heard during the mascot discussions and he has always promoted Community input on curriculum changes a quote from Mr Lisi that I think exemplifies his vision for our district was is it is important that the programs we build for our district are for everyone and don't exclude anyone it's this level of thoughtfulness and kindness that's enabled Mr louisy to be a leader for the betterment of all of our students Mr Louis's professional background has enabled him to interact with people from diverse uh backgrounds and industries it gave him a unique understanding especially when he helped us on board members and everyone can talk to the uh award recipients e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e move on to routine matters next we have routine matters uh we have our monthly reports uh first we're going to start with our PFO Le is on report by uh Mrs Stephanie hang PFO liaison report okay I just wanted to report on World Language Honor Society on December 4th for pasak Hills and December 5th for pasak Valley um Dr R jeene Safari was in charge of this beautiful event she's the district supervisor of world languages multilingual Learners music and family and consumer Sciences she organized the National Honor ceremony for 89 students that have excelled in biliteracy and the languages include Armenian Chinese French Italian Korean malayam Russian Spanish and Turkish this is the ninth year of participating in this state program and this is the fourth year of the global seal of biliteracy Which languages include this is so cool Arabic Chinese French Hindi Korean Japanese Italian Polish Russian Spanish T Tagalog tagal talag and Turkish um each Honor Society the four Honor Society um read their pledge in their respective languages that was very impressive and provided the translation in English for the rest of us and the four World Language honor societies are the Chinese Honor Society the French Honor Society Spanish Honor Society and Italian Honor Society and it was a very impressive evening with all the students dressed in elegant black on um November 20th we had at the pasak hills cafeteria hidden in plain sight and this event was presented by the Bergen County prevention Coalition children Aid and family services and Center for drug and resources the purpose of the session um is to is for prevention um the drug Trends are shown in many Netflix shows that are our teens watch so that's why we need to be very cognizant about it um we know that the brain is not fully mature until 25 so it's obviously recommended for them to not to take any of these drugs recreational drugs beforehand and an interesting that they thing that they stressed was the question of why do why do they take these drugs the brain has a reward system where it feels there's a feel-good system so when the drugs interfere and inter increases the dopamine that if a person has trauma and they use drug as a medicine the medicine makes their brain feel good so this is the Feelgood system but then the drug takes longer and longer to give them that feel-good reaction so the brain doesn't prod produce its own natural chemicals so then it becomes a dependency this is the problem the drugs hijack the brain's natural reward system making it a challenge to resist their use so they hope that um by presenting these protective factors versus risk factors that our students will stay away and the parents will learn to know what to look for and on December 9th we went to see screenagers um it was screenagers for the elementary aged but it pertains to all of us it was put on by The Hills Valley Coalition run by Jennifer Charo Marissa Waters and Dr Jonathan hesny who's the director of special services and a licensed psychologist specializing in children and AD adolescence um just two points that they stressed that was really good is a healthy childhood does include enough sleep nutrition but now that we have screens we've lost the balance of screen time so for our youth there's a trend that they're looking at the screen and avoiding actually talking to people The increased scream screen scream screen time um and constant comparison to others is anxiety provoking so we were encouraged to make some screen time rules um the screen also gives a false sense of connection because you know how well do you know the person on the other end of the screen and kids nowadays are part of an anxious generation is the technology being used as a tool or as a treat and the movie suggested a 5-day fast from the smartphone so Christmas I will be fasting from my phone this year 2024 is when teachers at pasak Hills I guess pasak Valley too are collecting the phones before class and they found that this has been some kids don't like that including my own but the teachers have found that it has helped increase the attention span of the students even if by 15 seconds that's that's all thank you Mrs Swang now we have uh our student report Andrew Varian from pasak hills will go first hello uh first I want to start off with classroom items so first on Tuesday December 3rd Miss gamg gort's entrepreneurship and honors co-curricular items the National Honor Society along with student Meredith Cola has organized a clothing drive to support the Bergen County Human Services Center which provides crucial services to individuals and Families in Need the shelter is accepting new uh clothing items that will be distributed to men and women between the ages of 20 and 60 donation boxes were set up around the school uh December 2024 thank you Andrew uh next we have Ella goley and her report for pasak Valley High School okay hi um so I'm going to start out Valley's Report with our classroom items um so first the valley Panthers band wrapped up a really exciting fall season performing at PV varsity football games a varsity girls soccer game as well as two of our pepperall or we call them Valley cups um and performances including song included songs by Queen Bruno Mars a vocal night feature and some Halloween favorites um so the Panthers band looks forward to performing at an upcoming PV varsity hockey game this winter season and also as we recognized before a big congrats um to the students named to the 2425 Bergen County band um Carolyn V on the trumpet and Liam O'Brien on the tenor saxophone in addition the PV and pasag Hills Winter concert was held on Thursday December 12th and it featured performances from the PV symphonic band The PV concert band and also two combined pieces um which included over 80 