- Meeting Overview:
The Hammonton School Board recently convened to recognize exceptional achievements within the district, from the athletic triumphs of the high school field hockey team to the dedication of its educators, as exemplified by the Teachers of the Year awards. Amidst these celebrations, the Board was presented with the 2022-2023 School District audit report, which revealed a solid financial standing with an unmodified opinion on the financial statements. Additionally, the Board discussed ongoing projects, such as the Early Childhood Center (ECC) construction, and addressed policy approvals and new hires, highlighting the district’s forward momentum in education and infrastructure.
The meeting kicked off with commendations for the 2023 High School field hockey team, which was celebrated for winning the Cape Atlantic League Championship and achieving a notable 3-0 record against Ocean City. Athletic Director Chris Sako, along with the coaches, introduced the team, praising their hard work and the success of the feeder program. The friendly rivalry between Board member Mickey Pullia and attorney William Donio about their knowledge of field hockey was mentioned, adding a lighter note to the proceedings.
Attention then shifted to the recognition of the Teachers of the Year, a prestigious accolade awarded to four teachers across the district. Each teacher was honored for their outstanding contributions and received a $500 grant for their classrooms from the Hammonton Education Foundation. The Foundation expressed gratitude for being part of the program, and the teachers shared thanks while emphasizing the importance of teamwork within the school community. Among the honored were Miss Shannon Almenta from the Early Childhood Education Center, praised by Dr. Tammy Leonard for her positive influence on the school climate, and Miss Kelly Adamucci from Warren E. Sooy Junior Elementary School, commended by Dr. Thomas Attanasi for her dedication to ESL instruction.
Melissa Bush, a 17-year veteran teacher at Hammonton Middle School, and Tracy Angelosi from Hammonton High School were also recognized as Teachers of the Year for their exceptional commitment and positive influences on students. Both teachers shared their passion for teaching and the impact it has had on their lives and careers.
The Board was privy to a presentation by a high school English teacher, who underscored her dedication to mentoring new teachers and connecting with teenage students. Her involvement in empowering young women through the Live to Beia Club and coaching the newly formed lacrosse team was highlighted, along with her role in the Hammonton Education Association and her efforts in grant writing for district events.
The financial health of the district was examined with the presentation of the 2022-2023 School District audit report by auditor Jerry Conedy. The audit also included a single audit for federal and state grant compliance, with no significant deficiencies or material weaknesses found. A minor issue related to the Food Service fund was noted, with the district already having a corrective action plan in place.
Updates on infrastructure projects were given, reporting that the ECC project was ahead of schedule, with exterior masonry complete and interior framing in progress. The resurfacing and repainting of the nearby water tower were also mentioned. A discussion on repairs needed for the turf field due to storm damage was included, along with policy approvals, new hires, and the ongoing efforts of parent support groups and committees.
The Board celebrated the success of various sports teams, including the high school wrestling team’s progress in the NJSIAA playoffs and the basketball team’s 10-game winning streak. The middle school was applauded for its variety show, and upcoming events like the second-grade Happy Hearts program and family reading night were announced.
The meeting concluded with public comments, including a thank you from Alicia Champion, newly hired as a special education teacher at Hamilton Middle School. The Board approved agenda items pertaining to finance, personnel, and miscellaneous matters before adjourning.
