all right good evening everyone we're gonna it's nice to have a bunch of folks at the meeting a lot of our students here tonight so I'll call up uh Dr tgro first warney soy Elementary School talk to us a little bit about what's going on there good evening thank you for inviting me here tonight to highlight some of the happenings at the elementary school it's hard to believe that we are more than halfway through another school year during the first half of the school year students have gone from reading a few pages at a time to reading chapter books they have gone from playing a few notes on a new instrument to playing in a concert they have gone from adding and subtracting to multiplying and dividing these small games that happen every day may feel small at the time but it adds up to some very big reasons to be proud of everything students have done so far this year our clubs andies are in full swing and we just wrapped up our musical theater Academy with an outstanding performance by the participants in Cinderella if the shoe fits stay tuned because they have prepared a little something tonight to perform here all of our after school curricular activities provide a meaningful extension to what students are already doing during the school day we're happy to provide these options to our students who want to take their learning to the next level the benefits of participating in extracurricular clubs and sports are skills these Young Learners can take with them for the rest of their educational career and Beyond participation cultivates leadership enhances teamwork develops time management Fosters confidence and increases academic performance some examples include our third grade kind Kids Academy some of the way ways they spread kindness were delivering treats to faculty and staff on Valentine's Day making posters with positive messages and welcoming students and parents at morning drop off our second grade stem highlights include designing and Engineering working water filters after learning about water pollution and the impact of polluted water creating and testing parachutes and programming Sphero Indie robots which encourages computation thinking in a fun and exciting way our fifth grade stem students were busy with engineering their designs for the many projects that were created they were able to design and build their own 3D corn maze models build traps for catapulting and holding a gingerbread man and creating snowball catapults academically our subject Spotlight tonight is on science science is one of the most loved subjects by our students students they enjoy the investigative learning and Hands-On interactive process our curriculum is aligned with New Jersey state learning standards and focuses on different areas of study each year from investigating effects of rocks tumbling into rivers to exploring different soil types students research discuss and experiment to find answers the lessons are engaging and the topics are of high interest for elementary level students during the month of February West students again participated in the kind heart the kids heart challenge which coincides with national heart month a total of 126 students eagerly participated and registered for the event demonstrating remarkable enthusiasm and support the students collectively raised an impressive sum of 9,324 185 I'm pleased to report that our school was the top fundraiser in Atlanta County for the American Heart Association for the second consecutive year as part of the kids heart challenge activities students actively engaged in various heart pumping initiatives during their physical education classes the event not only promotes physical wellbeing but also Fosters a sense of community among our students emphasizing the value of heart health and compassion my thanks to coach dianis coach dbac and Coach Sone for organizing this annual event the West care closet was established last year through an HF Grant written by teachers Angela cillo and Nicole D fiz to help support our most atrisk students funds from the Grant have provided the initial resources needed to get the care closet up and running but it's the ongoing support from teachers community members and service organizations like Kanas and the Italian Sons and Daughters of America that sustains its operation and allows it to prosper the West care closet is a resource designed to support our students and Families in Need within the school Community stopped with essential items such as hygiene products snacks UNP perishable meals the closet ensures students facing economic hardships have access to resources they need to thrive academically and socially each day students eagerly come down to the closet for snacks ensuring that hunger doesn't hinder their ability to focus and Learn by addressing these basic needs the care closet helps remove barriers to learning and ensures that every child has the opportunity to succeed regardless of their circumstances next I'd like to highlight some very special academic achievements each year our students complete New Jersey state assessment in the spring in short the njsla was designed to assess higher level thinking not simply memorization of facts this assessment can be quite challenging so it's very significant accomplishment to achieve a perfect score we had four students do just that please come up when I call your name first student is Christian Jeff achieved a perfect score next we have Sophia kovak perfect score on the ELA Sy next Raymond Rodriguez Zavala perfect score on the maap ass okay and finally we have Ethan Wilson perfect score on the New Jersey congratulations again on your high achievement read Across America week is always a highly anticipated event at West and ECC the week is filled with special days funfilled lessons our book fair and family reading night family reading night is always always well attended but this year it was reported that over 1,100 students and families attended this can't miss event the book fair provides an excellent opportunity to get books into the hands of our students more importantly as a result of earning Scholastic dollars some were redeemed to make sure every student was able to shop regardless of their financial ability to pay Wes and ECC along with a generous donation from Mr Robert cairy raised over $44,000 during our dollar Drive which will be used to purchase books for students in need over the summer months this year Wes hosted its first in-house youth art month exhibit during family reading night this Art Exhibit included artwork created by each student at West the student artists were so enthusiastic and proud to have their work