arent TR yes Mr Poo Mr short yes Mrs atoro yes Mrs G yes correspondents I have nothing at this time Dr okay then over to you for your superintendent report all right um quite a few things for me to share tonight so I can just bear with me um I want to start just by uh presenting something to Mrs go this evening so last month as for those of you who were here or were watching uh noticed that we recognized Mr rer we brought Mr rer out of retirement to recognize him for his uh 10 years of service uh to this board uh and I am happy to also share and you get two and I'll explain why so I'm happy to sh that tonight we would like to recognize Mrs gof for her 10 years actually more than 10 years like 13 yeah I was going to say but we're going to present her with from the New Jersey school boards Association this Milestone award in gratitude for 10 years of dedication to the children of PA th state county in state of New Jersey so um we're happy to present this award to you or the certificate to you um not just for your time as board president but for your for the last 13 years and the many many contributions uh that you've provided for this school district and for the students of this school district we're also happy to say that M goof is again running for the board for another three years so we're happy to see that she may not be but we are um but I just want to thank you for uh all the time that we've worked together over the last 10 years and everything you've done prior to my time here um for this District so thank you congratulations that's for you all right you get two because the first one that came had a hole in it so thanks to Mr we got your second one we also sent you a broken pen so are these signs maybe they are maybe I should I'm sorry to turned it in thank you you got your one that's well if you I don't know if you noticed the new one that they sent actually said 25 years so I don't but it says 25 years at top so I don't know if this is a foreshadowing commment to a mental ins it's fine maybe it's one of those like oneoff rares like when aint and it's going to be worth money committed to the Looney EV thank you thank you very much for for pursuing us this thank you okay um in regard to my report um I want to start just with referendum I'm happy to say that uh we have completed our final referendum project from our 2019 referendum which was the asbest removal uh in the tunnels at the high school that work was done over the month of July uh the building was completely empty during that time obviously once the work was completed everything was tested air quality test and everything came back clean so the uh the school was back up and running they're working very hard to get it clean cuz now they lost a month of time to begin the cleaning process but the uh the staff at the high school is working very hard to prepare the building for our students for September um so again happy to share about that a lot of referendum projects completed over the last uh you know five years if you want to say it that way but uh a lot of great additions to our district a lot of very very important and much needed upgrades to benefit our students in Hawthorne uh another positive I'd like to share is I am happy to share that we'll be adding another element to our school security platform so as of September 2024 officer Tim Vega will begin working at both lincol middle school and horth high school as the new District school resource officer uh his role as our s SRO will be an important addition to maintaining a safe and positive learning environment uh we welcome The Experience dedication and commitment officer Vega will bring to our schools uh his presence will not only enhance our security security but will provide students and staff with another trusted adult who will work to promote safety encourage positive relationships and forer an atmosphere of mutual respect so as I said we're really happy to have Tim in this role um we I can tell you that he's excited about it we've had numerous meetings uh over the last few weeks uh in fact yesterday uh officer Vega detective Sergeant spone uh detective cumin and Captain King and I met with the administrators at both Lincoln and Har high school just to talk about this new position and the expectations of the new role and I did share with the board uh the guidelines that we came up with together along with the horth police department so uh you know we're excited again about this new addition it's just another positive uh step toward our school security platform um and we're excited to have Tim in the role I think he's going to do a fantastic job I'm really excited about it so so that will be start Tim will be uh he'll be attending our new teacher orientation just to meet all our new staff um I know he is planning to attend back to school nights at both Lincoln and Horn high school as well as some of the early PTO meetings to introduce himself to our uh our school community at both Lincoln and hor high school so again really excited to have him beginning in this new role um another positive thing we're been very busy preparing for our mov to our new board office across the street um as part of our preparations we've gone through numerous files and found some amazing amazing pictures articles scrapbooks School memorabilia CV radios we found a box of files with salaries back to 1959 um so I