morrettes to come up to the podium with me and for Matt Carlin to join us up here as [Applause] well it's good to see you two back together too it really is before I pass the mic to Cheryl I just want to take a moment to publicly thank Matt for his nearly 30 years of service in Lincoln hover and some of public schools Matt is the ultimate cheerleader with his students teachers staff members and his colleagues and administration he is truly a special and unique kind of leader last year we had our administrators take a strengths assessment so we could learn more about ourselves as leaders and find out how we can use our individual strengths to compliment each other as a team Matt's results showed that his strengths were belief connectedness developer positivity and woo a lot of people think of woo when you see Matt if you know Matt you the results showed his strengths to be that so if you know Matt you were probably not in your head in agreement after hearing those strengths but you're also asking what is woo so woo stands for winning others over and wooers are rarely a loss for words they actually enjoy initiating with strangers because they derive insatisfaction from breaking the ice and making a connection Matt you're you're a woo Matt is all in he is not afraid to be dunked slimed dye his hair for the sole purpose of spreading energy one dying parts of his hair and his for the betterment of his students you don't find a lot of leaders like Matt who are willing to to be vulnerable in their Community I can confidently say we as school leaders learn from him and I'm sure students teachers and parents learn from him as well we're going to miss him dearly and we wish him the absolute best in his next chapter of his life thank [Applause] you good evening everyone I'm honored to be here in Summit once again this time to celebrate my dear friend and colleague Matt Carlin upon his retirement over 25 years ago a young teaching candidate came to see me at Bron looking for a job he said he really wanted to be a teacher but he just didn't have time to finish the student teaching I'm kind of in a hurry to make money he said as I'm getting married and that would be to his beautiful wife Tracy little did I know that day would be the beginning of a lifetime friendship Matt seemed to be an enthusiastic and intelligent person and it was clear to me he liked and wanted to work with children so I invited him back for a demo lesson following an incredible math lesson complete with Skittles I decided to decided to hire him to teach fourth grade I thought this guy has great potential and as they say the rest is history Matt grew to be an amazing teacher the students loved his energy and his caring and his instruction in the classroom was both engaging and entertaining many times I Vis visited his class to see him in one costume or another just to make the students smile and make the lessons more engaging and interesting and the fact that he was at that time the lead singer in a rock band with my PE teacher Paul feso only served to make him more of a celebrity with the students eventually Matt decided he was interested in admin rtion and I was proud to be his mentor as he first navigated the necessary courses and then completed his internship never dreaming that I would one day be lucky enough to have him as a principal colleague I was extremely happy when he was hired as the principal at Lincoln hubard School there his skills as an administrator took True Flight Matt gave his heart and his all to helping the students and the teachers at Lincoln hubard guiding and teaching them with all of the enthus iasm and care he had shown at Brighton he created an environment where students always came first and were learning had to be fun to be successful he made Lincoln hubard his second home and everyone there part of his second family I know how very much he will be missed there fortunately another dear friend Paul Sears and I were able to continue to work with Matt as instructors at the brain workshops given for all new and seconde Summit teachers at as Matt always told the teachers prior to beginning the workshop the three of us are going to have a great time we hope that you do too and no truer words were ever spoken we had a blast but now my dear friend is ready to retire from Summit I know what a hard decision that was as I just made it recently myself but Matt believe it or not there really is life after Summit I know how much you will miss everyone here all of the friends you have made your colleagues and especially the children but you're moving on to another exciting chapter of your life without that crazy hour drive back and forth every day you will finally be able to spend more time with your beautiful family Tracy and your now three college graduates who are employed Breen Evie and Ben I know how very important family is to you and I'm so happy that you will now be closer to home and be able to be there for all of them to say you will be missed is an understatement you have brought Joy thoughtfulness intelligence and much support to everyone here you were always ready to lend a hand even when your own work plate was overflowing you've created a school where people care about one another and are in it for the kids you are loved and respected by students staff and parents you will be a very hard act to follow my wishes for