I DID WANT TO SAY I DID WANT TO SAY BEEF 'O' BRADY'S NOT ONLY DOES THIS BUT HAS OTHER SPIRIT NIGHTS AND THINGS LIKE THAT FOR OUR STUDENTS TO SHOWCASE THEIR TALENTS. SO, YOU KNOW, BEEF 'O' BRADY'S DOES A LOT WITH OUR STUDENTS, YOU KNOW, REALLY LIFTING OUR STUDENTS ON THE DAILY IN OUR COMMUNITY. SO I WANT TO THANK SO I WANT TO THANK BEEF 'O' BRADY'S BRADY'S FOR WHAT THEY DO. AND THEY'RE PUBLIC SCHOOL ADVOCATES AS ADVOCATES AS WELL. THANK YOU. OUR NEXT RECOGNITION IS OUR NEXT RECOGNITION IS HILLSBOROUGH HILLSBOROUGH PUBLIC SCHOOLS HARVARD JOLLY HARVARD JOLLY AND HARVARD JOLLY AND BECK, FOR PLANNING AND DESIGN MERIT AWARD IN THE CATEGORY OF INVESTMENT AND COMMISSION FOR NEW SCHOOL, NEW HIGH SCHOOL UUU. >> THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO HIGHLIGHT THIS. IT'S KIND OF UNUSUAL. USUALLY WE GET PLANNING AND DESIGN AWARDS AFTER THE AWARD WAS BUILT. >>Karen Perez: I WAS GOING TO INTRODUCE YOU. GO AHEAD. INTRODUCE YOURSELF. >> WE >> WE APPRECIATE IT. WHEN I'M TALKING -- THEY CAN EMPTY OUT. THAT'S EXACTLY RIGHT. SO AUDIENCE OF THREE. NO, THE PLANNING COMMISSION DOES DESIGN AND PLANNING AWARDS THEY GIVE OUT EVERY YEAR AND THE DISTRICT HAS WON NUMEROUS AWARDS BUT THIS IS THE FIRST ONE WE HAVE WON BEFORE IT WAS BUILT. THEY LOOKED AT THE DESIGN AND IT WAS SO IMPRESSIVE AND WE HAVE FRANKIE HERE FROM HARVARD JOLLY AND LAUREN OTERO THAT WILL TALK AND I'LL LET FRANKIE GIVE A QUICK HIGHLIGHT. THEY LOOK AT VERY KEEN THEY LOOK AT VERY KEEN ITEMS. HOW WAS THIS DESIGNED ESPECIALLY WIMAMA WHERE THEY'RE NOT USED TO HAVING A BUILDING THIS BIG. I'LL LET FRANKIE GIVE A COUPLE -- A MINUTE. TO TALK ABOUT TO TALK ABOUT THE PROJECT. >> AND VAN'S NAME IS >> AND VAN'S NAME IS ON THE AWARD. GOOD EVENING. I'M FRANK I'M FRANK SEPSIC, ARCHITECT WITH HARVARD PBK. I WANT TO THANK SUPERINTENDENT VAN AYRES AND MR. FARKAS FOR HAVING ME HERE TODAY. IT'S AN HONOR TO PRESENT THE FIRST WHAT I FIRST WHAT I FEEL MANY AWARDS THAT THIS SCHOOL WILL WIN FOR THE DISTRICT. COLLECTIVE VISION AND GUIDANCE IS REALLY -- HAS REALLY ADVANCED THE STUDENT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE DISTRICT. SO THE COMMISSIONING AWARD AS CHRIS STATED IS A PLANNING AND DESIGN AWARD FOR MERIT INVESTMENT AND PLANNING CATEGORIES. THIS AWARD IS BASED ON THE MASTER PLANNING EFFORTS OF A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH BETWEEN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, COUNTY AND HOMES AND NOT ONLY BRING, YOU KNOW, SHORT-TERM BOOST TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY BUT A LONG-TERM -- LONG-LASTING IMPACT TO THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY AND STUDENTS IT SERVES. REALLY THIS AWARD IS BASED FOR THE OFF-CAMPUS WORK INCLUDING WIDENING OF ROADS, ADDING PEDESTRIAN WALKS, CREATING BIKE LANES AND MOST IMPORTANTLY UPGRADING THE INFRASTRUCTURE ALONG WEST LAKE DRIVE WITH LAKE ACCESS FOR THE CITY OF ACCESS FOR THE CITY OF WYAMAMA RESIDENTS. OUR DESIGN INITIATES STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND