room excuse me are there any comments or public comments online at this time hearing none seeing none do you guys staff do you see any public comment Madam chair I do not see any public comments not online and there is none in the room thank you at this time we'll move along with the agenda to the update from the chief academic officer um good afternoon everyone and again welcome back to the start of a brand new school year um school year 25 we're excited of course we've completed one successful week um you will be hearing from us um this afternoon from Mr attorney our Deputy superintendent chief of schools that oversees of Corsa school so he's going to spend some time just updating us um on the stat on the state of our schools um but before I get started into the gist of this meeting we know each year at as our first meeting there are a couple of housekeeping that we would need to do um online joining us she's normally here in the room with us um so I'm sure she apologized she was not able to join us here in person but she is online I'm our attorney for um this Advisory Group that works very well with me and that's Lisa Crona Lisa always join us at our first meeting to where she just review um you know policy 1.0 9 or any other policy that's prevalent um to the operation of the superintendent academic advisory Council so at this time um I'm going to turn it over to Lisa for her just to give us some reminders about policy 1.09 the policy is attached to the calendar invite after we hear from um attorney Crona she will stay online to assist with the election of officers for this upcoming year so again I'll turn it over to miss to just walk us through um and highlight some of policy 1.09 good afternoon everyone um again my apologies for not being there in person um but we will go through this I believe it looks like most of you are uh old hands at this and you've served either on this committee or another District committee before this uh so I won't go too much into the details you've got the policy a copy of policy 1.09 attached to the agenda the calendar invite I ask you all even if you have read it before to please review it one more time this year uh policy 1.09 governs all advisory committees to the school board and as you know these committees are created to provide advice to the school board on a variety of matters in this case uh the academic advice advisory committee was created to provide advice to the board on it on matters of related to academic programs academic resources academic equity and school Improvement um the per board policy all members are appointed by board members all members of this committee uh as you know at the beginning of every year you have to have an organizational meeting where you uh will elect a chair and a vice chair as well as set a schedule of meeting dates at times for this school year so that's what will be coming up next after I uh conclude my short presentation here um committee chairs are subject to four consecutive years I don't know if that is an issue in this case but uh there is a possibility of an extension for one year if the chair currently has uh served for four years but that has to be done through board approval um as usual meeting agenda and minutes must be posted at least a week in advance before every meeting unless it's a special meeting in which case uh it should be at least 48 Hours again a reminder to all of you that as volunteers for this committee you're still subject to the code of ethics uh a brief explanation of the code of ethics is included in policy 109 which is again attached you're ALS also subject to the Sunshine Law uh and I'm pretty sure by now you're all familiar with it and you're subject to public records law so even though you are not District employees any public any emails or other Communications documents that you retain in your possession that are related to your work as a member of this committee are subject to the public records law additionally as you know at each meeting you should uh provide an opportunity for public participation just as you did now and there are limitations on the number of minutes uh a member of the public may speak per policy it is three minutes however it can be extended at the committee's request that's a really really brief and high level overview of this because I recognize so many of the names of of the individuals on the screen tonight and I realize that you've been through this many other times and on either this committee or other committees uh but if you have any specific questions about Port policy please 1.09 please feel free to ask me and a good time would be now does anyone have any question any questions on the floor hands online no questions Madam chair I do not see any um hands on the line Miss Carmona there is no questions great so the next order of business would be your election of officers for this school year the chair and vice chair yes ma'am at this time the election of officers um nomination for the election of officers is open do we have any nominations for chair we'll start with chair can I Nom you madam chair I'll run the nomination I'll run the nomination thank you um at this time um okay um just give me a minute Miss Mendez um we do have a hand raise so at this time thank you Gabriel I think Gabriel you were to nominate myself okay thank you Laura Feldman has nominated herself I'll decline the nomination and allow Laura to Ser um take the nomination thank you is there any additional um I don't see any additional hands at this time is there this is the last call for nomination for chair at this time the nomination for chair has closed the nomination has closed with um Mrs Menendez had nominated Miss postal Miss postal has declined the nomination our chair will be for school year 25 will be Laura Feldman and Laura Felman nominated herself and unopposed um with no objection so Laura um will be our chair for fy2 thank you very much thank you at this I'm looking forward to working with continuing to work with youa in the capacity Che at this time the floor is open for vice chair are there any nominations for a vice chair um I'll be Vice chair I put my name in the in the Hat um Charelle are you able to turn your camera on um for the vote anytime we're doing business and I understand if you can I'll talk about that in a little bit and I know I think Lisa is still on so cherelle that's you correct Charelle is nominating herself for vice chair thank you m Sherelle okay thank you is there any other nomination for vice chair well y'all are a good group um well relaxed um congratulations um Miss Sherelle Goldman would be our vice chair for school year 25 she's nominated um herself nomination um no objection I'm cherelle I'm looking forward to working with you as Vice chair so welcome to you and to Laura thank you ladies both for stepping up to help us lead problem um so I'm now I'm going to um go in um to just do a little bit of um housekeeping before we move forward um and then of course coming into the housekeeping will be some of my updates um but what I'm going to ask um I know we do need to and I know the hybrid model works the hybrid really helps us able to um being able to continue and have our meetings um more efficient and I'll say efficient and effective I'll I'll say that right but when we're having to do the hybrid meeting um and I'm just asking that if we can make certain that we're in a place to where we could have our cameras on unless it's an extenda circumstances of course if you're driving or what have you do not turn your camera on you're going to pay attention to the road we just love having you on to being able to provide some feedback to us and the reason I said that it's cuz we are conducting business and of course when we're voting or anything um you know we we just need to make certain that um you know we are seeing who's there and what have you the second I'm going to ask and this will be for um this is going to be for a discussion and and I guess I will ask um I will Laura I would like to put this and I could put it as an agenda item for um next meeting to where we will have time to think about it is that I would like for us we have I we know that we meet the second Monday of each month but I would like to put on as an agenda item for next