you are for good health happiness and lots of fun as you move on from Summit you deserve all of that and more congratulations on your retirement love you [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] it's amazing how sometimes celebrations are just still sad but you're G to be Miss Matt all right at this time I'd like to ask Stacy raldi and Tom o Dow to come up to the podium good evening so the high school administrative team did some digging in the archives at Summit High School today and found Tom's original job application and resume to the summit public schools from 1996 it was a little Dusty and had a few cobwebs but it confirmed that Tom retires this year after working as a teacher and supervisor for the past 40 years 28 of which have been here in Summit it is truly been my pleasure to work with Tom for the past 23 years during that time we have witnessed and took part in many positive changes and improvements at to Summit High School Tom has always been professional thoughtful and supportive during our work together to get a better understanding of who Tom is and his impact on the science department and students I asked science department members and co-teachers to share some insight into what is like to work with Tom odad one of the science department members Mr Morano stated that Tom is as passionate a person about science and teaching students science as he's ever met after being a teacher for many years to this day Tom will talk about lessons and experiments he's doing with the same level of excitement as if it was his first year Tom has always made it a point to Showcase how cool and exciting science can be in the hopes of instilling that same passion into our next generation of researchers and problem solvers Mr Morano continues that working with Tom has always been a tremendous pleasure because time and time again Tom has shown support for and collaboration with his colleagues and his teachers whether Tom is working with someone in their first teaching job or if he's working with a veteran teacher he has been a great boss and friend to his Department Another Science Department member Miss Mansfield stated that Tom has expressed confidence in his department and their and their abilities and teaching the way he challenged them to develop their content Knowledge and Skills has strengthened the department and the school someone who has worked with Tom in a co- teing model for many years Miss bovery commented that it is no secret that Tom is an Avid Reader but maybe not as well known is that Tom is a great Storyteller as well one of Miss B's favorite stories that Tom tells occurs during the unit on nuclear chemistry when he talks about the behindth scenes meetings being held at the start of the Manhattan Project but then he talks about what the Russian spies already knew unbeknownst to the US and goes into deep historical details inevitably every year a student or two turns to miss boy and says was he there was he in those meetings how does he know all this this isn't science this isn't chemistry Miss bovery sings Tom's Praises for being so much more than just a chemistry teacher and seizes that momentum part how important it is to learn and read just like Tom Laura Kaplan director of School counseling stated that underneath Tom's serious demeanor hides a dry and hilarious sense of humor you can always count on Tom to insert a oneliner under his breath or share a funny story about a former student or his life's own Adventures when you've been working in one place for as long as Tom has been two things often happen in meetings first you you hold and are often called upon to provide institutional knowledge or history when you ideas ideas are being proposed or problems are being solved a hazard that comes with that long history for some sorry I just lost my spot sorry we'll get there hold on I apologize um that's the the the uh challenge of using a phone sorry sorry Tom go ahead do a oneliner technology he just said it's actually user error it's okay um a hazard that comes with that long history can be that you um you are resistant to change or that you are um hold on I just lost it again holy cow I apologize a hazard that comes with that long history can for some mean that you can find yourself resistant to change not Tom he has often been able to provide that history or background in a way that moves us forward never assuming that the way we have always done things is the best and being a model for learning for leading a group through change Miss Kaplan continues that even when Tom didn't quite agree with the new idea he always resorted back to what was best for the greater good and what was best for the students his presence perspective and humor will be missed in addition to Tom's adventures in Summit he has had many great adventures outside of Summit High School Tom loves to travel with his family but inevitably with every trip there is a story for instance when Tom's daughter got married in Rhode Island several years ago there was a mishap of a missing check to pay for the venue or some other part of the wedding when Tom came back he shared beautiful pictures of the wedding and his family and the now hilarious story about how they finally managed to get everything paid for in the nick of time another one of Tom's travel Adventures led to him mistakenly crash the honeymoon of one of