- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Bloomingdale Borough Council, community initiatives were advanced, including the application for the New Jersey D Green Acres Program Grant for Bo Pond Park and playground improvements and the introduction of an ordinance to align zoning code with three-bedroom housing standards. The council also honored military personnel for their service and discussed various community support efforts, such as flood relief and the Municipal Alliance grant.
The meeting began with a moment of recognition for three military servicemen: Private Robert, Sergeant, and Sergeant Geral of the United States Army and Marine Corps, respectively. Mayor John D’Amato expressed pride in honoring their service.
A significant portion of the meeting centered on the application for the New Jersey D Green Acres Program Grant, which if successful, will provide $750,000 towards the $1.2 million project budget for the redevelopment of Bo Pond Park. The council held a public hearing and reviewed the concept plan presented by Business Administrator Michael Sandmire, which includes features like musical instruments, swings, and ADA accessibility. Public support was evident through a previous survey, although concerns about safety features such as fencing and water park elements were raised. The council members sought details regarding the fence design and questioned the inclusion of shade structures to ensure the park’s safe and enjoyable use.
In an effort to strengthen community resilience, a local resident highlighted the need for support in flood-affected areas. She spoke about the damages and the ongoing insurance processes, urging further community involvement. The Fire Department’s plan to hold a fundraiser and the potential for physical labor and tool contributions to assist in recovery efforts were also discussed, emphasizing the community’s spirit of solidarity.
Financial matters were addressed with the clarification of the Municipal Alliance grant application amount, which was confirmed as $6,000, not $6 million. The grant is intended to support local initiatives, and this discussion was coupled with acknowledgments of various community events and services, including the Tri-Boro First Aid Squad’s Anniversary and activities at the Senior Center and library. The council reminded residents to sign up for the Rave mobile safety system and the Recycle Coach app to stay informed and engage in community recycling efforts.
The Recreation Committee’s efforts to advertise for summer employment opportunities and the promotion of programs such as pickleball, yoga, softball, and karate were acknowledged. Additionally, the council discussed the preschool program, the 3v3 basketball initiative, and the Easter egg hunt.
Infrastructure updates were a focal point, with council member Mike emphasizing the Rose Fund meeting progress and soliciting public input for future discussions. The completion of the Chestnut Street cleanout and the installation of a new electronic crosswalk sign were also addressed.
Legislative actions included the unanimous approval of consent agenda items such as professional service contracts and the introduction of an ordinance to amend the zoning code to meet three-bedroom housing standards. The public hearing and final adoption for this ordinance are scheduled for February 20th.
The council debated the use of an ice skating rink at Stone Park and considered finding a permanent location for the well-maintained rink. Additionally, the tennis court lighting schedule was discussed, with consideration given to extending light hours for winter evening play.
