that you brought up you know our team's had a great season this year so um it was great to see them play um and our Veterans Day ceremonies were also great to be attendance at the both the middle school and the MERS ceremonies and they did a great job so I'm thank you for all the students and staff that help put that together for our thank you both very much thank you thank you King Brothers have a good day have a nice Thanksgiving you too too abely representative Schmid if you would if you wouldn't mind could you join us at the uh the table over here thank you thank you very much uh so next on our agenda we will be recognizing uh state representative Paul Schmid who has served the town of Westport and the eth Bristal District since 2010 in the state house um he will be retiring uh he decided not to seek reection this cycle so in January his term will expire um so we wanted to recognize for both his service of the district in our town and for his advocacy and support for our schools over the years uh just to give a few examples here so since fy22 representative Schmidt has helped secure $660,000 in support for our school district in fy22 he supported an earmark that uh supported $150,000 installation of heating and air air condition ventilation units at the macomer school and FY 23 $410,000 in zspace computers and software at the middle high school and an fy4 ,000 HVAC and AC um Minit Min split project at the ma school um and I've had the privilege of working with representative Schmid on the elementary school school council as well um and on a personal note also you know representative SCH and I sought the same seat in a couple of election cycles and I certainly appreciate your willingness to work with me um on advocacy for this district and your support um and commitment to our and strengthen our community so I want to thank you for that um are there any comments from the committee say thank you for everything you've done and you know we've done at different levels here at the college and the high school and the town level so thank you so I'd just like to say uh thank you for all that you've done um one of the things that I I think is really important is you've made me feel personally comfortable in just talking to you you you were someone who is just willing to have a conversation when I first uh ran for school committee you spoke to me about it and offered some words of wisdom which were uh incredibly helpful um I mean more than I can say and just uh modeling the behavior that you do um inspires me and inspires others so I am very grateful for all that you've done for our community for other communities and and for myself so thank thank you sincerely thank you thank you for everything you've done obviously for our uh for our town our students and our school district truly appreciate it if I may say we also have a a great team in representative Schmid and Senator Rodricks who we also the district also has open communication with so again just on the communication front I know you've always been accessible to both myself and the superintendent and others here so want to thank you for that yeah if I may you know again uh it's exactly what you're speaking about uh chair jendro was the fact that uh there wasn't a time I didn't email or call uh representative Schmid and he didn't get back to us and I I think that is a a real credit considering how busy you you people are I mean driving up to Boston and you know in the traffic and all that and we really appreciate uh your continued support of of our mission and I I just I'm going to miss you I'm not going to I'm going to miss you I have something to say too so um lucky enough uh West we've been very fortunate that um Paul has been like such a supporter of our formed school program here in Westport um from right from the day one he came would text me and say what do you need from me what is it that I can do for you he always shows up he always attends I mean you'll see him with his boots on every place he goes whether he just came from taking care of his cows or wherever he is he always shows up you know Boy Scout breakfast is um you name it Paul's always there so I think think unfortunately funerals all of that you see Paul every place we go and so I think as far as not even just being for the town but I think as a family man a community a member of this community and just you're like one of us you know so it's it's I think it's important that someone like you you know Blends in with all of us but yet you high you have such this High role with us so you know we appreciate everything you've done I appreciate everything that you've done and just getting you know knowing you I have you text still so I can still reach out Michelle just to ech that I was remiss in not mentioning from the school which has been a real winner for the district I think our lunch program has received a number of compliments both in the community and from other districts so appreciate work on that represent Schmid is like to say thank you very much chair General committee members Tom Michelle uh it has been a it has been a very great honor to serve Westport for the past 14 years I know I'm going to wake up on ju on January 1 and say damn that was a bad [Laughter] idea and it's been particularly an honor to work for schools because as I've often said what's more important and I'm delighted that I was able to work with Senator Rodricks and obtain the funds for this new building and it's wonderful how you maintain it thank you very much to all the folks who work