probably in like New Jersey like the way that they had yeah was like I talked to like last year we after we won our state championship like the guy who runs the league came up to me he's also like a coach with old school and he's like oh yeah you guys did a great job on yeah and everybody's coming back next year and he's like oh my God he like I thought we might have had a little bit of a chance but next year yeah next year next year we'll see but we have three we have three people who play who started in the championship coming back but it's like it really is it's a it's a big time te yeah yeah yeah yeah it's like it's kind of like like it's like it's like it's kind of like football where like you have like somebody who's like blocking stuff and then you have some people who are like dealing damage and like do it's like you need everybody to be working and everybody kind of does their own one is like weak then are probably like they're the top 1% of all players in like and like to have them all like on the same team like like they would be anyone one of them would be the best player on the team if they went to and we had all of them together awesome he just turned one last week yeah yeah so yeah almost almost walk like he's able to take a few steps and then couple over yeah yeah no yeah we're having fun seeing go like this but oh that's so much fun great did you name of Theo or like nickname of just the my sister's dog's name is t so tried to stay [Music] go they do they it's only one round that they they just do the first round on Thursday and then tomorrow will be two and three just to extend Prime Time T yeah and then all day Saturday there'll be everything else [Music] go yeah receiv oh wow he went toen State too they ever like had a top 10 pick either it's like they've always been they always win yeah they've always been even like even their down years are like 10 and seven you know like never that's amazing [Music] just start crying today they play Oklahoma oh wow that's huge [Music] is he is he planning on what's he planning on doing like after this is like try to catch on with a practice squad and likeing for yeah so it's work NCA football players AR going to go oh wow oh yeah [Music] yeah Agy maybe yeah training camp invite see if you can impress a couple people [Music] [Music] I told John John [Music] says there two mistakes on I did five yeah it's going to rain in any one of it's going to be yeah yeah EXA you've had to fight the street oh my so many of them that it's been close calls yeah very close calls know good [Music] [Music] [Music] oh nice that's awesome that's pretty cool you I'm really I'm for for good evening welcome to the SC Board of Education Board of Education meeting Thursday April 25th 202 bar i al to the flag of the United States of America and to the for it stands one nation God indivisible and our exective session during executive session we discuss personel report report the suspension and detention report and the legal status report the agenda to Super evening my report is rather short but you might have noticed that the weather is nice and the countown to the end of the year is at about seven weeks and why that is particularly exciting is if you take some time and go to the district website you will see that there there are many many celebrations and athletic games and celebr students so I would encourage everyone to Pi something for example tonight I I really got to watch um our boys volleyball team Crush Westfield only theet of but it was the talent of the player so it's it's worth getting out there thank you you and [Music] openting wased to the public to have advanced notice of and to attend meetings of public bodies at which any business affecting their interest is discussed or acted was such an amazing experience um AOL place and March we had the 27th annual jazz festival which hosted 12 top jazz bands from around the state and they per school this we have National which is INE California so we have 10 kids off there and was work day running activties PL for the kid for the kids they make their own ice cream make lava lamps dirt hups and play with all the animals inot [Music] instr [Music] all right okay Co all right um he everybody congratul together CL three uh so anyway uh so to tell the story of our OverWatch 2 team and our OverWatch 2 season season I have to take you back to April 2nd 2022 where a group of relative strangers students primarily freshman and sophomores hopped onto a bus and went to Ryder University to play in the 2022 OverWatch funs uh on that day we played in deep hun in central who was the defending Champion but ended up losing in the state championship to the High-Tech high laser pass I don't know if you guys knew this I don't know if anybody knew this but Hightech High's mascot is the laser CS that's crazy what a name for uh but anyway we came so close to Winning State Championship with a group of freshman and sophomores um that day and we did not leave that the tournament dejected we left the tournament hopeful and we left the tournament knowing that if we did a couple things different that we would have that we have the capability of having something truly special here so I think it's important to be humble sometimes but I'm not going to be humble at all right ever since that game this team has not lost a game and quite frankly it hasn't been close they worked so hard in between that day and in between the next season to go all the way through and win the state championship going and defeat it and have a little bit of issues in our state championship game last year but then knowing that we came close to losing it again in the state championship working just as hard this past year and coming back even better uh to win another straight undefeated season like the closest thing I was trying to think of ways to kind of explain like or or compare what they have done um and without knowing like explaining how OverWatch works for 25 minutes I really couldn't do that if you're familiar with the 1992 dream team uh who won the Olympics by like an average of like 45 points per game the second that they walked out onto the court and they played for like 2 minutes you're like all right well this