student musicians and lastly the PV chamber Jazz Ensemble recorded and entered the 2025 Charles Mingus National High School competition while the PV jazz band is preparing to record um today on the 16th to enter the jazz at Lincoln Center essentially Ellington Jazz competition um for my next classroom item we're super excited to announce that uh Valley has started our inaug inaugural excuse me class of peer student peer student tutors to staff the valley and Hills writing centers starting this upcoming semester um so basically what that um means is that students in grades through 11 were chosen and identified by their English teachers um as being excellent communicators helpers and writers who would benefit The Writing Center uh by providing peer support for writers in addition to teacher support um so the peer tutors from hills and Valley came together to engage in an all day training which was run by The Writing Center teachers and they'll be compl completing phase two of their training um in the new year so overall it was an amazing kick off and we're thrilled to have the tutors on board okay moving on to co-curricular items for Valley first off the history Club continued its annual tradition of writing letters to our alumni in the military service uh the history Club teamed up with the local American Legion to initiate the letter Drive which is always really well received by the PV Community um and very much appreciated by our men and women in service so thank you to all students and all the classes who letters or holiday cards for my second co-curricular item the environmental Club at Valley collected hundreds of used toys to help keep them out of landfills and donated them to those who are less fortunate um so we donated hundreds of toys and partnered with Joy's Angels which is a homeless shelter in East Orange and lastly on December 19th the international thespian Society chapters from hills and Valley will bring the magic of Broadway to the actor fund home in Englewood which is an assisted living residence for Broadway veterans um and the performers will present a selection of classic Broadway and holiday songs to brighten the day for some of the residents and in addition to the performances the thespians have collaborated with pasak hills interact club and Valley's just about caring Club to create holiday cards which will be distributed throughout um the uh Assisted Living residents as a thought gesture of cheer and kindness um as we enter the holiday season and moving on to valle's athletic items um on November 26th our assistant principal Mr gallion was honored at the annual sports award banquet hosted by the greater Bergen County YMCA where professional Collegiate and high school athletes as well as the Educators and Community leaders were honored um so Mr gallion was honored with the service to youth award due to his really active role in Youth Sports for the river Veil athletic programs as well as having served as a coach here at Valley um in three different sports for 16 years so a really big congrats to Mr gallion on this prestigious award um and as we move into the winter season just want to wish a really um successful season and a good luck to all the winter teams and athletes and we wish you the best of luck as you continue okay for my fun fact um PV Student Government hosted another successful Valley cup or pep rally the day before Thanksgiving break it was a really spirited week culminating in an exciting assembly and highlights were an entertaining relay and also a speedball tournament okay and for my joke I'm trying to stay on theme what do you get when you cross a snowman with a Vampire frostbite this concludes my report to the board of education for December thank you Ella next we have the minutes from the uh the November 18th 2024 the regular meeting at 7:30 and the executive meeting at 9:37 uh can I get a motion to uh can I get a motion please move second vot call please Mr any discussion just I will abstain on the executive meeting I had to step out for conflict got it um roll call any other discussion roll call please Mr us miss Calderone yes Mrs Swang yes Miss Keller yes Mr lisy yes Mrs Martin yes Mr Stanis yes Miss stepin yes Mr Weaver yes regular abstain executive Mrs varges yes next we have our presentation our annual audit report by Brian Gib Gibbons who is the auditor from uh niss Sakia good evening everyone I only have good news to deliver tonight so I'll try to keep this brief first off I wanted to say thank you to Yas and the entire business office staff uh they're truly such a help every year in making the audit go smoothly um they really do a fantastic job and it makes our jobs a lot easier so we're truly appreciative of that so tonight I believe Yas was able to give everyone a financial highlights report and if you have that in front of you and would like to follow along that would be great so this financial highlights it kind of takes the um highlights of the audit report condensed into more of a you know snapshot image where you can kind of see everything so I'd like to begin with the first section here exhibit C1 this is the uh ending picture of your general fund which is the main operating fund of the district you can see here we have two years worth of information where you can uh compare balances so your ending balance here for your fund balance and your general fund at June 30th 2024 was 14.69% than 1.7 million from the year before but overall still in really good shape financially and you'll see here this is where fund balance is made up of these various buckets so you can see starting with the restricted fund balance you have your capital reserve at just shy of 5.5 million you have a maintenance Reserve 1.2 million an emergency reserve of 560,000 your excess Surplus which was generated this year and will be used in your 2526 budget was 2.5 million the excess Surplus that was generated for the June 30th 2023 audit the prior year was 1.4 million and that's going to be used in your or was used in your 2425 budget you have 540,000 of open incumbrances that roll into the 2425 budget you have an additional amount of a million 90,000 that's used in the 2425 budget and your unassigned fund balance which is calculated by state calculation based off 2% of total expenditures was 1.6 million so you'll see here fund balance going down 1.7 million primarily was a result of the utilization of capital reserve funds to help fund capital projects throughout the district so moving down