training of Province um as will helping their [Music] we have a to approve donation from Transmission in favor thank you so much for the donations appreciate all right superintendent entry plan fins okay um so I shared with me a um comprehensive entry plan that is one of the final steps toward this initial year um that be my superintendency um during the fall I came to committee and shared with them my plan for listening and learning uh data collection and then what we have in front of you tonight is the analysis and reflection um I was focusing on three key areas during this entry uh first was our students experience can you guys give [Music] me um first is our students experience how do we provide all students with quality education that Fosters personal development and intellectual growth uh the second component was engagement of the school Community how do we partner with fames Brad to our citizens Sor our students engaging learning experiences see This Global Citizens and then finally looking at the organizational capacity of nor schools so I have a few findings to share with you all tonight um I wanted to start by talking about about the student experience first um we had almost 600 students in um grade 6 to 12 participate in a very brief survey and those that responded 87% of our middle school students and 85% of our high school students reported that they feel a sense of belonging in your school so I I was really happy to see um those numbers 90% of middle school students and 86% of high school students reported that they feel respected for who they are at school and then 9% of middle school students and 84% of high school students reported that they have an adult in school that they trust and that they can go to if they have a problem and those three areas there are something that I think are really really important because if students feel safe and respected at school they feel that sense of belonging and they know that there's a trusted adult in the building that's the best foundation that we can provide for our students um so it be really interesting for us to kind of take a look at find out who are our students that don't have a trusted adult um at school and how can we help to support them how can we help um students also talked a lot about the great things that um help them learn um they talked about things that teachers do both in and outside the classroom um that they appreciate as um students and I'm not going to revie all of them um but they talk about they see me as a person and not just a student um they're a great listener they don't give me the answers but they help push me in the right direction um they break out the content to help me understand and they know who you are they excited to see so I thought all of those things were really great we see that our students have that um thoughts and feelings about uh our our Educators is wonderful um I also included some things here regarding uh student achievement some of the things that does really well is that we focus on the whole child we talk about academics we talk about social emotional wellness and um Wellness we talk about College and Career Readiness and that gives us a really great opportunity to look at every single child from a holistic perspective um we also have a really strong internal data system that takes a look at how students are performing um not just on um Statewide assessments or those big assessments but also how they're doing day today um not just not just in the classes but some of the local assessments that we do as well we can also look at attendance um student discipline kind of as a sense s so those are s things that we're doing well areas of growth in terms of the student student experience um so we really need to shift a little bit of our Focus uh to higher expectations for learning for all students uh for a long time we've been having conversations about SEO uh and and we don't we want to make sure that students and staff and families all understand that having I high expectations for students academically encouraging grit perseverance and keep trying that's all part of social emotional Wellness for students so we want to make sure that we are really looking at how to refocus our attention around High academic expectations um this past year in grades 3 through eight only 40% of our students were categorized as meeing or exceeding expectations in ela and only 35% of those of students were considered meeting or exceeding expectations in the area of math that is significantly lower than where we want to be as a school Community um in most cases we were actually the low State average and so we want to make sure that we are really focusing um on academics making sure that students have the resources uh and the instruction that is needed uh to be to be successful not just on this one assessment but really um across the board also for us um it's important for us to be looking at student subgroups so for example um lwi income subgroups or students with disabilities there is a large gap between um our all the other students and those student sub groups so that's something that we have to look at our programming and our instruction and see if we can figure out ways um to support those students when it comes to engagement of the school um of the school Community there are few different things that were um kept coming up over and over again one of the things that fames talked about they they want more communication um and so I think we actually do a ton of communication but they're actually looking for something a little bit different they appreciate the superintendent newsletters and the newsletters that they come that come from the schools but they're really looking for more Target communication about their own individual child what is their child doing in the classroom um what are things that are happening during the day and how is their child doing academically um they're looking for um more alignment of school and District events um that's something that we always have a little bit of a difficult time with tonight we have the all um all School band event and here