hard to keeping clean work that I've done is really nothing compared to what you superintendent Michelle team the committee have uh done for our schools for our kids and it's really remarkable uh the progress uh that you have made and I know that you will continue to make that progress and continue to make all of us uh feel so proud of our Westport schools and I'm just going to put in a little plug uh for Michelle uh because uh as chair of the committee on agriculture uh it's sort of my responsibility to speak up uh for our farming and fishing families all around the uh State and can't tell you what a difference it makes uh for our farming community here in Westport and all around to have their local institutions uh supporting uh what they do so thank you for the effort that you all put into everything and most particularly to providing local healthy food to our kids so I reflect your comments right back at you and say thank you very much uh to the leadership and to every teacher and administrator and staff member who's been part of this very great success story thank you so much on beh of the committee we would like to present you with a token of our oh my good we'll just go over to the front fine I'll follow you the committee would like to for picture accept it with gratitude treasure this the good work all should do one of them oh no you did not you we're going to miss you sir but you're not going to go away you're still here still here he's going nowhere we're going to keep pushing and one of these days we'll increase the uh reimbursement rate for special ed kids and all the other things that are so slow coming but we keep pushing for thank you so much um Paul we will have some uh openings on the school committee if January comes and you like I really miss it he speechless you know my wife get might get very cross then just kidding thank you again thank you so muchly forward to Contin to work with the delegation to provide support for our students and families and our town absolutely all right if the committee is agreeable also I see and take item G out of order thank you very much uh for joining us and I apologize I was hoping to make it to a meeting prior to coming here but I hope to make it to Future just to give a quick update before so I did speak with our Wendy Miranda here the district did apply forun um from the fluty foundation those are on a rolling basis so we should be by first good evening and thank you for allowing me this time to present to you from the Westport special education parent advisory Council and sharing what we have been working on um it's been over a year since I've been here so it's been um a busy year um for those who may not know I am Carrie marrow a mother to two students in the Westport schools and a former graduate of the Westbook Community Schools I am the chair of the growing CPAC organization along board members Rachel lambow Kate jendro and Tanya quinland we have several dedicated families that also attend our monthly meetings and offer their Helping Hands the CPAC is passionate about Westport developing a truly inclusive supportive and successful atmosphere for all the students this remained the focus of the pack organization while also providing resources and support to families so first I would like to thank the school committee for their support with getting westport's first United uh Unified sports team um um to the district as the magic was witnessed I'm sure on those front Fields I have to say the wild cats blew it out of the water with their first season and set the bar very high so thank you for all your support with that um hearing feedback from families of all the participants was great families of students with disabilities have shed many happy tears and emotions as they witnessed their children being accepted and participating in a sports team families have shared the importance and impact this team has had on their students being by their peers excitement and engagement in an activity and more importantly the proud smiles and thoughts that their child has shared or expressed for their accomplishments the impact on the students without disabilities um has also been great families with students who were unified Partners have shared equal gratitude for the team and the opportunities it has opened for their children being a leader on a team and finding a way to help and participate with all of your teammates is a true skill for Future Leaders and successes parents of uni Partners have expressed how this opportunity has created more compassion and understanding for their peers it has also helped um students find their passion and Spark some future career thoughts for exploration from some of the students getting Unified sports teams was a process and what I am glad the school Community has stuck with and seen through and will hopefully continue to grow and develop over the last year here are some other things the CAC has focused on we've partnered with PTO events to iations are available for all students to enjoy for example we had noise cancelling headphones at The Whiz Kids game um along with a CPAC information table we also had a sensory play adapted area at the mudrun to allow students of all abilities to participate in the well-known event in town um we've been meeting with the special education coordinators superintendent and school committee members to discuss topics brought for at our CPAC meetings we've taken on the process of becoming a nonprofit and as of last month we are officially accepted as a nonprofit ation um we