report now move over to the superintendent's report Dr Mast thank you so good evening everyone I love to start the last meeting in May with news that I think everyone loves to hear there are only 20 school days left this year I'd also like to remind everyone that next week is a short week for the district thankfully this year we had no reason to use any emergency closing days so the board and I decided we could give back those days that were built into the calendar so everyone can enjoy and extend it six day Memorial Day Weekend schools are closed Wednesday May 24th through Monday May 29th and tonight we'll hear from our media Specialists our award-winning student SAS our award-winning student poet and we will recognize and thank our incomparable PTA thank you Dr mast business administrators report Mr Jones thanks um I wish my mine is never as fun I'm always talking about money or something um you only have 20 school days left yeah um yeah I just want you know I want to highlight you know we had our first uh we had our transportation bids on the high on the agenda tonight and um you know last year Transportation was up 40 and uh this year not a size 40 but still up 15 which you know any other time historically over the past 20 years if we would have saw a 15 increase in transportation costs we would be you know out of our minds like wow this is like what's what's going on um and it's still above what you know core CPI numbers which are you know anywhere between you know five and eight percent this is you know double that still um so we did receive a couple different bids this year which last year we only received one bid so I'm hoping that um you know maybe an extra won't be as bad but I think it just just want to point it out that it continues to be a stress on us uh we continue to struggle to you know have good service even with our buses because basically the bus companies hire any driver they can get um so um I expect to continue but I'm hopeful that uh that it improves uh in the next year um and yeah it'll it'll you know I know we just finalized our budget but I'm hyper focused on uh the 24 25 budget and uh what this means for it thank you Mr Jones to our student board reps now Jada hi um so I have a list of uh some upcoming events so for seniors senior project is starting on Monday May 22nd um our senior project this year is pretty large we have about 180 students in the senior class doing senior projects and that includes me I will be working uh here with the board to help diversity Equity inclusion for our education system here at SPF um some other senior events are senior movie night which is happening next week May 23rd seniors receiving their yearbooks which have is happening June 7th the largely anticipated senior scholarship night is happening May 31st um and then Senior picnic is happening June 14th and then just some a little Club recognitions the interact Club most recently attended the rotary uh I wrote a meeting with the SPF rotary and the rotary slogan is service above itself and the highly anticipated dance Marathon will be held on June 1st from four to eight and so we encourage everybody to come out if you can it's a very fun time and then I would like to recognize my other student rep for being athlete of the week or softball [Applause] um so on the topic of sports uh we have states that are coming up for a lot of sports and currently volleyball our volleyball boys teams are both in the county finals today JV won their game and varsity is still playing um another thing is that finals are coming up for high schoolers so be prepared keep studying for those um about clubs the mental health club had a wellness Fair during lunch the other day on Wednesday actually and back to Sports on June 7th we're going to have the meet the coaches night for 8th graders so they can meet the coaches and get all the info about sports and what they need to do to be prepared um another thing that I would like to do is give a big thank you to Jada who has really like taught me how to be a student rep unfortunately she only has about a month left because she's going to be graduating soon but I think I can speak for everybody when I say that we're really Gonna Miss Her on that note applications are going to be sent out soon for sophomores that are interested in being a part of the board so keep your eyes out for an email from Dr thank you both okay moving on to board president announcement the New Jersey open public meeting law is enacted to ensure the right to the public to have advanced notice of and to attend the meetings of public bodies at which any business affecting their interests is discussed or acted upon in accordance with the previous provisions of the act the Scotch Plains family board of education has caused notice of this meeting to be published having a date time and place thereof posted at the Board of Education officers located at 512 Cedar Street Scotch Plains New Jersey such notice has also been provided in written forwarded to Union County Hawk Star Ledger the Township Clerk of Scotch Plains and a Borough Clerk of Fanwood their revised annual notice of regularly scheduled meetings has adopted April 28 2022. we'll now move to recognition and instructional updates so the first start with um that it has several parts so first with all of the national state attention that is being given to library collections the Board of Ed has inquired about how we maintain and update our collection and Dr McGarry has been doing a little work in that area Dr McGarry sure with the participation of more than 100 parents and Guardians we recently presented revised health education proficiencies to the board of education for approval um the approval of these proficiencies has prom prompted A Renewed focus on reviewing our library collections to ensure that our catalogs support and are aligned with these proficiencies this is especially important in the area of health education where we respect that families have the right to up students out of certain lessons and by extension to certain Media Center resources