we are um at the school committee and our jointly so um that is something that we need to be better about in taking a look at engaging our families um 70% of our families that responded agree or strongly agree that their child feels a sense of belonging in their school which is really really great um and you know when we ask families what is holding you back from being more involved it wasn't necessarily something that we were doing wrong it's just families are so busy in their day-to-day schedule it really makes it difficult for them to come in um during the day or to be at school events so some families asked about you know more often to see weekend events or pureing and answer sessions with school administrators um are family and I know that you know our admin a lot of things like that over the years and it's really difficult to get people come out so we have to think more creative about how we Eng those things one of the areas that is something that we need to really take a look at in terms of growth that we have 33% of our families respond that they do not agree with their child School values the diversity of children's backgrounds um they also talked about that um they don't always feel welcome in our schools or at school events when you have families of a diverse background or family structure um they're not necessarily always feeling as well so that's something that is important for us to that the organizational capacity of new public schools there are a lot of things that we're doing really well and of course always opportunities for us um we have some really great systems in place for collaborative dialogue and databased decision making specifically and prely when you're looking at grade level teams um or even the the the teams at Middle School where you have out different content areas together there's a lot of opportunity for teachers to work together and to collaborate with their Prof weeks the high school is more of a challenge because of the schedule it's um often difficult to get together to have some of these conversations at the same time um we have been participating in the high quality instructional materials Network for the last few years which has really allowed a great opportunity for us to take a look at research based instructural materials um and as well as a curriculum review process um the other thing that is really currently a great um aspect of your public schools is that we have specialized support staff such as our crical coaches and our technology integration Specialists who really provide sustained professional development for all of our staff they model lessons they Co plan they getri to feedback um and it's really helpful for media and commun um areas for growth in terms of teaching and learning this is goes back to um looking at the academic expectations uh for all of our students um in some parent surveys uh they was some concern about a decline from one grade level to the next so for example um they felt now just use of you know moving from third grade to fourth grade that the half of expectation for actually um and then other families said students were able to attain the Mastery of skills with very little effort so looking at that um um level of academic expectations for students um we have a lot of opportunities for students to receive enrichment I'm sorry interventions um to help get them caught up but we have very few opportunities for enrichment for our students that are really succeeding um and then also we have made moves to Encompass a lot of research based instructural materials but not in all three levels all content so those are things that we are work on in terms of finance and operations um we have constantly heard about the need for transparency in the budget process um so this year we tried really hard to increase Community engagement and participation we sent families monthly budget updates through the superintendent newsletter beginning at the very beginning of the year um we also included visuals that were designed to make information much more accessible to um all shareholders um I also gave presentations to the north Republican committee earlier this year as well as the more Finance fund um those are some things that we need to continue to do we need more communication um with the broader community so our community members that don't have a daily connection to the school how can we um provide them with the most accurate information um and of form that's easy for them to understand um as you know we all know social media is great but when the wrong information is out there it's extremely um difficult for us to kind of pull back on those things um people if it's on Facebook it must be true so um we need to make sure that we're getting them ual uh information that isant um we have few Staffing changes this year in central office um so it's given us a great opportunity to look our human resources practices um at some point we really do need to update to All Digital records um one of the things that is interesting about staff records is we have to keep them forever like we never get rid of them um so you would imagine what F cre things into a digital capacity at some point um and then also looking at realigning uh office responsibilities in terms of hiring on boarding staff a lot of things were done through Mrs Rand she was here and good opportunity for us to take a look at um working a little bit um more um special um the special education department has done an incredible job this year really working ons and exit criteria for our specializ programs um another thing that is really wonderful of our tion program is that we have an extremely active CA um which really supports our families um and the special education administrators um they work extremely closely with Vinnie and Casey for the course of the Year providing feedback um and also offering advance for families um another thing that has gone really well this year with the special education department um we just had the Department of Education here for a whole week looking at all of our records and through the process we got a lot of positive so