of you I'm sure remember we've talked about it a few times the district put out an RFP in Spring uh to explore the possibility of uh changing uh attorney attorney firms for the board um a a small Committee of the board uh participated in a couple interviews uh just a couple weeks ago uh with two firms that we decided to to explore um and I'm happy to welcome uh Doug sylvestro from the bush Law Group uh who is the firm that I I would like to recommend uh that the board approve to represent the stanh Hope Board of Education moving forward um so I invited Doug out to tell uh you a little bit about himself and about the firm uh and I shared with him that you will likely have uh some some questions so uh Doug welcome to Stan hope hang on got to turn your microphone on tap it at the base there you go thank you you're good it's there you go on okay uh I'm not usually at this side of the podium to dance for these things so apologies um as superintendent said my name is Doug sylvestro I'm a senior partner and one of the founding attorneys of the Bush Law Group uh we're located in matachin New Jersey but we represent school districts all over the state was actually just in High Point last night for teacher contract negotiations so this was actually a breeze to get to compared to them uh personally I'm in Bridgewater so straight shout up to it 60 you guys uh nice and easy um we are a a school Law Firm we have 17 attorneys uh two of which do matrimonial law the other 15 do school law and exclusively School law uh Partners Associates Council of counsil uh we have uh people of every level of experience but everyone does school law day in and day out uh we represent uh around 90 school districts and charter schools in the state uh we do not represent parents against school districts the only time we're litigation with other schools is on behalf of one of our clients which hopefully doesn't very happen happen very often uh we represent all but I believe three districts in Three Counties across the state um as far down as Kate May and Gloucester County as as high up as as you guys here in Sussex um so we kind of get all over the place but uh the thing we pride ourselves on is getting back to you guys whenever you need us making sure that uh you don't feel like you're getting short Change just because we represent a number of districts we make sure that it doesn't matter how big or small a district is uh we represent smaller districts than you guys uh and some quite large you know fourth fifth largest school districts in the State uh everyone gets the same treatment for us and so we want you guys to feel that way we're looking to build a long-term relationship uh if you guys do decide to move ahead with us tonight um we don't want this to be a one-year gig uh where we try to make as much money off as possible we want this to be a long-term relationship that you know you guys get to know me we get to know you and this is something that is a longlasting um partnership uh I can give the Spiel for uh much too long you have a meeting to get to uh so if anybody has any questions for me I'm available questions um how many districts does your uh firm handle that are similar in size to stanle uh at least a dozen uh if not more like I said we do uh over 90 total that includes Charters a lot of the charter schools tend to be smaller um but in terms of uh we do a number of K8 districts I can think of a handful off the top of my head that are um about your size we even have some K12 districts that are uh your size are smaller just because of the the demographics um uh Sussex County you guys would be our I believe third or fourth uh District in the county uh but as I said we have districts Statewide that are run the gamut from anywhere from 200 300 kids to about 18,000 in your view working with those districts what do you see is the most common problem among all those districts with this size of this size uh and I mentioned this this came up as well during the the interview with the committee uh so if some of you have heard this before you you read my mind that was my question yeah every school district regardless faces a lot of the same legal issues but I think that the biggest challenge of the smaller districts are um every change is that much more of a sea change right if you're in a district of you know 15 plus thousand kids 20 some facilities multiple levels of administration some new law comes out there's somebody to implement it some political change uh new guidance comes out it it's just kind of a drop at the bucket if it happens in a small District like this it could impact you know your day-to-day function something like the state aid formula changing could completely change things you need a student who needs an out of District placement that you weren't expecting that could have a big impact on a smaller District so it's those types of things that in some larger districts is kind of just run run-of-the-mill dayto day you guys have to pay that much more attention to here because of the the potential impact on the size of the district so it's not so much the issues are different they just might have a bigger impact in in a smaller District thank you y how many schools do you yourself represent so in terms of lead councel uh about 15 or 16 and then the way that the firm works you know if someone else's lead Council on a district but they need my expertise on something they call me um so I I uh for lack of a better phrase touch uh a good 30 to 40 districts at any given given time uh in terms of again lead councils different for some place I am their special education attorney only some places I am their uh Contracting attorney only um and then other places I'm coming to their board meetings every single month so it it all depends on the degrees at which we work with with the particular districts thank you yep can appreciate tough to answer but on a general day you get you get a phone call from the district what's the general response time are you able to get back the day of or is it I'm in court or on the phone it's immediate um if I'm one of those two things uh and and superintendent may start to get used to this you'll get that automatic call you back text but as soon as I'm physically available to return