month is that when we look at our calendar if we can decide the meetings that will be virtual and in person to where we can come you understand what I'm saying to where even if we rotate every month to where one meeting is hybrid and the next meeting you know we try to get everyone in person um again I know the virtual um it is good um it's effective it's efficient but I want to see y'all I want to it just it's a difference when we're in the room and when we are having those deep deep deep deep deep conversations so can is it okay to add that as a discussion item to talk about the I think that's a great idea yes it's a great idea okay thank you so I just wanted that was part of my comment it was weighing on my heart um so I just wanted to put it as part of my comments in the beginning um because I want to see y'all in person I just I love it um and y'all have been amazing and now that we're going I'm going to go into the um I'm going to go into some of my updates but again Mr attorney will have a lot of it but we did not meet in May because there was just a lot of conflicting um schedules and things going on as it pertains to the end of the year activities um graduations and everything so I do appreciate you all understanding that and we had already met our meeting quota for the year so with that we've had um you know successful graduations at all of our schools um We've ran um a successful summer program um we had several summer programs going on over the summer and um alongside with that um you're going to hear in regards to you know our successful graduations the summer learning that have taken place over the summer and the work that we have continued to do and to prepare for you're going to hear some of that um what have some of that work looked like that the team has been involved in over the summer through Mr attorney's presentation because he'll be talking about the state of school um so before do so that I would not have to come back um to give an update what we're doing right now am in the midst of an Ela adoption um that's my world right now we just completed um our Ela adoption for K12 I will be meeting with Mr attorney tomorrow we have our one-on-one tomorrow I'm going to be sharing with him in regards to um the recommendations from the Committees and then what we will be sending out to schools to review and so forth and part of the ELA adoption um that we're talking about along on with the core we will also part of that adoption was also K3 intervention so we'll be able to definitely make certain that I keep you all updated in a breast as I possibly could as we move through this adoption cycle Mr Nolan is not with us um this evening he could not be with us but he will be joining us like he has been in the past um but he wanted to me to share with you that the process that we used last year as it pertains to um classroom librar and you know any materials on those books that may individuals may want to include in their classroom libraries that he will send back through the committee and where you all have reviewed like you did last year we will be utilizing that same process um he said it worked very well um it's just that um if you reviewed it's just going to be important that we collect the data so if you reviewed it and you have no feedback if you would just say I reviewed it everything looks good there are no feedback but then we've had instance where you reviewed and you had some clarifying questions and you reached out to Nolan which is good he will talk more about that process next month also what you will hear from him next month is that we are now as things are beginning to settle down as it pertains to classroom libraries instruction materials and so forth we're getting more requests um you know from various um published authors that's wanting to um wanting their materials to be vetted or wanted to be included in our library media centers or in classroom libraries so what we have done in working with Mr tney we've created a standard response to those individuals and what that process is going to look like um for their materials to be reviewed because we have done well here in Palm Beach and we just want to make certain that we are holding our systems tight to where that there is no hiccup in staying within statue and um I think that's you know that will be it for me I mean we had a successful opening a lot of the data pieces I'm not going to steal the Thunder From Mr attorney um but we want to just share with you the successes from this past year we've had some big wins and we also recognize that we have um some growth opportunities so we're just excited about the progress that are being made but we are you know we also understand that there are opportunities for growth and you're going to hear about opportunities for growth the successes and some of those shifts that we are making to address some of those growth opportunities to our part Madam chair that's it for me as a quick update got a yes this a hand up um Miss um Rachel fishberg yes I was wondering um you said that you would um had the ELA adoptions and that you would keep us AB breast are you not able to tell us what is most likely being chosen no I cannot because we have not notified the Publishers yet so right now I have the you know I have the data just ended last week and so now the next step is for me to share um to share the results from the committee with Miss attorney and Leadership um we look at those you know we measure everything up with the score sheets we are preparing the bulletin to go out to schools to where the materials will be shipped to schools where all teachers will have an opportunity to review and to provide their feedback but before I share anything out in terms of public we must notify the Publishers in regards to those um that are being considered whether it's you know first second third we need to notify the Publishers and will the public have any um opportunity to speak out about it or is it just the reviewers um and the in the we had um you know when we did the instruction materials adoption you know we have to do public notice that the adoption is taking place so we've done the um you know we did the ad we ran through the whole process and the public had an opportunity you know to go there to messen through the adoption cycle through that process um to review those materials and be a part of that so we followed the process um but again um go ahead are there are is there any way for you to view now what what um Publications were um being being offered or being looked at is there any way to look at that now or is that uh closed um right now that is um that is closed because right now we're in the middle of the cycle so we have to follow through with that process um again Nolan is not here I make he's definitely going to be here next I mean at our next meeting we'll still be going through the process because we're not even shipping out to schools um until I think the second week of September so he will be able to provide you more clarity in regards to exactly what that process look like because I'm giving you the high level um of it but noan will be able to talk more about it and how often do we do the ELA adoption because I just felt like we just adopted Benchmark or was that like I think it's um I think it's five years but it's the state adoption cycle so sometimes their cycle is a little off or they may have shift things around um based on the standards and we did we did it I think it was in 2019 or 2020 I cannot remember the exact year but this is all through the state we don't come own adoption cycle thank you for the information I appreciate you're welcome great questions do appreciate it so um yes I'm sorry question just to just to be clear so this is the adoption of materials is there any um other programs besides uh that are being considered at this time or is it just solely on the materials it's the core instructional materials for ELA the core instructional materials just like this um like this year FY 25 right now we last year this time we started the process for science so all last year it was science and we completed our science adoption and we always wait we do our adoption but we do not purchase anything until the state has released their um their adoption their approval