things they were really Happ to see of course they always find few things that we need to fix um but overall really really positive feedback so easy for all of the world in terms of areas for growth um in the people uh special education um vny and KY are two very very busy people um and they have a number of areas for overse responsibility and what we found is that um we're really not strategic in the way that those roles are set up um so we are looking to realign those positions um not only to play to their own individual stengths but also to make a little bit more sense um which you know hopefully will make the process a little bit more logical um for the Department um another area of grow is that you know we have had some a lot of conversations this year around student incidents and how we report them um so so the office of PPS has developed a specific protocol that principales teachers and pars are putting into place in the classrooms but we need to make sure that we have a lot of clarity for that looks like um and make sure that those things are um implemented consistent and finally our tech department um we have an extremely successful on toone program here in part um all of our teachers are our professionals our students um everyone has a device um and we were actually which was wonderful when school fur took place um the department itself is is very wello appointed they have a constant presence in our schools and classrooms um our technicians are very quick to respond making sure that our teachers have exactly what they need for the daily lessons and if something is you know all of a sudden working they're imly over there trying to figure out and see how we can make it better um we were able to uh supply all of our fre eight classrooms with those digital comman boards um and then the department has also LED our transition this year to the new student information system um so for those of you who are familiar we currently use School brings um as part of the fy4 bu process we are moving to power school so that work lot on all of that it's an extremely cumbersome process um but they are reading the charge there we begin to P her sta in the next um a few areas for growth there is that the teacher and administrator laptops are actually getting to we approaching end of life um on them so we will be looking to purchase new laptops at some point um just in order to maintain a level of productivity and another component that families talked about was they were concerned that their children were maybe SP too much time on screens in terms of of lessons and online activi so um we really need to take a look um to ensure that there's a good balance of appropriate apps or lessons that are using technology or the high from books and then also students you know writing reading actual books in all of those other thing that we also students um so I just wanted to share with you all a few strengths and opportunities um for the district as a whole um overall strengths is it everyone that I spoke to talks about an overall feeling of community and caring between students families and Educators um there's a lot of dedicated staff that has a lot of longevity that truly care about their students the commitment to the whole child seems students as more than just a test SC test score um and professional development that really align with our district initiative and educ needs um challenges these are nothing surprising I'm sure to anyone at this table or in the audience ongoing budget deficits within our community that requires Staffing and program changes um inconsistent practice practices around communication um when it comes to families the performance Gap within student subg groups the need for more training and resources to support diverse cultures perspectives and backgrounds inconsistent beliefs around student learning and rigorous expectations for all students um so those are some strengths and challenges there so our next steps are really to engage the community and taking a look at our current strategic plan we have Vision 2026 that is kind of its midpoint at this time um but with the new information that we have um it's really important for us to sit down and take a look at that vision and say does this meet the needs of our our district in our community based on what we know the new information that we have um and where can we make changes um I think one of the biggest challenges for us right now is making sure that within our entire Community um we're keeping minds of communication open assuming positive intentions and taking the time to listen and learn from each other um at the end of the day I think we all have similar goals that we want our students to succeed um know what's best for them we want them to feel safe and accepted accomplishment um and absolutely have opportunity success work so we will be continuing to take a look and identify um where we want to start some of these these opportunities for grow Happ answer any questions or talk more specifically about anything that WR down you know data and whatever but you what you saw so thank for that kind we been talking about exactly like from survey respons what Reas aspect Reas just um some really great comments in the surveys as well so um you all have the paper version of this document it will get posted on our website back said be well they're all R all in here so um there were a few comments about um the need for sta training around um racial eth or um conversations about um a specific experience that they may have had whether it was a profer or with an administrator that was difficult for that in terms of that long um so I will once it goes up everything is imp AC it's exactly how people shared it um if there were specific names um I took those names out um or I think um keeping people's privacy there as well but um it's all there and available forone well yeah I think communication too like I can see why people live in certain just sitting here both as a parent and as school commun M as well communication 50 bu process been meetings here have been well organized you know step by step I think that's a