Mrs aaro here Mrs Amadeo here Mr fr here Mrs Harvey here Mr Ang Gracia here Mrs jet here Mr Gonzalez here s Santos and Dr Vince Kua are absent okay before we go into presentations we have a long agenda today so we're going to be doing things a little different tonight uh we'll be going through our um um presentations uh committee reports board Liaisons and Community engagement and then we will be going into executive session um so first if I can ask uh for a referendum update Mr O'Brien okay good evening this is uh the October 2024 update for the current projects we have uh going so um since the last meeting um some of the highlighted updates we continue working on the HVAC they continue uh operational with the fresh air the heat and AC as it goes back and forth with the weather um the media center um it's in use by staff and the students a preliminary punch list was issue to the contractor uh for some items we wanted to address um the formal punch list for the art room main office and the toilet room project which is by done by one of the gc's um that will be issued formally in the next couple days um the HVAC project um all work just want to highlight that we will continue in the classrooms only in second shift or the weekends um or if there's a day off with the school and there staff coverage um the next day the classrooms will be safe to hold class we do have contingency plans put in place to make sure that the fresh air and heat um as we're um past October 15th now in the state requirement to have heat ready um so we will make sure that's put in place the Bayberry floor unit ventilators have been installed um and are operational um Valley View um unit ventilators are currently being worked on as we're in this meeting um and they will continue for the next couple weeks um the PSG uh rooftop units that were part of a program those have been installed and uh were craned up um a couple weeks ago between the September meeting um and then other just general project notes for these couple projects we continue doing coordination with the administration regarding any school or community events um that need to have the school closed or if there's faculty meetings we make sure that uh the construction doesn't impact those meetings U we continue having um Communications with the principles has any um feedback or any changes we need to make um with scheduling Andor adjust with the contractor work in the second shift um and these are just some of the photos of the progress that has been done this is in the updated Media Center um another uh desk area that sitting area that the kids can gather at this is the furniture some of the furniture layout um this is uh into the entrance of the art room which has been in use for several weeks now um but some uh updates art room teacher has been able to uh do on her walls as the boards have been put in place and continued layout for the art room um these are the pscg U units uh in the crane process um this is uh just some progress photos in the previous presentations I didn't really present uh any of the roof work these are exhaust fans that were done throughout the schools um this is currently what we're we're going through now this is a valid use is a unit that was removed and as you can see there's coordination you know minimal use of the the space there trying to keep the teacher stuff as much in the areas that they have it know what is causing that sorry I don't know if it's my phone um and again uh this is uh just another class room just trying to keep the carpets and everything that are in those spaces uh not to be damaged and less clean up um and in Interruption the next morning and these are just the the photos um just giving the update um again a lot of the work done at night now isn't uh really exciting for photos but it is uh really important with the new hvc so the quality and everything is uh being worked on and just before any um questions that the board has for Connor just I know I say it every month I am going to reiterate it again Ricky and his team are amazing amazing um some of the things that you see require um the coordination with our staff like you can't believe mornings nights right um even tonight we have Crews working in this building I'm sure you saw that tonight um even the coordination with that bringing custodians over for Bayberry you know covering um just don't want it to go unknown how much effort is really put into it from our own staff also to make this happen correct uh our on-site project manager and Rick you're in constant communication even when Ricky may not be here he's still reachable and when Mike or onsite PM is not here till second shift he St communication with Ricky during the morning um with Dr Glazer they're all constantly communicating to make sure any adjustments need to be made for the next night are are done because it's not always uh as easy or the same as the night before so um it's constant coordination especially with the heat requirement [Music] now okay so our Valley of view kids will be nice and warm it'll be okay Heat's good all the Heat's good and the outside weather's been pretty warm lately too so um it's but yes it's getting colder um and we're making sure that the Ricky very quickly has uh access to the system so it's new controls that are getting put in um and they work on it that same night to make sure by the next morning Ricky can actually see the the unit on his uh BMS system so bis the state law is that we have the access by the 15th and we do all of our systems are working so when I'm saying that they're here tonight they take out a system system they do the wiring like Connor said they do their part that part right and then by the morning it's online so that you can control that thermostat and on the occasion we have had we had an occasion at Bayberry as you know two weeks ago then um they have the backup plan right so that we are fully operational we are not impacted any other questions question well I'd just like to thank you for all your efforts Connor and continuing to get us closer to completion of these projects I I've been following with the uh operations committee's uh minutes and the folder for the committee uh attachments and I see that we uh have something in the works for a change order log that will be able to track the the change orders to date um I I haven't seen any material but do we have a um overall um accounting for the project list that was proposed for the referendum how much is um left to be done how much what the funds are that's left uh for that remaining work in the jobs that going on it is uh a common practice to keep the the change order logs um contractors will submit them whether they're valid or not and we track all of it um review it for the you know accuracy make sure we have the backup um in a job like this where it's um very important to keep the timing moving um we make sure it keeps moving while we go through that review process and I communicate with uh Karen Bishop to make sure that she's aware of the cost um and then those other projects that we still have uh coming up um those have been you know tracked and where we're going to be at with those um and we're in a spot where we have allowances that we um don't anticipate for the current projects to go over um so that would be helpful for those upcoming projects okay thanks I I just made note of the change order LW because I did see that was in the minutes but and we have the publicly available um Financial reports for the uh capital projects fund 30 that I can see a remaining balance uh for that Capital funds uh account but it it would be helpful just to see um some type of spreadsheet or something that uh all the board could just look to see where we're at and what remains uh what how much funding we have left for some of the upcoming work that hasn't been bit out yet I can speak to the administration and and coordinate that if that's something that uh is recommended to to uh share with everybody thank you although I I would say just for Anthony's um comfort level we are on track the the original um budget project budget to have the money for the remaining projects is intact hasn't been invaded correct y as as and that was done confirmed prior to these projects being uh even awarded and with these projects that we currently have there's allowances that we're accounted for that we're not going to encroach on exceeding those allowances so that again will then put us in a better spot for the upcoming projects um as we go and design them and go out to uh bid um obviously we got to see what the bids come back in with but um I'm comfortable as I stand here for for those projects that's still yet to come thank you I just I just wanted to say thank you to Connor and the administration for all of your hard work during all of this the staff who's been very flexible in all the adjustments so I just wanted to thank all of you and let you know that we we appreciate everything that you guys do every day so thank you thanks any other questions okay thank you than con thank you Connor microphones are sensitive today yeah I don't know they're on hey we're going to move on to uh spring 2024 njsla performance report by Dr GL please yep well I will kick it off for you um Aaron went oh he's already got it yay Aaron thank you so um this report is um a joint Jo effort of all of our administrators you see car kid dragging to the microphone unfortunately Denise um our Bayberry School principal will not be with us tonight and Nicole dotto had a family medical emergency and she will not be with us tonight although the third presentation which is hers she did do a full um recording so we'll be able to still have her prepare her presentation um for tonight and I'll do my to tag team with you Karen um thank you for taking this on tonight we have the njsla assessment just a reminder this is just one measure of how our students are performing um academically the results are used um in combination with all of the other measures right classroom formative assessments I ready benchmark assessments all of that so used in combination um to draw conclusions about students performance the parents have already received their individual student reports and the analysis for their children they also receive a guide on how to interpret that tonight's assessment results are for the state requirement um to report to the board and the public on um our results the data comparison is to the state because what we receive is the average scale scale score of our students at the school district and state level that's all we receive at this point and the data Compares it's the same data by grade level and content area so for us that's grades 3 to 8 only and we only have the state to compare to there is no other basis at this time but the NJ dooe the Department of Education typically I would say in the spring um they release the summary data that's that comprehensive district report um again that's usually in the spring so tonight what we're going to do is review um by grade level by consent area and then we'll tie that back to our um District goals and initiatives thank you Dr Glazer obviously I pulled the Short Straw tonight so thank you again no problem let's go Aaron okay so I just want to explain a little bit of refresher we have um two different scales that we're looking at it's a one through five scale when we're looking at language arts and math and it's a 1 through four scale when we're looking at science so first we'll start by looking at how our district compares to the state uh levels one and two are in the pink and one is did not yet meet expectations level two is partially met expectations so those are our students that are struggling to meet State expectations level three is yellow those are our kids that are approaching expectations maybe they just need a little bit of push maybe they were having a bad day maybe there was a question worded wrong but those are those kids that are right on the borderline level four and level five are in green those are our kids that are meeting or exceeding expectations so those are level four and five so I just wanted to explain those colors to you and why they're group the way they are so here you can see how the district does compare to the state we didn't have to compare schools because we only have one Elementary and one middle school so this is these are our Ela results Aon next slide and these are our math results we'll give you a second to look at them again the district comes first and then the state Algebra 1 in Geometry we do have a couple kids here and there taking some of the high school level courses so this is how we did as you could see we kind of knocked it out of the park compared to the state Erin now what's very important is when we're looking at the math assessment data that we have to remember our seventh grade data and our eighth grade data isn't looking at the grade level at a whole we do have some seventh graders taking high school math they're taking Algebra 1 and because they're taking Algebra 1 they're taking the algebra one assessment they're not taking the seventh grade math assessment and in grade 8 we have students that are taking Algebra 1 and we have some students that are taking geometry two different High School courses and they're taking those assessments they're not taking the eighth grade assessment so we have to be very careful when we're looking at the seventh grade math data and the e8th grade math data that when you're looking at seventh grade assessment data you're looking at you're not looking at our top kids our top performing kids are taking the algebra on or GE omry assessments not saying that our kids taking seventh and eth gr grade math aren't accelerated they're just taking the grade level math assessments so we do want to be careful when we're looking at the data that we're remembering that the state actually pulled those kids apart in English language arts all of those kids are together taking the same assessment by grade level okay um the next slide is looking at our science data and this is the district versus the state and again there's less levels here so you'd see below and near proficient is pink proficient is yellow and advanced proficient is green and now this is the year-to-year comparison so this is looking at the data in a different way what we did there is we looked at the only thing like Dr gazer U mentioned the only other data besides our district data we have to compare our student performance to is the state at this point so the next thing we do is we look at years past and we look at at that data in two different ways we want to look at how a grade level are performed so look at our curriculum our resources what kind of professional development we're providing per grade level but we also want to look at a group of students and how they perform year-to-year uh for example if we look at my current or my fifth graders in the spring so in 23 they were grade four if you all look at the the uh second group it says grade four year of 23 we had 73% of our students perform at levels four and five and then we look at the spring of 24 when they're in grade five that jumped 10% for 83% of our students performing at levels four and five so that's the that's an example of how to track a group of students if we want to compare the data at grade 5 from the spring of 23 to the spring of 24 we can see when we're looking at the curriculum we're looking at our resources they went from 69% to 83% so it's a different group of students but it's the same grade level so there's two different ways to look at the data the only thing that I want to caution everyone about when you're looking at this data is that not only are you not looking at the same students every year but the test itself changes from year to year uh for example in fifth grade math this from last year to the year before the number of multiple CH uh choice questions was reduced from 66 to 52 but the number of open-ended questions stayed the same so the value of the most difficult part of the test for all students is the open-ended and that was weighted much more than in the past two years so the assessment itself while we're looking at different standards and skills because they've been updated also looking at a different assessment and by the CH time the children finish the multiple choice and get to the open-ended they're usually tired they're