list and so once the state released their approval list we match it up in terms of what came out from our committees and from our teachers then we make our purchase and so we've um so this year for fy2 our teachers and students have brand new science materials k12 and the reason that we do it that way is that when the state release say when they released their state adoption for science there were a few items um like we said we had our first choice we had our first and second choice the First Choice the state may have had as needing attention um and I'll say second choice was approved but then we waited because you will always want your first choice because the state will provide feedback and if the publisher goes back and and take the feedback and make those changes and the state then turns them green as fully acceptable then of course we're going to go with our first choice so that's why we always wait on the state adoption list to come out so we get ahead we start early so when the state released their list we are ready to go to where we can make certain that we have instructional materials in the hands of our students on the first day a prime example right now is what held up over the summer because the state was a little behind is biology biology um of course needed to have made some changes well it was a little late once they got approval but our team our students they do have their instructional materials they have the digital the textbook is actually in route but they do have their instructional materials you you I'm making sense um you had mentioned something about the first or second week of September that the materials will be out is that I think it's the second week of September we'll be sending out samples to the schools to where teachers have an opportunity to review and provide their feedback all the teachers because the committee consists of Select teachers um you know teachers sign up to serve on the adoption committee and so now that those teachers have served with the lay persons and so forth now all teachers all teachers districtwide ELA teachers will have an opportunity to review the in review the items that are up for consideration and provide their feedback and done I'm sorry this is going to be given to them to the teachers before giving to the students oh absolutely no doesn't even go to the students it goes to the teachers to give feedback and then once the teachers and everyone provide their feedback then the committee then comes back together we look at all the feedback and then we create the list to share with leadership in terms of what feedback we receive from the teachers and the ranking from first second and third we wait on the state to release their adoption list and then we make our purchase so this is not for this year this is for next year believe it or not next year it just takes an entire year I was just making sure that there wasn't going to be any type of delay oh no no this is for next year it takes an entire year for an adoption yes I'm I'm sorry um Miss postal not a problem um so my question what or it's more of a comment than a question so with I know Nolan is not here um but there was a questions um that I have had in the community as it relates to the review of the books um or the literacy this committee is responsible for the library or classroom which one you do both we do both right because any purchase that we make are they're considering they upload it to the site upload it where it has to be uploaded I think 30 days or what have you and those are the materials that if they had not already been vetted or reviewed by library media correct then those are the materials that you're I just wanted to that's what I thought but there was a and we haven't this particular committee have not re have not you know put any books up for um consideration AB that I'm aware of however in the July board meeting there was a from the superintendent specifically there was a challenge or the superintendent had um I don't remember exactly three books correct challenge so I understand the process you know very well with what the superintendent did my um or I guess my comment would be in the future would this committee or would the committee because it's AAC would we be previewed to that so that when we're in the community and we're having these conversations and saying this committee did not do this that and the third and someone have read the agenda that's coming up and we're not aware of you know anything that the superintendent is doing being this Ambassador what we probably could do just for this committee um is to come back and just to review those policies 8.12 8.125 8122 and it's sad that I know them by numbers there are three policies that binds library media services and that's where the superintendent objection comes in right so I think if we explain those policies just refresh this this board to those policies so if that comes up you would just make reference that this is tied to policy 8122 okay you understand what I'm saying that's you know I it's not in the scope of the work that we do however just when it first hit us I was like I don't know I'm not aware of any objections that brought forth by this I will stick to policy so Madame chair um Madame chair again you know maybe um it will be that time you know for us to just come back and maybe just talk about those three policies as it pertains to library media and classroom materials um since this committee helps with the vetting to that point but I will leave that up to Madam chair Vice chair I'm hoping at the end of this meeting we can go over some topics for future meetings and we can keep that in mind and the committee can make decision as to what they would like to yes focus on thank you and so that again that will do it for um my portion I said it was brief and what happened to brief Ed is over here he's probably saying you said brief so at this time um I'm excited to turn it over and to have Mr tney to um to join us so I'm going to and look and I'm just and I'm clicking on everything here and I'm going to turn it over to miss attorney at this time okay our Deputy superintendent chief of schools thank you Dr Sheffield a pleasure to be with everyone this evening I appreciate the invitation nice to see you both on the screen and face to face so I'm going to go over some of our high highlights from the academic performance for this year we're going to talk about some of the things we've done as a result in order to continue to improve uh you know our best practices and then we alluded to the summer school and I see legislation updates on there we can speak to that briefly as well so to start off we you probably heard in the news but we did get an A rating as a school district so we are pleased and proud of the students the staff the schools we're very very pleased with that and Dr Sheffield alluded to it we're not going to be satisfied until every student is forming to the best of his or her ability so we recognize still work to be done but we are very pleased to have an a rating and I'll I'll at the next slide kind of address why it was so much more challenging this year than other years we're going to look at a big picture comparison to some of the urban 7 we're not going to go through all the data because for the constraints of time we would just be here all night and I do just want to assure this group this group that we look at the performance of all of our students including groups of students by grade High Learning gain low 25 learning gain so we are doing that as well we saw everybody generally progress along the same lines and at the same Pace but we do look to that level of specificity and then once again the academic updates what are we doing as a result of this data I mentioned that that it was a harder a to earn this year than previously because for as long as I can recall 62% of the points was an a for elementary schools middle schools high schools as well as districts the state raised the thresholds you can see on the right half of this screen for middle schools high schools combination and districts to 64% for an a 57% for a b and then you can read that slide there so the a was harder earned this year for the district for any Middle High School and combination School making it