you know a definitely huge step in the right direction from from Christine way to J as well I think from Stand D kind of small of just like how better and clearer I feel like we can understand what's happening you know um you know we're challenges so it's made even harder to a certain degree and thankfully we've kind of been prepared um you know I feel this more we've been since I've been on you know Mak these meetings in this future meeting I feel like we're kind of all like this is what's going on here you go you know which bud every you know if you want to find it you can find pretty simple I think the one thing to remember too is one of the positions we lost was that Communications position you know that was responsible for law we put out to you know the town as a whole so I mean that's a big that we have to kind of make up it's not that's not responsibility stick with somebody else so that's been you know I mean we get you know the you know the emails from superintendent and and one thing I always been struggle with is I only have one student so I don't know what's going on but you know for the flat schools because I only have one one student in high school I didn't know so I me just simple small things like that like I know I it was one year we we had a meeting and it was bage conferences something why are we needing this all confence I think something like that is just we don't get a lot of districtwide communication not that I want seems to beo you know just understand you know too so yeah I mean I think just I every can be a little different you know High School talk your kids tell what's going on a second gr yeah so I'll apologize ahead of time okay uh so start here uh I feel like we need maybe miss an opportunity here to delve into what we need to do um rather than kind of add ourselves in we we talked about student experience we a bunch of great things about them but we didn't really get into okay we just like this would be a great time to ask just left so ask but there's there's no way that that the student experience is more positive right so why AR we why AR we St we need to look at the netives to say yeah this is a follow you know whatever and we have to figure out fix that um so you know the idea we focus so much on a little disar to me um and then when we did focus on the negative it sounded like we kind of kind of pigeon hold ourselves to like what we discuss as subgroups and I'm not sure why we honestly um some of the stuff in here like you know there was one of the comments were someone was a uh 33% of families are respond don't agree the school B backs and I read that I'm not really sure me because the numbers St we're kind of right and we are that's that's the reality this is not a city district that we have people from all walks of life so I'm confused by what that kind of means I'm confused by what talking only about you know there are sub groups we have to address the Gap in sub groups quite frankly you I made comments my you know the G is prob in line with Nationwide I I doubt you need to situation so at some point say okay well what's the opportunity cost of focusing all our attention you by that we were spending so much time looking at one thing we forgot about the larger larger iing this I saying about you know if you you have and there's a bunch of holes only two hands toop what stop stop so at some point we have to start right are are we letting all the kids kind of through the down are we are try to and I know that's know it's going to soundous to some people but the the reality is we are in of situation we start thinking high so look specifically one of the things that we keep talking about and that I didn't highlight as much is the tier one inst so high quality materials research based we need to make sure that tier one is really really strong that's AE job we're going to continue to see kids Sil for the Cs um or meting Intervention which we we don't have and then also education members go so it's um we have to focus on that's the problem and I what you're saying hey Fus on this all I'm not so sure I AG you know times education not way so I I trust in your opinion the opinion District however I also want to make sure that we're not forgetting that there is we talk about every student and being sure me student I feel like we're starting to get away from that I feel like start away from me mus and we're we're so worried on the subp and what's going on there we forgotten that there's you know a whole number of kids that are losing education they losing attention I don't know I mean it's again it's stress imagination sit I'm just out I feel like we start to focus so much on that we're losing losing sight of something else this was so not issues and like I think now what iume would happen next is like what are our goals and how we going get to those goals based on ours and I also I just think um I want to say this um I think we spend minutes about of time talking about that um we really me the needs of every single K our whole imss process is around making sure that every single student has support so I think we probably talk about the we talk a lot about student needs um because they're there they exist but I um you know that we aren't focusing on all students I think that that has been the goal of this team and um you know constant conversation about making sure that we're looking at students the whole Rich we don't have M opportunities um to just more communication you talk but here part the disconn could I mean do we have for any of our students I mean sometimes we have like during our our walks students will work on support they a big group teer um they could be reading High Bible book than other things jobs students so sounds that sounds students so so talking focus on everybody same time so I I I respect you respect and that's right that's point of this student experience second ISC next student such as special so so want to really really the way that I wrote that statement is that we have to improve all wars that's that's way doesn't read that um we need to look at all this this as an area for grow of grow for all student