usually frustrated this is a time where they give up or they rush through so we have to be very very careful that when we're using this data and comparing it year to year or students to students that we're remembering that the test is not stagnant it's not the same tool that's being used every year that's why it's only one of multiple measures okay so these are our Ela results from year to year Aon these are the fifth grade math results um some things to think about when we're looking at e Ela and math is also the programming the standards have been updated in ela and math um the science of reading for the younger students is really going to change what their classroom instruction and resources look like our resources have been outdated our go math program progr which is used all the way up through grade five it this is the last year of it it's Antiquated um so we've been looking to really boost that and we've started that process this summer um there is little or no professional development for the younger grades because it was difficult to get funding for the um workshops and also substitutes um and then in in response to this we've put different things in place to support our kids but I did just want to explain some of the things that you may be seeing in some of the trends and hopefully the changes because we'll talk more about of our initiatives later but this is some of the math results science here's our science comparison we did have I don't know if you remember last year's results we did have a huge jump in 8th grade science last year like it was off the charts how well our kids did we did a big change to our curriculum and resources um two years before that and we really got to see the benefits of that so that trend is continuing reminder the fifth grade math uh Science assessment is all of Elementary School tested in fifth grade so it's a lot of content for them and then in e8th grade it's sixth through 8th grade so it's very important to remember they only get this test in fifth and eth grade and it's testing a lot of science Concepts um and it's a difficult test that's a lot to remember next one Erin we also have other assessments that we report on that we give our students we have the access for multilingual learner um it measures their English language profic Proficiency in four areas I think you've all heard Motas talk about it before Reading Writing listening and speaking are the four areas it's a six point proficiency levels to be considered from English as a second language learner you need to get a 4.5 on the scale um and given our small size um in this District you'll notice that there are going to be data points that it just says that we don't have you need at least 10 kids we don't have Les at least 10 kids in that category to show you the information on how they did um the access test is one of those and this is just what the scale looks like uh we also have Dynamic learning Maps just before Dynamic learning Maps I do want to comment that we have a parent meeting specifically for our multi- language Learners they do the parents also get results so the when you look at the proficiency level the last slide and where students are growing right where they come in um developing expanding that um informs our program of instruction based on where the students are I just I didn't want to skip that no no yeah so parents get all of these results they get them individually for their child and they always get some kind type of interpretation guide because we know that um teacher speak isn't everybody language we use lots of acronyms right Dory um DM Dynamic learning Maps um this measures student Proficiency in English language arts mathematics and science this assessment is for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities and they are the ones that do not take the njsla because they are being instructed on the Essential Elements um which are grade specific expectations about what students with significant cognitive disabilities should know and be able to do rather than our state standards so that's their instruction um ma their assessment is matching their instruction and I do know in um our committee uh we had a question about that except for this dlm yes all of our other students take the grade level test special education multilingual Learners and they take the grade level test that they are in not the grade level that their IEP or their um canu weeda is is saying the grade level that they work at or that the goals that they're working at yes the assessment does not meet students where they are it's the opposite of what anyway I since it came up everybody else does take the njsl next slide ER thank you um the results of the dlm are discussed at the students IEP meeting um the IEP team just considers the information when they write their learning goals and objectives and it helps them determine their IEP results can be used during discret trial teaching which involves breaking up larger tasks or goals into subskills or smaller components and teaching them individually and repeatedly encouraging skill acquisition so um every year the district the board has a retreat district and board goals are set this year one of our goals is to also develop a long long range strategic plan which we'll be talking about um but for this year's District goal tied to um this report developing a sustainable budget that supports identified curricular changes and Implement program initiatives professional development to support grow and when we came together at The Retreat and talked about this goal it's pretty General goal and the reason is that we needed to be able to implement last year's budget was the end of April of the students take the tests a week or two later in may start to get this these results and based on the last two years I've only been here last year and this year um Karen and Denise they're on four years Nicole a little bit more than that Nicole's got a couple months on me okay just a couple months so all together we sit down and we make a plan you saw it reflected in the budget you heard us talk about um things to restore things to maintain things to add the important piece as we start to talk about this in terms of the results and I know Karen that you will also address this this goal even though it's a one-year goal has to be looked at in the long term one of the things that you're going to see as we move through the next slides lots of things have been proposed lots of initiative started um that with change of leadership changed budgetary requirements caused um cuts or staffs to be moved initiatives were put on hold um some initiatives not returned to so we're going to be very um specific when we talk about what has been continued or maybe restarted what is ongoing what's new um I think you'll be able to um see that we are looking to make significant change and as I've said the whole year I've been here if we keep doing the same right if we don't do anything to impact the work we're doing nothing will change and again from our goals I think we're all committed right to to that Improvement but it's what we need to do to create that Improvement that we're going to talk about next okay so our class our academic initiatives fall into basically uh five categories these are the same five categories we presented last year we figured consistency was good yeah teaching and learning process um classroom enrichment programs clubs and activities field trips professional learning all the good stuff and we are going to get more specific right because um each of these things have their own initiatives have their own work tied to them and a lot of them overlap also oh yes yeah Erin you going to start with this one you want go for it you want to go first I was gonna say well I was going to go just speaking about the some of the targeted things um that started just over the summer right we started with you going to go to the new slide no just just about what we're talking about right classroom providing strategies resources tools that includes the kinds of things we would do around curriculum writing reviewing new texts remember the text isn't the curriculum looking at um what we are offering currently where we could expand and we are definitely going to talk about that field trips that add enhancement um and of course professional learning which you hear us talk about an awful lot so there you go now you can hit that culture of inquiry and collaboration before I get into the academic initiatives I do want to put a plugin for my English language arts teachers in grades six through eight um we cut the second period of language arts last year because we were concerned about class size for the fourth graders moving into fifth grade and our scores are still very good so despite losing an entire period of exactly so kudos to them they revamped their curriculum they targeted the skills that they thought were most essential to the kids gave them the practice um and I just want to you know I just want to recognize them for all the effort and hard work they did to again work together as part of the team for wat Chang burrow to make it success ful for kids they they're going to see in a few years but they're not it didn't impact them directly when we created that fourth fifth grade classroom so I just want to give a little shout out to them before we go through all this um so for the academic initiatives that we are either continuing or new um really looking at having that culture of inquiry and collaboration within our class rooms uh during Co a lot of I know we all hate to hear about it but during covid I feel like a lot of students um forgot how to problem solve forgot how to talk to each other forgot how to work together whether they were friends or not forgot how to communicate clearly in person and we've been doing a lot to not only um focus on the curriculum and the standards and the skills that are academic but also the ones that will help them be successful in any type of workplace environment so engaging in authentic deeper learning we've used the latti which is learner Active technology infused classroom and the pbl which is the Project based learning methods um at all grade levels um we use I ready data to help inform instruction and that personalizes learning for individual students in classes we were talking about how the njsla does not meet students where they are its expectations are at that grade level what I does is it gives them an assessment and it adjusts for them and creates a learning path to meet them where they are to help build them to those grade level skills so it's a great second piece of data and it's a great tool to help inform help teachers plan lessons and to help students reach their goals um of course the teachers sit and they analyze the individual State testing data to support students you should have seen how angry my fifth grade math teachers were when they learned about the changes in the test um because at first they were a little alarmed looking at hey why did Johnny he did this and even their own personal children looking at those that data and they still did great but they thought they were going to do better um emphasizing a growth mindset if you don't get it the first time let's go back let's do a one check let's go back let's see if you can fix your problem can you find how you did it it's okay to fail and try again building student agency and pride in work self-monitoring Collective responsibility you'll see kids setting goals for themselves and then a plan of action to reach those goals um again reinforcing the productive collaboration model how can we work together what roles do we have what are my strengths um who can I work with who should I work with and then um evidence-based teaching they're not just teaching something because they're interested in it they're teaching it because the kids sitting in front of them need it and I I will just say as part of even the referendum right as part of our projects you can look at the art room Connor showed you some of the pictures where there is that collaborative space you can see the library space it's broken up into zones that's flexible the furniture is even flexible to allow for that problem-based learning to allow for the collaborative work that's happening so it's it's all happening in concert and it's pretty exciting now that it's a reality right and we we also haven't forgot got that child who just wants to work by themselves sometimes so we make sure that we have spaces for that also that was me sometimes I just didn't wanted to get away and concentrate all right so our enrichment programs we do have the sore program at both schools and opportunities um for them through the sore Pro program different trips and contests um that they uh engage in um a lot of problem based learning types of activities um coding and Robotics opportunities and steam um in our in our lab and then upstairs in our other steam we have coding classes we have robots for them to program um schoolwide contests even if you're not in sore and you're not in stame um you can participate in some of those opportunities uh like the spelling be the district science fair which we're excited to bring back this year um the steam family night writing contests and visiting authors at both schools to just name a few um each classroom um offers a variety of extension and enrichment activities and resources for students for those kids that maybe have a passion or an interest in something or maybe they've already uh are comfortable and secure in a concept how can we push that further and we use preassessments and that helps us differentiate the instruction and provide that just right challenge for all students um this I always like to say that the end of the day is halftime and we do offer many after school clubs and activities for students at both schools I will not read the list but you can see um we've got things that help you with financial literacy we've got coding and Robotics we've got art we've got math we've got Adventure Club we've got student council um we've got choir we've got a band we've got all kinds of different things and we of course have sports and that's Val but Bayberry also also I was going to say I know Karen is um representing both but there's there opportunities at both schools the treps marketplace that we hold every year oh you know it now you know it because I said marketplace right yeah so treps Marketplace is an entrepre entrepreneurial Club where the kids come up with a concept and it's their own business and they go through the whole business model and then at the very end whatever their product is they actually have to go through the process of selling it and we have a whole Marketplace and um it's it's a great it's um it's funded by the youth services so the watch on B you Services every year then I'll I'll hit professional learning quickly okay so um are you going to do this one with ID you can do it do you want would you prefer to talk about I thought you were going to do the Bayberry one the next one I can do either one I don't care I'm excited I have to say if you aren't sure I'm pretty excited for the professional learning what we're doing to continue what we're able to add I think this is one of the best ways ways that we get to impact um growth not just for the students of course but with our staff right that job embedded professional learning that opportunity to deepen their content that opportunity to build efficacy around their practice and learn to personalize instruction or differentiate instruction that's going to have the impact right in the classroom for our staff for our students got okay so I'm gonna talk I'm going to tell a little bit of story this is my third district and it's very different because we're teeny tiny um so we have to rely on our professional learning from outside sources a lot because we don't have a director of curriculum we don't have content supervisors we don't have coaches um so when we're really leaning on how do we improve practices and resources we go outside of our buildings um so one of those resources that we're continuing to use is from ID so we have a consultant that um consultant company that we've used on and off over the years way before me they were being used um they took a little break we brought them back and we're keeping them because we're having a lot of success last year they really helped us