end of the summer we at our Workshop discuss some ideas for our Visual Communications Improvement um so I just have an update we talked about um it seemed that the committee came to a consensus about an option for a new logo and a type treatment and the ask was for me to investigate different color choices um so I have some more options for everybody to look at and I just wanted to hold discussion and potentially come up with decision making so that we can start to create assets for um especially the athletic fields project is in need of signage and things like that that would be affected by these decisions so I can walk through the deck and then we can have a discussion um so just restating the goal our new visual communication system will reflect the values and goals of the district unify and clarify our Communications and express the quality of our district beep um so this is just restating what I just said what we went over in August um we gravitated towards the second option I showed the crest there's pictures later um the ask tonight is toward finalizing next so this is the version that the committee seemed to gravitate toward um this is two versions that used on different applications on what the needs are sometimes with letter head it's good to have a different orientation I believe the next slide is an explanation of the design choices um four stars to represent our four star that we use currently um in some signage and some athletic uniforms um oh I have to update the slide six Stripes one for each tenant of of portrait of a learner The Shield shape is traditionally used in school branding it signifies stability protection and safety and then the friendly type face for the HW bounces out the traditional crust shape to be from the unapproachable um so this is the colorway that I originally presented but there's some options coming up I just left this slide in to show the secondary usage so there's a version of the logo that can be used smaller that we can pair with the names of the other of all the different schools in the district this was the previous color option that I brought to the workshop at the end of the summer some of the feedback was that it was a little bit flat um and not enough options for some of our other activities Beyond academics and Athletics so I brought two other color options and it's going to be really hard to see them beautifully on this projector so if you have access on your own laptop um to look at the exhibit I would encourage you to also do that but this first option wow that looks so bad on the projection um looks better much better on your own screen so this one introduces um a green color the real color is like I named it a deep teal um the navy blue is a darker version than the one we currently use now um and then I balanc it out with a silver color which I believe we use now but this is a blue silver color um kep to the cream color I feel like it's a really warm and Rich color for education and then I added this bright green accent color which I think might be interesting for both Athletics and um other activities I have some mockups at the end that show it in use and this is a cooler color set this one is a warmer color set so these colors again they look terrible on the projector um this has sort of a more a little bit of a brighter warmer clay green a brick color um an orange and a soft yellow color and then a silver gray that's not that does not have a blue tone so these both of these when I chose these palettes have academics in mind and Athletics and um art activities and we have so many clubs especially at the high school he was reading through them all trying to get inspired to pull colors that um different groups could use so the rest um the typography I didn't get any feedback on as far as wanting to see changes um I'll just reinstate the logo and a universal type face can be the one on the left the Libra Franklin all of these are are free Google fonts so these would be really easy to implement in anything anyone in the district needs to create um I know the district already uses Le the one in the middle it has fantastic legibility and then the one on the right this monospace type Bas um it has a nice flexibility for a wide range of clubs and teams so here are just some mockups so you can kind of feel what these are like in use um I'm not proposing to redesign the website or anything like that these would be simple like CSS changes for color and type face so just I tried to grab examples of things that we see weekly memos email templates um if you keep going I think I've mocked up a couple so this is the old color way of the banner the next two slides I believe have examples of what the new colorways might look and feel like so this a little more energy A Little More updated the next one has the second color way as an example um we saw the next next couple of slides are things that we've looked at already a couple more down are some examples of what some signage might look like in the athletic realm um and then here again is an update with the new colorways and then I have a slide for thinking of our students and you know trying to bring things uh into a more trendy color like using that bright green color I think would be really fun for our clubs and activities so um the ask is to get more feedback and hopefully start to get Buy in so that we can create assets for I know there's some needs like I was saying for the athletic field specifically um answer any questions and have a discussion around potentially um bringing in some volunteers to help build out some of the assets that we need I like the I like the last palette that's all I'm G to say you like which one the one with the with the green color yeah I like that one that one if you're asking us for feedback that's the one know which one do you like with the orange or the other one the Navy and the orange and the mhm uh new color option two yes I think it's great I think it's clean I think it's modern I think it's reflective of you know where we're going and I think it's easy to read it's easy to look at I mean it's just very easy to see that you know HW and we were talking at the retreat about the star and how when I wear anything with the star on it people think I'm in law enforcement and Eric was saying that also nothing wrong with the star but um I think it's supposed to be nautical right it's like a yeah a nautical thing it's not supposed to be na na what the heck is it supposed to be it's a nautical because it oh the general right okay well not going to we're not getting rid of anything that has been before no we're just introducing something new I think that's also very important and I think that we are you know what I mean like we're we're just modernizing actually think it's the wrong direction I so I walk into you know five 00 F feet down the street and everything I see is black and orange when I'm walking into Beverly I go I go which is super ugly I go another mile down the street and everything is Navy and teal when I'm in peid right and we're introducing more of a color palette here rather than reinforcing the Navy and white that is the generals right that's that's sort of the inherent problem we have can I ask a question because that was sort of a question that I had and and I might that was maybe and to you I was wondering about that because yes like when it says secondary colors like like I thought that was fun at the end because teams and and clubs and things are going to do that anyway right so that it would be that I thought that was fun but in general like the signage and things like that Navy and white well that was going to be my question is that is like the signage like I think you have one with the I'm looking at the one that says yeah like the memorial football like the sign I assume that we would the signage would be primarily the the blue and white is that correct it's a great question Eric do you mind going back up to the color palettes um a little further just like the squares of color without oh yeah so for all of these the reason why the dark navy blue color has a bigger rectangle is to show that we would want the majority of our assets to have the dark navy blue as the primary color the other pieces would we should have some flexibility for other student groups especially within the brand to use other colors but overwhelmingly the dark navy blue will be featured so I guess that and just like in general I guess this is just a general design question like is the way it would does the way it normally works that like if I'm going to make something like a whatever water new water bottle and I say well I'm going to use then I would if I want to have an accent color I would pick one of these EXA is the is just right that's the idea and and typically when you build out a brand guide