game's over that's basically every single game that that we had and we were playing against the other best teams in the state I remember we were playing it was the state semi-finals we were were playing against p tech who at that point was also another undefeated team um actually seated higher than us by from some weird percentage point and like we're in the middle of the third game and I hear one of them talking about how they can't stand how much homework that they have to do after this and another one talking about how excited they will be to take a nap after this game's over just like so much so much better than all of the rest of the competition that it really has been uh amazing to watch as for this season um the biggest challenge that we probably had uh Lewis who uh has been one of our best players uh this game requires a lot of teamwork a lot of uh communication L is also on the bowling team uh and Mr gra bowling coach has been very gracious in like letting us borrow L from time to time but we shifted the schedule up and the bowling playoff dates and our playoff games were on the exact same date so we do not have Lewis for the majority of the season um but luckily uh and I'll just use basketball as an analogy again imagine you're a basketball coach and you're sitting there and you find out that your top score from the year before isn't going to be on the team then you look at your computer and you get an email from somebody saying hey I'm one of the top 5 to 10% basketball players in the nation and I want to join your team that is Antonio right here you were so you were so so so lucky to have somebody who can seamlessly walk into our team uh and quickly assimilate and become a part of it and was willing to work really hard um because again this game is is a lot about team it if there's a win weak Link in the chain if one person isn't doing their job in the game then the whole chain is going to fall apart and Antonio was uh assimilated very easily and he was able to work with the rest of the team uh and and the team came in and prepared every game even though they knew that their season has gone really well came in every game practice prepared like that they were going to face somebody better than um so going through this whole process I set up scrimmages we we that was another big challenge because there wasn't many teams in the state of New Jersey that we were really able to scrimmage against because it wasn't worth scrimmaging we went all over the place we played different colleges and universities we played teams from all over the country I just Googled like OverWatch Champions and insert State here and tried to find other teams that might have helped us build uh and they did very well across all of that um I'm happy to say that the 2024 State Championship uh is actually not the end of the road for these guys um after we won uh and it wasn't as much of a challenge I found a national league that we entered uh and we're playing teams all up and down the East Coast uh over hundred and something teams that are in this bracket and will be in the championship of that next week uh so all from Canada to Florida we've been playing teams we actually finally had a somewhat challenging game we lost our first uh set and came back to win the w three um so it's been it's been amazing working with them honestly like I feel like I feel like I like watched I've been watching a really good movie and or like reading a really good book and it's like had a really big impact on Me Myself and I've been watching these guys play and I'm like telling people I'm like this is amazing they're so good and it's like there's just so much cuz unfortunately it's not like a volleyball game where you could go see us be West it's something that's happening online but to be able to watch them and be a small part of this has been very very special because I truly believe that they're one of the most dominant teams that this school district has ever seen to go to start off as a team of freshman and sophomores go to the state championship and then have two straight undefeated seasons and completely dominate teams in the way that they have has been absolutely amazing um I I hope you guys know like how how great you are because it's it's been great watching us and I really appreciate but I hope they I hope they I hope everybody realizes how special this SCH is because it's been really great watching it uh unfortunately people are graduating we are losing Lewis Nathan and Brian uh so it's not going to be quite the same team but we do have three returners Antonio uh Max and Alex for next year so we're we're really looking forward to you know keeping on gring this program oh yeah of course of course yeah yeah everybody everybody come up U First up is is Max and uh and one of our tps's our TPS Antonio our sophomore TPS Nathan our tank and our two supports Brian and Alex I have our bels [Music] too got the other one boom I'll get I'll get the other belt too yeah one [Applause] please stay but then taking it one step further really cultivating their talent and passion by looking for other opportunities think that's really incredible so thank you for supporting our [Applause] students proud of you and thank you for bringing such honor to the district and thanks for leading them [Applause] Dr has been one big supporter and fan of this group and really a strong promoter thank [Applause] you well thank you for coming in you're welcome to stay for the [Music] [Music] on the agenda is on2 to comment comment on the budget to the podium State your full name and which comments at this time only um as those were who were here at the last meeting um it was brought to our attention there was mistake in one of the slides Mes in fact there were five mes on that that particular slide um and maybe on another slide it was corrected or something I don't know but it seems weird that we're that we voted on something where brought to the attention that there was an actual mistake in the numbers and you know the total was off by 000 I I would imagine anybody if you were voting on your salary and it was $100,000 less than what it was supposed to be that would be something you probably wouldn't vote on so