with looking at what project-based learning it is um compared to problem-based learning which is where we the direction we want to go in um how are we infusing technology in how are we infusing student um choice and and giving students more control over their own learning um this year we're doing a lot of training um specifically on different areas executive functioning and student achievement meeting the diverse the the um needs of diverse Learners the science of reading is a great Focus that's happening with the elementary school um we're giving personalized coaching for those teachers and we're also giving self-paced online learning experiences on Choice things that the teachers want work on or things that we as administrators identify for either the individual or the grade level some examples are using formative assessment to drive instruction individualized learning multilingual Learners leveraging AI in the classroom working with gifted and talented social emotional learning and of course the problem-based learning experiences and I know that third and fourth grade starts their coaching on Monday at Bayberry yep that's my note from Denise there you go starting this work I got the same note yep so basically um what's happening with Ela um as many of you know is uh with language arts and math the teachers uh we had teachers volunteer to work on a committees over the summer to start to analyze a crosswalk of the old standards and the new standards and look at our current resources and practices and begin that curriculum revi revision process and the coach is helping um oversee expedite and support the teachers in really looking at what the new standards or the the change in standards which is more relevant for our upper grades is really asking of the students what those tasks and those skills and that content is um so the other thing that is really exciting is the conquer Math training um that was expanded to K through 8 for math special education and our ESL teachers so in the past it would be a stu a teacher would choose maybe to go to one topic or maybe we'd see oh maybe we need this this type of refresher on this content in this skill in this grade and we'll send one person and then they come back and share it with their whole grade level um this year what we're able to do is we were able to send teachers k through eight for whole grade level um learning workshops so it's a series of workshops where they dive deep on the different concepts skills and standards that the state of New Jersey is requiring from the students how to differentiate how to teach the Concepts in multiple different ways what manipulatives they should use how to look at a problem from seven different ways if necessary to reach our children at all different levels how to push them and enrich them when they get it all of those things so that's super exciting um and this is the first time that our K through2 teachers have ever been included in a professional development like this for math so it's super exciting it's and I did mention that our ESL teacher also is going which is too have they started using it in the class at all yet they've always been using it yeah so it it's it's a teaching strategies yes speaking of the little the kada K to to um I don't know when the dates I know there was some September workshops but the workshops are spread throughout the year so usually what they do is they'll teach the concepts or have the workshops for the concepts that the kids would be learning in the beginning of the year and then they move forward this is also not just the volunteer group making the crosswalk or the people going to the workshops but you have um now staff who are ready to start reviewing different texts reviewing different resources so that they'll be able to make a recommendation to us this year um about Direction because as Karen already said go maath is is at the end of go maath is gone I was going to say it's sorry beyond the end of its life and um outdated in in yes our version is yes our version I shouldn't say the whole company just our version yeah okay next so go for it that's me um that's fine so the first thing listed on here this lifted edu it's a digital platform it connects um with our um IEP online our special education um data collection to help staff not just with the compliance in the IEPs but it also really helps them make databased decisions helps um be able to explain the staff to be able to explain to parents and Guardians what these goals are educational goals and then provides opportunities to help Target the professional development to provide again online coaching um to help the staff meet those individual needs it is specific um to our special ed program and it is targeted to our autism program specifically the master teacher the par educator online training um we've had something similar I understand over the years these are a 100 different you know probably even more um self-paced courses we are using it with our pair professionals General educ ation and special education all of it is um resour research based but for me it's not just an online watch the staff actually has to move their way through the program there is a test if you will an assessment at the end of each course um and then there is the opportunity for us as observers to be able to go in and see that appli that uh practical application of the work actually in the classroom and with students which is pretty great honestly um Marco Polo for educators um expanded this year it is also an online component it is for our prek program again it's building resources adding to the curriculum providing um an online platform um not just for the students but for the families parent resources it's bilingual resources uh a number of instructional videos it's been it's gotten good feedback from our early learner families and then of course our new teacher training and support this has um required um some reconfiguring they in this District which is amazing have always had multiple days of new teacher and Mentor training for our new staff this year with our um inability to be in the building um we were not able to do multiple days so we had the one day and the mentors received training on their own we have um principal team has done a really nice job of making sure that the staff is supported making sure that their mentors are supported um as administrators we're coaching in um I know know you voted the mentor plan I August maybe September I'm not sure when our mentoring and professional development plan and even that has been expanded to to include opportunities Beyond um what were provided at the beginning of the year and that continues we do ongoing meetings after school just with the new staff and their mentors to just check in what it what's working what's not what do you need because everybody's day gets pretty busy yeah no it's it's important though yes if you look um we've been very fortunate with our staff but we do have um even if they're only new to us and not brand new teachers learning a new culture learning a new climate learning different curriculum using different resources takes some work right and again we have our mentors we're all coaching in um I think we will try and return to more summer work next year when we are able to be in the buildings um and yet still continue this enhanced you know after school and ongoing as going say we have a lot of new professional learning why don't you I I was going to say I I can hit the ones that I'm a part of or you can can hit I'm part of so the one I'm a part of is the lifeline suicide prevention um so that's for staff and student training we've talked about it um in the curriculum before it's from Empower Somerset they came out and they did a full staff training at Valley View and for our child study team and a few select um Bayberry teachers um to help train the staff on what to do if you see signs um from a student that they are um in danger either of themselves or others and how to support them how to have those conversations what the protocol is um there's also training um for the kids it's part of our health curriculum that we added in and again it's it's teaching them the conversation teaching them how to get help teaching them if their friends need help who to reach out to um that's part of what we want them to do is be there for each other but also know they can't take care of those problems they do need to go to an adult um and then also we have training for key staff that if God forbid there is any type of tragedy in the district how do we come together as a crisis support team and how do we support our students and our staff through that so that's what the lifeline Suicide Prevention um training is from Empower Somerset um the other thing is we have The Crisis Prevention Institute Training which is non-violent Crisis Intervention techniques um all of Bayberry went through that training um on the PD day that we just had in October and my staff will be going through that in the spring and to build on that we have the reframing behavior which is also o Crisis Prevention Institute Training um what those focus on is if we do have a student who is having a behavior um how do we safely contain the behavior so that way they don't hurt themselves and they don't hurt anyone else and then the reframing behavior is really looking at how do we help how do we catch those signs how do we teach kids how to catch those signs how do we catch those signs before it escalates so those that's in a nutshell um the three programs I know a little bit about and I'm just going to build on that reframing behavior the CPI reframing Behavior because that is happening in both schools you have um volunteer teachers who are becoming certified in this program they will turn key to the rest of the staff there additional opportunities for more people to be certified and it is a very comprehensive look at how to um more than manage Behavior right how how to understand the behaviors to make the best decisions to help students and this is general education um as well which I think is important yeah it's a proactive approach it's not a reactive approach which is why I like it and I like that the staff thought it was important enough to volunteer to become a part of it and to become certified in it um we did talk about the Marco Polo the online piece but also on that October 14th um professional learning day there was on-site training for the prek staff and using those resources sharing them with families our creative curriculum is um the model that we use for Early Childhood as part of that um we were able to restore some online um professional development that had been cut previously again um really favorable feedback from the staff for bringing that back uh non which took us a while to to understand and unfortunately Denise and Nicole are spearheading this um but they they let us know that it is also a crisis in behavior management tool they add um two inservice days inperson inservice days which is also followed up by the the same type of coaching and job embedded professional learning um I think you can hear a theme right we we are committed not just to the social emotional learning the mental health right you heard us talk about executive functioning you've heard us talk about decision making all of this ties in because it impacts academics it impacts what's happening in the classroom it impacts a teacher's ability to deliver instruction to make connections with students so we're really really pleased that we're able to do that um Wilson foundations is a program that we've had in the district it is um reading and writing program at the K to second grade levels it is um Orton Gillingham based but what was added or enhanced if you will is also another opportunity for professional development integrated to the work we're already doing model lessons resources and this is really important as Karen talked about with the ELA curriculum changes looking at that science of reading and writing right um we all know phonics right basics of instruction um are part of the curriculum they always have been we are seeing um at those early grades that K12 a need for that enhanced work and that's what this funhub is that um they were able to um expand our existing program and it sounds like the students are enjoying it too the kids if you know Wilson at all it's very multisensory handson um a apple a yep it's they love it all of that we love okay next Aaron okay so this isn't new but this is this is the bread and butter of what we do every day the datab based decision making for intervention and enrichment um at both schools we have professional learning teams um what they do is they really work on looking at the data and setting goals again you've heard Dr Glazer say the term job embedded professional development this is what they do they sit there they look at um student work not just data like njsla scores it may be an essay that all the kids in sixth grade had and you'll get the team of La teachers to look at it and what worked well what's working what isn't working how did you teach this how did I how am I going to teach it what did they learn last year there's a vertical articulation as well as just looking at it at the grade level um math and language arts Workshop classes so out of those PLC teams they'll come and recommend kids for enrichment opportunities they might um also recommend them for remediation or extra help which is what our Workshop classes are here at Valley View they're taught by the content and grade level teachers so they already know what the student expectations are for the most part they already have the students and know what the students personally need and it gives them an opportunity to enhance the data analysis to identify their student strengths and weaknesses and build on those and remediate those this year we added used to just be 6 through eight that we ran U language arts and math workshop for we added fifth grade math Workshop um fifth grade language arts is still a double period unlike 6 seven and 8 which I mentioned before so we did did not think it was necessary to add The Language Arts Workshop to fifth grade um there really is no time in their schedule but we were able to add that extra support for math in fifth grade this year um we do have our pursuit of Excellence program at both schools that's a before after and summer program for students in both special education and general education again they're identified through these PLC team meetings um teacher recommendations and of course parents input um then we also have a flex period at Valley View so to start the year off that's more of a study hall helping kids get organized and settled into the year um learning their lockers which some for some of them it takes four years but that's okay um we're patient always practice at home uh and then it moves on to more of an elective base so then what we do is we already offer band and chorus during our Flex time but then what we do is we move into some Cho so um each teacher who has a flex classroom will then decide what that classroom is going to be what the theme for it is and then students will sign up um we try to give kids their first and second choice um and every marking period will change and one of those options is usually study hall one of those options is extra math help maybe they really love math um and then it can be a variety of different things um during these times we also do make sure that if students do need to get extra work done or see a teacher or make up a test that they could leave that themed classroom and go do that somewhere else or they could go do that at the side of the classroom so it's not eliminating a a a time to get things done or to make up work but it is giving them a little bit of choice in their day and a little bit of enrichment um sixth grade we did add study skills to the sixth grade rotation so they will have a study skills class um three times per week again it's looking at organization it's looking at how do I manage that transition from fifth to sixth grade and we're we're something that people have been asking for so we're hoping um it's a big experiment this year so we'll say I'm sure it's going to be a big success um some of the kids absolutely love it and some of them they need to have a little more structure on how to use it yet so we're working on it um and then at Bayberry