##VIDEO ID:6dL5EixK-uk## e e e e e okay so it's 5:15 on Monday November 25th so I will call to order this meeting of the newm Human Rights Commission the first item on the agenda is the approval of minutes from the 1028 meeting if everybody can review and let me know if there are questions or changes needed anybody have any comments changes questions if not I would entertain a motion to approve the excuse me approve the minutes I motion to approve the minutes as presented do you have a second second all approve say I I I oppose same sign that motion passes then the second item or the yeah the second item is the review of the monthly financial report which is also attached um we do have a little bit left um we'll talk about this later in the agenda but what we had left was earmarked for the poster and essay contest um we only had one entry which we'll discuss we'll have a little bit left over I wonder if we want to consider if we have some leftover stocking up on things that go during the events like we probably can't do signning at this point late in the year but like the stickers bookmark things like that that are easy to hand out that are pretty popular if we have the money stock up now get ahead of the game we'll have $124 and then we'll have one prize any other questions about the budget or comments okay then the events committee report um the human rights award so the press release was submitted so that went into the journal and then the deadline for nominations is December 13th and then the nomination form is attached again so it just has it's submitted to Lisa at newal at newal minnesota.gov the deadline date is the 13th and then it just says information about who's submitting it and then who they're nominating and why so we will review nominations at our next meeting I wonder I know it's been hard in the past getting nominations I wonder if we want to look at printing some visual like some actual ones to put it like the library places like that just because I know it's been hard to get submissions in the past yeah we usually we haven't gotten too many submissions like one or two yeah might be nice to Garner some interest I mean I'd be willing to throw together a flyer that we could print some copies it's a good idea like it I don't know if we need a motion or anything if I just throw one together yeah but is that something then we could also if we have like a flyer we could put on social media as well yeah just send it to Lisa yep you just send it to Lisa and she can put it out okay where do you think some good places to post it would be trying to think of where where would Library maybe coffee places what about any of the um church church boards their Community boards um that what is the name of the book the collective thing there they have bon board too yeah Luka yeah oh yeah we could even see I don't know if this would meet the criteria but the peach jar thing that they use for the school district to send out I don't know if this meets criteria for that but I could ask I haven't really tried one of those but I can make one and send it have Leisa send it to everyone and then people can print and put wherever they have yeah that would be connections Community connections thank you um then education committee report so the poster essay and video contest we received only one entry and it was a poster entry so we need to discuss the presentation of the award um and then possibly invite the participant to the next meeting that's an option um and then we need to discuss are we continuing this contest next year or should be eliminate it and think of something else next year CU we've had now this is the third year in a row where we've had little to no participation with this contest and I know you guys did a great job on the education Committee of advertising tried the video tried a little bit new um strategy this year and just still have not had much luck so yeah I think we'll probably you know I don't know at what point we want to start discussing that but other options probably for maybe if there's a different way to do some Outreach to the school age kids yeah that would be good too to if we have some student Commissioners to discuss you know include them on how we can um have some youth Outreach that might be successful you're saying Outreach different than trying to get them engaged in a contest you're saying a totally different method of of Outreach right yeah okay yeah to kind of look at maybe doing something different than a than a contest type yeah I don't think the contest I mean even the library didn't get a lot of entries for their library card design contest it's just not yeah it's disappointing cuz we had really good submission in the past so that's disappointing but it it's time for something new yeah um so we want to discuss how we're going to present the award to the winner um do we want to just invite them to the next meeting do people have thoughts I know we talked about displaying it but with only one entry that's probably not going to work but we need to at least Le to figure out how we're going to present the award I know in the past we had had the kids come here with family members and then we did it right at the beginning of the meeting and invited them up and a little picture and stuff maybe the mayor will even be there I mean I think we could do that but Devil's Advocate would it feel a little weird to call you know they're the only person that entered I don't know winning a race of one doesn't have quite the same yeah it's hard I mean it's hard when the person I mean it's just process of elimination that the only entry so they automatically win but they also still put that yes that should be yeah she acknowledge in some way I appreciate that don't know how MH I can it just be posted on like social media or can we put it up here and just say come see it here we could ask Lisa if there's somewhere in the building here that it can be displayed I don't know at least it knows everything I assume it was a poster yes there was one poster entry okay mhm and Lisa has it I believe so do we have do we want to invite them do we have a motion for inviting them do we want to just display it and let them know that they want and give them the I mean they'll get the award was it typically part of the meeting that we that it was done it was done and we would like w kind of move the agenda and do it right at the beginning the only one it would still be kind of special for me maybe even get them to be on the council you know ABS I think it'd be cool to acknowledge them I would make a motion to invite them to the next meeting and acknowledge them in front of the entire commission I would second that okay I'll approve say I I oppose say same sign and then as far as the continuing the contest I don't know if we need a motion or if we just want to push that to when it gets closer to next year to when we or later in the year later in I don't know it's 2025 almost when we start discussing it and just talk about what we want to do then something for the education committee to