Nancy turl executive director of Martin arts and we have been working with the school district since 1987 I was talking to Jen just a moment ago I think this probably one of if it's not one of it's longest running Schoolboard nonprofit Community Partnerships that has uh created quite a legacy in this community so I thank you for being such a strong and vital part of this 35 year or 34 uh year program with us um and it really the Legacy goes so much deeper we have artists and community members who move back to Martin County after going away from College who were in the high school jured art show and become volunteers and board members and even in one case a staff member so the high school jured art show really does pay it forward to this community in so many ways and I'm so proud of that um in fact two of your retired Arts teachers Sharon Hagen who is at Martin County High School who's here today and Tom pnik who is at both Martin County and South Fork over his long years have been longtime volunteers with the organization and and coach chair this exhibition every year so even as retired teachers in the community they continue to give back in a very strong and meaningful way um this show where we encourage the Visual Arts students to um to show the best work that they have really supports Beyond just having an exhibition on the gallery walls which is a really important thing it also supports creative thinking builds self-esteem and recognizes excellence and I think all three of those pillars are very important in the lives of students today um and before I start listing off all of the students who were involved in the show and there were 75 uh I have some sort of Pop news if you will uh Sunday night at the Tony Awards one of our Martin Arts Awards student Performing Artist Awards he received the mares in 2014 for student outstanding student Performing Artist Uh Kevin Paul who's part of the cast of The Outsiders on Broadway and won toning award for the new for new musical which I think in a 10year period of time leaving Martin County going off and getting his degree and finding his professional feat to be part of that cast is a pretty amazing feat we recognized he and many of the other students in our current Martin Arts magazine um to show and demonstrate where some of these young people have gone since they were involved in some of our programs here locally so if you don't have a copy I'd be happy to get you one um so the students as I said there were 75 students in this year's High School Marvin es con high school jured art show uh n Puma won best of show for her drawing The Other Woman I'm just going to read in alphabetical order the other judges Awards a Julia argraves Jessica Cordis and if any of the students are here I know it's summer and this timing is probably not the best but I know we have a couple Clark students in the back um Daphne Dalton Victoria Deek Lucas D Silva Kira een Emily galbreth Kennedy Goble matin Jensen Caitlyn kin Sydney Lan Abigail leelin May Lee Mia Lind stammer Alana long Ryan Lynch de olivaria Kennedy ma tan mcginness Ryan mcgean Madison Muk Ella rber Reber Avery Stewart Brooke Vander war and Sienna Wana in addition to our judges Awards again we bring in professional artists who make these selections we don't do it thankfully it's a job I would never want um we also encourage community members and a lot of folks from the school Community participate in our annual purchase Awards which means not only is an award given to the student but the work is purchased and then hung in sort of permanence in these locations our superintendent of schools Mr main selected an artwork called 15 by Victoria Deek Jensen Beach High School's principal selected two pieces Vanishing home by Kevin zoo and block print tile by Hillary equila chumil Martin County High School's principal also selected two statue of the Wild by Jamie Lopez Lopes and a light by Brook Vander southw High School principal Vicky Davis selected Shape Shifter by Daphne Dalton the Historical Society of Martin County selected rooster by Michael safery and last but not least the Children's Services Council of Martin County haven't had an opportunity to visit the courthous cultural center to see this exhibit I highly encourage that you do between now and then we're late tonight to 6 o00 probably not a good night but 10 to 4: Wednesday through Friday and um and Saturday this week we are open uh for the last few days of this exhibit and I thank you for the opportunity to partner with you and have your students be a part of this really amazing celebration of the visual arts in our community thank you thank you so much would you like to come forward we'll get a picture yes thank you s [Applause] right now we will have our district update with Derek low trying to get it to display I have it up but it's not yeah while he's doing that um Madam chair superintendent Maine members of the board good evening as Miss received their diplomas last month let's take a look at the recap of this Year's incredible commencement ceremonies this evening the gym is filled with the families and friends of our amazing students of the class of 2024 to celebrate the culmination of their hard work over the course of the past 12 years this is not merely a celebration of academic accomplishments although they are certainly congratulations class of 2024 here's to a future full of yeses [Applause] please join me in congratulating One Last Time 2024 friends of our [Applause] amazing in addition to the class of 2024 at our public high schools we do have some additional graduates the district's project search students also graduated last month for those who are not aware project search is a national program within the the district that prepares young people with disabilities for success in competitive integrated employment this year-long program for students ages 18 to 21 provides opportunities for mentoring and real world experiences let's take a closer look inside the program and at this year's project search graduates something I learned while in Project church this year was talking to new people and making on Conta five interns are celebrating the new skills they learned and the jobs they landed I'm currently working at the cafe in the clean clinic North the best part of my job my because there are so fun this is the day they graduate from Project search Project search is a one-year program um that began um in Cleveland Ohio when