again just don't understand how we had a tenative budget approval with M and it just seems like the vote should have been postponed until that was fully corrected for transparency um and again just putting it out there um I think that's that's an important thing for visibility for people to see you know that we're proactively fixing so anyway just put it out there thanks details all Numb by the county in detail and question ra [Music] [Music] discuss II [Music] school 0164 0165 meeting will be open for 15 minutes for public comments maximum speaker speakers please not use public perod as the opp to listen to concerns not to issues orer into question and answer session or cross examination between the public or individual members please add delegating the authority to investigate the issue to the superintend Vis that's from the New Jersy School Association if you'd like to make a public comment please come to the Podi at this time jry Morris bwood um this is a this is a note I got from Brad Herman he asked if I could uh read this um in a year where it would have been easy to accommodate Passover given that rashash Shana was during the weekend it is even worse that the district completely disregarded the sacred first two days of Passover by scheduling not one but four events that I am aware of these events include a 10th grade Vietnam history trip on the eve of Passover a prek uh book fair and a sixth grade book fair on the second day of Passover and the districtwide Music Festival on the second day of Passover this goes the spirit of the district's and State's policies towards students and staff who are absent due to religious observance every one of these events could have been scheduled during a different week that would have been safely away from Good Friday Easter and uh Passover in the future the district should consult with the public prior to scheduling such again that was from Brad regarding school calendar and and Sac holidays we do really try to prioritize that and we put the school school calendar together in the spring we be doing within the next couple weeks I think part of the challenge that occurs is when changes are made to the calendar and I think that I agree with Dr that on certainly in in the evenings Passover from from um when the celebration begins there there should have been no event schedule and we really work that we did send out a communication reminding people this year it was particularly challenging um I think because usually pass over is a time that we do have spring break and you continue to pay attention to that and better we did send out reminders to to our teachers um that to be be respectful that students are celebrating anday attention to to the board there were six emails that were received to the board from the public and they were forwarded to the appropriate administrat reports Finance meeting we discussed the referendum update and um that there was a community meeting taking place the next day and that taxes will come in June and July State the everon um special healthare um for next year and the fact that we can only go due to available options of the health sta Food Service the selection committee will be formed to rant the biders and we request to do a survey to everyone in the district to gaug what parents staff and students want service on the agenda we have safety gr of $6,000 that from an insurance company we made also Transportation came in CPI and Athletics we're expanding our field cameras we're looking at sound system for the football field we're replacing in the gym for the upper and lower the high school and paying for this out of the operating Bud for andal res so community relations meeting also the same night uh we discussed the new holidays on school inunction Communications the discussion also focus on the crer which holidays are chosen for the calendar there are many factors but most prominent are what is that are want to reflect the diversity of our community which includ staff and trying to choose most holiday and populations with thear representation and very coun coun andent assistant specialist Mr to talk about three different actually three different initi that are in the district first purple week um think purle week is very comprehensive Municipal Alliance as well as T work onle week and there are activities and lessons at every level including Elementary activities that focus on self self love positive messaging um the mental health health awareness Club at the high school when visited elementary schools to send this message Middle School had an assembly from Anthony who is someone over addiction mental health struggle about mental Fitness um then they also spoke about the green do program which our district has been involved in um for years and Dot is about um five standard intervention training where Witnesses are engaged to interrupt situations that are potentially high risk violence um and so our high schoolers been trained um to intervene in such situations and it has focused on the nth grade for the last 10 years um and the they given a curriculum in a 3 to four hour module so that continues and the third initiative that they spoke about was team Mental Health First Aid um and this is a newer initiative in our district last year SPF was the first district in un County to train students Mental Health First a which is a national program it's given to juniors in our district um and it entails learning how to identify mental health needs in other students and how to respond to their mental health needs by going to trusted adults SPF was recognized at Mental Health Association for training more than 600 students and um due to it success the grant was extended for one more year eight teachers are certifi instructors of the mental health first and health teachers and um one Med specialist I believe and um it's been so successful in continuing in the future the district might extend type of training to parents and finally in discussing um mental health counseling and wellness we had a visit from li jinsky who the high school um sorry president of the mental health awareness Club at the high school and she discussed with the curriculum commit ESS of mental health awareness fair