his department members it was a big shock to Tom and the staff member when they came face to face in Hawaii whoops back to the Arches archives though I wanted to share a quote from Tom's annual performance report from his first year in Summit he maintains a high standard of Excellence in all of his classes has high expectations for a students and can often be found as early as 6:00 a.m. preparing for the day ahead well not much has changed in the past 28 years Tom you still have high standards and expectations and you are still one of the first people if not the first person to arrive at School each day Tom thank you for your service commitment and dedication to the many students and staff you have positively influenced during your 40-year career in education we we wish you many years of health happiness family time good travels and great stories congratulations on your retirement [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all right at this time Mr safery and deer Kennedy please come on [Applause] up it is my privilege to address dearra Kennedy as she embarks on retirement dearra has dedicated over 30 years to the field of Education with an impressive I believe it's 26 years here in Summit one aspect of dear's character that has always stood out to me is that she is unapologetically herself she speaks her mind directly and honestly a trait that I have grown to admire and appreciate her ability to keep it real has been a refreshing and invaluable quality throughout her tenure Lyn Rand special education teacher and close friend of dearra remarked that while she probably can't say her first memory of her in public she just she just does not know how she will work at the middle school in her absence she remarked she is my rock I see General I seek General teaching and life advice and I cannot imagine having her not barge into my room 27 times a day she is my best friend at lcj Danielle McGinley language arts teacher at the middle school as well described Mrs Kennedy as a master teacher and a cherished friend quote working with jurra for more than 20 years has been my privilege the lessons she has provided her students are innumerable and so are those she has gifted to her colleagues to name a few dedication is essential honesty matters work hours are not the same as the hours of a school day read often read everything Inspire others to read Learn and Grow Love Learning Miss Kennedy's has undoubtedly left her Mark at lcjsms and will be tremendously missed Mary Ellen McDonald school nurse and close friend remarked that most of her memories with jurra revolve around laughter I don't have any specific anecdotes but I would like to know her ability to always make me smile and impress me with her willingness to give up her time and help others throughout my six years at the Middle School Mrs Kennedy's approach characterized by a blend of firmness and genuine concern stems from her deep investment in the students growth and development Mrs Kennedy takes it upon herself to Mentor students offering them opportunities um for positive change that can leave a lasting impact in their lives and their behavior consistently dearra has reached out to me extending various community service opportunities both within the school campus and in the Greater Community of summit through many external agencies she dedicates countless hours to organizing events like winter clothing drives collecting essential toiletries for families and students in need and playing a pivotal role in our Thanksgiving food drive some might not know this but her connection to Summit runs deep her late father Dr gtis Who served as the former principal of Summit High School only adds to her profound Legacy I think how many years at Summit High School 2 27 years as principal of Summit High School dearra is undoubtedly a Cornerstone of our community and her absence will be felt I will miss our late afternoon conversations while you are busy in the main office making copies as you embark on this new retirement chapter I encourage you to Relish in every moment including including planning that trip to Ireland that we were talking about a few weeks ago please do share those photos and I am eager to see the memories that you'll create wishing you all the best in the next phase of your life [Applause] okay all right at this time I'd like to bring up Dr banker and Pam Kenny [Applause] I love Pam so much I'm putting my glasses on pretend I'm not wearing them Pam I'm here to talk about you as you are retiring after 25 years of service in Summit I know the audience is waiting to hear a beautiful speech about how fabulous you are and they expect me to Rattle off all your accomplishments but instead I feel compelled to share your true Essence audience Pam is nuts truly it's possible that Pam's eccentricities grew out of a career in which she spent the majority of her time talking to kindergarteners and first graders Pam is the quintessential primary teacher as she's patient loving and young at heart but those in charge of our littlest Learners know she's also thoughtful planned and structured to keep all of her students engaged in learning mode sounds standard right uh no when Pam experiences a management rough patch in her classroom she doesn't break out the behavior charts like a normal primary teacher instead she's been known to dress up like a princess or