you can say you know you will use this color 75% of the time or in all assets at least 50% will be dark navy blue and then you can use one or two secondary colors I know in my banner examples I use more than one or two but um we can definitely get we can put rules around what gets used and when for sure well I mean at the towards the the end is slide with like the bag and the sweatshirt or whatever yep those are North ring colors right the green in the yellow right why would you ever want anyone in Hamilton one them to not have something that was not Navy based cuz I think and the idea I think isn't that you're looking at secondary colors I think you're looking at tertiary colors the best example I have for this I think I might have said it before is looking at the Seattle Seahawks right the Seahawks actually had a um pretty similar color tone to we did was a Navy a silver uh with a white tertiary and then um way back back in the 70s and 80s they Eye Inside the um Seahawk itself on the helmet started having this bright green to it and in the early 2000s or so when they got new ownership they actually started taking that green that tertiary color which is that crazy green wild color that they've now pulled out there which they do for like their um color Rush games and things like that right and so but everything about Seattle Seahawk branding is based around that Navy and silver um you know primary um pallet so I totally hear where you're coming from I think maybe I didn't explain this specific slide very well like I see these assets or these materials like an iPhone case or a tote bag these aren't necessarily advertising the district but rather items that students can be proud of and have ownership over I I feel like one thing that gets a little bit lost with our current branding and offering is like everything feels very athletic and I would love for some of the other like the Arts group music group Etc to have some offer offerings that are like differentiate them a little bit that's just an idea I'm happy I'm totally open to hearing thoughts about how to work this you know I I I'll go back to sort of this this saying that i' I've found myself saying more and more more recently is is that you know you make rules to break rules or you make a plan to break a plan right and and you know when I coming up with a excuse me you know football practice earlier I come up with a game plan on what the time is going to be and how I'm going to spend those two hours of football now the reality is when I'm in practice we find that we have something else that we have that we're working on that's not quite clicking right right so now instead of 15 minutes on offensive uh plays I now run to 20 minutes right so I have the plan to break the plan I think right now we need to make the plan we don't need to be thinking about breaking the plan I think what the the what we're really lacking in hamiltonm is this clear set of guide lines to have everybody be able to then find themselves within there right I I don't think that we already start thinking about ways that we can sort of um spin it for different people I think we give give them a a strong foundation on what the design element is for the district right so they actually have some sort of sense of Pride some sense of ownership in it right where they actually know again I will go back to three two and a half years ago sitting at a um meeting when I was running again for reelection and someone who grew up in this town quoted that they grew you know grew up here they had so much pride for the blue and silver right the fact that that you know it's so uncommon to even know that we're Navy and white District right it's not with silver it's not I have a clarifying question sorry to interrupt but I'm a little confused because the feedback to revisit the maroon and the cream was from you but are you saying you just want to not have any other yeah when I meant revisit I meant like cuz we talked to last year and you specifically talked about like what if we add like a NE like a neon green color for athletics no I actually suggested it um like a um C okay so but are you saying that you think that the district needs to are you saying that the district needs to just to not have any secondary colors I think the for no no no no no I actually think that having a uh a tertiary color is very important right I think that so I guess I don't I have no I wait I have no graphic design background so I don't even know what you're talking about when you're no I I know that tertiary I understand that tertiary means third but what I'm but what I'm not understanding is you're saying I think the most important thing going on right now I don't know what you're saying is the lack of like Central yeah we're gonna always have blue and white like a lack of just a central database on where to get common graphics common colors isn't that what we're doing that's what's coming next isn't that what's so this is but so I'm again saying we're looking at the basics right but David you can't make a style guide until everyone says yes this is what we want then I can roll out a style guide I can't make a style guide this is not the style guide this is just suggest I understand is I actually didn't because I'm not a graphic designer but I know now after conversations that this is not a style guide It's just presenting options and then we can ideas yeah so I I guess I'm maybe I misunderstood the direction at our Workshop over the summer I thought we were like whittling down ideas that's why I came tonight and said I would love approval or not so then I can go forward and build out a style guide this is not meant to be a style guide right well so I guess I came up out of that meeting with a different idea of you know saying oh I love the shield Direction um but it's the same Shield it wasn't developed out anymore right and I think I actually mentioned there the fact that the um six stripes for the tenants of the portrait of The Graduate right the portrait of The Graduate changes so like actually having that as the basis of our foundation of our you know primary Mark doesn't necessarily you know hold hold up over time you know um but I did I I do love the idea of The Shield itself right I also you know think that I'm looking at a different screen but just the fact that it's um you know it's quite then it looks like an outline to me as well um it doesn't look finished um you know so was it really when I thought we were leaving there is saying oh I like the direction we're going that we're taking the first step not that this was the um the ending point I thought beginning so just as a parent because I I literally just went through my daughter's closet last weekend she has at least seven navy blue and white sweatshirts yes to the point that they had sweatshirts this year on sale for junior class I'm like I'm not buying you another Navy and white sweatshirt right this gives them options while still maintaining like uh cohesive theme so we don't end up with blue and white and pink and white and you know they're different shades of blue and green right if you if you rest that right like but then you go to an assembly or you go to a sporting event or you go to a concert in they're all a navy and the or everybody's all in white right and you actually look like a unified team as opposed to or you know Community as opposed to going in I'm in the you know orange sweatshirt I'm in the Navy sweatshirt I'm in another sweatshirt right you're not well tell them they'll tell them what to wear I don't even I don't see the problem like if if you're at a concert they'll tell you what to wear if you're wearing uniform they'll tell you what to wear but if you are out and about in the community can't you just wear whatever you want to wear I feel like we're getting really hung up on apparel and I want that's true we are getting very I want to be sure I want to be clear that you know if you walk around in any of our buildings if you get Communications from our dist I mean this was really the the origin of this project was about Communications and Clarity um if you get something in the mail from the district all of that will be Navy and white and so I think that my goal with introducing some other color options is more around like the last slide reflects like takeaways for the students to own I don't think there's going to be a mistake about what our colors are for our sports team and for our letterhead our everything else is going to be very uniform and that those are things that definitely I agree with you like we'll live in a style guide and have rules around but I just I don't know I I'm not I won't like die on this hill like I'm fine with removing it if it's well I I always think accent colors they're not it's they're just like ones we could maybe