- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Cherry Hill School Board meeting, discussions centered around the concepts of equity versus equality in education, the representation of Cherry Hill West in the board, and the characterization of the district’s diversity in media. The public commentary highlighted community concerns regarding the district’s direction in addressing systemic racism and the need for diverse representation on the school board.
A community member initiated the public comment segment by contrasting equity and equality, expressing concerns that a focus on equity could lead to a lack of critical thinking and diminish the pursuit of excellence among students. The speaker suggested that the district’s emphasis on cultural proficiency and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives could potentially detract from preparing students for future challenges, particularly in fields such as social media marketing and artificial intelligence.
Following this, another resident addressed an article published in the Philadelphia Inquirer regarding Cherry Hill’s mandate of a black history course. The speaker disagreed with the article’s description of Cherry Hill as a “predominantly white district,” suggesting that “integrated and diverse” would be a more accurate and positive representation. Concerns were also raised about the article’s implication of systemic racism and implicit bias among staff and students, calling for school administrators and the school board to challenge this portrayal.
A third speaker advocated for geographic and socioeconomic representation on the board, particularly from the western part of Cherry Hill. While acknowledging the quality of the candidates for a board vacancy, the commenter urged the board to consider representation from West Cherry Hill.
Superintendent Kwame Morton and the board members were present, with Adam Greenbaum seconding a motion to move the meeting into executive session to discuss a board vacancy. It was clarified during the meeting that three current board members reside on the west side of Cherry Hill, correcting a prior statement made during public comment.