spend the entire day speaking in a foreign accent she explains these moves as attention Grabbers and truth be told they do work but at Washington school we lovingly describe her management moves as crazy how does Pam get along with her colleagues yes she does have typical collaboration qualities everyone loves working with Pam because she's communicative and generous and joyful as she works with others she's mentored many new teachers and brought them to success but don't be fooled by those model behaviors Pam is also a trickster who pulls off elaborate pranks just this year she hid 97 mini shoes all over our office so that Miss Mundy had to find them she convinced a fourth grade teacher that one of her students needed to skip levels and join his class and during our recent K1 articulation meeting she danced through our gathering dressed as a panda bear yes she's fun to work with but more to the point she's totally wacky Pam sees her role be beond her classroom walls she's added so much to our community at large in that way I would describe her as more than typical even exemplary but catch this when Pam has an idea it's usually a big idea a few years back she went to an art show and was inspired by an installation on Ellis Island this motivated her to create a major districtwide event in which we all shared our family's immigration stories and we viewed a screening of a Robert daira movie called Ellis she even invited Robert DeNiro to attend I'm not kidding but he didn't which is his problem fine the event was Innovative and Brilliant but the work that Pam pit into it totally crazy so yes we will miss Pam's skill we will miss her outstanding instruction her superb team presence and her celebrated influence and Leadership but most of all we will miss the essence of Pam her silly wild and outlandish company her lucky lucky home family will now get to enjoy her fully Unleashed but Pam please know that anytime something outrageous happens at Washington school we will all automatically think of you you are fully nuts and that's what we love most about you [Applause] [Applause] at this time I'd like to honor the retirees who could not be with us this evening Susan Harden ESL teacher Bron Elementary School Linda heler secretary for the technology office Scott Petrillo school counselor Summit High School frederique Roy Boosey special education teacher at Summit High School and Suzanne Shire kindergarten teacher at Wilson Primary [Applause] Center this time I'd like to introduce our board president miss Bita Justice thank you all um at this time we have resolutions and commendations every school district relies on Community Partnerships to help improve the overall experience of public education the best ones are fortunate to not only have Partnerships but true Partners who become integral pieces of the long journey that leads to successful outcomes for kids in Summit our partners provide structured learning experiences in the form of tools curricula training experiential study exploration and enhanced Pro programming some make distinctive extracurricular and co-curricular experiences possible as well as donate limited time and scarce resources others not only work to engage our entire community on key topics involving the district but District's goals and commitment to scholarly Excellence tonight as a very small token of our appreciation we honor many of them publicly and simply say thank you for helping our community be one of the best communities not only in the state but in our country after I call out the name of the organization I ask that the representative from each organization comes forward to receive a certificate of appreciation from superintendent huff and then please form a line in front of the deos to get a group photo afterwards if the audience could hold their Applause to the end that would be much appreciated we're actually going to use the stage since we have it so go around and come up top the picture even better stage front and center should they all move it's good to follow directions now you will all be camera ready okay we will start with chat poor Summit I almost forgot myself we're going to try and hold our Applause to the end so they can all have time to get on the stage so we'll local County including the prosecutor's office state and federal officials reunification plans are used in a catastropic catastrophic event like an active shooter if that occurs at one of our schools the plan is designed to reunite students with their parents at an alternate site other than the school unfortunately we are living in a time where schools need to think about reun reunification plans and as as a usual uh practice to be prepared for and of course Summit is leading the way in this area yesterday's exercise was the culmination of 14 months of planning it was a huge success for all the agencies who participated we learn invaluable lessons that we can use to improve our plans moving forward I want to thank everyone who worked extremely hard to make this happen there are too many names to mention but I need to personally recognize and thank a few individuals starting with Captain Ryan Peters from the summit PD Joseph Hal from the office of emergency management and Rob Gardella with education the education committee met on June 6th at 12:00 for a total of 30 m minutes members in attendance for myself board