this is just a recap of how much excess Surplus was was used uh on a three-year period so for the year under audit 2324 a little over two million was used to help support the operating budget 2425 you would have used 2.5 million the year that we're in now and next year 2526 the 2.5 million that's what was generated for the year on the AUD under audit that's going to be used in that budget to help support your revenues and and expenditures so overall it increased um from 23- 24 moving forward but remaining pretty stable so this is good numbers on second page here goes into a little bit more detail on some of your reserves starting with your capital reserve account it breaks down the activity for the year you started with a balance of over 8.3 million you had interest earnings you had some projects that in Prior years you would have pulled out of capital reserve to help fund and pay for these projects and then at the end of the projects if they were completed for less than what they originally maybe were budgeted for that money gets returned so you had over a million dollars that were returned that when projects were completed you budgeted for and then withdrawal for capital projects of almost 1.7 million and had an additional board approved withdrawal to fund additional capital projects and fund 30 of 2.3 million and that leaves you at the 5.4 balance at June 30th in 2425 you'll see just below there you're using an budgeted an additional almost 1.6 million to support the budget for capital projects in 2425 your maintenance Reserve began the year at 850,000 interest earnings of 1,250 again unexpended project projects return to the maintenance Reserve 20,000 you are able to deposit by board resolution $950,000 at year end and you utilize 280,000 in the budget and an additional board approved withdrawal of 320,000 your emergency Reserve account you're able to fund uh an additional transfer from your yearend board resolution of 300,000 which I believe is being used in the 2425 budget to help offset some of the large increases in uh health insurance uh cost moving on to your capital projects fund that's where all the uh large projects in throughout the district are accounted in its own separate fund at June 30th 2024 you had a fund balance of a little over $7.1 million and what this number is is the unexpended balances of the ongoing projects at the district so as of the financial the audit statement date $7.1 million are still open in projects that were approved and it's still ongoing one thing we wanted to highlight in the capital projects fund is was the district was got approved and was able to utilize SDA Rod grants for some of these projects to help offset some of the costs which is great moving on to your Enterprise funds you'll see we have a year-to-year comparison for the various Enterprise funds of the district overall all your Enterprise funds in total your net position or your fund balance increased about 168,000 which is great the Food Service Enterprise fund saw a nice increase of$ 1228 ,000 your Milestone while it's still operating and has a def deficit net position it saw an increase of $23,000 your region two Transportation with a deficit in that position of 485,000 also saw an increase of 880,000 your Park Academy saw a slight decrease of approximately 63,000 and your net position is at a little over 303,000 so we just wanted to note that what the district does here their practice is some of the net pension liability for purs gets allocated to these Enterprise funds so specifically in region two you'll see a deficit here but if that net pension liability was just really just a liability on paper when that's removed that Enterprise fund itself is functioning well milest Stone does have net pension liability associated with it but I'll get into that a little a little later I know the district has been working on to to try to improve and bring that net position up over the last few years so I want to move to the long-term liability section right here you just have a breakdown you could see from last year the activity and where you ended up for the various long-term liabilities that you have at the district so first category here your SE seral bonds it's your bonds that you make payments on every year you made a payment of 1.6 million and at June 30th you had a little over 9.4 million left of Serial bonds related un amortised Bond premiums those are related to your outstanding serial bonds and there are premiums that get amortised over the life so as your bonds go down and get paid off those un amortised premiums will go along with it and be reduced leases District had a few new leases this year I believe some were for uh buildings or rentals things like of that nature paid down 227,000 worth of leases and you had a little over of $800,000 balance remaining on the life of the various leases of the district Finance purchases payable that's a quote unquote Capital lease something that you're leasing but at the end you will maintain that asset so you're just paying it off as as it goes down you have a little bit of 668,000 remaining on that and your compensated absence payable that's your accumulated sick invocation unpaid liability for the various employees in the district so we saw a decrease of 145,000 here leaving with a balance of over one 1, 23,000 so just to note this is not a liability that would necessarily come due uh in the short term this is as people are retiring leaving the district and it gets paid out gradually so whatever that person's has their own liability associated with them that's normally what you see when you're budgeting for and you're paying that out it's not a liability that would would come due uh in a large amount in the short term and then your net pension liability uh you know this is determined by actuaries from the state so again it's not a liability that would come due tomorrow but you'll see here in in your governmental funds or your your general fund you have a liability of 10 million for your 50,000 and then your Enterprise funds you have a liability of a little over a million so really you get your bill every year from the state and that's what you pay it's that this is liability is really just on paper so nothing that would come due in the short term and happy to report no formal comments or recommendations this year as I mentioned Ys and everybody in the business office is really doing a great job so we're really thrilled about that and then on the last page we just had a