that call you get that return call it will be same day again you know barring some kind of crazy emergency or those very odd days where I go from say Court to negotiations to board meeting to whatever um I may just and and if that's the case if I can't return the call that day your Administration will know when I'm going to return the call but it's it's same day is our goal thank you yep anyone else any other questions no okay so you'll see this on the agenda this evening go ahead no no I was just saying thank you oh yeah okay thank you thank you everybody uh I'm not GNA hang around if that's okay with everyone fine thank you and have a great night have a great night thank you so much thank you good night all right um second presentation tonight uh and you know typically uh I'll have the screen up and you know when we do the test score presentation uh that big one's going to be in October uh because of um when the access for Ells which is the assessment that our English language learning students take each year because of when the scores were released to us I couldn't wait until October to to give the presentation because we would then be out of compliance so this is why I'm doing it today in the interest of saving significant time and doing the setup I printed out the the page for you assuming also we wouldn't have public um shouldn't have assumed that but I did um I do have extras if they were here uh so just very briefly we administer this uh assessment Every Spring to monitor the English language development of our students who are classified as multilanguage Learners um we tested 18 students last year uh which was one less than the year prior um the uh the levels that you'll see right ranging from one through six one being the the more limited language proficiency six ranging all the way to the I'm I'm pretty much ready to exit this program um we had much higher uh skill and language attainment this year than we did the previous year I think that's probably because we had an influx of students who were coming here right from out of country two years ago and they've now spent a little bit more time with us uh it for me it's nice to see that what we're doing uh to an extent is helping um and I'm I'm super excited I was sharing with Matia before the meeting uh how excited our teachers and students are this year to be able to offer additional support to our English language Learners right we brought in uh the Rosetta Stone program to work with our sixth seventh and eighth grade and the main reason for doing that is to free up time for our Our World Language teacher and ESL teacher to spend with these English language learners so half of her day is spent supporting these students whether it be through a pullout a push in into a general education classroom or through you know collaboration meetings with their teachers to share the with them strategies that they can use in the classroom uh to to hear their questions their concerns to share resources um so I believe we anticipate four students from this test that will exit our program this year you have have to achieve a score of four and a half or above which we've had four students that did that and you also need to have a teacher recommendation to exit the program so we anticipate four students uh no longer needing English language support um which is uh really exciting for them and it's really exciting for us because it also allows our teachers to spend you know Miss Connelly to spend that much more time with the other kids who are just emerging um happy to answer any questions that you have uh but that's pretty much all the information I have on this assessment I'm looking at them they're on here these are kids K to8 these are kids K to8 so we don't know where I can't share individual grade levels because if you have fewer than 10 students tested at that grade level then you have to suppress the scores to maintain confidentiality so this is just the way that I've presented this each year um again I I wouldn't be able to give you any results if I went by grade level one other question sure Level One MH uh these are are all new to the school this year uh I don't know for sure well these are scores from last spring so these are kids who were in our in our school last year I don't know for sure if every one of those kids at level one had just come that that uh last year to our school but if it wasn't last year it was it was very very recent uh these are all students who had did come from other countries and it may even include kindergarten students too one last like how many different languages it's predominantly Spanish uh but we do have one or two other students who speak different languages questions thank you thank you next up is the correspondence targeted review child find requirements talk about talk about that a little bit uh so we received the letter that uh we put in correspondence uh I believe at the end of August um each year uh the office of special education the Department of Education um monitors districts uh to make sure that they're in compliance uh we have over the last I want to say seven eight years maybe six or seven years uh had excellent numbers in compliance after my first two or three years here uh that not being the case um so we we pride ourselves there in this situation 16 students uh were were pulled their records pulled and we uh we input the date that the student was approved for testing in the child study team and then the date in which they actually have their uh IEP closed the the the case closed and that has to be within a a 90day window uh we had one student of those 16 who uh was at 92 days uh in further investigation with our team we have notes in our system that the uh parent was unavailable for the first two attempts that uh for us to hold this meeting which pushed us out of compliance if that was coded as uh as it was that the parent had pushed the meeting out we actually wouldn't have had a a compliance issue for some reason and we're trying to figure out why um it was coded that a CST member wasn't available which wasn't the case uh it could have been an error in in inputting the code it could have been an error at the uh in NJ smart or at the department we're trying to figure that out at the