one special education director got together with the director of nursing at the Cleveland Clinic hospital there um and said let's do something together to benefit the community and help our young adults who have exceptional needs uh get employment through the Martin County School District and with assistants from Community Partners like Cleveland Clinic the Ark of the Treasure Coast helping people succeed and Vocational Rehabilitation these students learn important job skills this this year was working as a team and being Mindful and careful for the patient by interning in different positions at a real job site they gain hands-on experience employers look for uh I see you every day I see you every day when you walk in and you're helping in every aspect of our hospital it's been fantastic to have you all if I had to choose a favorite rotation in uh this hospital it would be nutrition at the program's end they share their achievements with mentors and District leaders and receive their diploma here it's so exciting to celebrate our interns um it's been an amazing year getting to see them grow we know that as you pursue your endeavors you're just going to go to a a great Heights and Achieve great things and you're going to make this community so much better thank you for the big this opportunity for p being here at the K M hospital is [Applause] the district is proud to announce or rather recognize Darlene ducet who is a food and nutrition services employee within the district at Murray middle school for earning the Florida school nutrition association's Community humanitarian award through her involvement with the St Joseph prayer Shaw Ministry Darlene crochets worry worms prayer blankets and caps for those facing difficult times let's take a listen to learn more about her remarkable achievement it makes me feel good to make to see a smile on somebody's face that feeling guides Darlene ducet whose mission in the Murray Middle School cafeteria is inspiring I try and do special little things for them and the other kids I always say good morning or good afternoon to them and try to speak to them by name but sometimes they run away before you can even say their name so you do what you can but Darlene's kindness extends beyond the cafeteria it touches the Martin County Community we're the St Joseph's prayer Shaw Group and there's a group of about 15 of us that go there and we knit and crochet for the cancer and and homeless and babies her compassion caught the attention of the Florida school nutrition Association earning her well-deserved recognition I won the fsna um humanitarian award Darlene and her group make hundreds of items for local hospitals and chemo centers the cancer patients get prayer shells for their laps we call them lap blankets because um they get very cold in the um infusion center it's very very cold there from pocket hugs to Cozy blankets and myy worms Darlene's Creations provide Comfort during tough times and we also have what we call little worry worms worms that we give them and they can hold on to those when they're worried they can give their worries to the worry worm Darlene embodies the meeting of going Allin Martin for students and the community district and school leaders couldn't be more proud to join the state in recognizing her dedication to making a difference the district's food and nutrition services department is also pleased to offer free nutritious breakfasts and lunches to all students ages 18 and under throughout the summer break there are no income restrictions for this program and students do not need to show their student IDs when attending one of the meal sites across the county there are 11 meal sites for students the food and nutrition services mobile bus will also be traveling to Indian toown to give out meals at both the St Lucy Mobile Village and at Booker Park for a full list of meal sites and times for those meal pickups you can visit our website martinschools.org the district recently held its summer professional learning opportunity for educators this summer called Camp teach Camp teach is designed to help Inspire and engage Educators to use technology inside the classroom this year Martin County School District employees took part in over 1,600 learning hours over the span of Just 4 days that's more than double that of last year's Camp teach let's take a closer look now at how the Martin County School District is learning to leverage technology when I think about the AI and education debate there's a lot of things that are going on in both the K through 12 and also the higher education space camp teach is a professional learning opportunity that we have during the summer teach stands for technology empowering academic change so we have a tech centered uh professional learning opportunity for teachers uh the teachers came in the the week after school got out and joined us for over 1600 hours of learning over four days we had all of our traditional schools represented in attendance we had almost all of our special sites and alternative sites come as well I try to think of what's coming for me for the next year and what new tools I'm going to need to help my students um or what new platforms or programs the district has put in place that there might be an informational session I do really like that there's um options and there's multiple options so if you if there's two you want you don't have you don't have to really pick and choose and lose out we had a ton of AI sessions so we had chances for teachers to play with AI learn about it and even just decide which one they like the best and we had a a keynote this year which we had a huge attendance for so you talked about innovative ways to use technology in the classroom um and it was a big success to have our keynote this year which we had never done before I do focus on the high school aspect in particular um it's about the college career Readiness but it's all about K through 12 how we can use um artificial intelligence for students the biggest thing to me is is the information and the working with colleagues um making connections and and U meeting people from different School sites and with different experiences and information um plenty of group discussions or oh I love that idea I'm kind of GNA steal that and with that that concludes this month's District update of course until next time you can find us wherever you scroll the district has its own website again