few management suggestions we call them uh the first two are not necessarily the district is doing anything wrong uh We've included this for all of our clients this year it's just something that we want to make you aware of um continue to keep doing what you're doing but the first one deals with the covid-19 federal grants uh a lot of them are coming to an end now and we just want to make you aware that there is the possibility that there could be a a state or government agency that could come and make a review of those various grants so in addition to the audit work that we do there is the possibility that there could be a desk review that they could come out I believe uh in September the uh District had a review of their a Grant so that it could now that these grants are ending there is very possible that they could be coming out so we just want to say continue to keep your records accurate and make sure everything with purchasing and procurement are all following the the guidelines that they laid out with these grants associated with that the Federal grant receivables just want to make sure with all these grants coming to an end that you you're you're timely uh in submitting your reimbursement requests and not saying that the district hasn't been doing that but we just want to make sure that you you're staying on top of this and seeing that through um the next one deals I I briefly mentioned the deficits in the Enterprise funds so namely the Milestones program and the region two Transportation region two mostly do be because of the net pension liability Milestones I know every year it's been kind of running at a deficit so just want to bring it to your attention to maybe continue to evaluate that and see how you can maybe bring that back up into the uh um you know into the positive the last one here is with your fixed assets so not saying I know uh Yas and everyone in the business office they they do a great job and give us great records with the fixed assets it's all the capital assets that are tagged throughout the district um but we do recommend that if they've been been maintained inhouse so every five to 10 years or so maybe it's sometimes good to go outside and get an outside of appraisal company to kind of just do a a full review and then that that the records are accurate and you know um not saying that they're not doing a great job um recording all these assets but it's just good practice to maybe take a look at that and and and see if U that'd be good for you so with that uh that's all I had again another great year financially and we appreciate all the hard work that that everybody does and all the help so if anybody has any questions or or comments I'd be happy to try to answer them thank you Mr Gibbons thank you and I just want to commend YW in the business office for this exceptional audit thank you thank you Mr isami yeah as uh as Brian mentioned it's uh it's the entire office uh they do an outstanding job and uh you know we we try to stay within compliance on everything and we have a question go to Brian or we go to Valerie um and uh and get an answer because we're trying to we try have Finance for which we have 25 consent agenda items can I get a motion please so move second discussion I had a question on number six um under professional development or school trip CI mentorship program what is that exactly 17 17 AG 17 yeah it could be Mak sense so it's a training related to um this individual's counseling license and it's specifically related to help support students in therapeutic work by teaching them skills necessary to recognize and work with patterns that arise in sessions thank you any further discussion uh 15 and 16 on page 20 and 21 I don't remember that being discussed in in facilities I was a little I guess not a little I fell off my chair when I saw the price of the AC um upgrades 1.4 million for Hills and almost 700,000 for Valley what's what's the life that we get out that uh quite a long time so it's uh it's a whole new AC system in the cafeteria so this is for pasite Valley High School um and then this was uh oh sorry I thought 15 was for Hills yeah it's it that's the um the withdrawal from um capital reserve to help fund this project so this project was budgeted I believe in 2122 um and things went on and it was impossible to go out to bid um because it was right after Co um and then we went out to bid um this year or was it last year right at the end and um we still kept getting a lot of high bids so anything mechanical is still kind of really expensive to do um but it is something that has been uh talked about and as well as budgeted for a few years now so we rejected two bids uh twice I should say and then we went into negotiations uh and this company Central pack came out with a um a very good negotiated price comparatively speaking so uh when we talk about 2122 we had budgeted construction about $717,000 so that was pretty old um and then Robert thought it might be close to a million but when we went out to bid it was even more than that uh so we're at 1.4 to do this and we'll need an additional close to $700,000 in capital reserve which we have uh and we were estimating that that was probably about the amount that we would need to fund this project the additional capital reserve and just to clarify um the updates from this have been ongoing since before I got here and they're listed in the Friday update under Robert section as cafeteria AC just so you can go back and follow along what's the time like how what's the life that you get out of this uh it should last uh I don't know I'd have to ask Robert but I would imagine about 30 40 years I mean we're going to have to maintain it obviously so there are repairs that being done um we have a lot of systems in here already that are starting to go and uh we're talking about 40 or 50 years lifetime um so but all during that time you will have to maintain it and you will have to make certain repairs okay thanks any further discussion roll call please Mr usami Miss Calderone yes Mrs Wang yes Miss Keller yes Mr louisy yes yes Mrs Martin yes Mr Stanis yes Miss stepin yes Mr Weaver yes Mrs varges yes next we have old business any old business to discuss so I had a comment that I wanted to make this evening um since uh I've been thinking about a comment that was made at our last meeting regarding post-graduation plans and if I'm not mistaken it was mentioned that perhaps we should not waste too many resources on those students not heading