end of the day it doesn't matter because we're out of compliance we knew what we needed to do to fix it uh in order to make this go away so to speak we needed to uh upload the 10 most recent students uh who were determined to be tested for child study team and the were closed out uh of that process nine of those 10 we have absolutely no issues with the the one one student who we weren't in compliance with we have a justifiable reason the student ended up having to actually leave the district for a period of time to receive medical treatment and wasn't able to come back and finish their evaluations within that time frame that's an accept acceptable reason and I anticipate that this finding will will go away and it won't be an issue for us but uh to make sure that there's full transparency with the board I found it um uh important to put it on correspondence so that you understand the work that we're doing questions thank you thank you still you superintendent report keep going very very topheavy with with with my reports uh actually I think the the superintendent's going to be pretty reports going to be pretty short uh just wanted to report on the opening of school uh it it not got to find some wood to knock on it feels really smooth uh it feels uh calm um we're very well staffed uh I don't want to say fully staffed because we do have a resignation um that you'll see on the agenda tonight but for the most part we are very much staffed we're very much supported uh the kids have come back hungry to learn our staff seems rejuvenated uh we don't have a million projects hanging over our heads uh like we had the two previous years uh we're we're wrapping up and closing out this HVAC project uh in fact I think they're going to be on site tomorrow uh the next step is going to be really just making sure that our team understands how to use the controls the temperature controls um but other than that I think we're in really good shape um uh moving on to teacher in service days which is really the same as opening the schools uh I wanted to personally thank uh Mr and Mrs moscatello the moscatello family as they have every year since I've been here provided a breakfast on our first in service day uh for our staff our very appreciative staff uh and I also wanted to thank the Harold family on day two uh provided lunch for the staff as a thank you for the the many years that your two girls uh had come through this school again very much appreciated and uh it's always nice just to to know when they come back they get that immediate sign of appreciation um after you know embarking now on on a long school year um we did have uh a couple different training sessions for our par professionals and our teaching staff uh Ken green came in uh in the morning of day two uh presented on how teachers uh could benefit from teaching with their strengths we focus so much on our weaknesses and improving the weaknesses and their belief is if you focus on your strengths rather than ignoring them and focusing on the weaknesses that that can actually make you more productive uh when you're teaching in your classroom uh and we had Michelle Lockwood who is our contracted behaviorist uh who came in and to work with our par professional staff on um you know how to work with uh uh the students that have needs appropriate um space appropriate level of challenge I think one of the hardest things for for most adults especially you know paraprofessional adults who maybe don't have the the years of educa of education training that our teachers have is they want to come in and they kind of want to Mother the kids right it's it's almost like a natural instinct when in fact that's not what we want to do we want to take a step back we want to have our kids you know whether they have special needs or not really try have the opportunity to fail and then step in and help build them up and show them where they went wrong so that they can fix their mistakes and learn from their mistakes and I think that's something that that overall we've struggled with in the past so we we had a specific training on that and I think it was really well received um back to school night was last Thursday on the 12th uh K5 preschool to five was pretty well attended uh I can't necessarily say the same for middle school but it was nice to see some of our parents come out um um you know the it's it's great to see our teachers the energy that they bring um and the passion that they bring for our kids uh I as a teacher always loved back to school night it was my my one night to really show these parents that your kids are in good hands and I think our teachers all took that very very seriously uh so it was a very successful night um I'm going to skip four real quick because I I noticed uh and I my apologies I forgot to add the HIV and suspensions on there we have zero hibs or suspensions so far uh through this current school year um and you'll see that reported in the agenda um the last item I just wanted to report on um is our overnight trips for the school year uh I do have a contract uh that I'm recommending for approval from a new travel agency um a toz uh A toz travels uh for I think nine years prior uh maybe 10 years prior we used a company called ETA um they've been very good to us uh but you know over the years we felt as though there are some things that we'd like uh to see Chang some things that we'd like to see improved uh so we reached out to some of our colleagues in the area we we looked for recommendations and this was a company that came highly recommended um so you'll see that the the um uh the agenda items for the trip for the Washington DC trip for 8th grade are a little bit different than what we've had in the past one of the upgrades that we see is that uh the food uh is better quality than what we've received in the the past I can speak firsthand for the years that I went on the trip there were a couple places that I I don't know if I would have taken my family to um and they have additional vouchers whereas for a couple meals uh in the previous trips we've asked parents to send cash with their children um some kids spend all of their cash on that first day and are in a tough spot not pointing fingers or anything uh but in this case they'll be