they do um their reading specialist is an early intervention for struggling readers and it was expanded to K through 4 but that's because they had to eliminate their basic skills position so previously at Bayberry there was a basic skills teacher that supported kids in language arts and math and that position was cut because we were making room for class sizes and classroom teachers um so the reading specialist has um that role has been expanded to K through 4 but just for reading and and they use again they analyze the reading data they use thatc yep but for this because the person or reading specialist list is stretched it really is targeted to those reading well below grade level where in the past we were able to help any struggling reader um basic skills overall reading math is definitely um something that has to be looked at in addition to you know what we are offering with all of the flex programs pursuit of Excellence yeah Bayberry had a big hit it was a big hit to them academic initiatives we talked about updating the curriculum to align with the new Ela and math um State Standards um really identifying those essential standards to allow for teaching for depth and complexity um whether that's due to a cut in time like my U Middle School ELA teachers or whether it's just looking at what do the kids absolutely need to know and where do we need to dive deep um bayber is looking at revising their report cards to align with the essential content and skills uh the problem-based learning tasks really integrating with them um within the curriculum they're not Standalone tasks or projects they are part of the curriculum um research and identify the research-based resources again this is looking at all those changes all the research for science of reading um what are we doing with our curriculum what resources are we using how can we give our kids the you know best foot forward with the most um upto-date resources at their finger fingertips and for our teachers and bbid has purchased additional resources so far um fun and focus intervention kits de quotable readers and funhub which Dr Glazer talked before are all focused on um infusing the science of reading Research into it and The Reflex Math Grant is a third grade pilot for math fact fluency adaptive and individualized um and we're seeing that uh that trickle up effect where our kids don't really know their their facts um the ones from covid that wasn't really uh they weren't doing their what did they some of them had driver's license that you would earn if you learned your fast facts and things like that so we can all practice those and I just along with this know this is really as as Karen said where we can go deep right we did curriculum writing this summer in language arts and math social studies science we um updated PE this is the post that has happened in a very long time bberry they um began looking at their Ela looking at math um Karen talked about the revision to the report cards so it actually align with the grade level skills and content those things give us the very best possible information right everything that you've heard about and there's a lot happening right we I would tell you that that there are so many things that are happening to address these but the the very best thing we can do right if we are going to meet that goal of raising achievement and a long-term process because this is not easy work by the way this doesn't happen and phis this is not going to be a surprise when I say this this doesn't happen overnight change takes years 3 to 5 years it it could take eight years depending on the initiative and I know that's hard to hear but I'm also going to just repeat the other thing that I've said over time you know looking at achievement is ongoing supporting it investing in it ongoing curriculum writing and horizontal and vertical articulation ongoing review and investment in resources not um starting stopping starting changing right and again I don't think we could overstate the professional learning part right to build that depth of knowledge for staff for students content so the these are the you know you you see the concerns we see them all right we we know what they are but these are the things that really um are targeted to address what we're trying to accomplish you got the yeah so the remaining slides are all um by grade level their performance by demographic so again um you have the color coded the very the lightest purple is did not meet expectations then it gets the shades get a little bit darker partially met approached met and then exceeded is the darkest color you also can read it from what Aron can you zoom it a little bit can you make it any bigger there you go don't lose the ethnicity or it won't make sense anymore more this the left side yep thank you you can also read it from left to right um knowing that the kids on the the the percentages on the left are the the lowest performing percentage and all the way to the right is the highest performing um you'll notice that for some of our subcategories it just says nine or fewer which means that there weren't enough students to report um how they did so the first you'll see gender female male and male then you'll see it broke down by ethnicity Asian black African-American Hispanic or Latino white and then two or more races and these are the federal designations next slide then you'll see students with disabilities IEP and 504 are included in that category but they're pulled separately multilingual learners and then the other demographic is non-economically disadvantaged and that's a change yeah I'm pretty sure they always called it they went to economically disadvantage so they're phrasing it in the positive non-economically disadvantaged so that was grade three grade four same categories I'll give you a minute to look at them we do gender and ethnicity on the first slide second slide we're looking at students with disabilities multilingual Learners and then are non-economically disadvantaged this is just Ela and math grade five again gender ethnicity students with disabilities multilingual Learners and then are non-economically disadvantaged next grade six gender and ethnicity students with disabilities multilingual Learners you're good taking pictures but the presentation will get posted on the website so you save yourself some energy I'm watching you try and get these tiny things it'll come up on the website later and then grade seven you've got them go Aon you're going faster than I good grade eight remember grade seven and eight the math data is split into those three different or two or three different math assessments so that will skew our demographics also there's Algebra 1 geometry okay then we go on to science this one looks a little bit different because of the way that the that we get the data from the state they they spend a lot more time I think on the math and Ela than they do on the science when it comes to but here you'll see a chart that basically shows I can't even read it with my glass is it's so small but it breaks it down again by those same categories gender ethnicity race students with disabilities multilingual Learners so you have it all in one page for grade five and one page for grade eight the categories that are blocked out are because when they gave me the data when they made us be able to see the data we could see the true percentages but if it was under 10 students I can't show them publicly so that's why they're blacked out so did you do five and8 eight yep that one was eight that was zoomed in perfect next slide that's it for us there you go all right thank you Karen don't sit down yet though because the board gets to ask questions fellis you can ask fellis ask just a little for all of us everybody fellis ask yes I just wanted to know if Karen could just explain a little bit about the science of reading just I I don't want the whole thing I know but just a little bit because some people don't understand what it is there's actually science of reading and writing yeah okay so in a nutshell um the research has shown that what we used to do is we used to do a whole language based Workshop reading and writing type of instruction at the lower grade levels um which was more open and dependent on what kids were reading and exploring without explicit teaching of phonics and grammar and vocabulary and things like that um that has shifted where now you're going to see more of the phonics the vocabulary the grammar things like that that are prescribed and put back into the curriculum for the lower grades rather than seeing where they fall um it was it was more of depent student dependent like what would a student what would where would they be rather than all kids are going to learn how to capitalize all kids are going to learn how to do uh sound out a word things like that I think that's the simplest no it it is and it's bonic but it's also Al vocabulary it's also um becoming a fluent reader understanding right your comprehension skills understanding um the content knowledge you've heard me use that language a lot tonight because we are not reading you only used to be tested and taught to read in English language class right there is Reading in math there is Reading in science and social studies so that content developing that cont content knowledge and the way to attack um reading in the content areas is definitely part of it I will also say that one of the things that we um really like about it is um in that whole language model right we had uh Mentor text anchor text that still exists but it's very much broadened right topicwise it's a balanced it's a balanced approach now more skills to it it's it's you know so the the interesting thing is for the older grades that really doesn't change what they do these are the things they've been doing anyway in the Middle School um so it's really just kind of looking at if things are still aligned to the right grade levels or not but the elementary school it's a big change yeah any questions about anything the presentation or overall question overall initiatives professional development and y's moving her microphone yeah I I mean there's clearly a lot of work to do and I know that this test was taken last year before a lot of these new initiatives began in the summer um and it's clear that we're doing better in some areas than others I I wanted to ask a couple questions the first is just with with regard to the equity data because there was so much of it um are there any sort of bullet points or important notes that you would pull from that either of you that might change some of those initiatives now that we have that information or not or so the the the deeper dive that the teachers and I are able to do is we can see what areas specifically on each test the kids did or didn't do well on um and especially with math and that were they're going to these conquer math workshops they actually analyze the test questions so they get to see which test questions match which Concepts and standards so what wording is being used on the test so that way is it a vocabulary issue do they not know the testing vocabulary but they understood the math concept is it the fact that they have to take the the math test on a computer rather than using pen and paper did they not know how to manipulate manipulate the computer to get the right answer which is for our lower Learners and also for like our third graders it's the first time that they're really doing this I helps a little bit but I doesn't mirror exactly the same online tools so we're able to take that deeper dive whether it's Concepts and skills or the types of questions so those are the things that we look at and it helps Target kind of where we want to do the work and how we want to change what we're doing got and from an equity standpoint not just demographics right but access what do we have access to as far as resources curriculum we're pretty um fortunate in Watchung Burl we are currently with a onetoone initiative there isn't anybody without access to um devices to practice on internet to practice on I am thrilled I to have two um Librarians fully staffed looking at our collections making sure that even the available materials are Equitable right so it it is a bigger picture and big conversation um but definitely at the four Forefront I noticed um with Ela the third grade uh scores were a little bit different from the rest of them and you mentioned that there is the lack of professional development in K to2 does that is that related are there other is there other anything else to so that would be related um for language arts as well as math but especially math um but with the standards changing and the science of reading and we're still using the teachers College materials from way before I was here so their curriculum and instruction and resources haven't been updated to match the test so that's kind of what we're working to it's also their first time taking the test so it's not a great indicator um and also I me which I think were you looking at the first Slide the uh compared to the state the ELA data yeah so it you'll see that that two percentage points um that maybe you're looking at or just the overall difference like two percentage points is one and a half kids if you're looking at like the full amount of kids in third grade that took it so if you're saying it's 2% difference in anything that's like one and a half children I don't know how they cut them in half but that's how that works so right and I would say Danielle when you know the staff gets the data and starts to really dig into it disaggregate it I do know at that lower Ela levels yes we're looking really strongly at reading I would say writing um when you actually analyze the data is a place that um I know Denise is really focus in on she you can see in the kinds of resources she's Chosen and the things that she's added to really enhance that writing yeah and that's keyboarding skills so they may able they may be writing their writer's notebook all day long and then you you're asking them to respond to these lengthy um constructed responses in a test using a keyboard so they probably can't type as quickly and they run out of time to get their thoughts it's timed yeah it just seems really important to highlight thew of the basic skills teacher it is and and we have we have a a portion of one back can you just talk about that we don't have not we were not able to restore the basic skills you've always had a reading specialist at Bayberry that reading specialist um worked in tandem with the basic skills teacher it is reading only on only with k 2 so the reading specialist was able to help those kids that were still learning to read they usually say third grades when you make the switch from Le learning to read to reading to learn and the basic skills teacher was then helping those kids in grades three and four in math and language arts and now you have one person reading only doing that K Ford during the school day and we supplement with again the pursuit of Excellence trying to help um our existing staff with the content knowledge strategies and skills to teach you know um the different levels right to personaliz that instruction and to be able to have a a toolkit basically so the classroom teacher responsible for those children classroom teacher is always responsible for every child in their classroom also for every child in their classroom even even if a child qualifies for basic skills P you know pursuit of Excellence sore enrichment whatever there a classroom teacher if you have 18 children in your class regardless of who those children are they are all yours I had a question for principal K one of the points that you mentioned for an academic initiative was that uh study skills are added to the sixth grade the first time it's three times per week yes what is the format for that how so what we have is we have a rotation where they rotate between in two periods periods four and seven if I remember correctly um I had to get creative uh they rotate between going to their world language class their um PE class and a study skills class so between those two periods they get to get meet their PE requirement their World Language requirement and then we were able to add those three classes three times a week of study skills thank you you're welcome anyone else I I just wanted to say I said this to you in the meeting but um I just my