school media Specialists wear many hats including literacy Advocate resource manager and research specialist each of them is tasked with evaluating their school's collection each year while adding about two to three hundred titles and disposing of items that are obsolete damaged or just no longer relevant we're fortunate to have two of our Elementary media Specialists with us tonight to give us a window into how that work is done to tell us more I'd like to introduce two of our Superstar media Specialists Mrs Stephanie gionaccio from coal school and Mrs Terry Keller from Evergreen foreign good evening my name is Terry Keller as Dr McGarry has introduced I have been a teacher in Scotch Plains Family School District for 30 years at Evergreen school I began my career as a classroom teacher and transitioned to the elementary school library for almost 20 years Stephanie demacio I've been a teacher in the Scotch Plains Family School District for 18 years with the first years in the classroom and the past seven years I've been in Kohl's elementary school as there's media specialist librarian not only do I teach in this District my husband teaches in this District we are residents of Scotch Plains my daughters go through nettingham and Garner Elementary School it is our pleasure to share with you the process the school librarians use to develop the school library collections at the request of Dr Mastin Dr McGarry purpose of a library media center collection is to provide students with resources that support intellectual growth professional development individual interests as well as recreational use this is a multi-faceted methodical ongoing process that's carried on throughout the year including weekends summer months um each year the library and media specialist receives a budget to purchase new materials for their collections the library media Specialists book the library media specialist chooses books using a variety of criteria first is curriculum for example extreme weather became a new topic as part of the ELA curriculum therefore we needed to enhance books for students to access when studying this topic second legislative and legislative mandates and District initiatives recently books were purchased in response to the law requiring instruction about the history and contributions of the Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month under the district strategic plan the library Department wanted to access assess the social and emotional learning resources in our libraries each Library did an audit to see the titles available for students and staff based on this information we researched titles to sport to support the district initiative third authors and illustrators probably our top one authors and illustrators in children's literature that are popular among our students this could include new Authors and illustrators or existing ones we work alongside our ptas and selecting authors and illustrators that visit our schools for example Evergreen school had Juana Martinez meal this year as well as Peter Reynolds Kohl's Elementary School have Lisa Klein Ransom as well as Mike chicatello to present to students we added titles to ongoing popular series like owl Diaries and drag Masters we select award-winning books using calvicott as a guide dog days received the gold medal this year we also do Newbery books such as when you trap a tiger we also get recommendations from parents students staff and other Library professionals lastly we use Windows and mirrors this may be a term you may have heard of before our collections aim to provide students with Windows and mirrors oops that our Windows provide students with insight into the lives experiences and ideas of people different from oneself while mirrors reflect reflect one's own lives experience and ideas books must tell a wide range of stories and they need to include a diversity of people and worlds we are committed to increasing access to inclusive books for young people of all Races and backgrounds as we qualate our books to purchase we use a variety of resources to help with that final selection we look to be sure that the book selected are of high interest in the school Community represent quality literature for our students and of course our age-appropriate for our libraries Professional Resources such as school library Journal kirkus our book vendor file it provide us with data for each title such as the audience the reading level professional reviews so I pulled up one recent Award winner up here and I wanted you to see what I look at you um I actually look at all of all of us use this this is something that the district provides and we look at the age-appropriateness down here we look at the basically the statistics that are given to us we look at what the learning objectives are of the book we look at similar titles of that book one in particular right here is pizza and taco which I know that my daughters and I have read numerous times and we have absolutely loved it and I've recommended it to students in cold school and they have loved it as well you care carry down here and you look at more details you look at school library Journal reviews so this is something that I would look at and see the award-winning and I would think this would be a great fit for our library another book that came up recently in conversation between Terry and I is this one wink and as we started talking about it you could see I don't put my glasses on doesn't say it says Upper Elementary um um and this is one where I clicked on the wrong link but at some point you'll see grades four to seven and that's when we start to think okay we are in elementary school we are pre-k through four so we're at the top end of this uh Spectrum or the bottom end and we I'm not quite sure if this is a book that I would include in my library again I will look through there's a video here I don't know if you're interested in listening to it or not um but you can listen to the author how excited he is about his book that he wrote you can see a similar Title Here would be wonder which is