given a voucher for for the places that they that they stop at that they don't have to worry about carrying cash with them um one of the changes that I'm recommending for this year that I want to be able to open up uh for discussion if anybody has uh any points that they'd like to make or any questions um I'm not at this time recommending that we move forward with an overnight trip for our seventh grade uh since I got here and and Dr ninski and I he's previous superintendent uh were floored when we got here and realized that our sixth grade doesn't overnight our seventh grade doesn't overnight our eighth grade doesn't overnight because that's it's just not typically what you see in most middle schools um for years we maintain that sixth grade does the camping trip e8th grade did a trip to Boston uh and I'm sorry six seventh grade did the trip to Boston and eighth grade did the trip to DC um the the pandemic kind of changed things a bit obviously we weren't going overnight we weren't staying in hotels with multiple people even busing was an issue uh we did a day trip that was combined with our seventh and eth we went to Philadelphia we came back we didn't spend the night for a couple couple years after that uh we combined our seventh and eighth graders and they went on the same trip with the idea being that uh sth and eighth grade would go to DC one year and then seventh and eighth grade the next year would go to Boston condensing into one trip uh would have a a lesser impact on the school day and on education because we don't have teachers out chaperoning uh we're not missing kids um and for that first year it was very successful one of the main reasons it was so successful is because we had a very very small eighth grade class which to be honest if we didn't combine we likely wouldn't have been able to go on the trip it would have been cost prohibitive because we only would have had maybe 18 19 kids uh and it it just wouldn't be able to afford it last year we attempted the same thing um and you know neglectfully I I take full full credit for this uh we ended up having more kids than we can actually keep on one bus Which NE necessitated a second bus which significantly increased the cost of the trip um because the parents were initially given a price right we didn't feel as though it was appropriate to say hey now you have to Fork out three or 4 hundred more dollars for your kids to go on this school trip um the HSA stepped up in a huge way to support us it was about a $10,000 increase on this trip the HSA supported us by contributing 5,000 the district contributed 5,000 so that the the parents wouldn't feel that cost increase um we have larger eighth grade student counts and seventh grade student counts this year so if we were to combine that trip again you're looking at two buses probably going to be a very similar expense to what it would have been and I cannot ask the HSA to contribute that nor should I ask the the the district to contribute that much money to offset that cost um my other major concern and this has been a concern of mine you know for years for those of you who have been on the board for some time um the cost of the trip for the parents is is quite large uh you're talking between $7 $800 for each of these overnight trips in seventh and eth grade we've had families that have come through with twins we've had families that have come through with as as many as three kids in the middle school at a time um and it it kind of puts those parents in a tough spot because you don't want to say no to your kids but at the same time in some cases that's that's that's the food that you have to put on the table right that's that's the mortgage that's the the car insurance um coming from where we're at with inflation increased costs uh my current recommendation right now is to do a day trip for our seventh grade uh which is yet to be determined um our sixth grade would still go to Fairview Lake that's an overnight but it's it's local it's very inexpensive it's about $120 to the parent uh and it's in our County um but still doing the Washington DC trip for our eighth graders um the contract that we have uh if you were to get a quad room uh which is four students per room is a cost of $769 to the families the HSA has done a wonderful job I can't speak to what's going to happen this year um because we haven't had that conversation but the HSA has been able to offset some of that cost for our families throughout the years to decrease that a bit um it's also a a cost to the district as well uh the district is responsible for paying for students uh who are free and reduced lunch who aren't able to attend the trip um we are paying for substitutes for teachers chaperoning we're paying for um for stiens for teachers to chaperon overnight so I do want to say Chris you might be able to help me out with this we we budget I think in the neighborhood of five or $6,000 a year right for this trip that's correct um for each trip for each trip right so that's we also cover for seventh and five or six for the eth yeah we cover any extra chaperon rooms things like that if we have 1 to one8 needs or things like that going on so for all of those reasons right that's my recommendation for this school year and then obviously each year we we revisit and we discuss and we figure out what's going to be best for our our students for our parents and for our school um I wanted to give everybody the opportunity to either ask questions share voice concerns uh any other discussion you want to have on the topic of overnight trips so I don't know if we would get a lot of community engagement with within the middle school because I know sometimes that's challenging obviously for this year time constraint wise we can but I would kind of like to see for next year some kind of survey out to the parents as to their feelings on only in eighth grade overnight and seventh grade being a day trip because it could be that the vast majority are like this is too expensive to do every year it could be that there's a majority that say I don't want to see this go away I think it's worth asking the question whether or not as a district that's decided later I think having the information could be helpful either way so just a suggestion