husband and I were very pleased with our our children's I ready results and our uh njsla results so I just wanted to thank the administration and the teachers um for all their hard work and I'm sure I'm not the only parent I've spoken to many others who are very pleased with the scores that their children received this year I know the kids are working really hard with the teachers so thank you all for all your dedication and hard work thank you thank you Mrs Harvey second that thank you anyone else no all right I'll be back for the principles I was going to say we also still have Nicole's and there might be questions with the HIV it's a short one you don't have to stand up there I think it's she recorded it no I think she recorded it so as I said Nicole um Miss D too our director of special services did have um a family uh emergency but she took the time to record this because again this is another state required um public report this is our self assessment for the grades under the anti-bullying um Bill of Rights act so twice a year you you get reports on the hibs right the self assessment actually comes from each school and you'll see this and you'll this is um perception from the staff and what is good about this and Nicole I'm sure will say this I haven't heard her recording it also helps us Target right programs Target professional development Target um our practices so Aon I think we're ready whenever New Jersey Department of Education School self assessment for determining grades under the anti-bullying Bill of Rights Act July 1st 2023 through June 30th 2024 what is the self assessment each school is required to evaluate its implementation of the anti-bullying Bill of Rights from July 1st 2023 through June 30th 2024 by using the self assessment tool this tool includes eight core elements that address all of the anti-bullying Bill of Rights requirements for schools each school will then assign a rating for each indicator based on the criteria that are set ratings must align with any other data collected such as the data submitted through the student safety data system findings from monitoring under the New Jersey quality single accountability Continuum or qac findings from investigations of complaints conducted by the New Jersey Department of Education county office or the office of fiscal accountability and compliance or any other sources of information core element number one harassment intimidation and bullying programs approaches or other initiatives the school annually established Hib programs approaches or other initiatives the school annually implemented number two training on the board of education approved Hib policy and procedures School Employees contracted service providers and volunteers were provided training on the Hib policy the Hib policy training included instruction on preventing Hib on the basis of protected categories enumerated in the anti-bullying Bill of Rights and other distinguishing characteristics that may incite incidents of discrimination or Hib the Hib policy was discussed with students in accordance with the district's process for these discussions core element number three other staff instruction and training programs each teaching staff member completed at least two hours of instruction in suicide prevention that included information on harassment intimidation and bullying in each 5-year professional development period each teaching staff member completed at least 2 hours of instruction on harassment intimidation and bullying prevention in each 5-year professional development period the school anti-bullying specialist was given time during the usual school schedule to participate in inservice training in preparation to act as the anti-bullying specialist the members of the school safety School climate team were provided with professional development in effective practices of successful School climate programs or approaches School building leaders have received information on the prevention of harassment intimidation and bullying as part of their training on issues of school ethics School law and school governance core element number four curriculum and instruction on Hib and related information and skills the school provided ongoing age appropriate instruction on preventing Hib in accordance with the New Jersey student learning standards the school observed the week of respect during the week beginning with the first Monday and October of each year recognizing the importance of character education by providing age appropriate instruction focusing on harassment intimidation and bullying prevention core element number five Hib Personnel the principal appointed a school anti-bullying specialist the anti-bullying specialist met at least two times per school year with the district anti-bullying coordinator the school safety School climate team met at least two times times per school year to develop Foster and maintain a positive School climate by focusing on the ongoing systemic process and practices in the school and to address School climate issues including harassment intimidation and bullying core element number six School level Hib incident reporting procedures the school implemented the district's procedure for reporting Hib that includes includes all required elements the school implemented the district's procedure for reporting new information on a prior Hib report core element number seven Hib investigation procedure the school followed the Board of Education approved policy on harassment intimidation and bullying investigation procedures which provide for notification to parents of alleged offenders and alleged victims in each reported Hib incident completion of the investigation within 10 school days of the written incident report preparation of a written report on the findings of each Hib investigation and results of the investigation being reported to the chief School administrator within two school days of completion of the investigation core element number eight Hib reporting the school has as a procedure for ensuring that staff member reports include the required information for all incidents of violence vandalism and Hib the official grades received from the New Jersey Department of Education for the self assessment from the previous reporting period for the school and for the school district are posted on the homepage of the school's website per the anti-bullying Bill of Rights and the requirements of the New Jersey Department of Education in conclusion the self assessment for bayber and Valley View schools each core element indicator on the self assessment was rated for each School based on the criteria established by the Department of Education to determine the school's self assessment scores for the 2023 2024 school year Bayberry School scored 7 72 out of 78 points and valy View School scored 71 out of 78 points the official grades received from the New Jersey Department of Education for the self assessment will replace the reports that are currently posted on the website these results will be used to guide the work of the anti-bullying Specialists and the school safety School climate teams in the areas of programs training and Reporting thank you thanks Nicole and it really I do mean that she took the time to do that despite um what was going on at home so very much appreciated so everybody could understand I know again that we have the presentation more than once a year but is there any question from the board do do you know what it is but okay okay is this a good time to share some ideas that I have no no thank you though when can I do it curriculum committee and then we bring it forward but we have I will say and and I know Nicole alluded to this you know we have already started talking about our parent series on Hib and actually doing a series um some of the things um that we spoke about during the assessment report related to the behavior and strategies has a very strong um parent and Community involvement component so I think as we talk more about that hopefully it aligns with some of your ideas the njsla uh scource you what I want to say something about the oh well Karen asked if you had it's for us I wanted to share it with the board actually but they should here no no I I meant sent a home no she asked if you had questions no these aren't moved on statements I want to make I know okay again Manny that's up to you but you I don't know when you're supposed to do these things that's why I'm asking Bo business I could wait that late okay or you could have done it with other ready people commented I I don't know I don't want to make Karen have to stay till the end if the comments are directed to to that go ahead bis aon's fixing your microphone while she's doing that I was just curious do we know what last year's scores were for him do we know what last year they're on they're on the website still so could open up and look the same thank you I was going to say did you look thank you because I was going to they are posted it doesn't change dramatically in the self assessment the actual what what gets reported in the spring based on the real numbers I think and we don't really change that much either one great thank you right pis okay all right all right after reviewing these njsla scores I just think it would be in our children's best interest if we as a board set goals in mathematics Ela science that enter like the 80th percentile we did reach scores in the 80s in ela in grades five and8 however our math scores and even the ELA scores are very weak in the grades how are we going to prepare our children for success in the high school if we don't set goals in the lower grades and Middle School uh children entering fifth grade especially should have a solid knowledge of fractions that fifth grade math can build on fractions are the foundations of percents ratios algebra and higher math we should not be looking at the state averages when we compare our scores we should be setting our own standards to get to at least 80% proficiency this is how we will prepare our children for the future we should compare how we are doing with surrounding districts with similar makeups as such as ours our board owes it to our students to provide the foundation for future success we are not anywhere where we used to be and to me this is sad I just want to get us better I had to sh share that with you oh thank you and you know for everybody just um the proficiencies aren't based on that percentage right they're not based any longer the they tests when you asked me about the tests from 10 years ago were three tests away and um each content area has its own scale score and I know again we've talked about this we all agree and we all do set goals both principles every grade level team we are not without goals or purpose or direction we all have that same shared Collective Vision right to to move forward I think part of The Challenge from what you're saying of course we look at similar districts every body's just reporting now right we could look at last year's but we do look at that and we are provided with information um to be able to do that down the road you know beyond the goal setting I I have to say the skills what what Mrs kid was talking about with curriculum writing looking at making sure our curriculum is aligned with the skills that are being tested at the grade level and that our resource are aligned and you know I you called out fractions but fractions start in kindergarten they are the basis right of what we do moving up um we start algebra in kindergarten they're the basis of what we do moving up and um although I did hear Mrs kid identify that some of the basics were lost um as much as we don't like to talk about it during Co that the work we did with repetition multiplication tables um that's why since then she again she talked about her four years here I can only speak to this year but that is already already a focus that is there is not um an overlooking of skills or or goals are wanting to do better and Karen I see you just okay I was going to say I could see you but I if if there was something else you wanted to add since you also have presented this tonight and in committee I think think the biggest thing about is exactly what our teacher teams are working on in their professional orties they are identifying goals for their grade level they're identifying goals for their classes we're teaching kids how to identify their own goal learning goals and how to track them and speak a plan for them so yes phis everything that you're asking for we're doing so thank you for reinforcing and supporting it I I just wanted to comment on that and say you know we hear a lot in the curriculum committee which you're the chair of that uh we hear all of the initiatives from the administration we hear all of the goals and everything that are professional teachers are are adding to the curriculum and to the students experience and I think as a board one of the ways that we can help make that better is when we supported the budget this year to help a lot of those initiatives take place and that we continue to do that in the future because they're the ones who are in the classrooms with the children and they know exactly what's needed as opposed to board members who are sitting here so listening to what our Administration and teachers are asking of us in order to support those children in the classroom is is pivotal for us to increase test scores and again supporting the budget as well well I just would like to uh say I agree with phyllis's comments here that I uh appreciate her just putting out to the board for our discussion um and you know I think that board members or um members of the community would feel more comfortable uh supporting uh higher budget in increases if there was a goal in place that focused on academic achievement I think that um we have um not seen a goal I know the six years or more I've been following the the board and watch on closely more closely uh than just um casual observation and there's have been board members members requesting a goal of this kind that that Phyllis mentioned for those six years but it hasn't happened yet and I think it's a good idea I think that we um next opportunity one of our functions as a board is to approve those goals and that we should uh really request that one of them be what I had advocated for at the time of our last goal setting was a smart goal uh something that was specific measur achievable and um so I think that you know relevant and time uh sensitive also and you know I don't think that all change has to take 3 to 5 years or eight years I I recall uh early in those six years uh we had a a change and uh there was a interm superintendant that came in um for a year and we had some significant improvement in our test scores and things in that one year um and so I I understand that some change does take many years but I'm also optimistic that if we have u a focus on the goals to uh improve these scores that we can uh start seeing those improvements uh in a shorter time frame and so um I appreciate Phil's comments and um appreciate the opportunity to share my thoughts echoing those comments thank you and and we all appreciate it I think that there is a recognition that not all change takes that length of time but I also would um make the acknowledgment I don't know about the interim I actually am not maybe we could have that conversation um offline but I would be interested to know what was put in place prior what were we building on because I will say um in the short time I'm here but the time working with the leadership team that you have and the the board that's been in place including yourself and um to other people that um have since um gone from the board I think that there's been a tremendous focus on academic achievement I think um a smart goal is is critical and important I think that it also has to be placed in a timely way I'm not sure before we've implemented anything different we can hope to impact now we have right now we are starting to implement things now we're starting to be able to say hey how might this impact this that or the other thing and and again I think that um we continue to set those goals Karen did I see you again am I missing something okay and again I know things um maybe what would be an example of a smart goal so a smart goal is as Anthony um spelled out the acronym smart s right is specific M measurable a attainable