kind of that much more better feeling when that did come in you can see the percent of District operated A and B schools in the district were 67% this year and that is the highest for the past nine years or so once again recognizing those a and Bs are higher at high school middle school and elementary school so once again we are grateful of the hard work of the student staff and the schools some of the highlights 113 District operated Schools rated A or B significantly higher than last year 74% of our high schools where A or B 58% of our middle schools and then 68 % of our elementary schools up 15% so significant improvements across the whole system we had the highest percentage of a-rated middle schools among the seven large urban districts in the state we had the second highest percentage of a-rated high schools and tied with orange for the second rated for combination schools some of the highlights algebra was a plus 11 growth which was first among Urban seven uh the second was nine and then after that was six so we we really performed well in algebra after a lot of interventions by the academic team last year our 3 to 10 Ela if we add all those together a very very large denominator up five which beat the state and was tied for second among large Urban and then math up four tied with the second with the uh tied for second again with the large Urban tide for the state we're going to mention the Glades region overall just had a we said un level of student achievement that really is the way to word it the glazes just did great across the whole Community we're very grateful and proud of the work done there so with the Glades did they at all increase to an a b or c school did they do any of that yeah they did basically all of that they had no no D's no FS they had three b's so there really wasn't a way we could look at it where we wouldn't say over the last 25 years this was either as good or better than it's been done so just ACR the board very proud we had three Bs we had some very close to a b before we move on to that just a quick question were there particular programs that you think that can be pointed to for that um wonderful increase that you saw in achievement there I would credit less to programs and more to just sustain cemic quality instruction with real really high quality monitoring from the school-based administrator and then the regional office Dr mcer Dr Dr Mo or uh Miss Angela Mo just did an outstanding job so I think it was more about the instruction the monitoring and just the culture they create out there to for the students than any individual program would you you agree absolutely you know I yes I didn't think you would disagree with that that's wonderful to hear that was it was a nice it was a nice day for them for all of us really two schools went up two letter grades You Don't See that that doesn't even happen every year that those are that's just big so we're going to have those principles in on Wednesday to honor them and we had seven schools improve their letter grade to something they had not seen the last decade so you can see the schools there as well so we're proud of all these Schools staff and students Sim to Trails wow great absolutely like that yeah you you'd see a number of really hardworking communities that saw it payoff yeah definitely great this is 3 to 10 combined so all the students in third through 10th this is the state and then the urban seven districts there's two columns with the word rank in it those are out highlighted in blue the fourth column fiscal year 24 rank is where the district ranked just on performance so we we came in at 54% for Combined 3 to 10 the highest in the state was 56 now we have us ranked second this is traditionally how we do it but I just want to point out so no one thinks we're being funny with any numbers there were ties here there always are so if you're tied for first you're ranked you're all ranked first and then we come in second place at 54% but I don't want anybody to think well you should have ranked yourself fourth that's a that's an argument on rank this is how we traditionally do it but I just want to point that out I'm gonna take the second yeah that was that was my point too we made the slide so that's where we live yeah yeah we're second absolutely that's how I see it the the rightmost column is the growth so that the growth is the difference between fiscal year 23 and fiscal year 24 we came in plus five that's higher than the state that's tied for second and the way that we're outlining it with pelis up six and then us plus two and then you can see the rest of the district so a strong performance at 3 to 10 Ela okay is 3 to eight math combined it is the same structure and format for the cell States up top we went last year two years ago 51 last year 55 so our ranking overall is third again with some ties and our growth two years ago to last year of plus4 is tied for second place I want to put alra on there we we excuse me we listed as a highlight and it was a very strong performance the day after algebra numbers came in two years ago Dr Sheffield met with her team on how we are going to revamp some of that curriculum spend a little more time on some of the benchmarks reorder some of them so team put a lot of effort into kind of revamping how we teach algebra and we were really pleased when that paid off so you could see 47 to 58 we're ranked second overall in the state and then with our difference plus 11 that's number one and if you look the next one was plus n and then after that plus4 so we just really had a very nice performance for algebra and I do want to credit Dr Sheffield and the team because the day after the numbers came in last year they kind of turned two on that and obviously paid off it's good it takes a village it does take a village and that is a good lead into this slide because this is learning gains low 25 learning gains for ELA and for math those So Below 25 that's the students that to whom we owe the most debt and this is kind of an organizational effort we pushed out of this building we probably mentioned it last year 90 people three times per week a lot of Dr Sheffield's team went out out to schools on the second half of that year from January through May and they worked with the students who needed the most work so these rankings here rank three rank six rank seven rank nine that is not of the urban 7 that's of 67 districts in the State of Florida and we came in third on learning gains and then these numbers here 679 so I count that as an organizational success appreciate everybody who went out to schools to support those students and just the interest of being transparent these rankings are the same there are some ties involved in that where anybody to go and look so there are ties but we're pleased with the performance there and pleased with uh you know pleased with the students who did so well this year definitely definitely and then this is what we're going to do in order to better serve our students this year than last year dfield cly you know jump in this is a lot of the work of your team jump in if you'd like a lot of this is going to be around professionally developing our adults so this first including in the walkthroughs which is a tool to help school-based administrators effectively evaluate the the instruction in the classroom these achievement level descriptors are designed to say a student who is a level four above proficiency should be able to do this or should be working on this and this is in order to help school-based administrators Elevate the instruction in the classroom so that we're not teaching down to a level one we are elevating students to Beyond proficiency this so this should be particularly helpful this year we made some adjustments to the assessments that we did really did a nice job last year giving these and monitoring them but there was some adjustments made on on the assessments and then also to ensure that the students were regularly practicing the mechanics of answering the questions on the computer not taking advant not taking for granted that they know how to drag and drop or multi- select or all those types of things still tremendous focus on the K to 5 literacy and helping the the youngest students learn to read as soon as possible our