extremely popular turns into a movie a lot of kids know this um but again if I am unsure after looking at all of this information the public library knows me by name I go in there once a week I check out the books I read them um if I don't have as much time I have a family and a lot going on I have the library's Libby app on my phone I can download the audiobook I have my earbuds in all the time and I also have the highest audible account that I can possibly have to listen to the book and not only will I listen to it through the lens of my job as a teacher librarian but I will also think of my daughters I will think of the ages that they were at I will think of my students that I see every day I will see think about what would excite them and if there's something in the book that I'm not comfortable with I won't choose to order it if I'm still kind of weary and not sure I will conserve so my colleagues and see do you have this in your library is this something that your kids are in doing and should we add it to our library collection so those different lenses I think I talked off of this um what I have there in conclusion there is a great deal of thought time and effort put into this ongoing process needed to create a balanced collection for all students in the Scotch Plains Family School District similar to doing laundry it never ends and continues throughout our day weekends and Summers today is Terry's birthday and my daughter's birthday [Applause] good evening happy birthday Thomas well I just want to say thank you I think as Dr Mass said it was you know one understanding a better having a better understanding about the process of the evaluations of the media materials that go into the libraries um especially as noted in in what we you know know going on around the country in different places it was important to us to understand that process um and we know that it is an ever-ending list of laundry for you so thank you and we really appreciate it I would just like to Echo the uh thanks and and I think your your wonderful representations of your colleagues um and and the school district in general the the care and the thought uh that goes into what you do day in and day out and um that probably we as a community tend to take for granted so thank you so much I know a teacher appreciation week just ended so this is gives us a chance to say thank you again and it's great to hear from we we don't normally get to hear from you and the media specialist so it's great and you know I I actually sat on the board of the Scotch Plains Public Library so I'm very familiar with um everything that goes into that part of it then I can only imagine what it's multiplied by when you're dealing with the young children all the time so thank you and and I really appreciate that you came out on such a big birthday night s so I should be giving you a gift thank you so so moving on our our next piece is um some very exciting recognition we are thrilled to recognize three fourth grade students from Brunner Elementary School who were selected to their award-winning poems Giovanna flecka Ethan Schneider and a rule service let me try that again srivastava have a little gift for you too so please paper for many poems yes so next [Applause] introduce Hannah burkert Hannah is a fifth grader at Terrell Middle School in Mrs depaolo's class our fifth grade students were invited to participate in a creative writing contest by Dia Matthews an attorney member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and also an SPF parent the contest called celebrate America was designed to promote fifth graders knowledge of U.S immigration and to explore the ideas of immigration and inclusion through creative writing the celebration the the celebrate America creative writing contest challenged fifth graders across the country to reflect on and write about one of two themes why am I glad America is a nation of immigrants or what does it mean to be a welcoming Nation Hannah's essay was chosen as the winning entry from New Jersey and will now go on to compete at the national level here's Hannah to tell us which theme she chose and to read to us her award-winning essay Hannah please come up and share your essay with us [Applause] good evening thank you for having me I chose I am glad that America is a nation of immigrants so this is my essay I am glad that America is nation of immigrants immigrants are America 's nicknames for how it's a country of culture and acceptance is The Melting Pot The Melting Pot means that America Embraces everything and learns from others my essay will talk about how America being a nation of immigrants is good because people have a chance to learn about others help people's lives and immigration in my family I am glad that America is a nation of immigrants because people have a chance to learn about others in school we learn about languages this helps me learn about different places also you can learn about different cultures one place is California which has Chinatown where people can learn when peop where people can experience their heritage stopping people from immigrating to America stops America another example is how people learn new things from others recently during lunch my friend ate a food called bath now I eat it as often as I can the fact that I just learned this now when I'm known that my basically my whole life encourages me to learn more everyone should be able to feel this way learning about people is important I'm glad that America is a nation of immigrants because it helps Wars hard times and religion lead people to drop everything in search of a better life also people who are already America benefit from immigrants because they can change for the better without immigrants life wouldn't be like it is today one example is math and science Albert Einstein Marie Curie both learn both moved from different places and gave America something important another example is meeting new people most of America has immigrated from somewhere else it is wonderful how many people have moved to America and shared their