to a 4year or 2-year College um diverse postgraduation paths whether it's a four-year College a 2-year college technical trade school military service direct employment or Gap years all deserve a full attention and support each path represents a valid Choice made by our students for their Futures based on statistics 30% of students who attend a four-year College drop out their first year this is why I believe providing resources to all students about all postsecondary options is so important as a like offici we have the responsibility to ensure every student sees their chosen path is validated and supported by this board whether they're among two students or 200 success looks different for each student and our role is to support all of these paths to success so I just wanted to make sure that we were kind of still on board with the whole postsecondary and that you know we're here for all the students not just those who attend a four-year or twoyear college thank you thank you Elizabeth I couldn't agree more I think it's super important I think that while yes the majority of our students do go to two or foury year colleges uh we should not uh we should be paying attention to the students who aren't because there's plenty of them um and so I agree with you wholeheartedly on its importance Dr bot and I have talked about this uh already and we do have a pretty robust program and we are we had talked about having um Mr Joe orlac come and speak about um the different you know e uh externships and different things that the students have access to which has actually that program has really grown a lot uh so we are definitely I am I am on board with what you're saying definitely um if if we need to we can always have another we used to have a committee for postsecondary I mean unfortunately it was the first year when I was here never met that committee but um I do think that uh if we need it it is something that we can do and have as part of a committee um but I I do think we also perhaps as board members need to have a little more information on what we have available now y um I think that we need to know what's here in our district before we can say all right we need more um and if we need more that's great I I think that you know we as a board I think you know um it's part of our responsibility toward each and every student to do that but I uh Dr bot and I had talked about having Mr orlac come in um and talk about that so um that is in the near future uh in the next I would say by by Maybe by March like up to the March sort of meeting I have intensely second yeah I had him sensitively in um January February so I'm gonna email him right now and clarify perfect okay and just to kind of backtrack a couple years ago he did come speak to us at length about how much the program has blown up um and the students were in the hundreds where obviously it started off as a very small group um so I do think it's something that attention has been paid to and I think it's something that could always be improved on and developed and it's something he is very passionate about and I think he'll be very excited to come talk to some of the new board members regarding all of the wonderful things that they do and the connections they make with these kids with the community yeah I think it's great to get an update because I think if it you know has grown so much more um since we got that report even I think it is a great idea to update it so that'll be uh hopefully January or February I appreciate your comments uh Elizabeth uh anyone make a statement on that that question that miss calone is coming from is what I had said from a PFA meeting so I'm glad you brought it up because the word the wording in there saying wasting money is very careless so I apologize for that careless terminology that it's not a waste it came up because at the PFA meeting there's a lot of pressure for the students to go to a 4-year or 2-year College there's well this is specifically for pasac Hills there's the sweatshirt the college sweatshirt picture that is so much pressure and um principal wheen says he it's not a a Hills event the students just do that and a second thing and I I mean when I see that I feel like a lot of pressure and the second thing is when we have the fashion show which is the biggest fundraiser when they're going down the runway it's always their college names and I think that that's too much pressure why are we doing it like that so that's how that discussion came out that it's too much pressure on that and we should balance it out a little bit right so it just goes back to making sure that the parents are also educated yes you know a lot of it comes from the parents right wanting their kids to go to a fouryear college it's not the way of the world anymore so right so I brought up um other Alternatives and Mr strunkus and M U Mrs Schneider they said every student has their personalized path that they follow no one is forced into a box of a four-year college or a two-year college or anything like that so they wanted to make sure that we understood that the counselors are there personalized for every single student doing their own personalized unique path and no one's forced one way or another I think it's our community more than our teachers to be honest with you it's the parents because I my experience with my children going through the school it's their peers and their parents that the pressure is coming from and those you're correct the the sweatshirt Co it's the oh my gosh the no it's the when they get they all the Instagram Commitment Day thank you oh my goodness Commitment Day when they all come in in their sweatshirts and t-shirts and that is not sponsored by the school that is something the kids do on their own um so I'm not saying it should or shouldn't happen but I do think that that's you know again peer Le well and then the push back at that meeting oh my gosh maybe I should save this for later but the push back at the meeting is some of the kids really are proud of the colleges that they got to so now we have the push back of they work really hard to get there and then the balance of you know the other people yeah I I think to sort of put both of those things together in my opinion I do think that we as a school district uh that is a big responsibility that we need to sort of grab on to in the sense of really um you know we have our guidance counselors and we have our guidance Department that does uh that is obviously key in helping