martinschools.org we also have profiles on Facebook Twitter Youtube YouTube Instagram and Linkedin thank you thank you Derek Mr main would you please share your superintendent update yes thank you madam chair um would like to first uh before I get into introducing some new administrators that we have joining the district just wanted to kind of briefly go back to uh project search absolutely uh truly inspirational to have the opportunity to participate in that uh graduation ceremony there were four students uh that particular day uh when I found out at the end end of that uh session that two of the students had not secured jobs you know I looked at the team and I'm like this is we're going to get these two individuals jobs so I just want to give a shout out to uh Mr Raymond and the HR team uh and the food Nutrition department they uh came together very quickly got uh with the families and were able to secure two positions within our food nutrition dep department for two of those young men and so uh just just makes you proud as an educational organization to be able to do that uh Kimberly Brown the teacher is retiring so we will be sad to see her go however I know we'll get a phenomenal replacement for her so thank you for everybody involved in in that process uh without school is out but we are encouraging all of our students to stay sharp over Summer by joining one of our summer school programs the district is hosting a variety of summer programs at our school sites across the county the accessible for multiple families transportation is also being provided if needed our district has gone with a gear up for learning theme for this year's summer programming our gearup summer camp is being hosted uh for our elementary students along with our third grade reading Camp all of our middle school and high school students are attending camps such as stem Camp gear up for geometry and Gear Up up for algebra our school sites are also hosting programming to help our secondary students with any type of credit or grade recovery that they need to be promoted to the next grade level in order to graduate um we also have some camps mentioned at uh on the previous slide we have summer learning opportunities for test prep uh like act and for students preparing to begin taking dual enr enrollment courses at Indian River State College I cannot speak this evening all students attending one of these camps also receive breakfast and lunch daily at no cost thanks to our food Nutrition department so thank you very much and uh we just from june3 through the 13th we have over 1100 students joining our program so as you see on the slide there we have over 650 students that are joining our Elementary programs 100 students at third grade reading Camp 75 that are participating in our Middle School stem programs and over 300 students that have opted to join our secondary credit recovery and organ year up programs for a total of 1125 students that are spending time with us here this summer in addition to our extended day summer programming and gear up camps our exceptional student education department otherwise known as ese is hosting our extended year program we have roughly 200 students enrolled in this program and that helps to make sure that every student across the district has access to personalized instruction that they need to succeed uh with their districts within the district and with their curriculum goals as you can see listed on the slide here a lot of planning goes into summer programming we don't just snap our fingers and summer programming kicks off um behind the scenes several of our departments are working together to make sure that we can pull this off from our maintenance programs to our food Nutrition department as well as our facilities departments juggling all the different uh programming options as well as our summer maintenance and cleaning so we really appreciate our facilities Department our maintenance teams for working around those summer programming options that we're offering and making sure that your crews are hard as work to make sure that we're ready to go for for August when the school uh reopens so at this time uh Madam chair this does complete my um superintendent's update thank you thank you are there any questions from the board for any of the other information only reports okay see none we will move on we will now have member information share there any other or any board members that have anything they'd like to shareer Ley thank you madam chair sorry to surprise you all but we have a guest in the audience today that I'd like to introduce um many of you probably know I'm Brian Dr Brian Mor AR if you'd stand up uh Dr Mor Ari is um as you know I'm retiring the end of this year and Dr Mor already has stepped up to run for my seat and on Friday it was announced that he won his election being unopposed uh which is great and I I want to welcome you and I want to thank you for stepping up for the children of Martin County I know you'll do a good job and and we appreciate your upcoming service to our community over and above what you've already done thank you all right thank you it's not quite time for public comment but we can go ahead and get started and if anyone comes after they can join us at the end citizen input is vital to the Improvement of our district most times your remarks may be listened to without comment from the board members or superintendent this does not mean they are heard with any less intensity or concern where appropriate the superintendent and staff will investigate your comments and report back to you and the board with an answer we thank you for taking the time and having the concern to make our district better your presentation to the board should not exceed 3 minutes letters or statements from others not present can be given to our clerk who will be sure that each School Board member and the superintendent receive a copy to keep our record straight and authentic our policy does not permit you to read the statements of others into the record first up Laura dervan good afternoon my name is Laura dervin I um graduated from Martin County High School in 2003 and I just wrapped up my seventh year teaching at Martin County High School I'm also the advisor of skills USA and I'm here today to talk to you about Sydney Len um she recently qualified to compete in the skills USA national photography contest and the district is unable to fund her participation first