okay definitely a topic for for discussion think you put a lot of thought into it and a lot of research based on a numbers year to year and taking a look at the cost I think your recommendation for the year is very balanced I I really appreciate that there's still that effort to provide the overnight experience for kids as they're not only in sixth grade but eighth grade even even just having one overnight experience in a middle school is a wonderful thing that a lot of districts aren't able to do so I think that's fantastic uh you know the Outdoor Experience I think is awesome for a sixth grader and and having that eighth grade experience is is wonderful and I I certainly appreciate the concern of back-to-back years of overnight trips and I think your recommendation is is spoton for the community anything else the only thing other thing I'd like to mention and I and I think this is a great change with the new travel company that's being recommended the itinerary is a lot more robust than it had been with ETA in the past um and the kids might disagree so in in the previous trip to DC on the third day the kids got to stop at Hershey Park where they really didn't have a ton of time it was kind of a time filler I'm sure the kids all had a great time Hersh Mars fabulous this time around the itinerary has half to maybe 2third of a day before they leave Washington DC still exploring more of The Monuments and things there are to see there which I think is really great as opposed to losing that third day so that's that's certainly a plus with the new company the itinerary is a lot better yeah there's there's so much in Washington DC um you know and and that's been a topic of discussion for years the the Hershey trip at the end right right the kids don't want to lose it obviously but the goal of this is is to supposed to support the curriculum right and provide a learning opportunity for these kids the other piece that's different is typically we would spend the first good part of the day in Gettysburg um because there's so much in Washington the decision this year was to not do Gettysburg um partially because Gettysburg traveling to Gettysburg is a lot more manageable as well whereas if a parent felt strongly that they wanted their child to have that experience it's easier to bring your child to Gettysburg two two and a qu hour drive than to bring them back to Washington DC to maybe see some things that they weren't able to see again every year we're going to look at this we're going to determine you know what we like what we didn't like um but that's the rationale for for the the itinerary changes for this year I just want to say uh this this as far as for financing with the trips last year Rockaway burrow had a fundraiser for the for the eighth grade trip that went to Washington they had a professional wrestling match and they you you laugh you laugh but the amount of I was at it even though I don't go wrest I thought you card I was the guy in the in the stand yelling at the wrestling but anyway uh they made quite a bit of money to offset the trip that might be something maybe the HSA might want to do or maybe the school itself to to uh you you'll be surprised the amount of people that you get to go when you tell them it's for the kids for their trip just something to think about that there's not a lot of work involved you might have to have the custodians help with the chairs and stuff but um they made a I don't know exactly how much but the guy said they made quite a bit of money towards the trip the HSA has always done a tremendous job raising money for these trips uh and it it it's a lot of work that's a lot of work um fundraising from the school side of it uh is handled by our eighth grade advisers directly with the students you know we've sold candy before you know they've done some fundraisers where you know what those kids sell goes directly to their trip um but that's a it's a great idea it's definitely something worth exploring yeah it's not the gym here is big enough to to house that uh function as long as they don't scratch our new floor no no no they put they put stuff down don't worry uh they put stuff down matter of fact um he's trying to get Len Valley to uh to have a wrestling Mas so that they don't have to have all these car washes and stuff you'll be surpris the amount of money that people will spend when it comes for the kids just a suggestion thank you that's all I have all right anything on curriculum or should we move to the curriculum committee just you you'll see on the agenda that we do have the English language arts curriculum up for approval I sent that out uh I think about a week and a half ago um if you you have questions obviously I'm happy to answer it but I think I I I read a a blurb from Miss dialo principal dikalo last month uh that gave some updates on what was changed and what was required thank you all right Jen all right well Steve covered almost everything we discussed in committee so I'm not going to repeat those um I was really happy to see the variety of community organizations that came to back to school night um so I thought that was really great repr presented a lot of different things that people might not have known that were out in the community so hopefully people stopped and talked to them and took advantage of the information um along the lines of the HSA was it back to school night and real quick Alyssa white asked me if I wouldn't mind sharing tonight about the upcoming vendor fair so they've got everything set for October 5th at Lakeland um they've got food trucks they've got vendors they've got all the things what they don't have are volunteers so just passing it along to anybody in the community you do not have to have a child in this school you simply have to have a desire to give two hours of your time if anybody needs more information they can email Alyssa HSA stop schools.org she will happily discuss it um she will happly share out a link and then you know it takes a community to make a great event but they're they're set on their end for having all the things lined up they just need some volunteers the date on that I'm sorry October 5th the Sunday right Saturday Saturday the rain date and going to hope it doesn't rain is for