are realistic or relevant one of the two depending on what kind of goal you're trying to set and T timely time bound has a timeline for accomplishment and that timeline could be any anywhere on the Continuum so it might say something along the lines of um as a result of increased conquer math professional learning we expect to see um an increase of use of targeted strategies for instructional practice including the use of and again it would be grade level specific so I'm just making it up um manipulatives or some other practice right that would impact that goal that achievement in a timely time frame I guess is the best way to say it does that help and yes it could have just don't sound specific enough for me that's what well so it depends on what we're setting a goal for right I know that um Anthony you too not to I'm not diminishing that um contribution you know to to give a specific percentage or a specific number the challenge with that is it depends what you're it can't just be a global you know 10% because you're you have individual students individual um things that we're trying to look at and as Karen pointed out a 2% difference depending on the grade level right could be one child but say have 20 children you would expect at least 15 of them to get this amount of information that's we expect everybody to get the information there is a difference between it being taught and it being learned there are things you know that I would what do we expect the students to know and be able to do how do we know that they know it and are able to do it what is that demonstration right it's not the njsla test it is it is a much broader look and as as even the state will tell you um multiple measures looking at multiple Dynamics so you could have that specific smart goal but I think we even need to break it down further than just a global yeah I knew it I knew it that's acronym stood for but I just wanted one of them thank you okay we still going I'm sorry I'm off the agenda page hold on at this time we're going to move to section D enrollment thank you um so we included enrollment again I gave it in September because it was the beginning of the school year and I give it again in October because in October we're required to report to the state are accurate numbers the October 15th numbers that are reported are the basis of much of our state aid um enrollment figures we are currently uh eight students fewer districtwide than we were on October 15th last year so we're pretty stable not not a lot of um change to that enrollment thank you okay we're going to skip skip executive session for now um as we had mentioned in the beginning of this meeting we're going to um we're going to work through uh the sections and we're going to get to comment some of the public prior to our executive session um so now um we're going to move on to uh superintendent's remarks actually it's principal report we'll let Mrs kid go home oh yeah it's a long night my dogs have to go to the bom I bet all right good evening everyone I'm pleased to present the highlights from Bayberry and Valley View schools for the month of October at Valley View we continue with our Mountaineer Monday activities which focused on building social awareness across the school these activities were designed to help students develop empathy and Foster a more inclusive School Community small group discussions and the empathy game were key to helping students recognize and respect others feelings perspectives and needs large team activities such as a mirror mirror move warm-up creating a compliment chain which you could see hung out by the gymnasium and a human knot activity provided Hands-On and physical experiences that promoted collaboration communication and understanding our student council elections took place on October 9th I am happy to announce the results congratulations to our new president omes cholan our vice president Victoria scal our secretary Giovani Valentine and our treasure haly Gilligan these students demonstrated leadership and enthusiasm um during their speeches and they've already begun all of their brainstorming in student council um and we look forward to their contributions this year on October 11th the IR diagnostic results for parents were posted in the Genesis Parent Portal providing valuable insight into the student progress in both reading and Mathematics we also held a successful staff inservice day on October 14th we had a consultant from IDE present to staff from both Valley View and Bayberry and the entire District on the implementation of problem-based learning tasks um differentiating instruction executive functioning um and they will continue to work uh as a coach with both schools um in the months to come I think what Monday Bayer's first one it's ID yep third and fourth grade yep um and then for Valley View it will be w Wednesday of next week so uh Bayberry celebrated fire prevention week with an all school assembly on fire safety by the Watchung fire department students that participated in the fire safety poster contest at both Valley View and Bayberry were recognized um and the kindergarten got to visit the truck which I think is the most exciting thing October was filled with spirit and themed activities we began by celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month followed by the week of respect School violence awareness week and we are currently in Red Ribbon Week staff and students embrace the themes with enthusiasm showing their support through daily announcements classwide activities and schoolwide events Bayberry had a successful candy Wars competition and collected over 900 lbs of candy to be donated to the we Trunk or Treat this Saturday thank you to everyone for your generosity and have a good night thanks Ken safe home please safe home do you have from business insurance yeah in uh business office we completed our inperson audit so they have left the building um the next two weeks by the next two weeks we have to finish up all the reporting anything extra they've asked us for any clarifications and hopefully we'll be done by the end of by November 1st that's that our hope and giving them the time now to put together the reports and the journal entries and all that fun stuff it's pretty much it for the business office was a lot all about audit yes yes it was a lot on our staff I you know always wish to thank them uh even you know to note that along with the referendum all the extra work then the audit it's just been it's been nonstop I'm just hoping that no one burns out in there slow it down right that's it from us thank you oh thank you so you got to hear from um Connor early on and see some pictures from the projects at both schools we are still moving although they're still working um for me I am just thrilled that the art room the library is being fully used um Karen left before I got to say this but the main office here at Valley View um is for the most part complete as Connor said we have punch lists and that kind of thing um but it is really looking lovely and I am looking forward to welcoming all of you the whole Community to be able to come in um to be able to take a tour we'll also um in mid November they'll be restoring the um Adventure Course here at Valley View in the gym and we'll do a ribbon cutting for that um and thank you again to we for funding that and bringing able to bring that program back to us um I am as Connor said really hopeful that U most of what's Happening from now forward is in the background and we will do our um next phase which would be a town hall talking about the remaining projects we have fields we have an outdoor learning Commons that um um was part of the scope of work of the referendum so we'll talk about that um as a community then um kind correct me if I'm wrong after that we go out we advertise and then bid for that work to be done next summer so we'll have those um conversations coming up just to finish up with the referendum for my piece actually since so much of what I am talking about got reported it's easy for me to to skip through um transportation Denise wanted me um to share that for the first time in the time that she has been here all buses arriving at Bayberry in the morning um not just um on time but ahead of schedule so that she has been able to do the announcements each morning at 8:45 before even the change to um the first period class the afternoon with the exception of today and by the way it even took me 45 minutes to to get through town this afternoon um we have been really consistent um with timing of the buses arriving um by dismissal and having children home by around 4:15 420 on all eight routes um we will be we were looking for a full two weeks of consistency um just to make sure before we updated everything in the afternoon for Genesis um but I'm really pleased with how those um conversations have gone with the staff they have had a huge piece to make sure that we could um get kids on the buses more quickly afternoon um make sure that the I get it wrong every time pickup Patrol not Paw Patrol pickup Patrol um was being implemented for everybody we always have a lot of new families at the beginning of the year and that causes confusion um we are of course continuing um to look at a few things but for the most part when um we can get accurate afternoon we'll be in a good space to just focus on the remaining issues um for those of you have heard me report um previously we continue to meet with the police I I think I talked to Chief Anderly um as much as I talk to anybody on our staff um we continue to have our meetings with the mayor and the um burough administrator I think my next one is Tuesday Monday or Tuesday um and I'm really valuing that opportunity for collaboration and to be looking at this as a broad picture we each have our own authority we each have our own responsibilities but it has really been um an asset to to be able to work with our whole Community um I'm also really excited Aaron in case you're asleep back there I'm also really excited that on the professional learning day Aaron was able to um bring teams of teachers together he is revitalizing our technology committee um he is um been able to have volunteers from both schools I think there were 15 people here told me that attended the first meeting um they are looking to do a tech survey a tech plan Tech plan has not been done um for a number of years in the district and obviously this is important again not just for delivery of instruction but really important for long range planning strategic planning budgetary planning so Aaron thank you for um getting that committee started and revitalized ing that we um as part of several different initiatives um our strategic planning process the regionalization survey we be launching a culture and climate survey to our staff the community and our students um in grades I think it's fifth through 8th grade might be fourth grade um this survey is in conjunction it's a a free survey um in conjunction with Ruckers and the Department of Education we had hoped to do it in the spring but it is pretty comprehensive um we will be sending out information to all the families with a look at the survey in advance what the student survey looks like um if you choose to opt your child out you will have that opportunity and then there will be a window for families and our staff St to take the same survey and that data will be used um to again inform our practices as part of our strategic planning but our um other sunding districts with the high school will also be doing this survey and that data will be part of the regionalization study so um we're pretty pleased to be able to participate in that um and to be able to get some of that data um Aaron are you gonna show pictures I know I haven't asked you yet but now is the fun part I think of my reports my favorite part of the report you have you're good so I'll just start talking and you'll all catch up to the pictures because there's some fun ones um Harvest Fest was held in the burrow um at the beginning of the month um the board jumped in this year and had an entry in the chili competition and I couldn't be prder of you guys the chili was excellent let me just start there it was excellent and they were the runner up for the People's Choice Award I'm pretty sure you will get them next year um it was really a a fun day we had the opportunity to spend the day with many of our bir there's Dory look Dory quick um at the chili cooking um but it was a nice day because we were out there there we are serving our chili up hi Jen and Phyllis there you are um but we were out with our police counterparts the EMTs the fire Squad they um were wonderful in uh setting helping us with our tents we had that okay thanks Aaron we had we had um the opportunity to meet with a lot of services I know um um you'll see oh here we are uh Christine Eid and our former board member Dale and Phyllis got us to do which will be I think our next slide um a scarecrow for the Scarecrow stroll this is our entry with our Teachers Association um we're thrilled to be a part of that if you've been out in to the park where over by the dam but all of the entries are pretty great um just another fun collaboration I think they're on display through Halloween um so you'll be be able to continue to see those which is very nice um we had I skipped our benches you'll see on the agenda um that we do have a donation of four of these metal benches they're beautiful it wasn't just the benches it was also the installation all four at Bayberry School the first two you saw are on the playground the others um are installed out front and again that um donation will be on the agenda tonight for um acceptance and then we had um board members we were hopeful that all of our board members would um be in Atlantic City for the New Jersey school boards Association conference I'm going to let our our board talk about it from the county and the state level but I will say um for us we were able to really attend wonderful um sessions everybody uh talking about um a variety of topics oh and I presented two I presented two sessions one on the entry planning and strategic process one on um systemic changes to close achievement gaps but part of um our work down there is really looking at what's possible looking at initiatives looking at what other districts are doing again I think that there was a lot of excitement I'm hoping that you guys will share some of what you saw when it comes time for those reports but I was really really pleased um and grateful honestly for the board's leadership and learning um just just over those few days um I don't know what's up then Karen talked about um uh Red Ribbon Week this week that's was Monday I think we had our I know there's a backside to that t-shirt I'm wearing to end bullying choose to be kind lots of messages around um how that works with technology as well that seems to be a tremendous issue still um so really pleased um to be able to participate with that just a couple of other updates I don't oh and of course I just couldn't resist that as we get ready for um we's going to get this right if it kills me trun or treat on Saturday um I know I see um somebody from ceg so I won't steal your pie sale Thunder um but lots of fun things happening throughout the district and along with that um we are also um kicking off tomorrow you should be seeing this flyer um for dwali if you aren't familiar dwali is the festival celebrating the Triumph of light over Darkness um and knowledge over ignorance we are doing a food drive at both schools Bayberry and Valley View um we were able to collaborate um with the Hindu cultural organization all of the food is going um to our local food pantry and there is a list of what's being collected um non perishable some vegetarian um asks and we're happy to be able to do that um I'm going to skip um since I see our Community Partners here tonight I won't steal your thunder but just a couple of reminders schools are closed Friday November 1st and celebration of dwali we are closed Tuesday November 5th because um our Bayberry school is a public polling place and we are closed um Thursday and Friday um November that's Tuesday the 5th 7th and 8th Thursday and this week um on top of what Dr Glazer has already said one of our board goals um this year is to achieve njsba accreditation for every individual um which which shows an effort