in addition but um it's I I feel like and I feel like we're starting to to lose a persective that there's an entirety of school it's need to make sure everybody's getting the value of Education we're just not we don't seem to be going we seem and this is not to suggest that sub groups don't attention the opportunity cost should be that we [Music] start larg grou anything else on this thank you other um I think Dr has something for you I I know people having a hard time hearing so M on hopefully everybody will be able to hear me [Music] okay facing you and talk as they talk that no he we can hear you and Jen fine you're projecting your voices this [Music] way thank you thank you if I Pro I'm not yelling I just want to make sure that um I can be heard so um thank you um first uh School community members do you each have the supplemental hmh packets um so I wanted to provide an update from uh our our last meeting we had reviewed the H materials in the process and I think the consensus was with the workers seal quality the teacher bual teacher engagement was phenomenal but also understanding we also have numerous competing priorities with pretty significant financial EXs so when we reviewed their proposal the request was to go back to the vendor go through a second round of negotiations and then report out what those numbers manifest so I just okay a public update so um I did to ask hmh for three levels of product um the first level which is the optimal level in terms of durability in terms of cost in terms of efficacy is the 5year plan so it's a 5year plan the aant cost for that is [Music] $2,273 69 I know the request was made to ask for 5year payment plan um unfortunately it was wasn't able to successfully navigate that process but the aate cost reduction in the process was $31,000 is from the March time period and then approximately $150,000 discounted in the Agate from the initial proposal of credit so the offer for the 5year plan is present would be a year one payment of approximately 68,000 year two payment of approximately 66,000 and a year three payment of approximately 66,000 as well uh the pricing structure would be a 34% in year 1 33% in year 2 33% in year 3 the committee the three one year first or Are there specific questions about ien SE the numbers maybe just [Music] add just give us the three and one just the numbers back and we it sounds good threee option 17 175,000 $175,500 year 1 60,000 year 2 575,000 year 3 575,000 onee auction uh payment plan year one $94,000 following years is approximately 37614 in year two year two Beyond figuring that 37614 figure with roughly 1 to 3% inre [Music] okay so um so I talked to about this and I'm not looking actually I see numers here um my my quick thought C the year one actually makes actually whatever consider that um in discussing this with with Brian so we're we're currently going to pay $30,000 for our the Cur we have now yes so additional materials that would be a so right right so I think it's important to kind of take that number out of this as we're looking at these so the the 5year really is 38 36 36 the three is really 30275 275 so I'm kind of on offense on this because the budget is right now however at the same time I think you know we also talk about the fact that we don't know that this is a needed a needed C and if it wasn't if we thought this was just a net net wash we wouldn't be having this conversation we wouldn't do it but we do feel like there's um there's some some benefits to this so as I look at this you know I think from standpoint we need to kind of break it down year by year because that's byly how we do disc so if you're looking at it you say Okay year one 38 versus 30 um you know the five to a three in the five year the numbers are pretty close you take the 30 the 30,000 out I make the assumption that we' be paying the 30,000 forward anyways so if you take those numbers out you know in the fiveyear we essentially after 3 years get two years you know we discussed for free so I'm not sure why look at a threeyear option either quite honestly because again the numbers the numbers on a yearly basis don't want to do people quite honestly um so so it really comes down to the question of do we have the room to fit in the 38,000 38,000 this year and then in 36 36 Vol years so that to me that's kind of the question um and I think it's probably important to to discuss you would mention um seeing some seems and the rational behind changing the curriculum and what you know what transpire over time with the old I think it's probably important just really really so we adoped Lucy which are units of study which are generally fairly broad they're excellent with generating ideas and conversation but they're not as pinpointed specific as they should be with uh ly skills foundational skills which is why we use Foundation over time what happens experience becomes a little bit less synergistic and systematized schools still what this allow to do have very intensive professional development period depending per get materials early we'll be able to align with all our teachers together Sten sequence and really hit the ground letter so that you're ready for full development this Universal experience five September so I think back times I think our big thing heree the year one three really don't make sense financially um you know obviously curriculum is expensive I think Brian's do a good job working and and you know this from what 370,000 down to down to 200k I mean I think everyone knows Lucy is not what we need we're struggling with J has it right area for growth you know with our M&S testing our daily interaction with students the foundation reading at the elementary school level is quite frankly conf uh I think there's a huge aspect here that like you are going to get a return investment you know and and I think that's going to be through study success um we all doesn't take a rocket science to figure out that reading is the number one Foundation to to learning uh you know whether that the math social studies moving forward if you can't read you're going to struggle we're looking in about minutes