transition to kindergarten program has been successful we're continuing to work on that and then working to again develop the teachers to help the youngest students that we have read better so we have a good partnership with lassinger that is growing each year we're supporting 59 schools you see the work professional learning here again once again to to make the teachers more effective the assistant principles the principles the people in this building the people sitting at this table all the more effective so that's kind of our message for the year and then cadres contact clinics are once again getting teachers together monthly in order to teach them the full intent rigor of the standard you know train the trainer model to go back to their schools and once again Elevate all the teachers understanding of the standards and benchmarks and improve their ability to instruct around them can we go back to the UF ler centers you said they're in 59 schools um will they be are they being expanded further than that this year and and I think you mentioned that they were but how many schools are you looking to roll that out into this year it started with nine two years ago was very well received increased probably three years ago increased two years ago to I forget the number in between the nine and now we're up to 59 so that has been 30 that's what it was 9 to 31 to 59 so we are expanding that and we have a finite ability to work directly with the University of Florida but we're having a train the trainer model where we're getting our staff members trained and then they can go and continue this training for our our schools here so every kind of group or portfolio of schools has last Ander trained Specialists involved and then we have 59 in this cohort with the goal of getting everyone in there in the next couple of years okay so now that you have the 59 you're using more of a train the trainer kind of mode and that's how it will be expanded instead of actually having more schools directly working with UF is that what I'm understanding exactly got it thank you and then just the last thing on the early literacy we were we really focused on Phonics for this year we purchased couple programs to specifically assist with phonic instruction youly University of Florida fundations and then estra for dual language schools so the K to2 classrooms will dedicate 20 to 30 minutes each day specifically working on Phonics and support of the science of reading and working on elevating the the literacy rates among our K to2 students so that when they hit third grade and Beyond they're that much more prepared to comprehend right away and not continually struggle with things they would have ideally learned at an earlier time okay that's the conclusion on our academic updates I see that Erica frisber has a question yes hi that's my job name I'm Rachel sorry it's okay I I don't know how to change the name I need to figure that out um so my question to you is what's the difference between the youly and the UF lassinger centers I'm just curious the lenger focus is more on small group instruction and it is more pedagogy for teachers to teach teachers how to teach reading and once again I'm just going to Dr Sheffield read I mean this her ER is back so please feel free to that um with youf Rachel it's all around as Miss attorney indicated is around small group instruction and teaching teachers the proper way of teaching small group instruction in terms of differentiating um and so forth around the signs of reading um youly foundations of course is that's a process in terms of teaching teachers um how to properly teach and dig down with phonics those foundational skills that our students must get as part of the reading process that I know you very much familiar with yeah no I'm very familiar with youly I did I've never honest I've never heard of uly lenger Center but that's just my own ignorance yes so my other question is um I know two years ago we invested money in Reading recovery are we still um funding that or has that um project been defunct are we still doing that in some schools reading recovery Rachel if you remembered um when we had the Esser dollars um that was part of the student academic support plan so you know s those funds and those individuals have been suited is no more s dollars so those individuals have been reallocated back into school sites okay so we're no longer doing reading recovery at the schools we do have reading recovery at select schools that are continuing with the reading recovery but it's not at the extent to where it was when we had access to those erra dollars one thing that I would like um to say and you know is that I said this before but I I've actually dealt in more research reading recovery has been proven to be uneffective and it's very done in very very few school districts now because they find the gains made shortly because they're not phonics based so the kids are just learning whole words and are not um able to decode so you know I'm really hoping we can take those dollars and bundle them into getting all the schools using you know youly the linger Center you know all those um great um philosophies that University of Florida is putting forth and giving you know our school district I just feel that we're wasting valuable dollars paying we're not okay all of our elementary schools will have foundations are youly so none of them are without foundations and are youly one of the other right the reading recovery of course those students that are participating in Reading recovery which we know is is the process those students will still have access and they should to your point in regards to the need for those explicit phonics instruction so I I hear what you were saying um but I I just wanted to assure you that if they're participating in a reading recovery program that those students our schools were being left out of having access to foundation and are youly yes but because that you know it's we only have six hours in a school day and reading recovery takes at least a half an hour daily you you're taking valuable time away from a student with a program that has been proven to be ineffective in the long run there are multiple studies out there and it's been discontinued so I'm really hoping someone could evaluate that and pull that funding from that because the kids shouldn't be spinning their wheels they might look like they're making progress but they're not really learning how to read and it's been shown time and time again in in um most school districts very few school districts are using it now and the and also this there were legislation that banded that baned in our Florida legislation that b bans the uh the one where you look for the text it's called the queuing method anding the Fe queing and reading recovery does use that so and it's banned in our legislation so I don't know why we're still using it when Florida State legislation says we shouldn't you know I just I have to assure I have to assure you we are not using the three curing system when that came out there were some revamping that we had to do um within not just with reading recovery but also there with Benchmark and we work with Benchmark because that's our core so of course in working with them we taken the three curing out and we had to make those adjustments there but I hear you loud and clear okay thank you make that point thank you just on we're very familiar with the research that you're referencing and and we and it was really Dr Sheffield's team talked to every Elementary School in the district this year for the K to2 teachers what phonics based program do you want and they had a choice between youly and fundations two high quality ones we have one for dual language as well we bought it we trained the teachers over the summer we've trained the principles to date and then we have a rotation in the upcoming Leadership Summit to continue to develop our principles on how they should see explicit phonic instruction in the classroom so we hear you and and we've made I mean we had a phonics based Benchmark already program but we have put a lot of time money and effort into refining our ability to teach phonics in the K to2 grades to that point Thank you Mr attorney to that point and you've been hitting it a lot in your