could tell you we we actually donated a few items to the Historical Society because we found scrapbooks of Articles from the WN press from years and years ago uh so along with some pictures so we did donate and I want to thank Nick Robert from the police department he was our liaison to the Historical Society so he picked up some of the items and brought them to to the Historical Society um we've already moved some items across the street um our final steps are this week uh the fiber will be uh will be connected tomorrow so the office will be down and if you want to say that we won't have any phones or Internet for the next day or so so the fiber will be disconnected here tomorrow connected to our new office and then Thursday the moving truck will be moving our uh uh our office office across the street so hopefully by Friday or definitely by Monday we'll be back up and running and uh you know full swing again so we're excited about that move it's been a lot of hard work I really need to thank Miss Murray uh for I mean she's gone through she's probably sick and tired of going through file cabinets um but you know everybody in our office has worked really hard our our maintenance custodial staff have really helped us out by moving some of the boxes uh we've done some ourselves but there's been a lot of a lot of assistance over the last three or four weeks to prepare for this move this week so thanks every everybody who contributed um okay uh one: one for grade six and N you know one: one distribution grade 69 will take place over the next couple of weeks I want to thank Mr Meed and his technology department uh as well as the building principles for organizing the distribution the schedules will be shared by the school principles to to the students um I know there obviously are our sixth graders will be getting their devices I believe at the end of leadership camp along with their schedules and then there's other dates scheduled uh for the uh ninth graders we'll also be uh deploying some new devices to our uh some of our teachers in the district who have devices but they'll be getting some new ones so a lot of hard work a lot of work goes on over the summer that people don't realize and this is just one piece of it preparing these devices for their use during the year so thanks to our tech department uh practice rol of our full sports teams have begun we're excited to see our teams competing this fall I always enjoy this time of year we get to see some activity back on the fields and in the schools again so it's really really nice to see that I want to wish all of our teams good luck as they embark on this new fall season um and again it's just exciting to see our students excited to be back in the building and and participating in all of our fall sports teams uh Leadership Camp is often running it started on Monday uh I you know great numbers this year they have approximately 140 students signed up this year which is a large number I could tell you last year was only about 108 students now the class was a little bit smaller but to have 140 students uh is fantastic um so you know we're really happy to see that uh things were kicked off on Monday uh we got a chance to uh you know welcome all of our incoming sixth graders on that day and I want to of course thank um mayor mayor Lane and the council I want to thank Chief Neer and Sergeant Doo specifically who organizes Leadership Camp as well as all the members of the horon police department who spend this week with our incoming sixth graders you know as you all know uh the this is such a worthwhile program for our kids it really makes a difference in their transition to Lincoln Middle School um it makes their it definitely reduces their anxiety a little bit and it just gets them acclimated to the school so it's a wonderful program we're very lucky to have it here in Hawthorne and I just want to thank everybody who makes it makes it possible um if you're around tomorrow morning the helicopter is landing on the black top at Lincoln it was supposed to be Monday got the got delay till tomorrow morning so if you're around and you want to swing by that'll be tomorrow morning and then of course the culmination ceremony is Friday afternoon I think I sent you guys the schedule in my weekly report so if you're around and you want to stop by feel free uh you know that will be uh we it's always nice to congratulate the students at the end of leadership camp uh new teacher Orient new teacher orientation is scheduled for August 26th and 27th Dr Jona as always has organized a another great uh two days for our new teachers uh you know we always look forward to officially welcoming our new staff approximately 25 new staff members 25 or so we also have nine student teachers from ripo this year which is great again have another uh pool of student teachers from ripo that we you know as we know we partnered with them last year in their student teaching program so it's it's great to have a little bit of a pipeline of students that uh you know can hopefully transition right into our school so new teacher orientation is August 26 and 27th opening days for our staff are August 28th and 29th and then of course the first day for students is Tuesday September 3rd so look forward to all those upcoming dates coming fast okay and finally um is my obligation to report the student safe student safety