that Sunday okay the same night as Lenn Valley's marching band home show so you can roll right from one into the other exactly it's and it's where um over on Lakeland Little League field so up right behind the high school so so really claim your parking spot early and then stay in here all the great bands that are competing at at the home show lenp is going to be running um a shuttle I think on that day from our school to for overflow parking my best suggestion to anybody on this part of Stan hope is to walk the path it's beautiful it has new lights yes and you won't have to deal with trying to move your car out of the crowded area I strongly recommend it for the high school graduation every year that's what I do the park on this side I walk the path and I wave to everybody else who's stuck in traffic as I'm driving home they didn't happen to say what kind of volunteers they're looking for they are looking for people to help check in food trucks they're looking for people to direct some parking lot traffic um tables there's some table setup that still had some spots I think they still need some people for concessions um for the different time slots and like I said they have it set up in a two-hour time slot but even if somebody can just give an hour they're really flexible if you say to them I can give you the hour between 11 and 12 if there's a slot open they will happily take your volunteerism and that's all I have cuz Steve literally covered everything else we talked about we should do it in reverse I'll talk at the end of the meeting you could talk absolutely at the beginning it's fine very good gil on to you business services um that was it was a pretty short meeting um the agenda had five items on it uh the first was attorney uh interview process um from listening to Steve and uh Mata talk it was uh a very good process and they are very pleased with the outcome they seem to be uh highly touting the person that they recommended here tonight and uh uh listening to them speak uh Matt agree that they uh vote for approving this person oh yeah certainly okay um next was construction update um we had two things that were under con we were discussing uh with one was the oil tank removal and that the tank does go underneath part of the Curve being in the sidewalks so it's a little bit bigger project than what thought what we thought the uh architect was supposed to come within a day or two to meet with Steve that just didn't happen and it still hasn't happened yet so as soon as that gets done that that'll be discussed um the way it's looking with permits and timelines and uh time lines of work being done by Architects um it seems like it's pointing to more of a springtime project than happening in the late fall so uh we'll just have to see what happens with that um the um the classrooms the science rooms uh the architect was in looking at Rooms measuring out for some doors and changes in door jams and things like that he was also looking uh for a lock project I believe it was it was something that uh Mr yagnam brought up at our last meeting um that I we haven't quite explored yet right now it's just a matter of measuring determining how many doors which doors were looking to replace uh and as an additional safety mechanism that's something that I'm going to look into and explore to see if it's it's feasible uh in our school but no action uh has been taken on that just yet um you also discussed where the uh the status of the current HVAC program everything's installed uh where there were problems in classrooms where uh mistakes were made in their measurements and were exposed pipes all those pipes have been covered and that they will be uh removed as soon as the uh finished product gets in um right now they're looking to balance out the system making sure the air flow is good and the air exchanges are meet all code and um that's about it for construction update School opening uh went very well um staff was glad to be back there's the place looked great the hallways looked great everything looked bright and shiny gym floor being done right the gym floor and the hallways buffed up and I I also think uh coming into school for the teachers having a signed contract is always a nice thing to happen a little extra step in their uh movement that that's good and the audit is supposed to start uh this Monday right the audit is it this week yes the 23rd right yes okay and then the Food Service program um just discussed the menus and lunch sales uh first week eligibility increased uh Medicare students are now eligible for free and reduced breakfast and lunches so um that was it everything on here that's on the agenda the committee felt a positive vote on those any questions about how many kids do we have taking advantage of the breakfast uh I think that we were up to at the end of last week 15 to 20 kids I don't know if you have more accurate numbers in that I know when I left it was 20 yeah it was about 20 and we're still trying to make sure that everyone understands what is uh for like what's available to them right the free and reduced lunch kids without without waving and pointing and making a spectacle of them right making sure that they're they understand that they're entitled to this uh free of charge um and letting others know that if they wanted to purchase you know breakfast items they can do that as well I also met with some of our uh younger teachers personally and went around beginning of last week just to remind them and that these students do have these programs and if they want to shoot them on down they can we'll help them out and you know get them the food that they need to have so they're not stuck at 10:00 with nothing at snack time some kids are choosing to eat here in the morning morning they're eating it real quick and getting to home room um some of them are bringing it to to their classroom and that's their snack for the day they're you know around 9:30 10:00 they're breaking for snack and they're they're having that breakfast are they allowed to eat in their home rooms between 8 and 8:15 uh we're we're trying to not have them meat in their home rooms um primarily because they'd be maybe one of two or three kids that are eating right and then and then you get the well I want