members e Kelly and walita Justice superintendent Scott Huff cabinet member Dr christar director of student Personnel Services we discussed three topics starting with rankings each year multiple platforms like School Digger Niche and US News use a variety of algorithms to compile high school rankings these rankings move fluidly year-to year changing each school's overall ranking number even if the percentage change of the school is as small as one tenth of a percent Summit refers to US News methodology and ranking when reviewing and analyzing year yearly Trends and will do so for this year's rankings over the summer months in the fall superintendent Huff will present these findings at a Boe meeting and president Stacy Grimaldi will present for parents at the high school we then discuss discuss the safe return plan that was updated every six months we update our safe return plan as part of the ARP act which provided Esser Grant funds to Elementary and secondary schools to help them safely reopen and address the impacts of the covid-19 pandemic we have updated this plan for a final time as the program is officially ending and our updated plan will be available on the district website our remaining available Esser funds are being allocated as they must be used by September and finally we discussed just an academic course update for the 2024 2025 school year we will be offering a humanities class in sixth grade to provide more opportunities to the gifted and talented in the middle school this offering will support the transition from ideas at the elementary level to the Middle School curriculum Additionally the district is discussing such opportunities at the ninth grade level for future school years as nothing is currently on the course offerings for 2425 our next meeting will be Thursday August 15th at 12:00 p.m. do I have any additions from committee members questions from the board thank you thank you Miss Stanton next we will have the operations committee thank you oh mine's pretty loud sorry also just okay don't go too close I know how's that okay sorry about that right the operations committee met on June 3D for 50 minutes in attendance was myself board members Yan Cho and Melanie con as well as superintendent Scott huff and from the business office Derek Jess and Kathy sardo the business office provided a number of updates to the committee on rfps and project bids including uh a bid from Topline to complete work to redo the high school rear driveway one bid for asbestos removal is also recommended to be accepted as the bid came in right on target approval is also recommended for the asbestos consultant ah ra for work they're going to be doing on each project and their work consists of monitoring the removal in buildings testing of all materials providing and providing report back to the district and as a reminder removing asbest will take place below the floors of the Middle School in Brighton but it should be noted the asbest in these buildings was contained and not and did not present exposure risk however the removal is related to construction work in the buildings that offer the opportunity to remove the asbest efficiently and without disruption another bid for Jefferson playground will be rejected as the bid came in over budget approximately double the initial project estimate and lastly a bid for a district phys came back with no responses and the business office will look to re is that b the district was also was also excuse me the business administration was also able to solicit quotes for our property Casualty Insurance and has advised that New Jersey school Insurance Group has provided a quote uh $ 28,224 and [Music] $152,500 th000 to 50,000 but the district will be getting $250,000 more in coverage for athletics the committee also heard from the director of Athletics Dan Healey on request for a part-time role to support the scheduling of games coordination of coaches and staff and other administrative tasks over the last six years the district has introduced a number of additional Sports programs including unified basketball unified soccer flag football JV boys ice hockey and freshman volleyball approximately 10,000 students across the district participate in our in our athletic programs and with the growth in the number of programs the committee agreed to approve a part-time phys for up to to 50 hours per month the role will be funded by our existing budget with monies from staff that have recently retired and the committee will evaluate the need to continue that role at the end of the upcoming school year from a su Food Service perspective the April p&l for district-wide Food Services was $1 4,944 33 bringing the year-to date number to 10,695 and 21 the district also received an updated School price list from pomp tonium which is an exercise that happens annually this year there was an average increase of about 25 cents across most items um the district will also began serving free breakfast at Brighton and Washington and elementary schools the federal government recently lowered the income qualifications for free breakfast and based on the percentage of applicants at these elementary schools the district will now need to ensure breakfast is provided and as a reminder money for these services are funded by the federal government on Rod grants last month the uh committee read read out