I'm extremely grateful to all of you that got back back to me and even donated to who is representing Martin County high school and the district as a whole on the national level um apparently the issue is not the funding as the new requirements for Perkins require that all CTE programs participate in ctso which are Career and Technical student organizations examples of ctsos HOSA for medical students um FFA for a students skills USA for everyone else um the issue is not the funding it's that she's a liability and a risk given that she just graduated from Martin County High School in May she's no longer in focus and therefore not covered under the district's insurance policy I reached out to Jessica Garber she's the state director um for Florida for skills USA regarding the issue um she can only remember one other instance where District refused to pay for a senior to participate in the National contest and that was during Co times there's another outlier which is Cyprus Bay High School in Broward County um their students do pay out of pocket uh she thinks it's because they're in one of the wealthiest areas in Florida and they do have 30 students attending the overarching theme is that regardless of whether the student is a senior or a junior the vast majority of payments come from school districts or schools liability is not an issue because the national contest is before the fiscal year ends on June 30th in most situations seniors are considered students until this date some solutions activate Sydney in focus and enroll her an adult ed till the end of the month or send her as an employee she has been employed as an S3 for the district for the past two years and the work year year ends on the 30th if the school district wants to get to the number one spot we need to realize that a student who qualifies for a national contest is an asset and not a liability thank you thank you Suzanne Lopez hi my name is Suzanne Lopez I'm a retired teacher uh having taught in Martin County for 18 years I'm also a mother and grandmother and um I find it Dispicable that there are people that want to push sexually explicit books back into or try again to push them into the schools there's no place for this uh in the in our school district uh sexual education is the parents job not the Public Schools teacher job uh the sexualization of children is nothing short of grooming children are losing their innocence the worst of all is this whole trans movement and I'm sure most people have heard about what's going on across the country uh children are a captive audience when a teacher chooses to talk about certain things that in my opinion and I think probably most people's opinion it do not belong in the in the classroom um please continue to keep these books out of our schools they are obscene and immoral if a handful of parents want their children to see these books they can find them um but I think the vast majority of parents uh don't want these books they're objectionable and don't feel they belong in the school so the the class or the school libraries thank you thank you Jeffrey I can't read your last name if you could also spell it when you come to the podium I would appreciate it thank you madam chair could you please have the speakers speak into the microphone I'm having a hard time I don't know if anybody else is but I'm having a hard time hearing them thank you that's M A VZ Victor eeko Zulu thank you ahead okay uh my name is Jeffrey mayz I just graduated from MCHS I'm going to FSU in two days um I'm also here on behalf of the skills USA Club um I just really wanted to say that the funding for that trip is very very important to us because we've came we've come a long way Nationals is very very difficult to get to I'm sure you guys know that um only one person from the entire State of Florida gets to go to Nationals for that photography competition went to Regionals Sydney ju there she actually got in two states kind of under the wire and then got from states to Nationals kind of under the wire it's been a very very close competition um and this is a once in a-lifetime Opportunity she's competing in the high school level so obviously she's a senior she's going to graduate this year she won't be able to do that anymore and I will say that personally for me skills USA was one of the most fun times I've ever had in my life I also participated I did welding I did sculpture welding and it it's just a a lot of fun it's a way to develop your career skills for the future Sydney's currently photographer the reason she's not here right now is because she's currently doing her job I mean she's a job as a photographer she has a job as a photography taking photos and that's why these skills are so important using this in the school and providing funding this program is very very important because it allows us to have jobs that aren't necessarily you know math or STEM related they're CTE programs and skills USA is so important to the CTE programs because it allows you to hone those skills and compete against others who already had those skills home so having a national level competition that is funded by the school district can encourage people to compete can encourage people to get better at these skills and um prepare them for the jobs because they know that they're able to compete in that National level and become the best the best in the world and it's also important for those job opportunities Sydney being able to put Nationals on her on her job application for wherever she goes it's extremely important I can put that I went to States on my welding application if I want to become a welder Sydney can put that state on there but Nationals is another level um so I just want to tell you guys how important that is to us this skilles USA competition how important that is to sydne thank you thank you Victoria defenthaler as I read about the many Pride events taking place around our state and our country this month I'm reminded of my service as a member of this school board and my ethical and moral obligations as a public servant to serve all students in our district by providing an environment that encourages the self-worth dignity and equality of every individual sadly I currently do not see those objectives or obligations being met in this District at the last school board meeting students from Martin County High School pleaded with this school board to fund their theater program as a parent of a child