brainstorm maybe I would I would favor discussing it sooner rather than later not waiting till a year from now yeah absolutely otherwise we'll probably then are looking reasonably at a year and a half before we would actually Implement whatever other thing we do to take its place I don't know that we would need a motion do we just want to task the education committee with at their next meeting yep at our next meeting to come up with some suggestions for other ideas we can have Lisa put together a special education committee meeting and then go from there okay okay um other business so first thing is the community needs survey we discussed this in the last meeting um sorry they were able to we can put it on the social media and I have I feel like it is posted now I can't remember if she was going to post it or it is posted the QR code for people to participate but then we had discussed preparing a press release for the survey survey so that more people can um see that we're looking for information so we need to prepare a press release for that survey I don't know if we need to do it here or if we just need to I can work with Lisa to could we make a motion to nominate Kristen to prepare one yeah we could do that Lisa can work with Lisa is that a motion to have Kristen prepare a statement and send it to Lisa okay do you have a second I'll second that I'll approve say I I oppose same sign that motion pass second thing is the student Comm commissioner vacancies we did receive one application that application is attached for Kaden sh schaer um so it's attached question was why are you interested in serving on the new Human Rights Commission I'm interested because my parents have influenced me to treat everyone equally in life I think that this commission is a good representation of my beliefs about equality I also think this commission will help me to contribute to the community and fairness of of everyone this commission will help me use my skills to ensure fairness and equality in the community what makes you a good candidate for this position I believe in what this commission stands for I'm a reliable hard worker I am empathetic and care about people and their feelings I am punctual I'm intelligent I'm an intelligent person who has participated in the Human Rights Commission activities in the past and then just has the information so that is our application any discussion so he's a 10th grader so he could serve for two 10 for the next two years in the commission I think that he sounds like a wonderful candidate and I would entertain a motion to or I make a motion to uh um approve Caden schaer for the student commissioner position two years okay I don't know if that needs to be on there back do we have a second I'll second that okay I'll I will be abstaining from voting perfect I'll approve say I I oppose same sign that motion passes and we'll have Lisa reach out and get him the information to join the commission um then the third item is the wellness Collective request so this came up in the last meeting so the wellness Collective had reached out to see if the Human Rights Commission would um be able to to sponsor their free class Friday for December because December is human rights Awareness Month attached is a message that was sent to Obe he regarding this um because the wellness Collective is not a nonprofit We are not actually able to um donate money or sponsor to them so while we appreciate them reaching out um we just are not able to do that at this time they might be one organization we just keep in our back pocket we're looking for other participation with other things but for this particular thing we're not able to since they are not a nonprofit organization I was going to say I think it's probably too late now cuz it's almost December but like maybe next December we could partner with them and do some sort of like awareness thing with their yeah class some sort of partnership activity yeah we can't like provide money but we certainly could partner so I was under the impression that they're um the part of their operation is a nonprofit but it's not huh no I had OB worked out specifically because the question came up because we wanted to put it on the agenda and so they are not okay so she specifically reached out and asked them cuz she thought they were as well but they are not so other questions or comments about that okay legislative update there is one today so I'm really sorry um the Minnesota care is now available regardless of immigration status effective January 1st 2025 and that poster is attached and it just has the information of if how you um apply how you qualify and that it states that immigration status does not matter if you are applying for this um so it's just awareness that this has passed and this will be affected as of January 1 any questions on that or comments all right um next is the city council aison that's David he is not here today so I don't have any updates I don't know if anybody has caught any but he didn't send anything to me so I don't have any updates and then the date of our next meeting um we do need to discuss so it would be Monday December 23rd it's the week of the holiday so just kind of checking in do we feel like we want to hold that meeting do we want to look at rescheduling it or do we want to cancel it those are kind of our three options just because it is the week of the holiday so we just wanted to touch base on that since it is a busy week for everybody and the only problem I see about cancelling is the human rights award is that okay if we just move that yeah we can push it would we consider extending the deadline for nominations in light of the fact that we wouldn't be meeting could especially if we oh the press release already oh yeah and we start there are there is availability to use this room other dates so if we wanted to not have it on that day but look at other dates what we've done previous years because it's happened a few times now that it's fallen on this week um is Lis can just s out like these are the dates that are open and everybody can respond with I can come to this one or that one or all and then we figure out which date works for the majority so we have a quorum so that is an option I like that idea I feel like sometimes we have enough trouble with a quorum and being that public school now has that entire two weeks off yeah absolutely won't be here so and it's I feel like last year I know we had a meeting and that's what we did and I feel like the year before as well so it's worked out to throw some other dates out there she's able to look at when the chambers is available is there a motion on that one a motion to pull for some other potential dates for December meeting okay a second I'll second that I'll approve say I I oppose same sign so that motion passes as well did you want to do the okay perfect now that you're going to have a December meeting okay perfect all right so then that leads us to adjournment so I will adjourn in this meeting of the new Human Rights Commission thank you everybody thank you thank you