that too and then the parent doesn't want to purchase it for him and it just kind of adds another level so how are we addressing the middle schoolers who don't have a snack they're EA the on eating in here okay yeah some of the younger kids are coming in early enough too and they're choosing to do that but middle school if they're doing breakfast then it's it's here before home room and we also have some coming to buy buy breakfast and eat here because now their friends are doing it so it's now a little bit of a common thing great work in progress you know navigating some challenges just because this is all brand new to us uh but I'm I'm confident that that at some point this year we'll we'll be smooth anything that helps keep kids from being hungry because they can certainly learn better if they're not hearing their stomach rumbled I actually had a question uh it's pertaining to the new boiler system do we have any type of Wireless monitoring system uh I know that once control is given to uh Frank our facility supervisor he can control it by phone so yeah it's more in terms if uh if a pipe burst there's a lot of monitor protective device you're talking about protective devices not necessarily really monitoring so as an example uh it tracks the amount of water going in and out so if there's Los if they're losing gallons of water they get your insurance program not with the purchase of the boiler no I understand it I'm just curious if that's something that we tied into these new system I don't have an answer I don't have an answer to your question but I will I'll get it I know tons of stuff about it if anybody the commercial liability insurer most of the um liability larger ones I know we're with the pool in New Jersey um so I don't know if they do it but most commercial liability insurers will give you those monitoring devices for free because it prevents a loss spot on yes and under State regulation it's now allowed in New Jersey look at you it wasn't for a long time we did a lot of work to get those things allowed yeah yes I didn't know that they were considered a rebate or an inducement to write with a certain carrier it's a lifesaver yes now they are not in difference between about 30 States $1,200 in damage or $122,000 in damage so so they're a big deal thank you question uh where are we ed services ed services um in August in our August meeting is the last Thursday in August and uh we do that so we have all final approvals on hirings and budgets and all that and our board meetings are the first Monday in September so when that happens a lot of times we cancel that September board meeting which happened this year because there was only less than a week in between when we had the board meeting and the next board meeting so we did not have a board meeting but um things are running smooth the school is open uh we have 55 students um as I told you before the school next door which was a school for special ed students also uh broad step I think was the name they've closed down and uh we're we're trying to see if we could rent or buy that building and be able to expand some programming down there that's it for Ed anybody questions and then just very quickly for me there's nothing new to report on regionalization yet our meeting is Monday 9:23 of the first kind of larger committee group um we have the sample application from Mark magar who is the policy person out of Trenton um so the goal of Monday's meeting is for all four groups to get together and to review it and discuss it and figure out what the committee structures will look like in a timeline for the application so I'll be able to report back on that in October but there's been no movement yet because we don't meet till Monday okay thank you I did have a general question I don't I didn't find it an appropriate time to bring it up because I'm not part of the public and it's not new or old business how's the new preap program going so far so good I mean there's obviously they're three right and four years old so they're getting acclimated to this routine right this transition um when they're here it's great um getting them in the building for a few of them is a little challenging because there's that separation from Mom and or dad um we're working out some some I don't I don't even want to go as far as saying issues with uh arrival in the morning we're trying to find the The Sweet Spot of when the kids should be coming in to avoid the craziness of of the morning but not so late so that we're waiting for one kid for 20 minutes outside right now our window for drop off for for kids who don't have older siblings is 8:15 to 8:30 uh you know I think we can shorten that honestly I think we can probably go 8:15 to 820 because by 8:15 there's really no more cars in the lot they can come in drop off we get in and and we're good to go uh I think this missile is going pretty well um I haven't had complaints doesn't mean that they're aren't complaints I just haven't heard them uh but all in all I think it's uh I think it's been great thankfully we didn't fill the classes uh to 15 like we are were able to because we've already had three legitimate referrals for special education students that'll likely have to get plac in these classes and if we didn't have room for them then we're likely pushing out gened students and that that wouldn't have been good so everything's pretty good though yeah and on my end as a parent it's been going great and I've spoken to other parents um especially morning drop off your your staff goes above and beyond to ensure the kids get right to their classroom everyone's really chipping in um so from my perspective it's going great I just curious uh from your guys then how it's going so we're very very grateful to have the program we're very happy with the teachers that and the work that they're doing um it's uh I think I think it's a a definite positive for the district yes thank you okay that would bring us to the first public session seeing as as we have none we will move on uh travel and work reports were there uh any questions on travel and workshop reports okay minutes for approval uh this is minutes from the board goals and objectives regular meeting mve thank you second yes MO is Carri Personnel can I have