have worked with school leadership and school committee to bring Unified sports and activities to the district um we have funded some programs in the Westport community and schools including the unified Bachi team nursing staff for the West UniFi track and field activities and startup supplies for the cafe at the Westport HIgh School um we've continued to meet monthly throughout the school year and provided trainings for families about the IEP process we've partnered with the special education coordinators to assist with their review from desie last year we've partnered with the special Edge coordinators to provide support and training to families as a state transition to the new IEP this year we've had information tables at all open houses and some goals for this next year um we're hoping to help continue to grow the Unified sports and activities at the schools to Future seasons in more schools we are hoping to find a way to work with leadership and the school committee to get our youngest wild cats part of this program inclusion is taught through how it is modeled and the importance that the school Community puts on it finding a way to help Foster this model from such a young age is key and will feed all programs in the future continuing we're hoping to continue our partnership with the special education coordinators superintendent and the school committee members and we continue to hope to provide training that is Meaningful to our families on topics of their interest so as I say at every CPAC meeting I have big goals and sometimes I need to be taken down but they are important for so many families and students in the Westport schools that we all continue to work together to accomplish them I appreciate this opportunity to share with the CPAC uh share what the CPAC has been doing along with a chance to collaborate with the school committee and hear some of your Visions or areas that CAC could assist the westbr Community Schools thank you Youk you just want to thank you for your advocacy you know it's great to see the CPAC grow andure attending games and it was great to see that and so than just I have to say the bot uh tend to the second game uh didn't make any time it came up there right as the first one was ending but the second game uh the atmosphere was fantastic between the pep pan being involved and the parents and uh many staff members coming out to to watch it as well it was it was just was a great certainly a great thing and I'm very happy to hear that uh the whole whole thing has has gone uh Gone smoothly and also as you saw as you say definitely has put a high bar up for for going forward that and that is and and I just I want to thank you the committee as well but uh but the CPAC or the CPAC committee as well but but you especially for the work you've done to make this that it's really cool it's really cool to see and uh to be a part of and I've had a opportunity to attend a couple meetings now and uh it's the the level of Engagement is is wonderful to see it's something that's that's always needed I'm looking forward to to seeing what what comes next as far as uh any additional Unified sports down the road or uh we we'll see but I again just thank you for all your efforts it's it's wonderful he's come a long way it has it's been a process but it's been a rewarding one so I thank you guys for the support in that thank you for your effort than just yeah looking forward to to work together um and for the public also for a to get involv for commit also when is the next meeting so we meet the second Thursday of every month at the West Library so I believe it's the 12th of December if I'm remembering correctly but maybe a calendar could help us with that yep well um yeah so we meet at the westw public library um starting at 6:30 on the second Thursdays of every month and and one more important question do you have enough volunteers for the pies so we sorted those yesterday we sorted almost um 1,50 pies um and we did it in under 45 minutes with all of our help I'm impressed um we had no major issues except once we sorted everything there were 15 Paces of pie still sitting on the wall so we were a little unsure but thankfully it was just an era in the shipment to us and not an era on our part so I think it went very well and that definitely has helped um us be ready to help fund some more inclusive activities this year so so do you have extra pies you're selling um I believe Tanya has a few so who should people reach out to few extra if people are interested in pies should they reach out to anybody can send an email to the Westport CPAC email address and we do have some okay but not 15 cases thankfully we return those for to back meeting inure app all right thank you thank you very much Happy thanks item super sure uh good evening um on November the 6 the uh Department of Elementary and secondary education uh put out a FAQ in regards to uh question two that was on the ballot and uh the impact that will have going forward um on on mcast testing and any of the uh um laws pertaining to mcast so uh I just wanted to share with the committee a couple of I think Salient points uh the new law which will take effect uh the earliest that will take effect is December the 5th now uh we had scheduled mcast test well not we had we scheduled mcast tests in English language arts and Mathematics uh for makeups and we had uh those students take them because you know based on the the unknown here we didn't want to put the kids in a position not to have that test retake so you know not knowing