use I I don't see them as like we're certainly not going to make the athletic fields like bright green you know like we're going to always do the Navy and white that presentation right there is not accent colors the banner is not sort of showing neither of the shields above it you could say I'm sorry neither of the shields above it well you could find a use for those what if it lived with you know with the drama club if they wanted to use green instead of Navy so can I just I I want to just move along no no no I actually want to sort of just move over here just too quickly because Julie just mentioned the athletic fields which are a real project I imagine I know I don't know all the details but I know that there is lots of signage that that will need yes and now occur and my concern or my like I'm concerned about timing like that's coming right up and we have I like I don't want to I I don't I certainly don't want to well we have to make decisions soon right when when do we need to make signage decisions Eric very soon within the next 60 days yeah okay um because and to be designed and obviously so I guess again I feel very out of my league in these conversations but I guess what I'm looking at is that part is not a secondary or tertiary color all of that would be in the Navy and white correct what do you mean the signage the signage at the athletic facilities like we and we could know like anything perent on that so we could even put the style guide right absolutely letterhead signage this this this business cards permanent fixtures nav and white yeah we we could actually stipulate probably maybe when and where on an occasion yep a tertiary slse secondary color could be used right it interesting to to get a a couple of examples like Northeastern or what I I know the one in MIT quite well and they they definitely wouldn't um add in colors in the core they might have a separate logo even for a program but they'd preserve the the the core branding identity right so you look at my first presentation when I asked the committee if this is something you would like me to take undertake there I do have examples of different School District um style guides and a couple other examples so it it does exist but like I'm focused on I want to be able to have this so that we can make some assets for the projects that are coming up so I guess I'm a little what we need to decide I guess as a committee is like who has ownership and how do we just pick something and move forward I right and I guess what I was finish trying to finish my thought there was that there's two aspects there's the color I'm thinking about the the sort of big project that's right before us the colors but there's also the design right like in other words we have to decide like it's easy enough to say all that should be in the Navy and and and white but we need to decide are we going with this or not because that needs to get decided the secondary colors and I'm still not fully understanding why I'm why you want me to say tertiary instead I don't think because I don't think they're secondary colors I think the Navy's the primary I think the Whit's the secondary and I think anything else should only be considered a tertiary because then when you add it to signage or whatever you're denoting a particular area you're denoting a particular action right that you would only use no I appreciate that that's appreciate the clarity so I guess to me the first thing I would want to know is like are we moving forward with this this design Crest design scheme and then that being the one in the Middle top right and there's there's go because there's kind of a couple different things like it's or are we I don't think you have a couple different wait is it the other way it's no keep going keep going there's like because at a size there's lose the um Fidelity of the lines that is a key TST of any logo is complete sced well a lot of logos do this so they'll make a logo and then a logo Mark and it's I mean it's so it would be these two plus the one that has just the H Dub with with the four stars on the Y um the like the little ones yeah um I guess well I don't know I'll stop talking you I I guess I just don't I'm not really sure what to do next like I just want to reinstate too I said this in our summer workshop this is not like precious to me I'm happy to do this work I'm like giving me feedback and saying like no scrap this we have to start over does not hurt my feelings so I just want to make sure everybody feels free to like give real feedback so that we can move forward and get this finished um but I'm I'm a little stuck on what to do and ask for next yeah this is so like subjective you know this is very like what do we like what do we not like I mean I like the HW with the Stars on the other side but some people might like this well I mean I guess well go ahead I'm just to say you you really need to Define all of the use cases particularly the smallest so that you can actually visualize what what we did that so it's in here so yeah I have a mockup of like a visitor pass at an elementary school and that's a great example where you'd have that Mark where you wouldn't there it is go back SC down to a pen so yeah it could fit on a pen right so and and I I guess and I'm I'm sorry to keep jumping in but I guess what I'm trying to say is we need to say like yes if we if we said if we said yes this is what we want to do then all of those things that you're talking about and you're asking like those would be all the things that would be the deliver rals we'd be saying okay now we need a whole design style guide and design that everybody knows that it's scalable and this like that we'd be saying take this and make that but what I'm saying is a little different is that you you you need to define the largest and the smallest right and make sure and at least my preference is a design that scales all the way so we do it now like we have this HW and the sheriff's badge that we use now that's different from our full like the logo that has theil this is very common practice I like it I think the one thing to remember too is you know use the field as an example because that's our newest largest project the three colors that I use are blue white and silver depending well it's actually a gray because you can't really get silver but the um color palette there is is pretty specific to what we've used for at least longer than I've been here but it uh it just kind of turned out like okay the Press Box is going to be like an off gray the writing is going to be blue the the uh I forget what the stand front color is but I think it's navy blue trash barrel colors all those things are um specific to the the current color scheme of blue silver and white you know the the one dilemma you have is the main field has that logo on it it says instead of Hamilton one and Regional High School it says home of the generals you know so that's that's the one kind of difference if you suddenly made the shift it's it's I think something we have to look at TimeWise too so I I I'm gonna um in the past few days or whatever past week I um Amy had mentioned excuse me um the possibility there's been some people in the community that have um come up and sort of volunteered to help out with this project as well and I was trying to have a a bit of a conversation with Amy offline about some of this um just some thoughts and and just saying that like I understand the gravity of the project and um you know willingness to help out um on my end and that there's some other people in town that are willing to help out um and try and sort of develop this out and one of the things that I had actually sort of said in that right not even realizing that it was on the agenda for tonight is that a lot of this conversation and discussion um is almost better off behind Clos doors oh uh like uh not like behind closed door but like you know um we're sitting here talking about secondary and tertiary colors and and all of this whereas like um you know like I I I express some stuff to Amy and you know it's always really tough when you're emailing and St too just saying that like you know it's like not contentious but you know here's sort of what I was thinking in maybe having a few um experts in the room to just help out flush some of this stuff out to then present out a more um you know more complete looking package would would be the better way to go um you know because again then You' never know who's sort of listening to this meeting at home and then completely misunderstanding the conversation that's going on um I thought that's what the the conversation was in our Workshop excuse me I thought that's the conversation we had during the workshop oh again I really in I thought that was the the beginning like I I'm really you know I I I thought