a motion please motion second second thank you any discussion questions I did have one question on the hourly stiens for or hourly pay I don't know if it's a stien for detention be it after school or lunch is the reason that the lunch price the the 15 an hour is lower because they're already here during the day it's also shorter shorter okay it's a 40 minute period versus 60 minutes okay but it's still an hourly rate um no it's a per session oh that's not how it reads because it reads 15 an hour oh I believe the contract is a per session that actually makes more sense to me because when I was reading it I'm like well why do they get 15 an hour if it's during the day but after school is 20 an hour we make sure that it the agenda that makes more sense thank you then I have no other questions anybody else with questions comments okay roll call vote please Mrs Harold yes yes Mr Pico yes Mr Valley yes Mr valard yes Mr yagnam yes Mr muscatello yes Mr Shar yes an's name I it's on all I just saw all right business services can I have a motion please motion second second thank you number 10 is is the approval for the lawyer who was here this evening the Law Group can you elaborate on number nine in the Oprah records request just do you want to take that I I'll try to so the state just implemented a new form online that we all have to use for the open public records act where they could come and request uh information from us so nobody's requested inform it's the approval of the form that somebody would need to use if they wanted information okay yes so we all have to follow in toe and this is how they'd like us to do it take formal board action recognizing the new form and that we will be using it moving forward other questions okay roll call vote please Mrs Harold yes Mr Pico yes Mr Valley yes Mr vardo yes Mr yam yes Mr muscatello yes Mrs sharpstein yes motions thank you all right new business any new business quiet group old business I'd like to piggyback on that idea throughout a last meeting regarding the uh 5K using our um 40 acres here um building a course back there I I need to understand the boundaries a little bit and Gil I know you know that land probably better than anyone so I wanted to see if you'd be available to meet me back there to just make sure I'm building a course within set boundaries if we decide to move forward with something like that so that I can have a proposed course to present to the board and um as an option to fund you know have proceeds go to the HSA or have it through the HSA however it needs to be done legally and appropriately um but I would like to be able to walk that property with somebody who knows the boundaries well so I don't I know about where the I don't good enough about so I have maps that I can provide number one yeah I think Brian McNeely from the town might be the best person because he to come up that was part of the he pretty much Tor gave us the tour right and showed us that he spent his childhood back there great so and and there's uh when you say build a course you're talking just outlining where you're going to run you're not going to build structures and those things correct yeah because at that point I really doesn't I really don't think it meets any difference back there at all uh well it could the the property I I thought you said you were going to try and involve lenpy with it it's going to all depend on where our bound are where the trail systems go and how it can be implemented to make a nice flow of a course you don't want to run out and have to turn around on the same Trail we want to make sure that it's fluid right that's why I thought you were going to use lenpy and I was just going to say if you had the agreement with lenpy then it's it's almost right from here right out to Sparta Stan Hope Road yeah it's just good to know because if one part goes on to St St hope we need to obviously notify and get permission and the same with lennyy so uh the map we have yeah and then like you said Brian mcne at the town is really the one who did all of that work perfect yeah I can I can I'll GPS what I think would be best and then we can probably put that over our map and see where we land I'll start by getting you whatever Maps we have and then from there you just let me know what you're looking to do next and when and we'll make ideally spring I think is is attainable um you know and I can ask for more help as we go I'd be glad to help if you need L Market ERS everything from like water stations can make it go out if you want to if you want to walk that with Brian just let me know the day you want to walk and I'll go back there with you yeah all right that would be great thank you okay that would bring us to our second public session oh I'm sorry anybody else have old business sorry no okay second public session but no public and then we have a quick addendum for an executive session that I asked for quickly so it should not be long um can I have a motion please motion second thank you um I have to read this part out loud right be it resolved that Stan hope Board of Education adopts the following resolution whereas the open public meetings act chapter 231 of 1975 permits the exclusion of the public from a meeting in certain circumstances and whereas The stanh Hope board of education is of the opinion that such circumstances presently exist now therefore it beat resolved by The stanh Hope Board of Education County of Sussex and the state of New Jersey that a closed session of this Board of Education where the public shall be excluded will be held at this time for the purpose of personnel be it further resolved that the action of the board with regard to the above entitled matter shall be disclosed to the public at a later date and to the extent that the same is not prejudicial to the interests of the parties involved and would not result in a possible invasion of their right to privacy okay I know it's a lot all right can I have a Voice vote please all in favor thank you any no extensions okay do you want me in or out e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e uh can I have a motion to reenter public session motion second second thank you voice vote all in favor say I I any NOS any abstentions up next adjournment can I have a