who participated in the program and Community member it's disheartening to learn that the board is not supporting this program which has long been a staple of this community as you know everyone has different strengths some are talented academically some athletically some artistically including those who possess the interest in an ability to perform in theater Productions just like former Martin County student Kevin Paul who performed at this year's Tony Awards as was mentioned I continue to hear about the ongoing issues with funding repairs for the Martin County High School pool and the push back from the district regarding the use of a classroom for students to have a place to use for exercising and a safe place to be when temperatures are high or when there's a storm students should receive swim lessons because Florida is surrounded by water I know this was a priority for this County at one time because as a teacher I was required to accompany my students to Martin County High to participate in swim lessons there are certain sports that are prioritized and funded including providing maintenance up for areas for practice sorry and games such as football and baseball swimming is a sport that should be a focus especially in Florida students are awarded scholarships for swimming as they are for several other sports so why are you as a board not prioritizing and ensuring funding for this program I know you will say that there's a lack of money however even if this is true think outside the box and find other ways to raise funds or work to find a benefactor if students are truly your priority you would be working hard on their behalf to keep the pool and classroom open and accessible show students and families that you're act with your actions that you really do care the school board may say it's not their fault that the district cannot on these programs however if members of this board made it a priority instead of supporting Charters private and home schools which are defunding our traditional Public Schools this would not be happening I understand the Martin County school district has lost between 2,000 to 3,000 students and the funding that follows them why are you as a board not working to make Public Schools a School of Choice since those are the schools you've been elected to represent what are you doing to ensure that parents choose Public Schools board members have authority over the budget of traditional Public Schools however our residents tax dollars also help fund sh of private home schools and there's no local oversight for these how is this there who has overseeing the quality of instruction and curriculum being used in these schools are we willing to subject the next several generations of children to a system in which accountability of Education tax dollars and evidence of success are not possible to measure this point may be moved because we as we continue to witness a decline in enrollment school board members who Lobby for and continue to support vouchers and school choice are working themselves out of their own jobs because soon there will be no schools left to oversee thank you Elizabeth [Applause] crane good evening it's nice to be here Below school board thank you members for doing what you do could speak up just a little we're having a hard time hearing you okay I want to thank you all for being on the on the school board it's it's a really thankless job to get a lot of uh criticism and insults not not to many people thank you for what you do but I'm very very grateful that we have people that are willing to serve our community so I'm very grateful to have this opportunity to to stand here today uh I was a in fourth grade in 1962 and that's when they took prayer out of school and I saw a decline in our nation and me personally I would like to see our education be on a local level get the federal government out of our Lives nothing is government funded nothing it's all taxpayer funded but we're not being represented anymore we are being used and that's the whole definition of what Marxism is it's the administrative state that runs Our Lives the unelected bureaucracy which makes the decisions for us not the Constitution and it winds up that we exist for their benefit instead of the government existing for the benefit of the people and I have just seen such a decline and I don't blame people for taking their kids out of the school and I think Martin County has very good schools but there are so many I wouldn't even call them Public Schools anymore their government runs schools and they have an agenda and it's not for the benefit of the child I know I was in college my father taught me about communism so I was not indoctrinated but they did try so I I see what's been going on freedom is Blood Bought you can vote your way into communism but you have to shoot your way out please wake up and realize that all these issues we're dealing with today are so valuable to our freedoms we don't have freedoms without freedom fre to worship freedom to speak freely and freedom to disagree thank you for your time thank you David Hill good afternoon uh members of the school board and staff thank you uh for taking the time to hear everyone today I'm adjust you today as a father of three daughters who are in the Martin County School System uh I have a recently graduated fifth grader from Bessie Creek a middle schooler at Hidden Oaks and a high schooler at Martin County High School all three are actively involved in the swim program the high school are swimming for the team and the two uh younger are looking forward to coming up and joining the high school team uh an important factor for us in moving to Martin County which we did um approximately two years ago after 20 years in the military was the quality of the schools we moved to Southeast Florida to the Treasure Coast to be closer to a family but we got further south away from where the family is up in PE in Port St Lucy because of the reputation of Martin County schools and the quality of Education provided here and that's a testament to the members of the school board and the community the gem was that the high school had a pool on location and as a father of swimmers that was a very important factor to us I know there is an ongoing discussion on the cost of the pool's maintenance the decision going forward on keeping these asset within the county and uh and how important that decision is there is a sense amongst the