stories people meet someone new every day and those people change lives every day in school I learned a new thing with immigration I can and want to learn even more another reason I'm glad that America is a nation immigrants is because of my family history on my papa's side my grandparents Vincenzo perlio and Catherine perlio moved from California Italy Anthony puleo and Rose polio moved to America from Sicily Italy both both families move for better for a better life my Nana's family moved from England including my great great grandmother Hannah Thomas my grandparents the Gunther's moved from Germany both sides moved here for better jobs and money it was hard living in these places and America seemed the best to be the best place to solve these problems in conclusion I'm glad that America is a nation immigrants because it helps people have a chance to learn about other people's lives before this assignment I never thought about my family's immigration I found out America is amazing I love learning about people's Heritage and culture now it helps you grow as a person without immigrants I wouldn't have so many great friends so I'm not glad I'm not glad America has immigrants I am thrilled [Applause] thank you fantastic that was very very very nice it was great well written it's we have this is what we love about you know our board meetings is when we have students come and show us what they do it's fantastic Hannah I'm so glad that you're going to be representing Scotch Plains Fanwood with such an uplifting wonderful story about how we can all um learn from each other and be uh just just how how much culture there is in America and how important that is so thank you so much for sharing that with us and really good luck I think you deserve to go all the way with that one thank you very much it was very insightful I actually learned from you so that was excellent thank you you could tell it was written from your heart it was very very good [Laughter] you write many essays on it [Applause] so there one day that or on the stage in one of the place All Right Moving On First public comment so according to Scotch Plains Family Public School bylaws 0164 and zero one six five the meeting will be open for 15 minutes for public comments maximum three minutes for speaker speakers addressing superintendent items business functions and other board business will be heard first if time remains speakers May address other matters speakers please state your name and the town which reside please note the words you use public comment period as an opportunity to listen to Citizens concerns but not to debate issues or enter into question and answer sessions or cross-examination between the public and the individual members be aware that not all issues brought before the board will be resolved that evening boards May respond to public comment by seeking additional information or by delegating the authority to investigate the issues to the superintendent and or his or her designee thank you now the comment will now be open if anybody would like to make a public comment please come to the mic and state your name in the town in which you reside Gary Morris family that was a tough act to follow man um okay um New Jersey New Jersey has become the first state in the country to require public schools to teach media literacy to K through 12 students as a way to combat misinformation this is actually right up my alley this is something I always did with my kids and we'd watch the news together and we talk about things and we say is that opinion is that true let's let's check another source are they exaggerating so as a public service I would like to teach the first lesson tonight regarding meeting in this information this is free of charge Mr Jones is budget neutral you're welcome this quote is taken from an October 2021 tap into article about an SPF word of Ed meeting a Fanwood councilwoman said what happened in the middle of coven where a black man was killed in the street in the way that he was uh because he was black has happened a million times before this councilwoman is 50 years old that means she has seen it before unarmed black men killed every day of her life purposely exaggerating the dangers posed by police is a gross Injustice to the men and women that choose to put the uniform on each day the media in this case accurately reported what was said in the Board of Ed meeting so technically they told the truth but they never checked the facts everybody attending the Board of Ed meeting heard what was said but nobody had the courage to correct the councilwoman one of the most important lessons we can give students is to research multiple sources for information to get to the truth so that's it thank you Mr Morris any other public comment seeing none I will close this portion of the public comment and we'll move on to letters to the board there were none committee reports Mr Brody go for it okay I'll do the more then I shouldn't say boring but you know the less exciting which is finance um we had curriculum last week so um tonight we're going to have a CDL resolution to be voted in support of an upcoming Bill allowing for a holder of a newly created Type S School Bus certificate to operate Type S School Bus without the need for a CDL this will make it much easier for um for to obtain for drivers to obtain the credentials to drive a school bus which will help with our school bus driver shortage um the health insurance update after meeting with two Brokers and reviewing a self-insured option the final bid was 5.5 percent down from a 13.3 percent increase and this provides this is not the most current one but this provides no disruption in insurance coverage for the staff the Food Service update we're expecting a six percent increase and we discussed the past due lunch balances subscription busing update due to the increase in transportation costs and subscription busing fee will increase and the total amount will still be determined and the transportation update as Mr Jones had spoken about the final bids came in 15 percent increase