students along in their next steps um and I think that I think that um perhaps as far as in you know supporting these students who are maybe taking different tracks I do think that is something that you know could be maybe emphasized a little bit more if it's uh something that's outside the box you know I mean I have and my own child took a completely different course uh outside of any box and um you know it would have been great to have a little more understanding by the guidance counselors but um you know I do think that it is a really important thing to support each and every student no matter what their uh path is so one of the things I'd be interested to learn as part of that presentation um is um what the course offerings look like before we get to the internships because I hear a lot about the internships and the offerings there but what drives the decision-making is usually the courses that the students are taking their freshman sophomore junior years um going back to when we implemented the new schedule or not we when Administration implemented the new schedule one of the um I guess goals of the schedule was to increase course offerings so I'd be curious to know what courses have been added in since the new schedule was implemented um and how many students are making use of taking an elective versus just taking the pasca period and not taking a class like has there been a an increase a decrease what do those numbers look like and so I think that would be valuable data that feeds into then how were students then positioned to be able to make those decisions when they get to their Juniors and Senior year so I just want to Second um what Michael was saying Mr Weaver um I know that we talked about this at length during the retreat that we had we made um we had a lot of Partners uh working together and one of the things that we I think unanimously had decided that we wanted to work on was options benefiting the students After High School um and one of the things that I would be interested in knowing is just like Mr Weaver had said what course offerings do we have um are there anything are there any courses that we can offer the students as far as like what options they have Beyond High School um not just limited to Career or College Pathways but um just a general knowledge of what to do how to be prepared to be an adult and to be a functioning member of society as an independent person I'm just going to add on that I know we talked about this at our board retreat a lot um and I do know you know in on our agenda we have all that professional development I love it um I want to see more of it um I like that our counselors are going out and visiting colleges and um doing other things maybe this is something that we want their counselors to explore even other districts to see what they are doing with these types of programs to Alternative routs um outside of um college so maybe something else to look into maybe conferences more more something like that and just to piggyback on that we started um uh Elizabeth with m M uh M's help um Turned us onto a Bergen County initiative where we've now designated um counselors at both schools so there's a counselor at Hills and a counselor at Valley who have participated in some of the Workforce Development training that's offered through Bergen County that's very specific to kind of our region and our area um and then they have also um over the summer they participated in an additional I think it was sponsored by the doe but additional training on the idea of um uh non- colge bound learner so absolutely and I love that we now have designated sort of counselors who are participating in those um and they're both um they both got registered into a uh network of other counselors so they're getting information from Workforce Development both at the state and local level so that was a great that's a great it's a great program it was a great option and um you know I I agree and I think that's a great way for our um internal people to um get that information but then also for all the counselors to know if they have a student that may have a question about that there's someone to go to so it's been yeah it's been super helpful and I guess since you all are now in the budget process and looking to build that for next year I guess a question would be too are we looking to add more courses in and will that require the hiring of staff so I think it speaks to just the history of where we been over the last three or four years and where are we going and you know I guess those decisions are happening now just in terms of like Staffing and budgeting of monies and sectioning right I something oh sorry I just wanted to mention that I I I don't think that um the responsibility should fall solely on the um the guidance counselors I think that this should be required I think there needs to be more attention and I don't know that students you know may or may not be accepting the help or going as far as you know to go see a counselor about these questions that they may have um so I think it's important to look at different avenues for how to reach those students so Jenny I think having a committee would be definitely worthwhile if we could put that together for next year sure AG is it something worth like pulling students too and giving them and I don't know if we've done that but is it something worth just kind of pulling and all of our students seeing you know have you considered these things how interested are you is it something um would would you take a class in plumbing or whatever you know um and trying to trying to trying to see if there's something else that we can be doing for our students it might even be worth asking them like are you aware of this or do you know what X Y and Z is because they may not know what they don't know you know so it might be important to sort of guide them I just go go ahead please um Hills has a financial literacy class that could be a requirement because my kids took that but them taking it freshman year versus senior year is very different they just have different capacities like they took a freshman year like oh that's what a checkbook does um and also they have they have senior seminar I mean seniors have seminar remember what it's called senior seminar and that has been super helpful so that's when the plumbers come in the lawyers come in the doctors come in the surgeons come in and they talk to the the seniors about it and they that's useful that's a requirement