where the state was going with this uh they did take the math and the English language art so that's taken care of um students will still need a competency determination and uh that has not gone away but the difference is that the competency determination will not only will not be based on both the qualifying scores of mcast in science math and English but it will and the local requirements but now it'll be the local requirements that will drive the acquisition of a of a diploma uh for those who achieved uh uh a competency D or passed the mcast for you know brevity sake um nothing has changed they as long as they take care of their local requirements they will get their diploma that's relatively self-explanatory however uh the students who have not earned their uh competency determination uh based on the law that was passed on uh at the election uh those students will have to satisfactorily complete a cost workor the local cost workor but it will not obviously be impacted by uh the mcast at this point starts that'll be for this com the earliest will be December 5th but once that law goes into effect it is my understanding that students who did not um meet the the criteria score for a competency determination based on the mcast will still be able to get a diploma as long as they take care of their local requirements um I will also add to that that I will be meeting with the superintendent all Colony superintendent on Thursday and having spoken to a superintendent uh this week there still is a little bit of uh confusion about what's going to happen so I think it is going to be a very hot topic coming up um I had uh Miss melow Mrs Melo and myself uh attended the uh the commissioner uh call which was I believe last week um not not any more than what I've provided for you today so as things develop I will continue to let you know uh with that in mind I I do want to make it clear to the people in Westport about that we are committed to accountability uh in terms of both students and staff uh and and performance so we have already working towards um the benchmarks uh that we think will move the needle we are mildly concerned for some of us old time is who were here uh back when the mcast test was not a high stakes test there was some struggle getting students to perform the way we would want them to perform on that so we know that we're we're we're marching into Uncharted Territory Char and uh we will continue to Advocate uh for what's best for the district and our community two quick questions which I understand the answers may not be forthcoming yet just because we don't know right but um so you said there was retake there were retakes in November in November so theoretically if those scores come back and anyone who has not yet been determined to reach the level of Competency if they have pass those will that count if that if they passed it or they didn't pass it once the law comes into effect it is the local requirements that will drive the acquisition so even so in theory even if they passed it it might not right if they don't if they don't satisfy the local requirements to uh again these are these are uh these are going to be questions that have to be resolved going forward I think I think the department and I'm not being critical of them all this is you know once you get um you know legislation by Fiat uh it becomes very challenging in terms of controlling all of the laws of unintended consequences that go with that so this is going to be really uh uh uh something that we're going to have to keep an eye on that free college education that's most a lot of us into I mean free community college so that will be help in that way it will however there are limits to the income requirements to access that I believe and I think that could be a challenge as well because I know I believe the for UMass I believe it's 75,000 if I'm not mistaken as a household income right so we're not gonna probably have a ton of students but hey look some is better than none it's it's progress and we'll we'll we'll recognize that um all uh of the local requirements could be for graduation could be found on the handful right they're in the handbook all of the requirements and again we follow Mass Common Core so uh you know that's not going to change at this point thank you very much thousand one more questions as they're coming as things and and I will tell you that as as developments take place I'll do my best to uh keep the committee uh in the loop because there this is going to be a very complex um happening for lack of a better thank you meeting of the audit committee on October 28th that I attended there was discussion around the certified number which came in. million there was also discussion around the new legislation for tax title forclosure auctions the fy4 audit which is planned to by the end of the year um the town also signed a threeyear engagement with the auditor and the next feu the longterm building committee has a meeting tomorrow uh the 20th at 5: PM in town hall and the school building committee is meeting on 21st which was which is Thursday at 7M midd High schol uh so I have no reports from any of the Committees where I'm a leaz on I would add about the long-term building committee uh the the meeting will be to interview to uh Aral firms that responded to the RFP uh for evaluating municipal buildings uh so the good news is that that does seem to be PR progressing quick enough so we should have some some interesting should news to report after this meeting but other than that no reports from