slides around the being intentional around enhancing the instructional pedagogy but not just of our teachers but also of you know of all of the leaders particularly um the district office staff the curriculum team a select group of all of my Ela um Ela team members along with myself um some from ESC some other coaches and so forth we're actually going to do the full day of youly training here on Friday because we are a firm believer for us to be able to go in and provide support to our teachers and that's going to have that tremendous impact on our students we need to make certain that we are right there alongside with our teachers enhancing our instructional pedagogy to where we are all on the same page because the learning doesn't stop I don't care if you're not a teacher I don't care who you principal or whomever the learning does not stop so we are being very intentional making certain that just as intentional as we are with our teachers we are doing that with our principles whom are instructional leaders myself along with the curriculum team the regional office team principal supervisors so I think cherelle I think you said it it's um it's a team effort and I can assure you we realize it is all hands on debt definitely that's great to hear thank you thank you I'm happy that we're we're going this way and I I do think you're gonna see a huge Improvement because I know personally and from a lot of kids I've seen that intense and phonics is the only way they're going to learn to read so thank you that's very exciting um Laura I think that that will of course that will do it for Mr attorney and the academic update um and the state of schools unless they are um some additional questions I mean we just wanted to you know this meeting before we get started planning for the upcoming year we like to share in regards to where we are as a district let you take that um and then hear in terms of what's working what's not working and those adjustments that we would make and hopefully that will help with the conversation around some of our next um disc discussion points you know in terms of agenda items so I'll turn it back over to you madam chair thank you thank you and thank you for the for the presentations and for the great conversation and information I uh especially appreciated um the information that we had towards the end giving us um the plans for this upcoming year as you mentioned and um which leads into as you mentioned the the uh topics of what we want to cover within the academic advisory committees in the upcoming so I would like to ask everyone if um you could please go ahead and raise your hand if you have an idea of topic that you'd like to discuss and then once everyone else goes I have a few as well chair point of order yes or just just a question I guess um because Miss Carmona I know we voted on the academic advisory committee calendar but she shared that that had to do be done every year are we doing this this again this meeting given that we have a new chair and may have new people on the committee we had already established the calendar and we did discuss that at this meeting we would um just revisit again and approve the calendar at this meeting I believe it was mentioned oh sorry go ahead okay no I think I am I guess I'm trying to follow because what I ask in my opening is that for our next meeting if we can discuss if we have our meeting dates if we can discuss the meeting formats for the next meeting so then I don't know if we want we have the calendar dates here yes but I don't think and if I don't know if Lisa is still on or not but I don't see to where it will hinder Us in terms of pulling the calendar to add to the next agenda um to where we are discussing our meeting dates and we know it's the second Monday but at the meeting dates and then the model if the body would entertain can we is there any objection to make a motion today because we have already had the we already have the calendar before us we've discussed the calendar prior to I would like to make a motion um where we can entertain the conversation regarding alternate meeting dates you know if we're going to be in person you know because now you're delay if we decide to wait till September now we're delaying October when you know we're going to meet in person when we're going to meet online so if possible today um seeing that we're a little ahead of time on with the time I would like to make a motion to approve um or I would like to make a motion to entertain the conversation regarding um where we would meet okay before your motion um I think attorney attorney has raised hand raised so if you would please go hi yes uh no I had not realized that you had already approved those meeting dates I thought they were on the agenda for approval if the meeting dates were already approved at an earlier meeting or a meeting last year then uh you should be good to go with those uh you can of course uh to change the format or to change uh the way in which your meetings are going to be conducted moving forward for example um whether some meetings will be in person and others will be hybrid I would recommend that you notice that as an agenda item for the next publicly noticed meeting uh because that was not on the agenda for tonight's meeting and that's the motion that I I guess we can make that motion that was the point of order to make a motion but I mean we can move it to the next meeting but the point of order was to make that motion so at this time I make a motion to um discuss trying to think of the wording to discuss our meeting format for the 2425 school year is your motion to discuss that tonight or to discuss it at our next meeting make a motion to discuss the Mee in format for the academic advisory committee um 242 school year at the September meeting do we have a second for this motion have a second we don't have a motion well but I I don't understand you um so you're if we don't discuss it in September we discuss it today no I believe what what Charmaine is trying to make more official is that we will add to the agenda for our next meeting if this motion passes a discussion about the meeting formats and setting that up so just as Dr Sheffield had um requested and mentioned at the beginning of the meeting this is formalizing that so we could have a thank you so much um any discussion hearing and seeing none um all in favor please there's discussion or there's a oh there is oh is there any discussion no he did he didn't realize it was second okay thank you um so hearing no discussion requests um and all in favor please raise your hand or say I I I I any oppos motion carries thank you very much we will have this uh discussion item on our next agenda okay so speaking of our next agenda if you could raise your hand um and we can go ahead and start talking about other topics we would like to cover for this upcoming year so um Rachel I saw that you had your hand raised uh did you still want to say anything Madam chair we did before we continue at the meeting we did have I was looking for a point to where we we paused we did have a member um to join us from the public so I don't know if you want that um individual to introduce themselves oh that would be great Roxy cero can you unmute and introduce yourself please Hi how are you I'm Roxy clo I am U my daughter goes to Wellington um Landing and I just moved to Florida from New York welcome thank you thank you thanks for joining us thank you so um if you join us again uh there there is a time for public comment towards the beginning of our meetings um if there is something that you wanted to contributors say there's a time limit of 3 minutes for speaking but um you're welcome to come and share with us something if you if you feel the if you so choose to do so at our next meeting so but thank you for coming in and showing interest and again welcome to Florida thank you I appreciate it okay um any we'll go back to the other question of agenda items anybody has does anyone else have any other items that they would like to discuss in upcoming meetings this is not necessarily set for the next meeting but at any time during this next school year I do um and I think Dr shef will have her hands up so I'll go ahead and let you because you may say something that I okay Dr Sheffield