that David again I think we walked away from that with two very different with two different thought processes clearly um clearly there was but I guess I'm I'm not really my phone I'm not clear on what I don't know how to ask this but I'm not clear on what is your concern that the public might think we saying because we're really just talking about a logo I don't know what you're in that but that's also part of the problem because there are people in this town who are very passionate about this like very and you might not hear it but I do right and the idea of having a design or what's that in design that think that again like this whole you know oh heard you're getting rid of the Jerry mascot I heard you're trying to do to be explicit for any person that is watching we are not we are specifically not talking about Jerry the general did everyone hear me we are not Jerry the general is our mascot this is a logo that goes on like signage in the top of letter head that we're talking about well it it goes a lot more than that right and I think that's also but that's being ignored I just I want to ask a really direct question we had this whole discussion I'm just frustrated at The Retreat so I feel like we're like going in circles I I have no I I don't I just don't and it doesn't matter we can move on but I just I feel like you're trying to say something about what members of the public might be thinking and I just I am not understanding ing what you think that they might think we saying because what I'm saying is here's a potential logo yeah and I'm saying that's saying that they're going to see this and say we're changing the colors of the district well they need to look at the rest of the presentation well they're gonna say a lot of things yeah I don't really know what to say David can you talk into the mic we can quick technical question that the you know the some of the difficult use cases uh like the difference in um the printing technology so if you're going to do screen printing the those very fine lines for example might not be fine lines so it makes me lean towards wanting to push back a little bit on the design to make sure that the reproduction Technologies for each of the use cases doesn't deteriorate the the design it's a great question so so that would be part of the buildout so I typically you would create a second version for a use case that has to do with something like screen printing which you're right you need to address a thicker line and that would be um part of the goal is to create kits for like our boosters and Friends of groups so that they could have access to those files so what you would do is just account for that and have like a special version of the file for a use case like that I think what's happening is we're getting so into the weave I don't even like understand what's going on so we just need to know unfortunately I guess I don't actually know what is needed from us that's what I'm asking is does anyone have a proposal on what they would like to do to move forward you propose like a subcommittee excuse me do you propose like a subcommittee to discuss no I don't want it to be a subcommittee what do you want yeah that's I guess I what would you're moving forward I don't necessarily have a solution I'm just looking well I mean this is a professional project that we're sort of having done sure on a voluntary basis right and and it's not respecting the size of the project and it's not respecting Amy's time and effort that's sort of going in here what I you know don't want is the fact that it's sort of being done by Amy you know on a volunteer basis to just be agreeable right off the in in with everything I don't think this is developed to the point where if we were hiring an outside agency I would be happy with it so what would you propose as the next step that I've said that I think that so you want to start over what's that you want to start over with the design I don't need to start over so what are the next steps that you're proposing having other people come in and take their shot at a version of of this no I think that you should there should be a couple more heads in the room to try and flush this out but that's not a subcommittee like I just I like spell it out for me what do you want what's that like I really genuinely don't like she just asked you if it was a subcommittee and you said no but I what what what should it be what are you proposing a subcommittee would be well I guess maybe it would be a subcommittee but I don't think it' be a subcommittee of members of this committee but what is what is that committee doing is my question so you say flush out to me that means create assets based on a style guide this I know this is not a style guide my ask tonight is can we approve this logo and approve a set of colors so that I can create signage for the athletic fields project if you're talking about revisiting the logo are you talking about bringing in other people to design a version of a logo yes I think it needs to be flushed out board what yeah but we we would have to pay for that the logo and the color scheme needs to be developed further than the first logo that was given to us and then not developed any further so you want other iterations of this logo yes I would like it flushed out okay see okay but see I just totally disagree I love the logos so then where do we go from here and I feel I mean I'm just being honest we're we're being honest right like he he you know what this is actually interesting it's like we are working together on a project and if a consultant comes with a draft some people think it should be reiterated and some people are very happy with it so I'm not I don't know the solution but I don't know where we go from here don't don't feel badly I've spent 50 years or so uh involved in logo fights in little oh I spent so much time in branding fights and I'm sure Dave has two and Amy has two yeah and I still don't have the solution branding fight well it's not it's not a fight I wouldn't say it's a fight it's just a difference of opinion it's a difference of opin which is totally fine I guess I I am I'm just still trying to clarify the ask and the next steps it's like Mom and Dad both telling you different things sort of so I guess and I'm feeling at this point now like there's I feel like I have made a mistake which I didn't realize so I just need to know what the committee wants to do and I sort of feel like I need to recuse myself I don't think you made a mistake at all but okay so um I guess I mean I'd be happy to collaborate if okay if that's helpful but i' you i' I want to be respectful we're looking we're looking for guide well I don't H I don't I don't I really genuinely don't I don't have I I am I am very concerned and it seems like maybe other people are not about the time frame and that may just be that that's what happens is that maybe we're not able to get this done in a time frame that allows us to have new signage on the athletic fields like I I don't know I I still and David I I don't mean to be contentious with you because I am 100% accepting of your I I very much value your opinion about the logo itself what I'm feeling stressed about is not really understanding what it looks like moving forward like I hear you saying that you want other people in the room to take this logo as a sort of a Direction but take it and make it different in some way and and I'm just not quite clear on what that looks like are these people from the community how do I identify them who does that work is that like how like what is it that you want for a committee I'm not quite clear on that if if you were one of my clients right I would never come into the room with an existing option and then a single option right what I'm saying is there was only one option given and there was a lot of things that so there were two options given was the rework of the original yep and this option okay and and I but that's Looking Backward what I'm asking you is like how do we look what are you because I'm I who I am I have admitted a thousand times I have no design background whatsoever so for me I'm looking to the group like and and Trust the group in terms of design options but I'm struggling with process options like I hear you saying that you're not loving the design which I and what I don't understand is like are you saying we form a committee with three people and like how do we get that like because and other people chime in if you have a Way Forward because I don't have one like I don't have a process and I'm finding it like hard to get process from anyone I think what he's referring to is what I've certainly seen done multiple times before is the designer would come in with multiple treatments maybe a half a dozen treatments of the idea of the design correct then but