as well just a thought if I may now I I would I would start with what the end game here is for all these students right Katie you mentioned it before it's making a positive impact to society and I think you have to stress the fact to them that there's multiple paths to get there okay multiple paths if you look at some of the biggest the most charitable people the Char charitable people the most successful small business people they they don't have college degrees they chose a path and it worked I think the more we can focus because right now we're in the weeds what am I doing now what am I doing this year next year I think look long term it then it becomes less stigmatized to choose that path so I I would start with a vision of the future and there's a lot of different ways to get there and there's no I was I didn't even I I was happy work in construction coming out of high school I wasn't even go to college my father made my brother fill out the application to college right so I mean it's a fine it's a thin line between what you choose to do I just want people to understand there is no wrong choice there is no better choice right so I think let's give them a a vision of the future and then maybe help them maybe that'll help them with a path right and get you know eliminate the stigma that's key yeah Dr blot do we have like a career center or something like that do I know it sounds kind of cliche in old school but like maybe it doesn't have to be go career center because we're looking at so many different things but do we have like so I brought up Guidance just because just from my experience and I'm not saying it should only be left up to guidance but I do think that a lot of students they just don't know um and so guidance is sort of their first foray into what do you want to do in your future and it's that first adult who is actually like you know other than your parents or who is really sitting there talking to you about this and can have a significant impact on your trajectory and so in my opinion you know again doesn't have to be named the career center but like it something where we as a board of education can support guidance to really be able to say okay I'm your counselor these are the options you have before you what do you think about these okay so this is a no okay okay um I'm going to help you because I do think that again we have to support support guidance as a board of education we support the guidance counselors to be able to say okay I know how to help you with these different because you know student a and student B may decide to go into HVAC or something and they still the two of them might have different paths to take despite it being an HVAC type of thing so I really feel like we would do a really good service to to our students to really have a guidance um uh Department that really is robustly knowledgeable or even if they're not knows how to get the information to go a different route yeah and some of that is in within score um it used to be within Naviance Naviance also has a push down program that goes into the middle school that I believe some of environmental schools are using I'll follow up and find that out but so I think that there's a couple of elements here as well so um when we were a navian system navian had career um exploration I think they called it that went down into um the Middle grades and then had some um more in-depth career uh exploration for high school score has the same thing I would actually kind of throw it to our our student reps as well to ask them like like like you know have you done the CER exploration in score or navian like like where where are you finding out information about what you might want to do yeah I think a lot of it is just like it's the kids who are really like personally motivated who are going to like actually go and score and like look through and like take those quizzes and like pay attention to that stuff and I was going to say before is I don't know if Hills kids got this email but I just got Emil from guidance about like future you know like after high school plans and it was a Google form survey like you were talking about polling kids but the options were just like it literally goes with what we're talking about right now it was asking like you know what colleges are you applying to and like um you know what matters to you when choosing a college and it was asking about like college size like Professor student ratio things like that and I don't if I was a kid who wanted to apply to trade school I don't even know where I would go about like getting that information if I wasn't like personally like really interested in it yeah that's fantastic feedback thank you in my opinion and I hear what you're saying about score right but to what Ella is saying we have two motivated people here right like I mean these are not kids where we have to be like oh did you do this did you I'm sure your parents don't ask you did you do homework you know whatever right like but we have all sorts of caliber of students and the reason I'm I do this is because I want to reach every student from here to here and so we have students who are unsure who are insecure in what they're going to do and in my opinion um helping those students is just as important I actually think a personal type of relationship is probably even more important than something like score um you know just having that conversation like hey what do you think that you're going to do um and then does that do you know does that survey does it come from guidance I I don't have a copy of that so it must have gone just to students I have a note to ask uh guidance about it okay yeah I think that personal feedback you know we all can really affect people in how we talk to them and what we say and it's no different with students so I I I really feel personally strongly about that and I appreciate your feedback on that Andrew do you have anything anything to comment um personally I believe that Mr louisi said at best that there is a stigma around people who want to go to trade school um personally my experience being in like honors and AP classes I noticed that every kid single kid in those types of classes want to go to for year accredited college they want to go to the top universities and strive to do their best and while that's great there's a lot of judgment and stigma around people who want to go to a trade school or become plumbers go to construction and personally I think we really could use