data system report so each year districts are required to report on incidents of violence vandalism substance abuse weapons offenses and hivs to their governing body twice annually we have to there's a September to December report which we typically report in in January and then there's a second report from January to June which I'll be reporting on tonight so these are the numbers from the spring of 2024 and I can tell you the numbers are down a little bit which is good news right so in the fall we had about 25 total incidents and in the spring we've had 19 total incidents so six incidents of violence or what consider fights uh no incidents of vandalism uh seven incidents of substance abuse which was down from 15 in the fall so that's good news right we're reducing that number uh we had one weapon a pocket knife uh was found on a student and five confirmed hivs in the spring of 2024 so again those are our numbers 19 total incidents down from 25 and4 um and that concludes my report thank you very thank you I just want to point out something that I think is remarkable about the referendum that it was done during the pandemic almost the entire scope of it was it was vetted and and we voted on it beforehand and the the bids were all done beforehand but the work was done during a pandemic with Supply Chain management issues and cost uphe and not and workers and like it's still amazing to me that it was it really went by I mean a couple of hiccups but that's remarkable and it's a huge Testament to you and those around you who stayed on top of it and but like just to frame it that that whole the whole thing happened because of a during a pandemic we were very fortunate that we had the computers given before the pandemic I mean the timing of it it's it's it really was but it's it's amazing to me that that that all played out throughout a you know a global pandemic um Miss Aaron trout C instruction thank you president pursuant to the recommendation of the superintendent of schools the committee on curriculum and instruction recommends the following resolution C c 1 through ci4 on page three ci5 through ci9 on page 4 CI 20 through CI 25 on page five and CI 26 through CI 38 on page six on behalf of the committee I so move second move by same comment I always have welcome to all the new hires to our district we're excited to have you we we have filled a bunch of roles so welcome to Hawthorne I just want to just comment about p21 you know it's so nice to see that our teachers are continuing to educate themselves right and go back to school to further their education as well I think that's wonderful to see that you know not just it's not just one or two people you see a long list here of people who are who are looking to improve themselves as teachers which benefits our kids right so I I just think it's wonderful and I just want to commend them I know it takes a lot of time takes time away from their families um but I just think it's wonderful to see that that long list so absolutely and this board has been also very supportive under your Administration for making sure that that that we have in the budget a line item that supports them in seeking tuition reimbursement because we know the value that that brings to the district absolutely um just want to ask a question Dro where do we stand with any opening positions at this time we good knock on the wood as far as I know we have I just found out there's one I do have a question Dr spro I know speaking of pandemic dilemmas um transportation was a huge issue for for several years throughout the pandemic but it seems like again that would that we've had success at this point we have all of our rout Sals yeah so these are from the summer as you can see the dates there most of these are from the summer because by the time we bid the routes and we get the contracts it just takes time that we have to provide it but then we wait for the contracts to put on the agenda but again as far as I know for we are in good shape with our routes um so awesome someone was will not be rerunning but we will save our goodbyes for when that time comes um the election will be November 6th I believe um so please get out and vote Miss col Moi Colson is not here to do say County School boards uh Mr Boo have CPAC and PTO I don't have a report tonight thank you uh and Mr toara buildings and grounds all right thank you madam president uh buildings grounds committee did not meet this month but the foll some updates on various projects throughout the district um over at the barricade we put the new carpet uh down uh at the back of the high school railings were installed and over on the side entrance the railing uh is scheduled to be installed this week everything I believe is done at this point now everything all the railings in the front of the building are done and obviously that was around the gas lines in the back of high school as well yes uh at the auditorium Main and gym entrance the steps are repaired new railings and stairs tread were installed uh as Dro said the final referendum project of the aspes removal was done at the high school and is completed for reopening uh at excuse me a new fence was installed around in Linkin generators as well as previously reported we repurposed the windscreen from the horon Avenue side to the generator fence and over at the Boe office the new Fire and burglar arm