please um I'm sorry madam chair I was just going to offer and I can't I'm sitting here thinking because I know you heard a lot around the work that we're doing um around K2 I'm in the University of Florida with lassinger I'm not not sure if this committee um if you would like for me to have that team that's leading up that work um to come forth and provide you with um an explicit overview in terms of what that works look like as we are um being intentional around K K2 literacy and those foundational skills because that's where it starts yes we would like that yes I think that would be a good idea uh Rachel you have your hand raised I was just gonna say I would like that too okay so I think that's the a great idea um Madam chair just have my hands up when you get a chance thank you it's hard to say when you're in the room and I'm not so I apologize so Miss Coal yes um I would like this share at some point earlier in the year to discuss update on t uh t2k the transition to kindergarten um probably later on September October time frame just to see where we are with that program and um how the roll out is if that's okay okay giving them time to roll out the program I would say more October since VPK I believe start September um for the most part so maybe in October in the October meeting an update of how that looks like instead of a September okay let's uh instead of putting dates to things let's see what else comes up um but thank you added that down uh Miss Mendes I see your hand is raised yes thank you um couple of items I would like for us to address one is uh when we look at the the growth I mean I'm so proud of the district now the the difference they made it's amazing now I think we it's good to at the data as a whole but also we should look into who are the students who are still um not progressing as much what schools are the schools that are not doing so well so a little bit more detail in terms of um who are the schools and the students that need more support I think we we should break down um the data a little bit more to see by um different demographics and and to see by different schools in terms of some this usually social economic status of of the school and the area um determines a lot the achievement of the students and and the other thing I think we we should um address is what is the district doing about um about artificial intelligence what are I mean the students are using it and the teachers you know some teachers can pretend that students are not using it but that's not true um how is the district equipping the teachers uh not only it's not about um identifying the use of AI gen generative AI is mostly being more practive and more positive in the sense of how are we helping the students use it in a way that is ethical and it's going to be productive for them but that will still let them learn because it's it's a serious issue so i' like to address that at some point Thank you and um we did hear a presentation about that very topic and included um information about career preparation within AI which is very crucial these days um and we did hear that towards the end of last year it might have been the April meeting if I recall is that presentation still available it was the April 8th meeting it's actually reflected in the Mee and minutes um so perhaps later in the year it might be appropriate to hear an update regarding that yes um because then we can follow from one to the other but for more information uh you might find it helpful to go back and listen to the meeting from April 8th because that does go over a lot of um what you were talking about and it was only a few months ago and I assume that all of the programs that we talked about in April are still in place is that correct Dr Sheffield it is um the difference with Kingo is that and I think we did talk about in April that this year we've rolled it out um to all of our secondary schools and we had some teachers that came and work with curriculum and actually writing some of those um lesson pointers in terms of Ty it to the scope and how they could appropriately use the robot um through AI to get some assistance and so forth so we've done a lot of training with that over the summer for teachers to make certain that our students know how to use it properly being intentional to where it's connected to the scope and lessons terrific okay um does anybody else have anything I actually have to I was trying to hold them and allow people to have their conversations um I understand I'm holding my list so go ahead yeah I'll say the last two um update on absenteeism where we at um early on in the year and updates on um or at least quarterly updates if we could on third grade performance and identifying um students that are at risk for uh a level one on the test so those are the my three thank you okay writing it down hold on okay um and Rachel I see your hand raised I I think we should do this every year um legislative updates and how they're going to affect uh curriculum and instructional methodologies I think that makes a lot of sense the legislative session this year I believe starts in March so um that those updates would be probably closer to there are committee weeks before then but there some of those updates would need to be later in the year so I have a couple of U go ahead Rachel you're just curious don't some of the legislative updates go into effect this year um we had some yes yes I think laa she may be referencing the legislative pieces that went into effect come July one um got it yes we could do both I mean I think it's important but we won't you know we don't really know until the legislative system is over with you know what is new and we might not be meeting by then I think they usually decide you know probably April M you know April May June so got it okay so yes I did put it down though on the list do you have something else okay um I'm hoping we can um get an overview of what pilot projects are planned for this year and for next year and um more information about those pilot projects that's one item um and um having discussed with um School of remember Marsh Andrews um for some topics of which she was very interested in hearing about was the implementation of Innovations and um how we are um moving student achievement for all students and this all ties into um what our how we're comparing and which we did get some tonight of uh comparisons with the other large Urban school districts um in Florida but also how we are comparing and either imitating or leading in Innovations um with other school districts and um something we've touched on but I'm in another item that we've touched on in the past but the slightly different approach is that we do have some opportunity gaps in uh for accessing Advanced coursework especially in math and science across our district and where in our past discussions we've identified that yes there are gaps but my question at this point and um is how have those gaps changed over time what are we doing to address them what process have we found to be more effective in reducing those gaps in Access so that we because we can do this for analysis over the last 6 8 10 years to take a look at which high schools have access to classes for ex students have access to classes for example like AP Computer Science a which is very important for those students who are going to then be going into the AI field because they're going to want to get a computer science degree but we don't have that offered across the board at all our schools um and where I know in The Glades we do have uh students can take classes through prom Leach State College um it's not the same as sitting in a classroom with your peers learning in AP class and um getting that benefit from being in the AP class and being able to use that information in your future career uh Reginal I see that your hand is raised or maybe not okay um so I'm hoping that we can spend some time talking about that and perhaps how we can use some of um various Innovations to address those opportunity gaps that we have um there's been also another topic that we've talked about or touched on here or there over the last few years um it's just been usually in a side mention we have implemented the amp program for math advancement which is great and I