showcased at such a great event none of this would be possible without the initiative and dedication of Miss Jenifer Britain our M media teacher she takes total responsibility for the book fair setting up the entire library to be filled with books scheduling classes maintaining the fair refilling for the next day calculating sales and breaking down everything post family reading night it is a huge undering which is why I asked her to join me tonight to highlight some milestones and how she instills a love love for reading in all of us hello I'm thrilled to be here talking to you about the Scholastic Book Fair tonight because I know how beneficial this yearly event has been for our students at West in EC the primary goal of this event is to help each of our students build their atome library of books re research is clear about the benefits of growing up in a home where there is access to books we were pleased to have our best year ever at the book fair with $31,000 in sales this year as a school we received about $144,000 in Scholastic dollars as a result of this year's profits we use our funds um to fund multiple things throughout the school year such as online subscriptions that students can access in school or at home for reading and research we welcome new Home Room teachers with a shopping allowance on the Scholastic catalog or at the book fair so they can begin to fill their own classroom libraries throughout the year we're able to make small book purchases for classrooms and host giveaways through the media program we've been able to add new steam materials for maker space days in the library a majority of our profits are used to fill our school's vending machine we have a book vending machine that was purchased with funds awarded To Us by the Hampton Education Foundation every week students who showed effort or Improvement in any area such as Behavior academics or kindness are given a chance to get a brand new book and most importantly we use these profit dollars to make sure that every child is able to shop at the Fair regardless of their financial situation during the book fair we also host a dollar dve fundraiser that helps us get even more books into the hands of our students as you heard this year with the help of a private donation the students at eccn West raised over $4,000 all of this money was used to buy books for our summer shopping event in June over 200 students at West will be able to come shop for new books to read over the summer months ECC will be hosting a similar day as well the students who benefit from this event would most likely have very little or no access access to books during the summer when reading is such a crucial part of writing us for the next grade level I want to thank Dr T and Dr SLE for their continued support of the Scholastic Book Fair there are a lot of moving parts and since we coordinate it with read Across America week everyone is very gracious about all of the scheduling it requires to have both buildings visit the fair during an already busy few weeks I'm grateful for the parent volunteers as well who come in and help our students shop and every staff member who has helped make this event possible year after year thank you now as you can see we have quite a few young ladies and gentlemen here tonight this year the West Theater Academy students presented Cinderella if the shoe fits an all-time favorite fairy tale musical an what okay an amazing cast of 67 students from grades 2 through five sang beautifully acted brilliantly and performed in incredibly for our enthusiastic students and their families here are a few songs from the show that highlight our very talented students we hope you enjoy here's a list of our performers tonight appear consider should [Music] Upon a Time very long ago all the girls in town were busy thank you folks we actually have a letter here from uh the principal and I like to share that with you from the uh middle school for those of you who don't know um these two organizations I think we mentioned last meeting uh have been very generous and uh donated tremendous amount of uh softball and baseball equipment and um Mrs freski wrote a nice little note here on behalf of the Hamilton Middle School we'd like to thank Mr Bob Esau and the all sports booster club Mr Paul Calderone and the Hamilton Blue Diamond for donating softball and baseball equipment to our new inter mural programs we're very fortunate to have such a wonderful organizations in our community that support our schools and programs we thank them for their generosity and support it is our hope that this donation will encourage participation in softball and baseball in the Middle School level which in turn will lead to interest in physical activity and future success at the hamton high school level sincerely Dr Kim ranesi Hamilton Middle School principal and we from the Board of Education would also like to thank you folks for your generosity thank you thank you all right moving on here in the we'll go to Mrs Keo she's I think has two things to cover yes thank you Mr Lions uh for my report this evening I will be providing District information related to the student safety data system and the targeted support and Improvement status for the Hamilton High School projected onto the screen as required the student safety data system information must be reported twice a year to the board of education and to the public school districts are required by Statute to report to the Department of Education any incidents involving violence which includes incidents such as fights assaults or threats alleged or confirmed harassment intimidation bullying vandalism which includes incidents such as trespassing and damage to property weapons and substances which is possession or use of alcohol or drugs schools must also report any other incidents resulting in a half or more of in school suspension this information must report be reported to the Board of Education in a public hearing two times each year for the first reporting period of September 1st through December 31st of 2023 the following information was submitted total violence 21 vandalism three five substances zero weapons and seven hip confirmed we had 3 74 other incidents leading to the removal which is again to a day half a day or more vinal suspension the total reportable um offenses were 35 for the first uh reporting period for the second part of my report on January 31st of 2024 I received notification that Hamilton High School was identified as a school in need of targeted support and Improvement this designation was assigned due to consistently underperforming performing student subgroups of special