and then that are we proposing that we pay someone to do that well so I necessarily unless un much and a marketing director in how in town it's a lot yeah what I said we've had owner of an ad agency and an owner uh I mean in a marketing director in reach out and volunteer their time and helping out with this project that's I'm totally open and fine with that I just think it needs to be a very clear process and we're under the gun now with a timeline so I guess I have the same question I also I just feel a little insulted for Amy that's what I feel I I'm personally just want to get the project done I know I just I honestly feel like we talked about all of this at the workshop and I I don't understand said anything different no I know but it wasn't clear that we wanted more options it wasn't clear at to me it wasn't clear at all I didn't get a sense of any dissatisfaction at the workshop I mean I can actually tell you that when I were talking about the the slaber of how I don't like the thinness of the W or the rounded round I did right which means further develop no it doesn't so I am going to just ask cuz I I truly I and I I really pride myself on working really hard to create processes in order to make decisions and sometimes I actually create decision trees to try to work it out and I don't have one right now and so what I'm going to ask the committee is everybody maybe take a breath take 15 seconds and if anyone has a motion that they'd like to make I think we need to fall back on our Roberts rules because I we're we I I we had a discussion I need some structure here to move forward so take a breath if anyone can give me a motion I'd love to hear it I move that we table the discussion I just I want other the committee other committee members here like Jen and Trent I I just feel like this is too important okay so there was a mo motion to table table the discussion I don't want to I don't want to kill it table second so the motion on the table is is whether or not to table is their discussion my discussion would be I appreciate the thought because it would be more helpful to have more voices in the room but I'm very concerned about the timeline okay other discussion around tabling uh I I will I will say as a member I um I don't I don't think this is the right thing to table I sometimes people are not here and that's just the way it is are um other people do you have any other discussion around tabling well the side discussion is really if if Amy doesn't if you don't feel from bandwidth point of view that you've got the time to do multiple treatment then I think the only option is to get a designer a professional designer to or he's a professional designer thank you yeah another I know what you mean I know me I didn't mean so there's also no way to do that in time though I don't think to to like ask ask a per another person to volunteer get the treatments have us look at the treatments in time to get the signage that's the challenge and I'm like challenging my own motion it's fine there are there are two people that have volunteered but like what's the turn around yeah right I don't I don't I can't answer that but there there are two Volunteers in theuns at Le to do a logo I don't I mean it's probably a month like six months to do a logo but depends on the scale of the project so I just I just want to chime in for one second and just remind everybody the original timeline for this process was to show what I showed in August in June so that I would have time to do more work over the summer and Implement and the idea was to have our style guide by now so that we could start rolling for the athletic fields project um that didn't work out so I did have two options for our meeting at the end of the summer um I do agree that normal process might dictate more versioning um so I just wanted to remind the committee of that as far as my suggestions for next steps are if if the committee feels strongly that we want more options it sounds like on this end of the table that might be the case I totally respect that and if we can have those folks do that work in that short amount of time I'm totally fine with it like I said this is not like a precious thing to me that's going to hurt my feelings I just want to make sure we have what we need a time to make signage for the athletic fields project within 60 days and the 60 days is when they probably be is that installation Eric or is that no no that's really having designs ready because then it's as you and I talked about we have to pick the materials and get that stuff ordered and it has to be installed we have we have between now and probably early June at the latest to get everything done because the the project will be mostly finished as we get into June okay it'll be landscaping and things going on for the next two months after that okay um so just to be clear we have a motion right now which is the motion to table does anyone have anything else to say about that no okay so the motion is to table this discussion for a future date all those in favor but it's your motion that's okay she doesn't have to vote for it all those opposed okay so that is think that's ever happened before zero in favor and five oppose and the motion fails okay does anyone else have any kind of AEM motion can I ask a question I mean we can't do this forever but we can do it for a while go ah is there a sense from these community members who have volunteered their time about their bandwidth and ability to do what David's ask is I'm sorry I missed that like are they will those community members have time to do a project like this within this timeline uh I think part of the feedback that I've got is that they are worried about the timeline that's why they're volunteering I'm uncomfortable that these conversations happened when me not being looped in excuse me I'm uncomfortable that these conversations happen it's clear other conversations have happened without my knowledge conversation what do you mean but the on what do you mean by that what does that mean so well we were just talked about that there was a material materials discussion well of course there are there's materials that need to be put in understand but it was a discussion that wasn't brought this is not your project what's that this isn't your project this the committee voted that I would work on this project right okay I didn't know you were angry with me about this David this is I'm not a huge surprise I I'm it's not a personal attack anyy okay but my question stands like can this so one of the coaches that I uh volunteer with in him with six days a week great is a marketing director right for a large firm in Boston and has brought up that he uh one of the parents of a um eighth grader I'm sorry a seventh grader that I coach owns an agency and they had been speaking offline everywhere I go I deal with Hamilton and branding right like all every everywhere I go like in the the you know Sports Community which you're I understand you guys are saying it's more than that but it's very much Forefront on their mind this project is about Communications at its at its heart we're talking a lot about Athletics right now because that's the first big prodject but it's much more than Athletics I mean I understand that but I mean I also know where my Bread's buttered when it okay I would I would like to make a motion just to end this conversation I move that and you know what go either way I move that we move forward with the presentation as presented and that doesn't you know creating a style guide based on the presentation as presented and then we can vote on the style guide does that make sense is that a motion that makes sense do we have a second second okay I think if we don't vote we're not going to get anywhere okay um you guys are this is really I I'm really struggling on how to just move forward okay um discussion I'm not sure what that means does that mean un unchanged I vote that we move forward with the presentation so that Amy can create a style guide which we can then review and vote on so the motion is not instantaneously turn Hamilton whenham into neon green that's not the motion it is let's move forward with what we discussed at the workshop and you can disagree or or not well I wasn't there so disagree with anything there um no no I'm just saying I just want us to move forward from this discussion I don't see any other way to move forward okay I and a style guide would be created I mean in other words there are decisions that need to be made here on the colors and other things but a style guide would be created based on the current the the current there could be a motion that we bring in other people but my motion which one my motion is that we move forward as presented without other people being involved and there could be another motion