members of the uh pool of of the swim program the parents especially on that there's a sense of the lack of open and forthright information regarding the decision-making process I'm here today to request full transparency on the issues specifically the quote that was obtained to repair the pool and the vendor selection process as well as the annual amount of budgeting for pool maintenance that is done yearly no one can expect a pool to stay open unless you allow a certain amount of money yearly to cover those big ticket items on maintenance when they do come due we really would like to see the numbers align item Budget on these issues and uh let us know how we can work with you to keep this pool open we're also looking forward to the discussions on the way to utilize the pool to benefit all students of Martin County not just the swim program including ideas such as teaching third graders to swim using the pool to certify lifeguards water safety instructors and many other numerous ideas that have been floated around by parents of the swim program thank you for your time today thank you rich shanbor Rich [Music] shanborne good evening uh Schoolboard members um I'm a master swimmer uh at the Martin County High School pool and I'm here this evening uh to speak out for the uh High School pool and keeping it open the high school pool is a good force or force of good here in Martin County it is a vital and much needed and much used community resource here in Martin County on weekday mornings that pool is filled with swimmers please keep the pool open Martin County needs as a minimum at least two competitive swimming pools the splash park pool cannot accommodate the swimmers that they already have and the the Martin County High School Kids please keep the pool open and accessible to the public and accessible to the swim community of Martin County uh during reasonable hours also please uh be a responsible and transparent school board to assist the best management of the pool Please Release detailed financial information on the pool that is the detailed pool revenue and expenditures in a timely manner as requested by the public numerous times uh please bring back the uh teach uh third graders to swim program and offer the water safety instruction WSI uh certifications uh also please offer high school students uh lifeguard training and certifications uh use the pool's classroom that by the way has been used for almost 50 years and to allow coaches to run the program thank you thank you heather [Applause] [Music] Rogers Martin Luther King Jr said the time is always right to do what is right as a supporter of public education it is horrifying to see Florida legislators assuming that anti-government extremist groups such as moms for Liberty and other extremist Christian nationalist speak for or represent the majority of our citizens they do not listening to our school board members vote for and advocate for religious private schools home schools and Charter Schools is completely inconsistent with your duty as a public school board member instead you should be advocating to stop the defunding of Public Schools board members who are working destroy public education instead of improving them are not serving the public school students however they are serving political ideology when I see board members tagged and comment men ing on how to help micro Schools home schools religious schools and Charter Schools I question why our tax dollars are affording you with a salary and health insurance proclaiming Freedom while actively working to steal from students who don't live in the right ZIP code or have the means of transportation the money or support to attend the schools that steal from public education is a travesty vouchers are nothing but taxpayer funded segregation because they don't allow all children to be equitably educated you are stealing from the public education by using and voting for them you are draining resources supporting the terrible testing initiatives while gaslighting community members into thinking Charter and religious schools are worth more than our public schools by privatizing education you are stealing the educational opportunities of most of our underserved students trying to remove all government protections from public education results in children not having the opportunity for a rigorous education regardless of what side of the bridge you live on in Martin County every child that lives here should be able to receive a solid foundation to despite their zip code or how much money is in their parents bank account giving certain parents over the choic control over the choices of the other parents is not about parental rights it's about fear and control our professional Highly Educated certified Educators and media Specialists must be supported not malign to ensure our students ability to critically think read write solve problems and receive a solid education Banning books defunding public education are the Polar Opposites of Freedom they are fear and control this fall when you are voting know that the people you vote for will impact our children long after we are gone vote for people that support a robust public education affordable housing Affordable Health Care versus those who are making it impossible to live here those who use fears control as political purchase and those who use your children as political ponds today I'm submitting documents of board members tweets comments Etc keep in mind your digital footprint will outlive all of us so tweeting that the Department of Education should be abolished and baned books is your legacy thank you thank you that concludes public comment and now we will take a brief 5 minute break and return shortly e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e all right we're going to go ahead and resume I'm going to go ahead go ahead yeah I'm waiting for them to give me the green white down there oh my God meet are we everyone pretty close to ready we will now resume our regular board meeting Miss cessa would you like to come forward and address one of our employees that is retiring absolutely good evening Madam chair superintendent members of the board my name is Julie cessa I'm your assistant superintendent of human resources and I'd like to bring up Mr Tom Harden our director of Transportation just for a little congratulations on your retirement Tom and I brought your boss with me so she can speak so highly of you we're