from the prior year which continues the trend of significantly elevated costs and the good news there were multiple bidders and that concludes finance and I think there was just a couple we had our meeting earlier in the week and I think there's been some modifications right so Food Service came in less than six percent okay right Transportation clearly was a good was a good news story yeah it was it was a better news better than we expected and now community relations um we reviewed the good news from the superintendent liaison meeting on May 16th and here are some highlights for Brenner teacher appreciation week was very well organized and all the staff felt strongly appreciated Evergreen they had a great author visit with martinez Neal we also received rave reviews on the parents Facebook as well praised for the cultural diversity in her books to pick mcginn parents came in from each class to help plant seeds in the begin Garden school one on May 23rd they're celebrating differences by creating an I am unique Lobby bulletin board students will dress to express and pack a snack from your culture or your favorite snack nettingham the nettingham charity Club has gathered over 2 000 books to donate to the charity book smiles Terrell Middle School Elena depaolo's grade five student Hannah burchett won the Celeb celebrate American creative writing contest for New Jersey and her essay is being submitted to the National again another award-winning author stated in an interview that the intended audience for the book is middle grade students the book includes references on how to hide internet searches from parents it also normalizes the use of porn and dirty magazines for young children again me personally I wouldn't want my middle school kids seeing that but the problem I have is this school is available in one of our elements and some kids have different levels of curiosity a child seeing the word porn and not knowing what it is could very easily go on a fall and search to see what that word means with catastrophic consequences potentially so again I'm just asking we've got to button up what we're putting in these schools it's in both middle schools and it's in the elementary school right the elementary school is really pushing the limits for a look with this content that's it thanks thank you Mr Morris any other public comment seeing none I will close the public comment section upcoming scheduled meetings so Tuesday May 23rd staff recognition at 3 30 nevergreen new gym Monday June 5th student recognition 7 PM Evergreen new gym Thursday June 8th is an open Agenda meeting and Thursday June 22nd is our regular public meeting anybody have anything for the good of the order I have a couple of things uh nettingham had their clothing drive on Saturday and they had a huge turnout the bags were stacked about four high and the whole right hand side of the building as you look at it and when the truck pulled up to take the bags I don't think all those bags are going to fit in that truck so kudos to the parents and everybody who made any donations to nettingham they're they had a great turnout I want to congratulate Mr Thomas and Dr Duran and their teams for the spring concert last night at the high school The Ensemble the solo The Soloist I didn't bring the program she did this incredible solo performance on a it's called a mob it was a big xylophone looking what's the name of that instrument yes anyway it's very impressive and um just it was a testament to the music program at our high school it was fantastic so well done anyone knows so I have uh two things one I want to congratulate um our Junior board rep on her two-run home run on Saturday against union Catholic it was a exciting game for me that I was able to stay and watch so nice job to the you and the team and on Monday Dr Mast Dr Heise and I attended the outstanding scholar breakfast to recognize our two outstanding Scholars or our valedictorian and our salutatorian this year right that's right so that was everybody in the county so it was uh I think there was 32 schools because Elizabeth has like seven that they bring and then um the magnet school the vote Tech has I think there's five or six there so but it was great it was really well attended really really some interesting Majors um it was really really good nice very well done and and she's in her uniform because I think they won right 11-4 right before this meeting so dedication look at that thank you for being here after such a big day for you pitch today I did not really amazing great yeah off right you pitched on Saturday too yeah can you just give a little low down on yesterday's game yesterday game we started off we were first inning it was 8-0 the second inning it was 9-0 basically by the fourth inning it was 11-0 and we hadn't scored a run yet and then we came in and we scored four in the fourth inning three in the fifth inning I think two in the sixth inning and then we ended up winning it that's awesome and the seventh highest scoring to 11. I'm a school game ever it was crazy that's great but the yeah it was great assistance and where are you in strikeouts I am at 100 [Music] like total career or for the season I'm at 190 no whoa 96 96 for the season and then I'm 12 away from 200 for the career yeah foreign student softball [Music] it has to be slow pitch slow pitch please I don't want to break an ankle so I'll just be handing out drinks I am with you Tanya very fragile at this age maybe t-ball anything else yeah for the good of the order t-ball okay so um we are going to go back and we're gonna we need a motion to go back into executive session to discuss subjects concerning our superintendent evaluation and then we will be back into public when we are concluded but there will be no I mean there's nothing else in public once we come back to public I'm leaving so there will be nothing else okay so do we have a motion to go back into exec we have a second second all those in favor opposed motion carries we're going back into exec thank you everybody and we will be back in public when we're done