where we want other people involved but this one this with this logo scheme as the right is that what you're saying yes this as her present her presentation has presented just to move forward the next step go to the next step M so okay I so I guess what is that what would that so then what would you then what would be brought before us to be voted on then it would be a whole complete style guide I coming into this meeting tonight my thinking was it would be a style guide that gives Direction on how to implement this logo with the color the sweet of colors that we decided upon tonight um so bring a style guide with how to use those items throughout all of our needs in the district and have everybody approve it so that we can start building assets okay and when we were emailing David about getting help I thought you meant to actually build out PowerPoint templates banners um like all of the uses throughout the district that I that Eric and I made a list of when we kicked off this project last year because that is definitely something that I could use help with um but I'm understanding now it's more about just this revisiting this no I think it it could be both if this is the way the committee wants to go then I'm sure you know everyone that volunteered to help will volunteer to help make the assets um okay um were we were we going to vote on this tonight or were we were just going to discuss it I was asking if we could vote on it so that we could make some moves towards having assets to work with but there is a motion on the table so I don't know if we want to yeah no there is a motion on the table I'm sorry I'm actually no I'm actually struggling very much with whether or not I have questions about the motion that's on the table because I there needs to be more discussion well I I I mean I'll I'll just be honest which is that I am while I'm not afraid of taking difficult votes I am concerned about the level of sort of disagreement I I I think it's important and I I guess my thought had been I guess what I didn't understand was I thought had been what I thought that would be like a conversation about like yes just like we said at the workshop we're happy in general with this but I have a concern about you know something that would be like a like that's what I imagined this conversation being and I sort of imagined that then it might be the kind of thing like okay and I I literally have no I can't even make something up but like that somebody said like I you know in general but I was wondering if you could you know know whatever shift something slightly and that it might be the kind of thing where we decided on tertiary colors secondary colors and then we then you then the style God was created with a little tweak of some sort and it doesn't feel like that's the direction we're going and it feels a little bit uncomfortable to say like now we're locked in I guess I I am want I very I want to be respectful to people's concerns I am not feeling like that it's necessarily better to have sort of I know they're not I know they're known to you but they're unknown to me whoever the people are that you're talking about like it feels a little bit like okay well how like how am I know that like it feels a little weird to me to say like let's throw it to a new person like I know you know them but but I don't and so that feels a little bit odd to me um I'm not comfortable I don't know whether that was what you were proposing but I'm not comfortable make paying someone to do it because we me personally I'm not ready to I don't know that that's what you were saying earlier I I mean if if if it been my task to do this on my own I'm not a designer but I have go-to designers that I that have developed logos and all kinds of other designs for me so I I would tend to go to them right but to to be to be clear I'm not saying that you should no no no but to be to be clear Amy is a designer and the committee did vote to task her to do this but she's told us that she has limited bandwidth that's that's the sticking point if she was full-time designer on this project she could potentially develop the the other treatments or the other versions of the logo to choose from and and I that she said that our timeline is wildly out of what she proposed we're just off schedule like if if if we had a discussion like this at the beginning of the summer I would have had you know I'm a teacher so I'm off in the summer from my regular job so I would have had more time if I got that feedback at the beginning of the summer to visit a whole bunch of other options um sorry I couldn't no no no that's fine um I I don't know I feel like I keep telling that I keep saying that over and over so I just I just want to move forward so but I guess to to David's point do you feel like you do have the bandwidth or you don't have the bandwidth to create the next step which is the style go so oh I can create a style guide from this I don't have the bandwidth to come up with a bunch of a bunch more options for the logo okay refin so yeah okay I could refine the logo I wasn't aware that it was necessary so um if we're wanting to like would that make you happy D what's that if she' just refined the logo not not multiple different logos but refined this design I like I I think it's um you know uh my my personal opinion is I think it's too large of a project to be done single-handedly the logo design itself the logo design the color scheme right I think that that doesn't answer David's question excuse me that doesn't answer his question I I'm sorry how can I answer it more fully helpful information much earlier in the process no he I but the thing is my my every that I'm saying has been consistent since June no we didn't we didn't review this in June we reviewed it in August no we didn't review this in June for the same reasons I'm bringing up that it's that you were afraid that people would be worried about Jerry what's that that you were afraid people would worry about Jerry and that it's a very difficult thing to do in a public forum okay how do we move forward what do you propose moving forward so we're it's very difficult to do in a public forum because we've been talking about it an hour we're also in the middle of a like there's been a motion right so right I'm gonna vote against the motion I didn't hear what you said I'm going to vote against the motion okay what do you want to repeat the motion I'm lost I think I think the motion is to accept or proove this direction the the direction that is presented here Julia help me if I'm getting it right yeah just to move the direction to task Amy with moving from this direction to a style guide to present to us at a f is that correct yes which to be my question is what happens if the motion fails that's that was my point of discussion and my line of questioning well it sounds to me and I and David please please no no no please I really I really tell me if I'm putting words into your mouth but it sounds to me like if the motion if that motion were to fail it sounds to me like you might you're trying to propose creating some kind of a group to create this a new logo idea is a very good start it needs to be refined more and developed more I think there needs to be more than one representation an option given on what the shield looks like what the slab serif type face looks like right and and as I said over the summer I think I love the idea of a shield I love and I think it's very close however it is the heart and soul of this District so and it needs to be given the respect so a minute so a minute ago you gave one treatment so a minute ago David you know you did a minute ago David okay a minute ago David Frankle asked you whether what you were looking for was for this logo to be adjusted and I know really am not really clear if that's what you that's what you're looking for or not yeah I don't think it's complete yet okay so so and it sounds to me like what you're looking for what nothing where where there's five people in the room right we can move forward and I could be outvoted I understand that I I'll be completely honest with you I have I want this to feel collaborative and that's why I'm trying to get input from you I'm not afraid of taking split votes we've taken plenty of them but I think you are right in the sense that this should feel collaborative um and I you've expressed that you're not happy with it but I'm feeling like I'm not able to get clarity from you on how you really want to move forward you want someone else to be involved correct I so I I honestly think that there should be more than one person involved in project of this skin why didn't you say that last year when we decided to take it to do it this feels like the last minute to bring that up so it's really not I mean and and I have actually expressed