education Hispanic and economically disadvantaged for two years in a row in the areas of ela and math proficiency four and fiveyear graduation rates and chronic absenteeism additional SI Sia federal funds or School Improvement award funding will be available to the high school to support the implementation of evidence-based interventions to provide targeted assistance to these identified groups the high school will remain in status until one of these identified groups meets their interim targets for two consecutive years thank you all right thank you Mrs keko let's moving right along we'll go to board member reports I'll start to my left report no report no report quick report um the negotiations committee met tonight with the um hamton Education Association we met at 5:00 um committee members for negotiation committee are myself Mrs donio Mrs Mr shipon Mrs Hunter Mr Pia I think that's everybody right and um we met at 5 o'cl we did introductions we also have our um board attorney um M Miss Amy Amy Hal Elco helping us with with negotiations and it was just it was a really wonderful positive just happy to see everyone we signed off on some ground rules and we're going to have a couple of dates um um to get started with actual negotiations so it was a really nice meeting tonight and I want to thank the members of the haa for coming out at 5:00 to do that and we look forward to getting through thanks right Mrs good evening tonight on our agenda we are hiring a middle school social worker a part-time athletic trainer a um part-time instructional Aid and a full-time custodian and a parttime bilingual Aid found number 56 and 74 of the agenda there is also a u Robin had mentioned uh attendance there is a policy uh new and revised for attendance that we are going to apply uh to try and curve the attendance isues and to bring our children in school and stay in school and be TR it um a very nice thing that it's going to be happening there's a middle outreach program where the Atlanta County prosecutor's office is going to be sending a uh police officer to the Middle School to a classroom to uh maintain a rapport with the students to see they will be a conent of what's going on in the classroom the student will be comfortable with them in the classroom observing and just I think it's a good idea so that the students get a positive idea of the police force it's not an SRO it's an outreach program um happy to announce that the graduation assessment re uh requirement has been reached um in September there were a hundred students that did not meet the passing requirements and that was in September well congratulations to the guidance to these teachers we are now every student that took the test passed so we're very proud of that and uh very happy about that I'm going to go off of my uh report for KCK for just a second I want to just mention an on some hero in our school district John you don't know I'm going to do this John's wife adise is um should be recognized she actually performed the hli from Manu and saved a child's life um her first attempt I believe did not work and her second either had a a mint or something lodged in his throat now the irony of this is she was being observed at the time so and she went right on with the observation so I think who has ever observed her should definitely pass there shouldn't be any quals about whether she did a good job I just want to say the Observer didn't want to stay she was so nervous and AD said no sit down you're doing this observation we done let's get every over one day and I'm sure there are other incidences in our schools but I just became aware of this woman and I wanted to mention it and you know kudos to her and uh you know thank you for a great job that's all that I have thank you Mr well that really U hit home yeah yeah wow hard to follow up after that geez what you hero listen no I admire the job she does and the rest of the staff absolutely John didn't know I waser to that thank you all right so for uh buildings and grounds just a few quick things um that we have on the agenda here one of them is we've modernized our Fleet a little bit for maintenance vehicles uh we have purchased three new uh vehicles to add into our Fleet uh as far as the ECC expansion we're still right on schedule give or take I think like a day or so even though we've had some pretty bad weather they're they're still right on schedule uh the roof concrete has been poured we're almost at the 30-day cure time where they'll start putting the uh final finishes on the exterior uh the building will soon be weather tight uh this way they can start doing the fit and finishes on the inside which they have already started the electric HVAC and the fire protection on the inside of the building uh as far as the existing uh EC we did modify the uh PL the existing plan that we had in place just a bit uh and we did that just to get a little better use of uh some of the space so you'll see a little bit of a charge there for a little bit of engineering we had to get done and I think that's uh pretty much all I have for this evening thank you Mr Kya Mr C uh super attending committee did meet again this evening we're scheduling another meeting in the future we're going through the process all right Mrs hunter wanted to thank John Luke and barara for taking the time out to come to our meeting um we appreciate that def working together in collaboration we also want to thank the Hamington middle school for hosting the sixth grade leadership team update our students had a blast at that they really enjoyed the opportunity to meet and work with some of f as well see the scho so they thought that was awesome and our next meeting is 3:20 at 7M thank you Mr ship thank you congratulations to nine of our high school senior athletes as they announced their college decisions to play at the Collegiate level on Monday uh March I'm sorry on March 6th our Hamington Middle School think team came in second out of 14 teams on Saturday February 24th the Middle School Annual Spelling be was held on February 27th with the following winners Olivia Chola sixth grade finished first place Aiden ainon 8ighth grade finished second place Amelia capucho eighth grade finished third place and Olivia chiola also uh went to a sixth grade spelling be in Cinnaminson with uh students from all around South Jersey and finished third place in that as well congratulations to our wrestling team for another great season and to coach moriel who was selected the district 30 Coach of the Year our theater our theater program is on Full display this month with the High School production of The Adams Family on March 14 