arms were completed as well as the painting and the network drops which I believe will be done within the next couple of days they're done actually at this point now oh then we drop that's done as well Y and then lastly the uh move to the new Boe office as you spoke about is scheduled uh for this week as well as the fiber connection and that concludes my report thank you Mr Taro at this time public be heard good evening Toby good evening how are you good how are you good I come with handouts this time oh yes it's the uh teacher and me always prepared um so I want just to uh share some uh information I found some of you may know some of this information so if it's uh repetitive I I apologize um but I was doing some research um based on some uh topics that have come up um since I've been uh attending uh the board meetings based on some programs that you already have that I thought uh could help out um the first is a grant it's called the uh n m Loy 21st century Community Learning Centers um it is a yearly Grant I believe five years they just finished uh the first one um it specifically provides opportunities for communities to establish or expand activities uh in Community Learning Centers um and I thought this one would go well with the uh before school um that you're offering for uh the State Testing okay um so I'll pass that around thank you uh the uh next one I know involves everybody's uh favorite topic which is uh finances um and ways to try to bring some uh money into the district um I was at a meeting uh and this came up um it's called the pay County Bank program um it offers municipalities school districts uh and other governmental uh entities um at a uh tax exempt and low uh interest rate and there's a lot of things that could be um financed um it seems very straightforward um which sometimes is too easy to believe um so this has information on it and it also has um uh some more information that and the last one I promise this is not what my home class is like um I know the uh question has come up before about um hiring practices and I know I passed to some of you before uh there's an article in uh njaa review um called The Power of representation uh welcoming male teachers of color into education um and at the end of this article which I thought would be of interest um there's two parts in it um one there are many different organizations at list I know you've talked about um CJ Pride but it also includes um some others and then it also talks about a program uh with r University um which is fairly close um so I'll pass that around um for some summer reading material Thank You Toby that's it for me anybody else okay at this time we will do our comment sandwich from the board members anything you want to say just let J what kind what kind of comment is going to be Mr shway we'll start with you just general uh uh my condolences to the P family and good luck to another great school year thank you Mr Doyle anything on your end uh just general comments uh don't know where the summer went but uh please enjoy the last couple weeks enjoy your labor day and see you in September thank you Mr Doyle Mr just general comments uh a lot of exciting things happening the SRO Leadership Camp which I believe it's Unique to H right um don't let the uh quietness of the meeting uh throw you off there's a lot happening during the summer pto's are organizing uh there's negotiations happening on both ends uh custodians uh maintenance uh central office so there's a lot that happens behind the scenes so thank you to all them that's it it's funny you say that because anybody who's paid summer bills I always found that to be like one of the heftier months of things that's happening so that's one of those weird things if you've never seen the the June the July the August Bill list there's so many things that do happen Mr Taro yes thank you m president uh also like to send my condolences to F family um and regards to the SRO I personally have the privilege of working with officer Vega uh in uh capacity of Coach uh in Rec teams in town and I could have picked a better person myself uh for the position I really am very very happy that uh that is moving forward for the community it's important important aspect that we needed uh and uh in general just uh enjoy the rest of the summer looking forward to the school year and uh I uh definitely a proud father of a daughter in leadership camp right now uh and every night there's nothing more thrilling for me to come home and hear about her day uh it's something that I participated in the graduations due to Mr clo for the last few years who recommended me to go to it and uh it is by far the most satisfying thing for me to go to every year but now having a student myself who's in uh going into LMS it's uh that much more of a privilege so thank you two comments um one wanted to congratulate last meeting I know I mentioned about Ethan Ramos our alumni who participated in the Olympics um he's still the top of the world in as a wrestler he didn't win a medal but it was really exciting to see all the clor pride there were signs around town so congratulations to Ethan we're proud of you I know you're probably not watching this but we're proud of you and as Dr spro mentioned about the teachers that are bettering themselves and that were listed here one of them is here so thank you Miss Bieber for attending