THE SENSE OF COMMUNITY YOU SPOKE OF EARLIER. A COMMUNITY WITHIN THE CAMPUS WAS IMPORTANT. ALLOWING STUDENTS TO STRIVE IN ANY POST-SECONDARY OPPORTUNITIES THEY HAVE. HONESTLY TO WRAP IT UP, I KNOW I HAVE TO BE QUICK BUT HIGH SCHOOL UUU IS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART. WE DESIGNED THE SCHOOL BACK IN 2020 WHEN THE WORLD WAS SHUTTING DOWN. SO WE DEDICATED A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT TO STRIVE AND MAKE SURE THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SCHOOLS. I'M JEALOUS BECAUSE THIS IS A SCHOOL I'D SCHOOL I'D LOVE TO GO TO. I'M TOO OLD TO DO THAT BUT NOT ONLY MYSELF BUT MY COLLEAGUE JOSE GOMEZ WHO IS A RESIDENT THERE TO LIVE AND GROW UP THERE AND CREATE THIS SCHOOL THAT THESE KIDS ARE GOING TO LOVE IS REALLY A GREAT STORY TO TELL. THANKS AGAIN FOR HAVING US BE THE ARCHITECT OF THIS CAMPUS AND I HAVE I HAVE YOUR AWARD. [APPLAUSE] >>Christopher Farkas: GIVE IT TO VAN. THANK YOU. AND AS FRANKIE TALKED ABOUT, THERE IS OTHER OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE AWARDS THAT WILL GO THROUGH ONCE WE COMPLETE DESIGN AND ON A NATIONAL LEVEL. FRANKIE IS THE ARCHITECT BEHIND YORK AND SOME OF THE MORE BEAUTIFUL SCHOOLS WE HAD. WE APPRECIATE HIS PARTNERSHIP ON THAT PART TOO. SO THANK YOU, SO THANK YOU, FRANKIE. THAT'S IT. OH, YEAH. PICTURE. >>Christopher Farkas: ONE MORE. PARTY OF ONE. >>Karen Perez: DO YOU WANT ME TO ANNOUNCE IT? >>Christopher Farkas: I'D LOVE FOR YOU TO. >>Karen Perez: RECOGNITION OF 2023 ENERGY STAR CERTIFIED BUILDINGS. CHRIS FARKAS, DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT OF OPERATIONS WILL BE HIGHLIGHTING THIS RECOGNITION. >>Christopher Farkas: THANK YOU. I'M A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED WE DON'T HAVE PUBLIC COMMENTS BECAUSE AT THIS DAIS YOU GET TO HEAR SOMEONE TALK ABOUT WE BUILD STUPID BUILDINGS AND DON'T CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT AND ALL THE THINGS YOU HERE. THOSE OF YOU ON THE BOARD FOR A LONG TIME, I KNOW IT WASHES OVER YOU. I TAKE IT TO HEART EVERY SINGLE TIME. IT'S SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO US. SOME IMPORTANT THINGS IS IT'S HARD TO HIRE PEOPLE IN THE HVAC INDUSTRY AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY. IT'S HARD TO DO IT. THE PRIVATE INDUSTRY IS HAVING A HARD TAME HIRING PEOPLE PAYING TONS TO DO THAT. SO MR. BEN MOORE AND MYSELF, A WHILE BACK, ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AGO CAME BACK WITH THE DISTRICT'S BLESSING TO GENERATE PARTNERSHIP. SO WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT? IT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT LAID THE GROUNDWORK FOR WHAT WE'RE DOING. DIANA WHO IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS AND CHANGES THAT WE HAD, SINCE SHE HAS BEEN HERE, WE CATAPULTED WHAT WE HAVE DONE. I WANT TO TALK AND GIVE THE POWERPOINT -- THANK POWERPOINT -- THANK YOU, PABLO. LET ME GRAB THE -- LET ME GRAB THE -- SO