at educating and improving all of our our board and the work that we do um so this attending this event was a part of that um so we um got to um participate in a lot of really interesting sessions on academic achievement um uh I attended one on high impact tutoring which was really fascinating um uh on labor negotiations and recent Trends in contract settlements which is uh important as we'll be renegotiating contracts in the fure um digital classrooms was a really fascinating one that came up and on school finances so um we're looking forward to followup conversations on all of these topics both schools always actively looking for volunteers um and we have a new Sweet Treats every Friday now um having dip and dots for the kids uh we are getting ready to launch our celebration books program um it's a new initiative this year to help stock books in the library so the Librarians in each school one for Bayberry and one for valiv have put together Amazon wish list uh and parents to celebrate or acknowledge an event with their children or perhaps something going on in their family are going to be encouraged to purchase a book directly from the wish list get sent right to the school um and we will imprint in the uh cover of the book what this book was purchased for and it will go into circulation in the school library so the books are entirely uh selected by the Librarians it's not from the parents picking their own books uh the parents just get to dedicate the book um hopefully we'll help fill our libraries and give parents another way to celebrate a child's birthday or first tooth they lost or a black belt achievement or something similar um we are hoping to be able to start to get into the schools for our after school clubs those have become somewhat of a fundraiser for the PTO so the quicker we know when we can be in the building we can launch those clubs and start earning some more money uh and then starting to look towards the holidays with our holiday Boutique coming up um we had a fundraiser uh at Cinemark in maung we had a movie theater and we saw I believe it was wild robots uh and hopefully we'll be doing more of those throughout the independently CPAC orders them from cheapest vendors ensures maximum returns for all the funds items include you know seats for special Learners all sorts of supports occupational therapy devices timers pencil grippers special book um sensory toys fidget toys they're just some of the things we end up getting to the school goals for students that need it um I buy and my husband delivers it so potential liability for comments they make to the board the board shall not be held liable for comments made by members of the public hello I'm Jennifer Anderson I'm on upper drive I have two kids at Bayberry in kindergarten and second grade um and I am also an educator I teach in a nearby District um tonight's whole conversation on curriculum instruction this is the backbone of education and honestly when I was going through the website and and looking at the curriculum that is presented to my kindergarten and my second grader I was shocked to find out that our district does not have a director of curriculum nor instruction um or any type of curriculum supervisor to support the staff here in Wata I believe that it is of the utmost importance to invest in our curriculum and instruction for uh the betterment of our students that person could create smart goals um and oversee um the alignment of the curriculum with New Jersey state standards and make sure that our staff is supported with professional development specific to uh the curriculum that's there also um in reviewing curriculum I was also shocked to find out that we are using such outdated materials and resources to educate our children um you know I I don't know if there's policy and procedure here in Wang bro School District um for reviewing curriculum um I don't know how often that happens but where I am it happens within every 5 years we sit down we review how what we are using is aligned to our state standards we're looking at the njsla scores constantly seeing how we can better our curriculum for our students and to know that my kindergartener is using um outdated materials from the teachers College of L Lucy Hawkins is mindblowing to me um also that the go math program is extremely outdated and that is what we are currently using um it's uh I don't even know how to express in words how shocked I was um so my ke to you is to really invest in this and look into finding a point person for curriculum and instruction for our district we are lacking and that is where we can improve we need somebody to guide the way um somebody to review materials to you know it's it I'm pleased to hear that the teachers are a part of this currently and that they are beginning to review um what we are using but it's not enough and it's just adding another layer onto very full plates of teachers um so somebody who can go out there and do the research of what's available best practices and instruction um and making sure that that is happening in our classrooms would benefit everyone in the district um along those lines you know there are some great things things that we are using here in Wong uh I ready is a very useful tool for us to um individualize education plans for everyone across the district however I think the implementation of the instruction and the usage of I ready needs some adjustment my kindergartner comes home every day crying and frustrated that she is doing I ready during rest kindergart gardeners are meant to have a rest period and doing I ready lessons during that time is really frustrating she needs some time to decompress to actually rest and you know working with teachers on um timing of I ready implementation or you know how else we can incorporate those lessons into the day uh would also be beneficial so that's it my bottom line is that we really do need to invest in a director of curriculum and instruction for our district thanks thank you and since Denise isn't here and I don't know if you've shared your concerns with her we'll share that with her good evening everyone I'm Tom NAD Bey and yes I'm a resident been here for quite some time and I you know was watching the presentation particularly about the test scores and you know it was sliced 18 Ways to Sunday and hopefully there's not a quiz on it but what I would like to have seen was kind of a big picture summary and I think Danielle mentioned that you know where is Valley View in math and reading scores Visa this year and last year and the same thing for Bayberry and you know as I looked on the charts best I could tell anywhere between 15 to 60% of our students are not at grade level okay this is uh you know a disaster okay 10 years ago and before that our school was an outlier it's a statistical outlier we're in the top percentiles in the state now we're closer to the middle of the pack okay and then I heard you say you have goals but they're for teachers than everybody else so one question I have is what were the expectations last year for you know this time for taking the test and did we meet those or exceed them this year and then are there Stepping Stones along the way and I know this is going to this is a battleship and you're here at a great time because I think we're down at the bottom of the valley and we want to go up the mountain but we do need mile poost along the way so you know what are the big picture where are we Visa last year and then where do we hope to be next year the year after the year after because some of these programs we can't wait 3 to 5 years to see if they're working or eight years we got to have mile poost to know that this stuff is working in case we have to make course Corrections so that's it thank you thank you after sitting all that time uh H jet I think you know who I am um we've been residents and watch Young for number of years guess it's I'm getting close to 50 or so um I had the same reaction as Tom had uh I have no idea where we are um did we do good on the tests did we do bad on the tests were we okay on the tests is the board happy with where we are yes no a board volunteer the superintendent are you happy with the results Mr jet as you know and we've repeated this isn't a question any this is not question we you presented results if you can't take questions on results we have to sit down and talk so I I will be happy to speak to you at any any time um the public is entitled to know where we are testing wise okay it's a requirement from the state yes it is and I okay and let's lay it on the table where are we okay are we good are we bad or are we ugly nobody wants to tell us it's not that nobody wants to tell you you just had a a very lengthy presentation grade by grade that laid out which percentage of students um are meeting or exceeding expectations Which percentage of students are approaching expectations which are not it was not um 60% not meeting expectations and at almost every grade level and every content area again based only on that state comparison school district and state it is meeting the expectations it is a very subjective are we happy are we not happy how are we doing I can't sir that's very important to know how the board feels is if the board is happy with what we're doing we're not going to change I'm trying to give you the courtesy and respect of answering although it is not our format and you are aware of that um so let me continue that we have already said there are areas of concern there are areas where we need to grow I don't believe that my comment that this work is hard and change takes time 3 to 5 years is a universal comment that every single initiative takes that long or longer it comes at a different timeline everything is monitored and adjusted on an ongoing basis to the um I'm so sorry I don't know your name but to the woman who spoke before you there was a 5-year curriculum cycle curriculum writing wasn't supported curriculum um resources weren't supported so you know I I am going to say as somebody who's only been here for a year and has spent that year listening and analyzing and reviewing we have a lot of work to do we have um a lot of work to do and to you sir I'm sorry I heard your first name didn't catch your last name very well you're talking about test scores over 10 years and program changes taking 3 to 5 years or growth or Milestones I agree with you 100% the same way a lack of investment in the programs didn't happen overnight increasing that academic achievement and again we all have I think looking around the table I don't think anybody has a different goal a different agenda a different um belief aspiration that we can do this and again I think that we spent quite a bit of time tonight talking about the strategies to make that happen there are people who were looking at this and they are evaluating it one of them is US News and World Report uh they will be coming out out with a report on how we performed this is what they said for 2024 they said this is the overview of Bayberry School Bayberry school is a public school located in watchog New Jersey which is a large suburb setting the student population of bbery is 357 and the school serves uh uh uh PRK through four at bur bbery 42% of the students scored above the proficient level in math and 57% scored above the level in reading that means more than half of our kids at baybury are not proficient we didn't see that tonight we didn't see if there was an improvement from this tonight I think the public is owed that we talked about goal settings those are our goals that performance the one which is scary the one which is really scary to me having struggled in math okay I'm an engineer and struggled in math my roommate as a freshman used to read his calculus book come out of the test with an a I studied for 10 hours and came out a c so you know I I know a lot of math no little math very little but I think one of your CH show when our kids leave Valley View okay 50% are not proficient in math to me that is inner city school numbers so I'm going to say that again this would be a great conversation for us to have maybe I'll do a parent series I'm happy to talk to you Offline that is not what I want to be respectful I respectful but I don't think you properly presented where we are where we were last year and where we're going to wind up being reported this year I think if we're going to improve we have to acknowledge where we are that's always the starting point and I saw nothing that acknowledged that we 50% once you get into high school okay you're just going to play catchup you're going to be be math behind forever we are not serving our children when half of them are going into high school and they are not proficient in the basic math the the the basic percentages and the basic numbers and I think what we need to do we need to acknowledge finally and we've been back and forth on this Blue Ribbon thing okay we need to ackn knowled where we are at these sessions and then move forward so again we've already broken our format you've exceeded the time when the alarm went off I do want to say again offline maybe a another conversation we need to be able to have a Common Language and a common understanding of the difference between the new Jersey um testing results you saw and the scale scores right and those scale scores are different for each content area and the definition of proficiency those tests are not based on aund scale or an ABC or that and again in a different format and a different context I will be happy to go through that I will say that the slides as prepared for us and again read you couldn't read by the way they will be what would what you should do is have a handout with those slides for anybody in the audience so they can follow you are not interested in my answer our time is I am interested in your answer I couldn't read what you were presenting so perhaps when it gets posted on the district website and you see the the slides um in a format that you can read you will see the comparison as Mrs kid pointed out on each slide between last year 2023 this year 2024 you can um again we can have another conversation I thought she did a a very good job explaining that it is looked at in two ways year over-year and following the same students if after you look at it again you still have questions please you know where to find me you have my phone number my email we will be happy to review it with what what I would suggest I will send you my questions and I hope that we can address them at public hearings so that people in Wang can see openly what the where the questions are and and where we're going to go that's what I thank you and we did that this evening again we did the comparisons you asked we talked about the the scores we talked about where our areas of concern were I I believe we did that I will make sure that when I receive your questions if there's something that we missed that we will address that thank you thank you oh you have time it's a three three minutes okay Jessica Maddox 35 Crestwood Drive uh I've got two kids in third grade and I wanted to talk a little bit about I mean obviously we all know that we're wanting to improve academics I've got two kids in third grade that uh come home and are excited about what they're learning in math I've got luckily they were um given to really good teachers I mean most of the teachers in third grade are great so I'm impressed with their excitement to come home to learn to um practice um they use uh Prodigy to come home and do the extra fun stuff that all our little kids want do on uh computers you know everything's about computers everything's about AI everything's about technology and so I think that's the important piece is that you know in the future we need to prepare our kids for anything that is Technology based and it sounds like based on the presentations and what you have in store for us it sounds like a lot of that is being Incorporated um I'm excited about these changes that are coming um the most the biggest piece that I'm really excited about is the fact that the report cards are going to change because I didn't like the report cards honestly and um the reports report cards that we did just recently receive my kids did get I was pretty pleased with their performance and the feedback that was on them but obviously there can be a little bit of improvement so I'm happy to see that there's going