more of that being in construction and doing Plumbing is something that we really need in society so I think just offering um just offering more conversations around trade schools and around you know not going to college should be something that we should talk about more just because you know like Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard and he started Facebook um uh what's his name uh the guy who created Microsoft he started in his basement so I just think that you know not not all political leaders and not all people who are CEOs go to college it's what you make of it it's who you surround yourself with so I think honestly like Ella said the best we and Mr Lisi we really should avoid the stigma and kind of come together as a school and a community Mr or said that he's watching the meeting and would love to come and speak to us thank you Mr orlac we can't wait to hear you speak yes very excited I also wanted to mention um you know I think it's important I think it's wonderful and I think it's important that we um you know you know encourage students to do exactly what they want to do and find ways and solutions to get them to whatever their goals may be but I also do believe that we need to be um realistic and we need to figure out what options the students have as far as um like some may or may not have the resources to go to a four-year school and how do we get them to a four-year College if they don't have those resources and what options do they have available um on top of it's not just trade schools or college there's also the military there's also so many different things to do out there um and while we have the students here with us I think it's so wildly important that we find ways to foster um you know the growth and uh prosperity of the students Beyond High School um no matter what that looks like and it could be I I mentioned this uh Investments it could be you know how to buy a home how to secure a loan you know our you know our student loans beneficial for you or not and whatever your Pathways may be um but just how to do taxes lots of things that people could benefit from that they might not be getting already so um there's just a lot of really wonderful ideas and I love this conversation thank you so for your input comment real quick uh you mentioned the stigma and that you're concerned about that I'm wondering if uh there could be somehow a Serv survey that doesn't necessarily focus on college but the question of if you had to choose to go to college or not because I think sometimes the students feel like they have to go because their their peers are going and you know when you get those and they'll pick sometimes uh a very U how should I say um school that is not the best fit for them just so that they can have a place and just so that they can fit in and uh you know maybe even start in the ninth grade something along those lines uh when they're younger they don't have that pressure as much are you thinking about college are you thinking about career you know that kind of thing and I think sometimes that changes and I think that we also need to acknowledge that we might not know what the next like these social influencers on social media like who knew that they could make more money than any one of us um so I think that it keeps changing and I think we need to change with what's going on around us I think it sorry I'll leave you with this piece of advice I was speaking with my son because he's going through this process he's not sure what his career path is going to be maybe he has an idea I said Michael pick the best college that you're going to have the most fun at for four years at the most reasonable price and figure it out along the way given given the cost of our HVAC repair maybe you should go into that um I just wanted to also say that there's a a lot of mental side of it when it comes to choosing a college I mean Mrs Hong and Mr Weaver both have kids in my grade and I can only imag how they feel going through this college decision there's a lot of pressure like you said um when choosing a college and like Mr Weaver said how to choose a college that he's going to have the most fun at and at a reasonable price my parents said the same thing um Ella and I actually had a discussion before we even got here because I got a scholarship to one of the schools I applied to and my parents really are forcing me not forcing me but guiding me to choose that college however it's not the best college and because it's not the best college my brain automatically said nope not out of but I think just from hearing this conversation and listening to all of your guys' point of view like it's kind of changing my mind in a way which I think it's important I I I also think it's helpful to let the students know like the averages and realities of how many times a a college student changes their major when you go to college there's going to be major changes in those four years five six years you're going to wind up with a degree that you may not even have thought you went to college for or you might even go into a career outside of college so you might quit college and start your own Facebook uh they don't do Facebook I'm sorry it's Instagram something with AI Tik Tok Tik Tok yeah any further discussion I appreciated this discussion so much this is I think what we all are here on the board for this was awesome and thank you so much to our two student Representatives you really you really gave us very thoughtful um feedback and we so appreciate the both of you uh any new business well kind of old kind of new um I just wanted to very briefly I know it's late um thank Pat For All You've Done not only for this board but for our commitment to our mission so I'm grateful for our time for working together and I wish you all the all the best I will say I learned as a non- educator I was one of The Outsiders but I I I learned a lot from uh each and every one of you I think uh you know we made a great choice in bringing Dr bot on board um the community has been great and uh all of you have been great and I I really enjoyed getting to know the student uh representative so and they have great Futures I'm really really proud of this community and what it's done so I'm glad I could add a little bit of value where I could so thank you thank you Pat for always bringing your steady Integrity we appreciate you thank you Pat we will miss you um Gia Miss guaman who will be taking his place you have big shoes to Phill uh but