through the 16th at 700 p.m. in the pack the Middle School production of juny B Jones will be held on March 21st and 22nd at 700 p.m. at the Hamington Middle School uh we did our first annual senior day at the high school with 60 uh spring seniors who were photographed and had um professional poster siiz photos that will be displayed uh this year and we will continue to do that uh for fall and winter uh and also Al Aaron mul who's my neighbor keeps setting records uh at track he he placed at the in the Nationals and he just keeps breaking his own records get I know amazing every day he's breaking record I think he just started you know last couple years running and um and he's getting a lot of scholarship offers so congratulations uh to Aaron mul and that's my report thank you uh nothing to report from my committees but I got an email a few days ago I we all get the emails from different um organizations but it was about a reminder about board docs and it just joged my memory I'm not sure I brought it up last year in previous years um I would love to have us use something like that to organize all of our committee meetings I think in the past I've recommended a Google drive but now board docs has been approved so you don't have to it's a little bit easier to because it's a vendor I believe so it's some did you did you see that John I saw the email come through yeah yeah um so I just want to remind me to bring it up again and hopefully we can investigate either that or another way to just organize all of our committee agendas minutes because I think it would be easier than you know trying to email and say can we have this and everything's in one central location so that we can access it and everybody can see everything can can you look into that for us and just be ready with something next me we can talk about in committee yeah let's get into it I think we should look at that okay perfect Mr Thomas okay um from the finance committee so tonight's our initial introduction of the budget um we have two there's two times where board members get an opportunity to vote on the budget there's the there's the initial introduction and then the budget goes to the county for technical review and then we do final adoption a little bit later there's also a prettyy specific timeline around when those things have to happen the budget that you're being asked to look at tonight and you had all got an email with some detail um is what we call a status quo budget right there is nothing new nothing taken away nothing added in the first draft of the budget between now and our next board meeting uh which will be on the 25th of April uh Robin and the principes and Barbara and their team they'll get together and present the board with some options of things that they feel we need to add in and usually they'll rank order them for us to consider the initial budget as presented does not raise taxes does not lower them it's a zero budget um our state aid figures we got a little over $100,000 more from state aid are rable base meaning houses and new buildings built in Hamilton that raised the tax base went up about 138,000 um on the expense side certainly contractual obligations with the teachers and the other bargain units health care costs and in general inflation uh you know on the on on the expense side of the budget and really increasing but we'll look at what we need to add there'll be a discussion uh the board will all the we get to look at the budget we'll do two Finance committees to talk it through and then the various committees as well there'll be discussion about wish lists and what's going to come so uh that's the situation with the budget right now um I also want to talk a little bit about you heard Dr tgro and it was great to see the kids come out and it's great to hear about our students and how well they're succeeding and all the good and things they're doing but I want to stop and talk a little bit about the care closet um I've said it I say it a lot I I say a lot on purpose there's kids Elementary age students that come to school here that will come to school here tomorrow hungry that don't have enough at home and they get food and they get you know the the staff here provides for them the teachers the AIDS the the secretaries all the people support staff the administrators everybody pitches in and helps kids whether they need something to eat or they need clothes and so every time we talk about these things I I I just I encourage people if you want to help your schools and you want to help kids that's a really great way to help is to just make a donation to the kid to the care Closet in each building uh because there's a lot of kids in this community that are in need and sometimes I think we lose sight of that we're all here for kids but I think the community loses sight of that there's a lot of kids that come to school that need things so I encourage everybody when you can uh to help out the two more quick things for me I'll thank again on behalf of the board and individually Mr cairy for providing a generous donation for the book fair it is always nice to to have the students be able to buy a book even the students that don't have the means to do so uh I've heard this keko and Dr tigro and Dr slay talk about a love of reading inspiring kids to love reading and so having everybody get a chance to put a book in their hand at the book fair is both a good thing in terms of learning to love reading and also a good thing in making sure that everyone comes away with with something um lastly Mr chapon touched on it uh the play opening night is tonight the Adams Family uh please come out that they're doing a great job Mr Coy and I had a chance to stop in and talk to Mrs carel rodeo and her team as well as the students uh a lot of energy in the room with the kids in the play it's really exciting so we're looking forward to that I understand that they're just about sold out for tonight's show it's going on sold out show you better get your tickets yeah better get your tickets you know and I'm really proud we have like a very sophisticated ticket system it's like a b pick your seat you know I like it it's pretty easy to do on the website very very good so looking forward to that but really it's it's really it's great to see the kids do that it's such a valuable life skill to learn to do learn your part and to be part of a team and all those things um so that concludes my report now we'll go to public comment this is the first of two opportunities to be heard just go ahead and step up to the microphone and give us your name and address you can address the board good evening everyone um I just