all along you know I shouldn't have even said that what is the plan going forward that's it like how do we move forward I don't want to discuss this anymore this is silly well I mean you know you're you're sitting here putting it on me that we're sitting here in late October and not happy with this right or or at a sticking point at a sticking point in October right and you know this discussion happened last spring excuse me so now the heightened timeline doesn't fall on me because the discussions happened when they fell within the agenda you wanted to move it from June to August okay okay okay okay I'm sorry sorry I the motion on the table I think everyone knows what it is is it would it would and it would come back to us one more time it would be a style guide would come back to us if the motion were to pass correct I just want to make sure I understand no changes to the logo just moving forward with this current Direction with the style guide to be presented to the full Comm can I bring up the fact that we didn't make any decision on the secondary tertiary colors no I can't bring that up I can address the feedback I was given about the yes okay that's sort of like what we do when we vote on Eric schs we give him feedback he brings it back brings it back okay well yeah I think the issue at hand is Amy having the band that there's Amy having the bandwidth to do more iterations of a logo and color schemes and all of that M and then the other piece is do we want to bring a third party in how does that work what does that look like who is this person okay those are things that I do not want I will be very clear I don't want either of those things that's why I brought this motion everyone else can want those things and that is completely their opinion I don't I I think Amy did a fantastic job and I I think I just don't I don't know I don't how else to express it that's why I created the motion so actually I will stop talking because I said my I said my piece if there's another option then you know we can present it but I I didn't see another like solid because the option of Amy creating new logos is not an option because she doesn't have the time so it's either a third party which we have to figure out how to get that done or we move forward that's how I see it and you know um I'm gonna throw an extra wrench in to the mix right now I actually have to go um so oh I'm sorry um so I'm sorry and you know I'll do whatever needs to happen okay do you want to vote before you go sure but you know where my vote is so it doesn't matter it should be on the record if you want to is on the record don't we need you that for that the executive session what's that I can't I have to to go he he has to go I understand that that's no I I respect that you have to go um okay um um It's Tricky I hope everything's okay all right so I'm really struggling and I'm sorry I don't want to put you in this position I just no it's my job this is my job but I am really struggling I am going to say one more thing which is and I really was going to say it even before he left I am very concerned that the conversation that just occurred in this room which I respect and all of us are allowed but I am very concerned that once this kind of a conversation occurs that we have created controversy that I am fearful turns what I didn't see as controversial into suddenly controversial and I am concerned about that which is part of the reason I was trying so hard to move towards some consensus because I I don't know that's just a fear I have is it helpful to table and have more votes no I don't I think we've already established we voted no on tbling so we did finally vote on that revisit um all right I'm sorry that was my own trauma all right so the motion on the table is to move forward with this do we even technically have a quorum we do okay good good all right all those in favor nobody else is in favor I just want to say I'm for the record um did you vote Yes I did oh one in favor all those opposed two opposed any exstension one exstension um so so I'm happy to work with David to figure out next steps if the committee is amenable to that because I just want to get it done it's important I don't want to miss deadlines I don't want to work with old assets that no so I this is I so we're finished with that motion and what I'm no no no and what I I think this no this is what I want people to say what's next I heard you saying you I that was very painful to me I came in for this um intending to vote for this I have no problems with this I think it looks good I like all of it my no vote represented that I think that we by having this public conversation have tainted this that was the reason that I voted no um I wonder whether working col if you are willing whether either working collaboratively with David and perhaps the member of the public this could return to us I don't know alternatively I would understand if you were more likely to just say let's you know we can move forward I do feel like we need and it's already 9:15 I feel like we need to have some Direction so whether that direction is um to give someone the authority to move this along um I I don't want to leave here with nothing that's what I don't want to leave here with this has been excruciating yeah and I don't want to leave here with nothing I'd like to move on with next steps um and Next Step you talking about David Pito I take I'm not really talking about yes he yes whatever it is I'm not really talking I'm me personally I'm would like the committee to give some ideas about like I kind of heard willingness to say let's take this General scheme and get a little more information and come back is that I don't want to give Amy's design to somebody else to work on like that seems really wrong to me though it's okay that's what I meant when I said I know but that seems incredibly WR it's fine it's not wrong and it can happen in practice it's totally fine I just um I'll just offer that I'm I'm comfortable working with David to move on so whatever that means yeah he has some concrete ideas clearly about what requirements he's looking for I don't in particular so I don't know what they are so so maybe that's just maybe offline that's the more comfortable discussion I don't know with the try I think can I jump in here yeah please please someone help no I think Amy's already been assigned Amy and I were assigned to kind of continue this out of the communications polic um plan that we put together and we've gotten to this point and you're at you know this hour represents I think what will happen in the community if you move forward too quickly so I think part of that conversation is saying okay he and I will continue the conversation pull Dave in and and that will give us some time to figure out who these people are and what they do and come back yeah with with more information I think the Limited in lack of information is causing the problem everybody's like who is this I don't know who is this I don't know so knowing these people getting to an idea of what can be done may be helpful for the whole process that I mean that's thank you for articulating Kath because that's sort of what I'm saying is I think we need to have and and I do think this committee would need I think Eric just what Eric proposed basically would be a continuation of what we've already actually voted on which was um so maybe we wouldn't need to vote again or we can vote again to have if and again that is if Amy you are willing to continue working with I like the idea of working with Eric that would allow you to bring in any member that you chose of the committee David PLO David Frankle y like Julie I like that idea ask me but as I've established I have no graphic designer you know but you have sometimes it's good to have a Viewpoint from someone that isn't a designer it is good no I again but what I'm saying is I I and I and I guess what I'm looking for is to wrap this up I'm looking for a motion that maybe says something along the lines of what Eric said which would look something like we would just move to approve Amy to continue her work with Eric pulling in others as needed to come back as soon as possible with some further work on this pitch trying I think that's the that's the sticking point fur what does further work mean well I think we can figure that's that's the main sticking point for me that I did not understand what further work meant okay I'm going to try to make a motion we will determine it together let's have I'm make a motion I wasn't going to because I I want to be a little AB stainy but I'm going to make a hope out I move that the committee authorized Amy myself and Eric to move forward on this project and work offline with other interested parties David pedo and unnamed members of the community to bring back a