on the remarkable year the township of Union has experienced this year has undoubtedly left a lasting impression with many exciting programs grand openings anniversaries improvements and events enhancing the quality of life for our residents was a key priority in 2024 centered around the activities and opportunities we provided over the past year we invited our community to participate in more than 67 Township events we introduce new experiences like the Innovative downtown art t tour open road sessions and the exhilarating Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving our cherished annual events returned each with a fresh twist including our thriving Farmers Market the historic juneth festival and the enchanting Winter Wonderland among others the festivities continued as we welcomed over 28 new businesses that have chosen to invest in our community bringing over variety of goods and services to Residents and visitors alike we celebrated Nine Business anniversaries highlighting the strength and resilience of our local business Community our collaboration with investors and entrepreneurs remains ongoing the Union Titan mix use development in the Union Center special improvement district has been completed it features an appealing co-working space a 250 person Event Center with a Speak Easy Style Bar and state-of-the-art light and audio we remain committed to preserving the quality of life through recreational opportunities in our Township parks the recent addition of brand new pickle ball Courts at Weber and Collins Parks allows residents to engage in this exciting fast-paced game that has gained popularity across the country volunteer part 's turf soccer field has been renovated and is now open for public use our recreation department has also launched new programs for everyone to enjoy including a highly successful public speaking course for both Youth and adults the Challenger soccer program provides children and young adults of all abilities with a non-competitive environment to experience the joy of soccer we also planted 100 red maple trees throughout our Township and hosted Earth Day and clean sweep events making it a Greener 2024 whether through events Parks green programs or Road improvements we continue to invest in our community this year alone over 40 roadways have been enhanced improved road work allows for safer driving conditions and our speed 2024 traffic enforcement initiative has helped slow Vehicles protect pedestrians engage the community encourage proper driving and dedicate resources to saving lives today we have made 2,321 stops and have given out 2,47 tickets and we will continue to protect residents of all generations throughout our community by keeping our road safe our seniors are among the most valued members of our community the number of programs workshops and activities designed for seniors continually expands earlier this year we inaugurated the 21st New Jersey veteran service office at our senior center serving as a vital hub for veterans and their families to access essential services the township of Union truly offers something for everyone it has been an extraordinary year filled with achievements to celebrate and we are excited to build on these accomplishments in the upcoming year aiming to make it even more remarkable [Applause] [Music] good afternoon family friends elected officials clergy and residents I'd like to start by giving thanks to God for making this day possible and for my many blessings along my life's journey I want to thank my family for all their support and I want to thank the township committee for their support over the past two years I know I speak for my fellow colleagues on the township committee when I say thank you Manny for all your hard work and dedication while you were [Applause] may I also have to say we have a great [Applause] team today as we welcome a new year filled with promise we stand together as a community ready to embrace the opportunities before us this is a moment of reflection and resolve a moment to recommit ourselves to building a town where every resident feels Proud To Live work and Thrive Union has always been a special place for me my late wife Gail and I moved here in 1996 to raise our family and become part of this wonderful Community I never imagined that 29 years later I would have the honor and privilege to serve as your mayor I am humble and grateful to my colleagues for entrusting me with this prestigious responsibility thank you guys one of the reasons I chose Union is a strong sense of community despite being the second largest municipality in Union County Union has always felt like a small town where people care for and look out for one another this that Spirit of togetherness is at the heart of everything that we do the township of Union is a vibrant Mosaic a rich tapestry of diverse cultures and backgrounds our community celebrates the uniqueness of each thread that contributes to the strength and the beauty of the whole this proud tradition of cultural diversity is at the Cornerstone of our identity and serves as an inspiration for vision I am honored to share with you today our parks are the Hub of our connectivity places where families gather children play and residents connect with nature this year we are investing in our parks to make it more accessible enjoyable inclusive for all phase two of rafkin Park will include a new full-size basketball court resurfaced tennis and pickle ball courts updated playground equipment a covered stage with lighting and audio equipment additional lighting and walking paths and a fmer steam spray pad for hot summer days weather Park will also seees significant upgrades including a resurfaced tennis court new parking Bank basketball for all skill levels a resurfaced full-size basketball court a repaved picnic area flood control mitigation and a new soccer turf field both these Improvement projects will begin this spring hoppy Park will benefit from a new playground expanded parking and additional amenities Bill Cole Park we also see addition of walking paths and upgraded playground equipment and thanks to groundworks our environmental Partners we celebrate opening a new onm nature walk trail through lont reservation at Joe Collins Park the trail will include sitting areas wayfinding signs nature markers highlighting plants and Wildlife all with minimal environmental impact additionally with the County's assistance we expect to complete Renovations at Zimmerman park with a new expanded parking lot improving Ada access and new Pathways at our Pine Street Park we will install a new playground expanded swing set and and the first road climbing set in town and at Davis Park we'll open a new spray pad we'll also undertake a complete overhaul of lightning Brook Park with a new multi-purpose turf field walk paths basketball court new concessions building and Gazo expanded parking lot and a new spray pad these projects supported by grants toing more than $1 million demonstrate our commitment to providing spaces where families can enjoy the great outdoors and come together as a community at the heart of our community lies our town center a place where history meets the opportunity over the years we have worked tirelessly to bring residents and businesses to our C Center District and this year we will take it to the next level we will cut a ribbon on a new Parking Deck with 220 spaces 110 which will be exclusive for visitors and Shoppers we will also introduce a new parking app service to enforce parking ensuring smoother access for all meter parking will undoubtedly improve the overall shopping and Commercial experience reduce congestion and improve parking conditions our hardworking Merchants will also benefit by having more parking options for their employees and our Municipal Lots this will they will also come have more significant parking Rotation by customers allowing Shoppers and greater access to their favorite stores and restaurants but that's not all our economic development office will continue to support the economic growth of small businesses across our five business districts offering seminars and webinars access to small business loans marketing assistance and one-on-one support for business professionals together we will create a vibrant welcoming downtown that reflects the dynamic forward-looking Spirit of Union safety is the Cornerstone of our community whether you walk to school enjoying an evening downtown or playing in the park every resident deserves to feel secure I am happy to report that in 2024 saw a reduction in overall crime by 23% [Applause] this year we will continue to work closely with our police and firefighters to implement strategies that promote safety and build trust our police department will maintain its focus on combating excessive speed and dangerous driving we will enforce speed limits with zero tolerance all year round ticket red light Runners give suenes to unauthorized trucks and Target aggressive drivers and promote pedestrian safety by partnering with vision Zero vision zero is a strategy to eliminate the traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safety healthy and Equitable Mobility for all we will remain Vigilant against the rides and car thefts plaguing our region our special task force will continue to deter break-ins make arrests Patrol neighborhoods and assist families with home security assessments and work with local County state and federal law enforcement agencies to track and combat those criminal groups that Target our communities safety isn't just about enforcement it's about a connection by fostering partnership between law enforcement and the community we will build a bridge not build barriers ensure safety ensure every resident feels protected including and respected by upgrading our Parks revitalizing our primary commercial areas and fortifying our Public Safety apparatus we are demanding and achieving a higher quality of life for our residents these goals are ambitious but achievable if we work together I invite each of you to play a role in shaping the future of our town whether by volunteering sharing your ideas or supporting local initiatives your contributions make all the difference as your mayor