gonna miss you Tom Dr Miller good evening Madam chair Mr superintendent members of the board and Mr Harden Tracy Miller Deputy superintendent and we are thrilled tonight to share someone who is not a stranger to anyone in this room he's been an integral part of the operations team and in the entire Martin County School District for the last several years we were thrilled when he decided to join us here and equally as saddened when he decided to go back into go retirement so you know family calls and while we understand that this family here in Martin County will certainly be missing him I think I already reached out to him this weekend I'm like does it feel different do you miss us yet because we're definitely missing him and so we just wanted to invite Mr Harden here this evening to have every allow everyone that opportunity to give our thanks and our appreciation to the work the effort the care the love and the concern that Mr Harden has consistently shown know our students staff employees and the community here in Martin County and we're just really thrilled that we've had the honor and opportunity to work with him get to know him and share a few laughs with him over the last several years so congratulations Mr Harden on your retirement Tom Harden we wish you the very best [Applause] come from Kentucky to Florida is a is different uh you know I knew how things run in Kentucky with uh with Transportation which I had to kind of relearn that here in Florida it's a little bit different but it is different uh but it was all a great great journey uh I've worked with amazing people for this District uh from the board to the superintendent to the executive committee uh to my team of Transportation I couldn't ask for more I'm very humbled and thank you for the opportunity thank you you want to come forward so we can get a picture thank you I'm gonna miss your hot dogs so thankful for the time that we had you here we are going to definitely miss you all right moving on Mr main would you like to say a few words at the time um yes thank you madam chair I don't typically go in this order but I did want to uh help the community understand a few items that were brought up uh during public comment uh first and foremost the Martin County High School theater program um will will continue uh we we have met with the staff there at Martin County High School we'll continue to provide the level of support that is needed to make sure that principal Salvage is growing the program with the theater teacher in making sure that those students have exactly what they need need for a thriving theater theater program the other thing uh that I wanted to also announce is that the the pool will remain open uh there are currently no plans at this time for staff to bring forward to the board the official closing of the pool if we go back and we remember uh several months ago several might be going back too far but at least a few months ago during a workshop it was staff's initial um information to the board as to what the total cost of repairs were going to be to give the board the opportunity to review those cost and make a determination as to whether or not it was feasible to move forward with those uh replacement of some of the the uh heaters and the pool liner or whether or not they wanted to start the discussion of potentially closing the pool uh there was never an intent nor direction from the board to staff to say close the pool so I do want want the public to to understand that as we've gone through this process it has been purely to gain information that we need as a district staffed facilities and maintenance team to make the determination as to what exact repairs needed to be made and when and if those repairs could be delayed or done in a phased approach or we needed to close the pool altoe because there was absolutely no money to to make the repairs uh the pool has always had capital monies set aside to make the necessary maintenance and repairs to the pool and so I've made the determination that the pool will remain open and that staff and our Maintenance and Facilities team will move forward as we always have in making the necessary improvements to the pool or fixes based on level of need so if there is a needs assessment presented and heaters need to be replaced or if the liner needs to be replaced prior to the heaters we will go through and staff will bring forward those uh recommendations to the board as we do in any other uh situation uh I also want to announce that uh Dr Miller has been meeting with and will meet tomorrow in a town hall setting uh for anyone who individuals who are very interested in the pool and information about the pool in full transparency and information to the public uh and I I definitely want to address uh the comment that was made that we've lost lost anywhere from 2 to 3,000 students uh vouchers definitely have impacted Martin County but vouchers have impacted every District across the State of Florida um it is definitely an option for parents to exercise their right to apply for a voucher and send their students to private school or charter school but I will tell you that uh 2,000 to 3,000 students is not accurate uh I have staff running those numbers now and would like to make sure that that factual information gets out there as to the true number of students that we've lost um right now that n that figure probably is a little closer to 600 to 800 students um but I will get that actual number out publicly so that we have that information on the table and I also just want to mention Charter Schools um so that the public understands charter schools are are not going to go away private schools are not going to go away and so as a Public School Superintendent that fully supports the operation of public schools I do have under my purview the responsibility to make sure that our charter schools are run efficiently as the charter authorizer and to make sure that we are holding those Charter Schools accountable to the extent that we can within statute each one of our charter schools has their own boards and they are under the purview of their board at the local Charter I review the charter application we present it to the board now that that's now that that that's now at the state level even but we do they do have access to our chief of Safety and Security they do have access to our Chief Financial Officer they have access to all of our staff here to make sure that