WE'RE HERE TO TALK ABOUT ENERGY STAR. WHAT IS ENERGY STAR? THE SCHOOL HAS MET ENERGY PERFORMANCE STANDARDS SET BY THE EPA. IT PERFORMS IN THE TOP 25% OF SCHOOLS WITH PROPERTIES NATIONWIDE. IT OPERATES WITH LOW UTILITY BILLS AND GENERATES 35% FEWER GREENHOUSE GAS GREENHOUSE GAS EEMISSIONS. THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE WE PAY OUR POWER BILL OUT OF THE SAME ACCOUNT THAT PAYS OUR TEACHERS. IT'S NOT A CAPITAL EXPENDITURE. SO WE TALKED ABOUT EFFICIENCY IN OUR SCHOOLS. HERE IS SOME OF THE THINGS WE HAVE DONE THAT THEY PARTNERED WITH US FOR. OBVIOUSLY THE OBVIOUSLY THE REFERENDUM PROJECTS AND HALF PENNY SALES TAX. INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDING ROOFING AND THINGS LIKE THAT. PROACTIVE PROACTIVE MAINTENANCE. WE WERE SO WE WERE SO OUT OF DOLLARS THAT WHEN WE WERE DOING MAINTENANCE IT WAS ALWAYS REACTIONARY. CLEANING FILTERS AND COILS AND THINGS LIKE THAT WERE THINGS OUTSIDE OF OUR SCHOOL BECAUSE THE FUNDS WERE NOT THERE. WE FUNDED THAT AND ARE IN THE POSITION TO DO THAT. A BIG CHANGE IS -- IT WAS JUST FIVE YEARS AGO WAS THE TRANSITION OF 100% LED LIGHTING. IT'S NOT ONLY COOLER BUT SAVES ENERGY. WE ALSO HAVE BILLING AUTOMATION SYSTEMS. LET'S SAY IF IT'S TUESDAY NIGHT IT'S A LITTLE WARM OR IT'S A LITTLE WARM OR COOL, WITHIN 30 OR 45 SECONDS WE CAN CHANGE IT HERE AND DO THAT WITH MOST OF THE CLASSROOMS NOA. MORE IMPORTANT PART IS ABOUT McKINISTRY IS FEEDBACK. SCHOOLS WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. FOR THOSE HERE FIVE MINUTES AFTER THE AIR GETS OUT, ALL SIX OF YOU GET A CALL ABOUT THE AIR CONDITIONING BEING OUT. IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN AS WE KNOW THAT. ONE OF THE THINGS WE STRIVE FOR IN OUR PARTNERSHIP AND I'LL LET DIANA TALK IS COMMUNICATION TO SCHOOLS. WHO IS THERE, WHO FIXED IT. WE ALWAYS HAVE ROOM TO GET BETTER BUT THAT'S ONE OF OUR FOCUSES THERE. >> THANK YOU. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS AND JUST KNOWING THAT WE'RE PART OF THE COMMUNITY AND TRYING TO MAKE THE MOST POSITIVE OUTCOME FOR OUR STUDENTS AND ENSURING THAT THEY GET TO THE CLASSROOMS AND HAVE SPACES IN THE BEST CONDITION FOR LEARNING. THAT'S REALLY OUR CORE BUSINESS IS MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, IT'S TO ENSURE THAT THE DISTRICT IS TO ENSURE THAT THE DISTRICT IS AS COMFORTABLE, THAT THERE IS RELIABILITY INCREASED AND ALSO THE EFFICIENCY OF OUR SCHOOLS. SO THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE REALLY HAPPY IN PARTNERING WITH THE DISTRICT ON. >>Christopher Farkas: SO YOU'D THINK THAT IF FROM THAT STANDPOINT WE KEEP THE AC ON 24 HOURS A DAY AND BLOW COLD, THAT WOULD BE A PROBLEM BECAUSE OUR POWER BILL IS OVER $30 MILLION A YEAR. THAT'S NOT REALISTIC AND NOT GOOD FOR THE EQUIPMENT. ENOUGH THEORY. LET'S TALK ABOUT THE ACTUAL NUMBERS. IN FRONT OF YOU IS THE RANKING OF CAPITAL OUTLAY PER STUDENTS. HOW MUCH MONEY WE SPEND ON CAPITAL CAPITAL OUTLAY. WE'RE 7TH OUT OF 67TH AND NUMBER ONE IN THE ONE IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA ONE IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA SO WE'RE EFFICIENT. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT. THAT'S COMING FROM THE DOE. NOT FROM NOT FROM US. SO LET'S LOOK AT PALM BEACH WHICH HAD AN ENERGY EFFICIENCY PERSON FOR THE LAST EIGHT YEARS AND HALF PENNY SALES TAX FOR 15 YEARS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT BEAT US. SO I'LL TALK TO JOSE ABOUT THAT, THEIR COO OVER THERE. THREE CENTS IS A LOT TO ME. WE'RE A LITTLE COMPETITIVE AND WE'LL CATCH PALM BEACH. IT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE. THE COST PER SQUARE FOOT. HOW MUCH DO WE SPEND ON WHAT WE'RE DOING. WE'RE BELOW THE STATE AVERAGE AND THAT'S BASED ON EFFICIENCY. THAT NUMBER WAS NOT THE SAME AS IT WAS FIVE AND SEVEN YEARS AGO BEFORE OUR PARTNERSHIP. SO WE GOT AN OPPORTUNITY YOU SEE THE PICTURE THERE. THEY HAVE A WONDERFUL AWARD YOU'LL SEE AN EXAMPLE OF HERE THAT SCHOOLS HAVE. WE HAVE 85 ENERGY STAR CERTIFIED SCHOOLS WITH THE CRITERIA I TALKED ABOUT BEFORE. FOUR YEARS AGO, THREE YEARS AGO, WE HAD WE HAD ZERO. SO ALL THOSE WE HAVE ACTUALLY GOTTEN IT. SO THIS PAST YEAR WE ADDED 29 NEW SCHOOLS. THAT'S THE PRINCIPAL'S MEETING WITH VAN IN AND THE PRINCIPALS YOU SEE THERE. THE ACTUAL LISTING IS HERE. SO IT IS NOT JUST EQUIPMENT. WE IS A GREEN LEAD CHAMPION AT EVERY SCHOOL. WE GIVE A SMALL STIPEND BUT IT'S THE TEACHER OUT OF THE PASSION OF THEIR HEART. IT'S RECYCLING AND TURNING OFF LIGHTS WHEN YOU LEAVE THE ROOMS AND THINGS LIKE THAT. WE HAVE OTHER EFFICIENCIES YOU'LL SEE. I KNOW WE HEARD FROM BOARD MEMBERS ABOUT EFFICIENCIES. UNDERSTAND THE THINGS YOU'LL SEE COMING BEFORE YOU ARE -- ACTUALLY ONE IN THE PROCESS OF HAPPENING IS LIGHTS THAT TURN OFF WHEN YOU LEAVE THE ROOM. YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE LIGHT SWITCH BEING ON. I HAVE AN 8-YEAR-OLD WHO IS ALLERGIC TO TURNING OFF LIGHTS. SOMETHING LIKE THAT IS HELPFUL. ANOTHER BIG PART IS SOLAR. THE LAWS HAVE CHANGED FROM SOLAR. IT USED TO BE YOU HAD TO BE A PRIVATE COMPANY TO GET THE TAX CREDIT. NOW THAT IS NOT THE CASE. YOU'LL SEE SOLAR COMING TO US THAT WILL BE A PART THAT WILL BE A PART OF THE PROJECT. WHEN YOU HAVE PARTNERS LIKE McKINISTRY AND OTHER BIG COUNTIES AND OTHER BIG DISTRICTS INCLUDING INCLUDING LAS VEGAS AND DENVER, IT HELPS US GO THROUGH THAT AND GO FROM LESSONS LEARNED. SO THANK YOU TO McKINISTRY AND THE BOARD. NONE OF THIS HAPPENS WITHOUT SUPPORT FROM Y'ALL. THE SUPERINTENDENT HIGHLIGHTS EACH OF THE HALF PENNY SALES TAX DOLLARS THAT GO THROUGH. THAT'S WHAT IT ENDS UP WITH. THE FINAL RESULT WHERE WE'RE ONE OF THE MOST EFFICIENT DISTRICTS IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. THANK YOU TO McKINISTRY AND THE PARTNERS AND THE BOARD FOR ALLOWING US TO HIGHLIGHT ALLOWING US TO HIGHLIGHT THIS. THANK YOU. THANK YOU ALL. >>Karen Perez: AND SEEING NO >>Karen Perez: AND SEEING NO COMMENTS AND FURTHER BUSINESS, THIS MEETING IS ADJOURNED. (SOUNDING GAVEL)