think it's been quite successful from everything I've heard but I think that it would be great if we took a look at broadening that to other subjects for example for English science and social studies we have students who I'm sure Eng gifted in each or all of those and those students um it would be wonderful to give those students the opportunity for advancement as well and um as well uh Marsh Andrew was also very interested in hearing about more advanced courses um from the elementary school level on up which ties into that my question about the amp program as well I think she started with that and I asked about the amp program um so those are the other topics that I'm hoping so now we have a very long list so of this list Dr Sheffield um which items do you think would be work best to include in the September meeting in terms of Staff schedule and time to create the presentation um for September um because we're at the start of the you know the start of the year and we are I would really say the lassinger because it is hard in the heart of where we're working directly with the teachers and students so I said the I would like to look at the K2 lassinger and talk about just in terms of what we're we'll talk about that piece but we'll talk about K5 Al together okay I think um does every does that work for everybody on the committee if you could raise your hand yes wonderful okay and I think that will take up the whole meeting I think we'll probably have many questions so uh I thank you in advance for your patience with all of our questions okay and then it will take up a large part of your meeting because especially if we're going to talk about linger and what that work looks like and the work that we've done in the schools that are involved then you're probably going to get into talking around what we're doing with foundations and you fly as well great and do you think we might have time for an update as to what's being implemented this year due to legislative changes I don't think so not with this if we want to really yes I F it was worth asking so okay so I think we should leave it at that and then um in during that meeting we can take a look at this list that we now have created and figure out what we will talk about in October does that sound good to everybody I'm seeing head nods so thank you so then for the next meeting l so that I'm correct so for the next meeting the agenda I'm we'll have the staff we're going to be working on the lassinger and around um the lassinger piece and then you're going to hear about foundations you you fly we're just going to talk through there but we're also going to add the agenda item around the calendar in the meeting format correct that's correct both items will be on there yes okay and Randy I see that your hand is raised yes I just have a quick question and I don't think it needs to be an agenda item per se um but maybe an update on the new legislation con um concern um concerning chaplain and schools volunteer chaplain in in the schools yes and are we implementing that and how are we implementing that I just saw today that one school district put it on hold yes I saw that earlier as well okay so that would certainly make sense to bring up as well thank you okay um does anybody else have anything that they want to add to the list Madam chair I Charmaine I don't have anything to bring to the list but I do I would say that um with items that you know we bring to the list I just want to make sure that they're gerain to the topic at hand and the responsibility of the academic advisory committee um our scope of work but also I wanted to share like there are some things like the legislative updates um I while I appreciate that I don't think I personally would recommend that we get a list of the legislative updates in through email and if there is something specific that engage the committee or the body um that they're interested in talking about then we can do a little a deeper dive through staff but sometimes we have these presentations and their presentations so I just want to make sure we're we're you know um utilizing the best use of our times and being effective in this um in the time that we use that we come here for two hours thank you um Dr Sheffield is it possible for us to receive a by email a legislative update about what the changes are and whether we will be implementing programs for example that would I was asked about before I don't think we realize how many legislative updates we are making reference to um I can update you on you know those that are having like tremendous impact I mean because we keep a running list like we've already closed out for school year 24 let me look at the list that we have for school year 25 and those impacts and then I'll see what I can pull together and if I'm ready to update um to give you a brief update and um the September I will if not then we'll have to move that to October but I do have a document that I work with with just my team I can pull as it pertains just to academics but when you talk about districtwide it's massive right um so let me let me look to see what what I could do okay yeah that would be great if we can receive it and then if there's something that jumps out that's really impacting academics then you know if if for example there was some we talked about I think someone brought up around the chaplain and Mr attorney and I had a sidebar and it's that we're not doing it right so it's just we're not we're not doing it there is no chap you know so let me take a look um Lauren see how I can wrap my head around in terms of how I can compose a composite list for those that are impacting us terrific I think that's great um and speaking of written material would it be possible to please email the uh today's presentation out to all of the committee members she will put it on the couch will link it to the calendar that would be great she said it's already there oh it is okay sorry that I missed that okay terrific um does anybody else have any other questions or uh any other committee members with any other comments well thank you for joining us tonight and thank you for a wonderful first meeting and congratulations to the the school district for all the great work that was done and the gains that were made um it was very impressive and it's um fascinating to hear about the various programs have been put in place and how effective they have been it's been really good news um so thank you for that Dr Sheffield you're muted before you call the meeting to close I just want to thank this um to thank the group I I'm sitting here that tonight our discussion our meeting um just been amazing um in regards to um our conversations and just in terms of the work and and your involvement and how you're pushing us to think um you know to think and to deal with those opportunity gaps right not just talk about what's working great but tonight's meeting um it's just been it's it's been it's been a great meeting I definitely appreciate it and appreciate everyone that took time to log on and I'm just happy to see all of you I missed you good good to hear you and look forward to seeing you soon so do I have a motion to um before you close Laura I just want to say thank you for the opportunity to serve as the chair for the last um year two year I think I was vice chair the year before but the opportunity to serve as the chair I'm not going anywhere but I always believe that um given other leaders opportunity to serve is always a good idea and you know taking a step back and allowing someone to take this seat that you had before um it was appropriate so uh that that's why I decided to decline there was nothing wrong with the doctor um but I decided that we have to let leaders lead so thank you thank you and thank you for the time you served as chair and vice chair it's appreciated uh Gabriella yeah it say wanted to uh thank uh CHL for for her very efficient and very um well organized um uh leadership and uh thank you Laura and Charelle for um proposing to to do all this work it's a lot of work so I really appreciate it thanks everyone thank you thank you all good a motion to adjourn motion to adjourn sh thank you second Randy thank you all in favor I I have a great night and we end it early it's amazing yes thank you bye