I've had the pleasure of coming to your class for three years now I think for for to read in March so congratulations and keep doing such a great job so thank you Mr nothing just thank you all for the support um you know during this drawing time thank you um I would also like to offer my condolences to you and your whole family we are here for you um I personally know what it's like to lose theway um I would like to uh extend my very deep gratitude to the buau for uh the SRO position which the public may not know is being fully funded by the town um we while we had every interest in engaging with them we had not budgeted for that uh and it's not something you can retroactively budget for um but they are they are graciously uh supporting that and fiscally picking up to tab for that so we would like to really offer a deep deep deep gratitude for them to them for that um you know they they understand that it takes a village and that they this is is their Vision as well um I would also like to thank the IT team who helped us out we uh my son had some friends reach out saying that they were trying to I don't know why but reach out to teachers randomly in the middle of the summer um and they were getting bounced back emails but Alex and and Tamer who was away but they did figure out there was some I'm not going to try and explain it but something happened they figured it out and they were able to to solve it within a few days so very grateful to the team for that um I would also like to say that the football team the first scrimmage is next Tuesday I believe at 10:00 a.m. um I will look it up it's in lowy but the first game is September 6 home vers Butler um it is 6 p.m uh yes September 6 6 p.m. at Hawthorne High School field and we do have a scrimmage next week at Loi 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday the 21st um and I would also like to say You Know M to Mr taro's point we sort of live vicariously through a lot of through other people up here because we don't know some of the Milestones until you get there um and now I have a rising senior um and I'm doing a lot of things for for the first time and I just my appreciation for the district and the faculty and the administration and the board deepens the farther I get the closer I get to the Finish Line I he is a he's already applied to colleges he has had such a great experience in this town I mean the classes the classes that we put on the the application he there are 10 blanks you can put in a common app activities he had more than 10 um just the exposure that these children can have should they choose to take advantage whether it be in the classroom on the field or extracurricularly I I mean really you get in what you put you get out what you put in and I I don't think even me being as involved as I am it it gets clearer and clearer the closer they get to graduation because it's just unbelievable the doors that open for them when you put time in so I again want to give my deep gratitude to the whole hawor public school family because he really they have every opportunity in the world if they want it they just have to seek it and and and I do that's the message we continually say um you know you you get out what you put in but it just becomes so clear when you have a student who's approaching that threshold of going out into the world there are so many opportunities I mean AP classes honors classes just so many opportunities for them and I am eternally grateful to the hore family for that um any who our next meeting will be September 17th are we going to choose a SE a location okay so we will let the public know this is our swan song for this this location um it was great to us I we've spent you know I've been up here for almost 13 years is like 12 and a half years at this point uh the space has really been great us but I am looking forward to going back on the road I know that's something that we enjoyed when we were doing it uh grateful for the opportunity um to get have our own space and spread our own Wings speaking of approaching a threshold like I feel like we're graduating a little bit and we're we're we're moving into our own our own space so we will we will publish the location of our next meeting but just so the public knows Toby in particular because I know you like to come to our meetings they will most likely be changing locations monthly so that would be listed on on the website so we will we'll keep the school scho yep so September 17th 7 p.m. and we will keep you up to date on the location um if no one else has anything else to say um be it resolved that we are going into private session uh the HW Board of Education convenes an executive session to discuss exempt matters pertaining to Personnel uh be it further resolved that that is anticipated that executive session will last for 45 minutes in duration and that public action may or may not be taken be it further resolved the minutes of the executive session will be made available upon the determination by the board the disclosure of minutes will not detrimentally affect any right or interest of the board and the need for confidentiality no longer exists I'll entertain a motion to go into private session motion second motion by Mr totaro seconded by Mr Flo any discussion call please Mr Zoro yes Mr Cavo yes Mr Doyle yes M arant trout yes Mr Poo yes Mr short way yes Mrs D yes