never had a committee contact me yet so there's no reports so um the cipc is say that okay um reached out or they sent a message to me indicating that they're meeting this Thursday at I want to say 7 o'clock no I don't know why I said 7 I think at 4m. um the problem is um I can't attend I'm I'm not going to be able to and Thursdays is a really bad day for me um they kind of set the meeting um and just like let the members know I mean maybe they talked about it amongst themselves but they just kind of sent the notification to me which unfortunately that's a really bad day for me so I mentioned this um to Evan and I think it might better to have another member of the school committee beyond the committee um because I think it's imperative that we have a member of the school committee there and I don't wanna not I don't want us not to be represented because I can't attend the meeting so I wanted to bring it to the committee to see if anybody is interested in being on the committee I would be happy to do like a a joint representative if um if possible um if if needed you know so I wanted to kind of mention that I um because I think it falls under committee liaison reports um and mention it to the chair and see what the rest of the committee thinks if someone's interested in being on that or so process wise I think because it's it's a town committee to select board I believe have to V on any that's being added in addition to our to a vot of the school so they would have so when we appointed me did they vote on it they typically do yeah they vote on all of the if you're if we're serving on as aison to a town committee the select board votes in June or July on usually a long of names okay so then how do we want to proceed moving forward what what do we want to do do we want to um remove me from the committee do we want to for this week I planned on attending anyway just as a obviously as a member of public I can I wouldn't be a voting member if I were there I can certainly speak to thee during their comment section but would have a v so um I did send an email and um they did say that they would that it was okay to not be at this meeting but I'm concerned with the fact that of what the agenda is because you had sent that um the agenda does include School post and they could I mean they could skip over it and resched a date so I'm not sure if they get reached out to to do that so here's typically what happens in in the meetings is um each of the different town departments come in and they talk about what their needs are and then um you know the committee itself talks about it and asks questions and then they they don't decide then and there like what they're going to fund but they kind of like typically you know I mean I don't know maybe it'll be different process this year but typically then you know they kind of begin to identify what's going to be funed or what they're going to bring forth to be funded so um yeah so is there anybody on the committee who would be interested in being on the cpic I would be I'm not I would be willing to do we can't take action tonight right right but no no I'm just I would certainly be willing just we just can't action okay yeah I just want to gauge from everybody because my thoughts are is I'll also email the committee again and say that um if that's going to be the case then I need to I might have to we might have to switch people yeah they can if they can schedule something even if it's a it's not so it's not even just about the school department though so while I get that it's important for me to be on to hear about the school department my role in the committee is is is townwide do you know what I mean like so I don't know I I I take it as yes the school is important but I also it's also important to hear what the other departments have to say I'm kind of sad that I'm not going to be there on Thursday but I can't be right like what is what is their their their guidance for that because you mentioned that everybody can do Thursday but that's Thursdays and Fridays are just not always they're typically not good for me and especially at four I mean I I work full-time and so it's hard to can consistently get there for four o'clock thank you I haven't had any uh new meetings um since our last SCH Comm it St and studend reports I'll I'll just ask Mr superintendent um I I didn't see any particular concerning Trends is there anything that you guys were watching at this point no I'm not and uh I've been a little bit grateful because you know speaking of some of the health people you know some things are ticking up again RSV and other respiratory uh bonuses so no I mean you know and and again when you can see from the data when you when you pass out the long-term uh people with own this I think it's pretty impressive actually um since you've been doing this it's gotten better on attend now it's like accountability they can actually now it's apprciate well I mean everyone has a right to it and um and um you know the I I I keep reminding people that uh the dees part of their strategic uh goals is uh getting students into school um as as often as possible so you know is all part of of you know kids come to school when they buy into their teachers you know and if the teachers are here then that's more motivation for the kids to come in and so that's really important when we look at it so uh of course we get the holidays coming up I'm hoping that we can still remember that until we uh let go we have school and kids have a right to learn education so pretty consistent