- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Pasack Valley School Board delved into a variety of issues, including the potential acquisition of property adjacent to Hills High School, safety and Wi-Fi connectivity improvements, and the condition of the girls’ locker room. Additionally, the board discussed funding for extracurricular activities, such as the girls dance team, and recognized the achievements of athletic teams.
A development was the board’s approval of the acquisition of property next to Hills High School. While not an immediate priority, this move was deemed essential for future space and potential developments. The board also engaged in discussions about prioritizing auditorium renovations and the need for abatement at the Hills Auditorium, estimated to cost around $700,000.
Safety at the school was a concern. Superintendent Sarah Bilotti and board member Michael Weaver emphasized the need for proactive and aggressive outreach to town and county entities to ensure all safety concerns are addressed. The board considered the installation of a cell tower near the public golf course to address limited cell service and discussed potential federal funding. The possibility of a joint meeting with local townships was floated to find a comprehensive solution to the long-standing connectivity issues.
In line with safety improvements, the board examined Wi-Fi connectivity at the school, especially during events where the community is on campus. The possibility of providing Wi-Fi access to the community was proposed, particularly during sports events and tournaments. Concerns were raised over the Wi-Fi network’s limitations and the implications for visitors’ access to emergency services, highlighting the potential liability for the school.
The board also revisited the status of the girls’ locker room renovations. The costs, initially anticipated between three and a half to six million dollars, were discussed, with a consensus that current quotes were unexpectedly high. The board suggested a strategy to save for a more comprehensive renovation in the future, underlining the importance of long-term planning for facility-related needs.
Funding for extracurricular activities was scrutinized, with a particular focus on the girls dance team. The board had previously requested a report on out-of-pocket expenses for these activities, but a follow-up had not occurred. Discussions arose about how funds from ticket sales for various events were allocated among different programs and the equitable distribution of resources.
The board’s attendance and active participation were acknowledged positively, with a playful note on a member’s upcoming absence. The efforts of custodians and security personnel in managing school entrance traffic and safety were recognized. The Pasack Valley girls’ basketball team was commended for their charitable events and fundraising efforts, with Coach Jasper’s leadership being specifically mentioned.
In lighter news, the board celebrated the PV dance team’s participation in Nationals in Florida and the PV cheer program’s advancement to a major competition, extending well wishes to both teams.