to be some changes on that the other thing that I was really excited about uh was the bus route change thank you for working on that guys the it was last year was a complete mess um there was a lot of anticipation in regards to the bus routes and a lot of the how should I nicely say that just cluster um to put it in nice uh words and this year you know there's been a significant change there's been some bumps uh that was to be expected but overall it's been really good there was a little piece where we had my boys had to change buses and there was just you know anticipation of like no you know we don't want to change things we liked our bus driver it was great but honestly I'm so happy that that happened because now I don't have to go to parent pickup anymore uh my boys go to Ninja twice a week and so they actually get home a lot faster than what I would sitting in parent pickup so I don't have to deal with coming down the hill in traffic and then trying to get back up the hill my boys doing their homework so thank you for organizing that the only thing that I would ask is if you know such as something like today when they were 40 minutes I think it was about 40 45 minutes late um due to traffic not something that was a school but if there's some kind of uh you know just response to us a little bit earlier than the 40 minutes I tracked my kids so I knew that there was uh a delay and that they were still sitting at the school um I supposed to say that but I do track my kids because you know I was not happy with the bus last year um so that's what I do is I I track my kids to make sure that they're okay and they're going to get home at some point during the day um so I just I'm just excited that um it's better and just one little teeny tweak uh the other thing that I wanted to talk about was I think that's pretty much it but just those couple of things you know I um I like the the the direction that we're heading you know I think we all agree that academic needs to improve and and that's the goal is academics for all of our kids and and I'm excited about what we're looking at you know the biggest thing is making sure that we stability within our school system stability starts with the board obviously our superintendent and just making sure that we move forward and I'm glad that um you know we've got some really great goals and I'm looking forward to seeing those goals implemented thank you thank you thank you good evening Adam craft uh Valley Road I too am a long-term resident if that in case that matters um the interesting thing about data is it can be interpreted many different ways when I was paying attention to the presentation I saw that over 90% of students are either approaching or at or have exceeded expect expectations I find that to be very good I have two children three children two in Bayberry one in Valley View so I understand that approaching grade level is okay especially this early in the grade year um so that 90% to me looked really good especially when you then also compare our numbers Statewide which a lot of people like to do and we ex we were beating all of the state averages so there is there are positives there if you look for them not saying everything is positive but again data can be interpreted many different ways which is one of the main reasons I don't I understand why test scores are used to measure achievement it's it's easy to point to it's a number it's publicly available it's right there it's firm data but it doesn't tell the whole story of what goes on inside of these schools what the children are experiencing all the things that do matter to make these children productive successful human beings grown-ups right um math and reading important not the only things that are important social and emotional learning very important there's no njsla test for that um my experiences for the past now six years five plus years have been extremely positive the teachers in these schools are unbelievable they work their butts off they come in with a smile they have tremendous energy these kids love going to school maybe not every day who loves going to school every day who loves going to work every day um but they come home Happy enthusiastic my kids get right down and do their work um I see progress month over month year over year to me progress is as important as anything so you look at scores and points made how do we do last year compared to this year that was up there we showed percentages based on the grade level from last year grade four last year is grade five this year so that was up there and progress is continuing to be made so lots of positives and then we talk about continuing to improve I agree I think we're on a a good trajectory we all want to continue that trajectory and I think we've I think we all agree investment is required so when I read things and I hear things that people are complaining about this tax levy I question it because it seems like we're on the same page until it comes to money where we're the fifth we spend the fifth lowest amount of money per pupil in the county and we have the fifth lowest tax rate in the county we're not investing that much money for our children we couldn't be in we could be investing so much more so thank you to the board to the administration and the board for seeing that and doing something about that I think that is putting us on a great path I think what Jennifer said about the director of curriculum is so important and now hopefully we have money for it and all these other great things so thank you and please continue working hard appreciate it okay thank you all for your comments now we're going to move on to Executive session um whereas the open public meetings act and JSA 10411 permits the Board of Education to meet in close session to yes Mrs Santos Dr Francisco are absent motions pass okay policy Daniel I move um policies for first reading um P 3261 p42 PNR 7510 and p54 5440 um and there are no policies for second reading so second okay any discussion I just had a question with the abolishing of policy 5440 honoring student achievement I I did see in the minutes that it short explanation that it no longer uh applies some way it's quoting exactly but it's a short policy it's just one page and uh seems to focus on academic recognition athletic participation and service participation so I thought is there no replacement rather than just abolishing so it's not a mandatory policy and um from the administrators reading it we don't we don't have an athletic director our Athletic program doesn't fall under um the NJ siia obviously because it's Middle School we don't rank students by their academics we we provide other kinds of recognition this is really geared towards they felt more towards a high school level than what we're doing here K to8 all right I'm just reading the academic recognition says uh grades 5 through eight to have an honor role well that's what we that is why we review the policy it's out of date that that was what they did don't so there's no more honorable recognition they have not um they recognize students in different ways is what don't use an honor own they don't do that not titled that what caring kids told we don't we don't honor uh we do honor we don't rank okay all right the other one was for many hours students who give many hours of their time to represent the school in inters Scholastic Athletics and uh that would be decided if not the athletic director it says the principal after the athletic director we're coaches we don't participate in that way ours are again that's geared more towards the high school so our students are not you know if they like last year baseball right made it to the finals if they had won the finals they they would receive that recognition but we don't have a letter program we don't have it's not geared towards us all right the last one service participation seems like kind of right we have the our clubs um where we do that we have the Community Days of service we have a lot of opportunities and they felt that again the students that participate are honored but we don't other than at graduation the the I remember how many it is now four six honors um that are voted right by the peers and the teachers they don't recognize in a in that way all right I guess my comment is just I think it would be nice if we could find a way to keep honoring student achievement well I think we do without not that way you know maybe just changing it tor does this go for another read like do we talk about this one more time or is this last well no you got a whole month yeah I mean we can talk about it again in policy if there's any concerns any any person can contact any of us and we can discuss it again it's fine because it it goes for a second reading okay so we can still talk about oh yeah that's good so phis in the committee when we say right you know did anybody get any feedback was there that's yeah I thought of it mostly as an not an academic but an athletic we don't have like you said the letter we don't have yeah we don't have that that's what I was saying our structure isn't big enough but it looks it doesn't look nice when you say honoring student achievement we're abolishing that but I don't I don't have the control over the title of the policy which is great that you guys asked questions so now everybody knows okay so we'll talk about it no longer with us we okay um so we did a roll call we did this who did it second M uh Dory Harvey okay so roll call please okay Mrs AG Aro yes yes Mr fras yes Mrs Amadeo yes Mrs Harvey yes Mr Ang Gracia um I'm a no on the uh just out of the four listed I'm a no on p5440 abolishing honoring student achievement got it which will lead us to further discussion just so everybody okay and Mrs jet yes I'll do the same I want to hold off on the uh e5440 till we discuss it again okay Mr Gonzalez as sad as I am to see a go I am a yes okay and Mrs Santos and Dr vinc Kua are absent the motion passes and again just to clarify even though the motion passes you still have this whole month for discussion before a second okay moving on to board business I I don't have any board business but I was just going to say if there's any specific questions about that policy if everyone can please email them ahead of time so that we can have the principal's comment on it because they're the ones who are kind of of stating whether or not we need that policy based on what they do in both schools so if you have any specific questions please send it to us ahead of time so that we can get the principles to comment I'd appreciate it um I there were because our meeting was so long last time there were people who who left that didn't get to comment and I and I received feedback positive feedback about all the busing changes that I just wanted to say I'm hearing good things from from the community about all the the positive changes in busing and I know there's still a few issu issues left to resolve I'm glad we're working through those um uh and I'm really hopeful that we can take uh the learnings that we've had this year and Implement them in advance next time and we have a person in advance I hope right so that helps to no okay no other board business no okay um I have a statement to make um good evening all I'm making a short statement on behalf of the board related to our decision to hire a special councel and to oppose a petition filed by board member Mr necia against the board we will not be answering questions at this time several months ago the board undertook a process to fill a vacancy On The Board of Education in furtherance of that goal we received applicants reviewed material and eventually appointed a new member this was done in consultation with legal counsel and with the administration board member anag graio in apparent dissatisfaction with board process filed an action against the board the commissioner of Education in filing this league in action board member in necia took position adverse to the board and to our staff out side of several narrow exemptions which do not apply here it is the board's position that this is impers board member in agcia takes a position that the board should have filed the board vacancy differently he has a process which he believes would have been more efficient this perspective while valid fa failed to Garner the support of the majority of the board this is after all is a democracy as a board member one of the responsibilities is to voice your concerns another is to support the board once the majority has made a decision to move forward in a certain direction opposing board members in a graia suit which has potential to impact not just the board but boards throughout New Jersey is imperative additionally while reviewing his complaint the board discovered several potential violations of the school ethics act these violations have been referred to to the school ethics commission consistent with applicable law as the board noted in the resolution it passed he entitled Tod do process with regards to this referral the appropriate entity charged with determined board member adherence to Statue School ethics act will make the ultimate decision We Believe fully in the appropriate course of action in this case board members have the freedom to Advocate and question in furtherance of their duties however once the board has adopted a course of action continued attempts to determine the board is not helpful nor is necessary in the fact in in fact it can be detrimental to the board and to aim of the district's hardworking staff and ultimately to our school district community and our students each of us has a responsibility to enact the plan or action approved by the majority of the board anyone who is unable to do that will find difficult to work as part of this or any board to contribute to this or any democracy all right well I'd like to make a statement that I completely disagree with what you're saying I think there's uh errors in fact and in your judgment and you've done a very poor job throughout this process with uh continuing to make these public statements that are not true so uh again I don't know what council you're getting but I think it's bad and I think that uh your judgment is very poor thank you well this is my first comment that I've made publicly um you've read a resolution twice uh I think that I will be Vindicated in that uh uh in that process I disagree with how you are uh describing my actions in your statement um and I think you intentionally lie I think that you do so um I'm sorry I've tried to help you through your leadership mot to uh you've come out publicly basically saying that you've brought these ethics charges to silence me and to have me stop asking questions it's on video so the both of you are very unfortunately uh toxic combination for our board leadership and I'll leave it at that but uh I disagree with your statements completely uh the the suit that we received honestly is just frivilous not a suit that's a first misstatement of fact it's a judgment to apolog through the proper channels which by the way the ngba guided me through so I didn't go and do something just out of my own improper actions I followed the guidelines for how to solve a legitimate dispute between board members you did not follow so you continue to yes I which is why we have the ability to file an Ethics complete look like I said I'm I'm willing to put some of this on on bad counsel but it's also uh bad uh bad judgment and a lack of integrity at this point I just want to thank everyone for saying what they want to say and we can all agree to disagree and maybe we should move on I haven't been making three two resolutions and public statements directed at them so at this point I think um I have the right to respond and say that I completely disagree I didn't characterized I didn't say that you couldn't I thanked you for your comments thank you this all could have been avoided too i' like to say that too if you hadn't completely denied a board member his rights and the board our rights to do things you know can I just ask way that was point of order that we move on please we're going to move on another comment from uh uh so now we're going to move move on to comments from the public seeing that there is no uh public members here uh may I have a motion to join so moved second okay any further discussion no okay this meeting is adjourned all in favor all in favor I [Music] I e for