at the high school which occurred on April 4th she let us know that 16 organizations came to table and nine organizations gave short presentations um she also educated us on the mission of the mental health awareness club which basically is providing a safe space for those who might be struggling with mental health and providing them with community so there's a lot going on for our student is very exciting um and second agenda item that we talked about curriculum Dr talking to us about an exensive survey that was developed in terms of engaging your staff that with AI um and what I mean by that is um their knowledge around it and their experience in using AI in education and in their Liv so staff will be asked about their use and attitude around use AI in the last six months and their interest in using it um educationally during the school year survey will de deep into areas as that um what what staff knows about AI how they've gotten their information which tools have they used if they ever if they not used it why not what types of activities they participated in such as research or trainings um and then asking for any examples that they might have to share um and so we'll look forward to getting the results of that survey and our next meeting isil April 11 also task force um our previous task force stud discussions with dist Administration and we've discussed different ways to create seen heard also our student involves [Music] respess students [Music] also meeting schedu for 2425 Shar with the questions super okay 2425 meeting dates on the agenda march1 meeting and the trips that are listed as well as the nursing service plan for 2425 person yes I ask the to approve the personel agenda that we discussed this [Music] evening Miss barie [Music] yes students number and number four iset same number [Music] is number 11 [Music] any question discuss any it in favor any opposing polies CS discuss in [Music] motion carries any new I will rep group they gave me which was March they held specific meeting that was just for parents and caregivers atbr and were able to feedb and with one another and bring that Dr Dr which I believe is something that we're doing um the April meeting was focused Onision of thews anding for elections for the 2425 I'm back on and also withe Dr Dr Mass discussion just about concerns General communication transition and inclusion um I attended the meeting on the uh April and I really was just Away by how um well this group has come together and truly at this point now where they got all processes and procedures in place start rolling out actual items and so that Mee some of the things that we discussed inclusion Benes these are all things that I think is getting excited to sort of P out um and start looking at what their next big goals are but more importantly I think for as a parent and um as someone on meetings you have a student who has4 this is a group of parents that you can reach out to for advice information and then when come up with soltions questions and resources to us their communication a strong shout out to the team together group and enal services thank you thank you and of schols State on April 17th and uh we had a wonderful speaker and author Jennifer Wallace and um she has written a book I got it yet but I intend to never enough and um so uh she was she started writing this book because um she said the life her children were leading such a different life from what she led when she was a child um and so she talked about uh some of the kind some various data about um challenges to schools um she mentioned that high achieving schools are not exempt um that they have two three times more substance abuse and anxiety disorder issues um and um she had interviewed over 6500 parents um and um found out that 75% of those parents um felt responsible for their their children's success 83% believe that uh uh they uh were even more responsible I forget the terminology she used at 87 of the parents Wishful related to their their students and their success um and they were the parents were very conflicted because they wanted their children to have life were nostalgic about their job they wanted their children to wish their children would have life that they had had gr up um and um she talked about fact that there that a lot of this parent parenting is very intensive and that there really is a better way and and really the what she was talking about is um that um she also surveyed children um and um primarily 18 to 20 year olds and um she uh 70% of the children felt that parents valued them more when they were successful and loved them more when they achieved um and um so uh they they felt they mattered and the I guess the contrast that she was talking about and emphasizing was mattering was the term that she used um and uh the need for kids to feel like they were valued by their parents despite success and GTA and grades and um whether they had a no no and um some of the quotes from students were I wish they would have my parents would have understood grades are everything I wish my parents understood it's okay not to be exceptional and everything and along those lines um and um basically I think she was saying that parents love their kids unconditionally but children don't always know that that's not always what they feel um and that she also talked about a lot of parents feel like they don't matter um in their jobs or in life she talked about the difference between belonging to something and mattering and it's just all very intriguing um there were others there would e that she was excellent and recomend the book when achievement culture becomes tox what we can do about it also add that she was talking about mattering and she has started website of the organization mattering movement.com um interested looking into that um talk about ideas in different districts that things that different districts have tried to try to to improve absolutely there is aot and also at the meeting which we always always do Garden State Coalition of schools um is really our working Advocate coordinating with all the other professional organizations there's a lot going on in Trenton as usual um we're part of a literacy working group um and um there