they are abiding by statutes and also to make sure that they're utilizing staff for in as an informational resource if should they need it it is important for the public to understand that as long as we have charter schools in our district or Community Charter Schools have to be successful why because charter school grades fall under our district grade and so it would not be responsible as a public school superintendent for me not to support or for the board there even not to support Charter Schools if they fail we fail if they fail the students that attend those schools fail and so therefore As Long As I Am the superintendent of the Martin County School District we will continue to make sure that all schools Charter private within reason and definitely our Public Schools Thrive to their fullest extent if they're successful we're successful because again their school grade calculations directly tie to our overall District grade and in order to get to number one and in order to bring our overall District grade forward it is important that our Charter Schools also perform at the level in which we expect them to perform and the level in which they expect themselves uh to to perform so I just wanted to um put that out there uh Madam chair and make sure that the public was aware of that thank you Mr Man we will now be moving on to our action only items item number 18.01 Schoolboard travel are there any questions from the board I move approval of 18.01 second I'm sorry M Robert we have to have fun um all right let's 108,109 78 for the additional services are there questions from the board can we have um um Mr Morrison tell us kind of what the the option A and B in the superintendent Rec recomendation on this thank you Madame chair uh board members Mr superintendent um before you tonight you have an option A which um includes the preparation of the F has the preparation of the what used to be known forly as the caffer which is now known as the Aker which is our financial statement so um in 20 um 23 you approved the the preparation of the financial statement and the cfer or Acer um however there's a letter attached to the agenda item from the auditor general which pretty much says that um based on Florida statute they are able to skip the operational audit for the two years that they will not be auditing us and we have to contract for a private audit firm so the question before the board tonight is do you want to include an operational audit for an additional 42,1 $168 or do you want to exercise your flexibility to not do the operational audit and um your total cost will be about $1 15,928 uh the operational audit tends to look at operational items such as um looking at your payroll looking at your facilities Department looking at whether or not you complied with various items in statute for example with fiscal transparency uh we've seen not many audit findings um they tend to look at things and we pass the test each year however either way is fine um because we're always going through that process with them on a yearly basis but we wanted just to put that before the board to to for you to discuss and decide whether or not you want to include the operational thank you I currently have a motion from Miss Roberts is there a second that was for option b corre sorry that appreciate all the work that the superintendent and the CFO are doing on our on building the budget I appreciate all that transparency and all that information um I did the computation for what the millage at0 425 looks like and it's better than roll back and it's actually 7% Less in collections than it was the prior year if anybody wanted to know those numbers um thank you for Dr perendi for her work on the code of conduct Mr labarba for the work on the student progression plan um Mr Harden we will certainly miss you and also ask the superintendent I know that at the last month's meeting for agenda item number 3.03 I had asked for um somebody to contact tcca to get those items from page 39 and 40 I'm not sure who in the in our universe is doing um char School compliance but whoever that is just so that doesn't fall through the cracks thank you very much Miss Bret um I'd like to mirror most of um Miss Robert's comments not because I don't agree with her just that um I didn't get involved in that portion but we will miss you Mr Harden you made you made your employees smile almost every day and you made us smile every time we saw you and had a conversation with you and your chili recipe is now famous at my house so I appreciate that as well and uh congratulations to the graduates at project search and I did have one question for the superintendent um we were eager I believe at our last executive session to get some dates on the board for negotiations and I was wondering where that was do we have any dates with mcea at this time for for the summer um yes ma'am so at this time uh the district has requested dates for June and July there was no availability at this time from the union for either month uh they were sent notification on 5:15 with no response they were also sent notification on 517 the president was at a conference and and we were told that he would get back with us uh on 520 there was additional uh email notification as well as on 522 and of as of late today as well no no June or July dates thank you Miss Powers um thank you I just wanted to Echo what everyone said um to Mr Harden congratulations on your retirement again um I just want to say also I I really appreciate your advocacy for your employees it was really great working beside you um they are some of our lowest paid employees in the district and you truly advocated for them and our bus drivers are some of the highest paid on the Treasure Coast so you should be very proud of that and I I loved working beside you to and the board to get that done for your employees and I know that you are leaving the transportation department in very good hands um so congratulations and hopefully we'll see you when you come to visit the beach or something again so Mr M um yes ma'am the only uh two items that I had was uh while we were um staff was working on some of those numbers for me Mrs Roberts uh Mrs baros did text me and we have that information in a digital folder uh ready for you so Mrs baros will send you that that information uh also Val Cooper did a comparison of survey um survey three last year as a comparison to survey 3 this year and for Martin County