so credit to the staff I have I'm kind of curious um so I know there was a handing change regarding uh the length of time that would count for for a day to be able to participate in extra activities or Sports um just anally any any kind of push back or any issues that come from that or does it seem like that implementation is no I mean it's it's recognized um you know throughout other districts in order to participate you needs to be in school and again this is part of us trying to do everything we can to uh get and keep our kids in school because obviously um as a matter of fact at the deese hearing yesterday uh there was a uh superintendent from Vocational School said that you know if the kids aren't in they can't learn welding uh well they also can't learn physics and Cham and anything else for that matter so uh we believe that attendance is important everywhere not just it struck me as a very good change in the handook so I'm glad to hear that it's thank you it West commity schools Bill warrants dat 11124 226,000 22688 and3 sick of me asking about it but uh any resolution from the from the over Source situation that is still still Ono all right we are waiting just you know we is keeping an eye on yeah and we are in direct contact with the utility company to let them know I'll apologize in advance for asking about it please hey item H fund advisory committee so just to give the committee a quick update the first the organizational meeting of that committee will take place on December 10th select board approved or sh's appointment that position one of the recent meetings so she'll be representative and if I may she was sworn in so she's she was sworn in so she's good to go so item I memor of agreement with support Federation teachers um so tonight the committee approved an executive session two subject to a couple of amendments one is on sens for clubs and Athletics to our action agenda item a review and act on school committe special meeting oober 22nd 2024 and the school comme work session Tuesday October 22nd none in favor item on the grants from Westport education founds school math club8 J Westport Middle School drama club I make a motion to uh approve the grants from the West Education Foundation discussion i' just like to uh thank the West Education Foundation for all these tremendous grants that provide additional resources to our students we all we talked about the budget earlier um and the West Bo Education Foundation has been such an integral part of our our school district in funding these really great programs so just thank you thank you to the supp item C review and act on the revised 2024 2025 school year calendar so I believe this adjust the senior dat you are correct it does it moves it up a little bit and uh it does um still um aligned with the law saying that uh students have to be in school 12 days fire the graduation so uh fette uh double check that I trust their math and uh so that it will also you know again allow our seniors to to start their life after after Westport which you know it's very competitive out there and uh there a lot to do and I think uh for those of you who have had children going to college or starting work you know what I'm talking about so I think it's a win-win if we make a motion to approve the school committee calendar do have a brief discussion item so I just want to clarify uh the approval of this calendar uh does this calendar could still be amended going forward is that correct um yeah all it would take as a good stor uh well of course and it will or my very specific uh there has been talk continued talk about consolidating the voting precincts in Westport to a single location and there has been talk about utilizing uh the school facilities here uh for that U combined Precinct and I know that logistically speaking it it would necessitate that it either be a a school day or a no school day or a professional day perhaps just just from shering logistic so um looking at probably I believe it's the second is it second Tuesday in April or third second or third Tuesday in April was it second didn't we look at that was second it may well be it may well April 1 it was fell on APR because it's the first because the first Tuesday so it would be the first this year so basically with with the caveat I'm certainly going to to approve this as as is right now but if the the town clerk to want to uh to move to consolidate those precincts in time for the town election that's something we that could be addressed yeah we've we've we've talked about that we've met about that we look it if it saves a ton money and creates efficiencies we're all for it um it was a few years back where we realized that's really not a good idea to have school when there's voting going on and so we always schedule professional development on that day so uh so it would not it would not beue to adjust that should should the request come decent easy for me to say but no it wouldn't be a problem okay EXC if it does come to that though can we have a discussion about it because I have some thoughts about about that but it's not i i k side I I don't I don't think it's going to be an issue right we're we're you know one of the things that I'm very proud of uh is when we've had to you know for of a better term shuck and Jive uh we've done it very uh well and that's a real credit to and and I'll I'll call that out um Mrs wette who handles all of the uh outside uh um she's the of everything outside and she's done a spectacular job with it so you agree with that Mich agree thank