was a lot of discussion around the budget um there's a vouch Bill an online bill an observation Bill freedom to re Char School legislation there's a lot going on and you know know you're getting anyone schools know short turn St St approved the approve normal dat Works work well we did Amy I mean Amy win and I went to a I think it's the first I think it'll continuing um but we went to a women's leadership conference sponsored by New Jersey school board um we were really glad we went it was excellent um as if we hadn't had mattering sort of brought to our attention um I know one of the sessions I attended was also about mattering um with um some other information was shared and I also went to an interesting uh one on uh equity and developing Equity mindsets um and the um the whole sessions were excellent I thought they had a good and a good panel at the endc Excell disc [Music] interest that we need to approve one is for Teacher Appreciation Week the second one is for National Nurse Day and the third one is resolution to be used the all favor and that BRS us to the second public comment any topic meeting will be open 15 minutes for maximum minutes per speaker speakers assing superintend items business functions and other board business will be heard first time May address other matters speakers please to the your full name and town you res period as an opportunity to listen to Citizens concerns but not debate issues or enter into a question and answer session or cross examination between the public and the individual members Please be aware that not all issues will be brought to the board meeting tonight will be resolved this evening boards May respond to the public comment by seeking additional information or delegating authority to investigating the issue by the superintendent or design that's from Jersey School Board Association if you'd like to make a public comment please come up at this time Mor manwood um I noticed in the the online uh YouTube video was was uh truncated it wasn't the full meeting from the last one so I don't know how that happens or why it would get cut off but it was probably about 10 minutes at the end and again we have useful things like tonight like with you talking about that author and things like that I think it's it's a it's kind of a disservice that people don't get some good information that could be at the end of the meeting anyway so if there's some way to look into that I think that would be great um second thing is since this is the part one of the things that kind of cut off I talked about um the social justice teacher Academy again just to reiterate what I said in the last meeting I think it's it's kind of a disservice to um students that may not be interested in social justice that they don't have just a teacher Academy it's a social justice teacher academic um and the problem with social justice is your social justice is your neighbor's social injustice Nightmare and so you can have two people who have completely different ideas of what social justice is and it just leads to problems and I think we're all seeing this playing out in our universities as we as we speak I thought i' I'd just add this this one anecdote of uh an interview of a student at uh New York University again they uh they take top 10% in uh in the class uh in the graduating class so this is this is the top notch top tier they said the the the interviewer said why are you protesting I don't know I'm pretty sure there's something about Israel turns to another person why are we protesting the other protester says I wish I was more educated protester number one says I'm not either and I again I think if we focus we focus get back to focusing on the basics and things like that and tone down that this the social justice thing I think you you create a problem where you have teachers who then are encouraged by that to become activists and impose their uh social activism on the children and it's not uh I don't think it's fair to parents I don't think it's fair to the kids I don't I think the the the teacher should be neutral on things like that and I think I think these types of programs create a problem so um that's basically it and like I said I think I think it's something we should really think of reeval in just calling it a teacher Academy it's just makes more sense um why why you have to throw Social Justice part into it doesn't make sense to me thanks to the mees the regular public meeting will [Music] be at 7:30 ex session and the public at on Tuesday May 21st will in the ever gym and on Thursday June 20th our regular public meeting public portion at 8 location is to be determined executive session will be at 730 at this time have for the of saw in the agenda today that there was that we put on um and conversations I had with all had but I thought it was helpful for the public to know and I really want to give a shout out to the staff um for always looking for grant opportunities and partner opportunities um as a nonprofit person education obviously I really ADM thank Township weely together more importantly I think um sometimes the watching teachers and administrators seeking out unique opportunities and funding resources um and so while passing our with dollar I really think our district and individual Department teachers always seeking a unique education opportun but truly funding and being resourceful and at that point and our partnership togethers and opportunties finding n it was it was really fabulous it was a puet show a different all of the performance all of the singing was very my four-year-old was able to was really really good was good he only last 40 minutes so all the St has been packing and packing and packing we all know moving is not easy and having to move out of this space um is a challenge and people will find us somewhere wherever we're meeting but I want to thank all the staff you know we don't have don't have M you know so so um we have employees all the same time going and just UMES and then St take over come Friday not yours let's go yeah everybody that take your child work a child in my office might be my classroom next [Music] year consist it's crazy drop off I hope everybody watch the gles soes they caner as