refined or multiple refined versions of this at a future meeting for the full committee to vote on do we have a second second okay any discussion no um the only thing I would discuss and say is that just be cautious about um not creating um open meeting law violations so make sure that like you can talk with one member of the committee but not several members of the committee and just sure I guess in what I yeah so if I were to get like your input it would be separate and there are even ways I mean in other words people could private input go through me everything could go through Eric so it's not that the committee members couldn't give input it's just that you don't want to be having serial conversations and I'm always happy to receive input via email correct and you can send it to Eric he can forward it to me or okay yeah all right is there any other discussion no NOP oh my gosh all right those in favor and that is unanimous of the four members present and the motion passes I'm really sorry that one please don't apologize apologize thank you for your work thank you for your work thank you okay I am I I'm also not going to apologize let's just move on okay thank you for your time um next up is the superintendent goals if you all recall we discussed them extensively already yes so we're just voting I'm hoping we'll start this off before we say anything with a motion you a motion to table yeah no to be honest what what this you miss wait oh no no we're not we not a motion to table is there a second okay I move that we accept the superintendent's goals for the school year 2024 to 2025 second okay uh so and second by Amy Kum all right um so does anyone have any questions or discussion regarding the 24 25 goals that's thought you were joking sorry don't no because I mean I would prefer that all the members are there for that so and I will I well I know this is this is really about the motion to table but I just want to make it clear and I said it earlier like I I hear it we struggle sometimes with attendance and we can't keep holding things until everybody here like I yeah like it would be nice if everyone's to vote the only one is the budget that we have to kind of because we need a majority these goals have been on two agendas everyone's had plenty of opportunity to talk with Eric that that's why I feel comfortable voting and not tbling just because we've all seen it and had a chance to discuss it but I totally respect and understand why you no no I yes in an Ideal World I agree but anyway the motion we're actually in the and it has also been on I mean I understand family emergencies have happen but it's been on the agenda for yeah well it was on another agenda where we discussed it also um okay any discussion about the goals questions comments no thank you for taking into account our feedback from of course from the last time thank you for the feedback all right uh looks like we are ready to [Music] vote um all those in favor that is three in favor those opposed one opposed uh so the motion passes um of the members present okay okay um all right next is the mission statement um we had a good discussion about this last time um I Janelle actually did a lot of work and tried to she did it to a te she followed our the motion and and it didn't work grammatically she was like so she caught she was like I tried and so this is my this is full disclosure this is not 100% what we actually voted on what we've actually voted on was to add that top paragraph which is word for word which was David frankl's addition it's still there just word for word but the next line um I that was originally at the top it's a supposed to say we will do this by by but then it it didn't work when you tried to like adjust the tenses you had to adjust like yeah it just didn't work so read it I hope you've all read it all that second part is the way the second like the first paragraph is new and then beginning at the second line there where it says the Hamilton one Regional school committee will lead an Inspire District that from there on has been our previous mission statement all along without changing any tenses y so that's what I did it did not 100% follow what we had said but it didn't change any meaning it was just grammatically didn't work out despite us doing all that work I respect primer so that's good do we need a motion please y I move that the school committee accept the 2024 2025 school committee mission statement second second by Amy is there any discussion all right everybody got a chance to read it oh I I'm struggling to read it actually oh there we go than yeah so again the whole second part is our exactly the same as what we have right now it's just that first line is the new one I like that line yeah the just a nitpick yeah they should have a compound Notifier between High and quality is it where the the first bullet high quality high high quality hyphen hyphen you think yeah it is that that is a compound modifier I'm okay with that yeah it's I said it's nitpicky but it's um uh do you want to make a friendly am amendment to Julia's motion yeah sure yes all all all of the above with the with the addition of a high and between high and quality Okay I accept the friendly Amendment thank you all right are we ready to vote Yes okay yes okay all right all those in favor and that is unanimous of the four members present the motion passes okay um all right Finance do we have anything no no more Finance no fin no we have our meeting scheduled out all right quickly Capital Finance don't ask for we haven't met since the last time but we're meeting next week okay yeah and all the our meetings I think are on that schedule Oh speaking of which where do we get the forms that you referred to the last meeting which forms for submitting to Capital Finance there was a part of your process they they are forthcoming the they are forthcoming yeah the new director is creating them in his own name they were in the previous director's Google Drive okay so he's so we'll send them out we're it is late but I have no idea what we're talking about forms from the yeah the capital Improvement planning process process those forms will be out because we're going to use them during the budget process um all right uh policy policy we needed to reschedule um also it was it was good that we rescheduled because it was not listed so I need to make sure that the next meeting is listed but Weis Jen and Amy and I need to talk about when we're going to meet next okay thank you and thank you for being up on the posting it's important to get y thank you um uh negotiations we are negotiating a Monday Monday Monday um all right and no secretary report uh make sure Eric to the superintendent's report there it is all right quickly the um thing I noticed in our calendar it's coming up really quickly is the end of first quarter I feel like school just started the end of first quarter is next Friday which is amazing and it's also the first day of November which is even more amazing that we're here already um also our nurses hosted a flu clinic for the staff and the students it went very well well yesterday and then we have officially begun the FY 26 budget process so we will start next week be and I have loaded calendars next week to meet with all the budget holders and to try to figure out um just kind of the initial play on on the budget so it's exciting and also a little nerve-wracking at the same time to trying to get all that squeezed in but um we're looking forward to a a good budget process um and just so people are aware we're following the same process same transparencies same meetings with all of the same groups throughout the year and youve already approved that calendar so we're looking forward to continuing our work uh on behalf of the school district in conjunction with the two towns that is all I have thank you thank you questions for Eric okay I have nothing to report um topics for future meetings Communications we'll put that on there yes I was going to say logos no one just joking um else okay um I am don't think we need accept this session we good yeah okay we're turning I think we're yes I think we are not going to have the executive session this evening did you say not oh that's sad I know I really wanted to stay another hour and a half AR if you really wanted to you could speak up if you really want to his mic was turned the other way all night nobody knew what are he was saying well especially the things is do you want any input to what we're going to be doing on Monday from the non okay I don't think we need to yeah no I yeah we're kind of in a funnel now yeah yeah um would you like a motion to a j do I have a second I'd like to move a motion to a second second by Amy all those in favor that's unanimous of the four members present and we are adjourned at 930