or so of another budget meeting of where we're probably looking at a significant amount of cuts regardless if we get an override or not that I think we need to really move this in the direction to give our classroom teachers the ability you know to actually tackle the problem at hand and get these K that they need to do we've been filing them at the elementary school level at we have a new program we have a you new new you know assistant superintendent you know I know you know she is outstanding job getting you know getting this in you know going through the the strategies how this is actually going to work we've seen it the math curriculum and the data kind of coming in already vote is new it's looking good um I I think we're at that point now where I kids need it more than ever and quite friendly is going to kind of stink for Jen and Christine but the five does to make that determination then Jen Christine are going to have to figure out where we're going to find that money to do um you know and then kind go from there to me at the end of the day we need to do something and you know Texas this to Sher you know we can't just keep hiding behind we have that's that's a great thing sometimes that's actual valid excuse we're talking about foundational learning what are we doing we need to be better we need to figure this out we need to make sure our kids are getting the resources they need at those Early Elementary levels so we can see the success as the go on to Middle School location Brian touched on something but he didn't highight um and this is this is probably a secondary um secondary importance but it's mentioned briefly in the an plan as well so I think it's important um right now again Brian I this conversation the honest cul now for a while and as a human nature like you said over time the teacher start to bury how we teach it and so the the fundamental Unity of the curriculum is St to fracture and this is kind of why we get the oh you know the rigor is hard here versus there I think J you said grade toade I would actually make make the observation it can be class to class as well actually so so this is a way to kind of unify back so that press in lock step and this would kind of focus into what I just talked about earlier so so that's nice so just we're talking about how you know absolutely I think this is needed but how do we pay for this do you guys have any thoughts on how that's going to go um yes so we're hoping to have some end of years spun be able to pay for first year um about half we be able to on July yes care and I think to that degree we know we're probably fisal issues probably FAL year 25 26 27 that like once we get by year G that's going to be the struggle once we're in year two that we're still going to struggle all we know is part of the project we can plan for it we can make sure that hey you know hey might be another you know staff position that we got cut however it's giving our we're arming our teachers to have success and again if we wait regardless of what happens you know tonight or in the future if we wait we're really handcuffing our administrators to be able to roll this word certainly giving our teachers you we kind of really sticking them behind gateball because you know you can't be ccum that no one knows from September that's going to push us back probably 6 months if not longer the PD around it is not going to Su but by not making a decision to keep pushing us off and taing it and whatever we're really going to set ourselves back get another year that's another year of failure when it comes to the foundations um so Sher also asked about years two in GRE um so what we would do is um start with any retirements or resignations that come at the end of those years and now we would money aside for the materi based on that savings first so that's very from um people who that fin bank accounts so I I again I agree with what you're saying but since so many think that we're fiscally irresponsible uh for the last few years I just think that it's fiscally responsible to ask the question how we going to pay for so I don't want anyone to think that I'm against this you know I I think that our students absolutely need this deserve this but I just for in order to um I guess appear that we're fiscally responsible even though we believe we've been fiscally responsible I just wanted to ask that question and make sure we had a plan going forward so uh just just just this this is it's going to sound like it's semantics but it's not so to be very clear about this the the 38,000 this year Etc that is it's not money we're we're finding it's not money that we're creating it's it's going to be a choice right it's going to be a versus B gun versus but conversation yet so it's 30,000 we're not spending on something else just be aware of that and and this is not sound like I'm against this because I'm for it but I think it's important to be very very clear about that this is not money like when Christine says oh we're going to use school choice money well that's school choice money we would have used for something else if we if we you know if we didn't do it here so I I believe we're intending to spend School TRS down to zero this year and this is probably so yeah so just be very clear about that this is not a you know it's not a oh we'll look on the table and find 38,000 we're spending that on this if I'm not mistaken we can't vote on this tonight right so maybe our next meeting that okay all right do we have any other business I think the only thing um that I had I just wanted to mention I know information has been going out but it takes Community the 20th annual um basketball game with our teachers first in police and some high school students uh in there as well um will'll take place Friday May 3rd 7 p.m. at the high school um so if people you know can buy tickets it's going to get slow going this year um the need is absolutely there um we have definitely lost some people in our community and families could definitely feel the support and that is what ITP does for our families in so that's it so we CL this meeting anybody have anything elsee
