- Meeting Overview:
The Clark School Board convened recently, with the presentation of the 2022-2023 school year audit taking center stage. Andrew Parenti, a partner at Lurch, Vincy, and Bliss, delivered the audit results, reporting an unmodified, or clean opinion. The district concluded the fiscal year with a fund balance of approximately $9.6 million, allocated across several reserves, including $2.2 million for the 2024-2025 budget and $4.2 million for the 2023-2024 school year. The audit also revealed a capital reserve of $924,000 and a maintenance reserve of $91,000, with an unassigned fund balance of $1.1 million. One recommendation was made regarding the timely deposit of program fees from the before and after school program.
In other developments, Superintendent Edward Grande reported on various educational initiatives, including the return of the Clark connects to the Past program and the implementation of kindergarten registration online. Grande also highlighted the Princeton Review SAT prep classes and the introduction of the Honors Academy at Arthur L. Johnson High School. Furthermore, Grande addressed the district’s obligations to report incidents of violence, vandalism, and other disciplinary matters, with a total of 11 cases at Arthur L. Johnson High School, one at Carl H. Kumpf Middle School, one at Frank K. Hehnly Elementary School, and two at Valley Road School for the period of September 1st through December 31st.
The meeting also touched on topics such as personnel adjustments, curriculum matters, board governance, and financial decisions. Among the motions carried were the approval of minutes from the previous meeting and the opening of the floor to the public for agenda items.
During the public comments section, a community member raised concerns about state legislation related to transgender students and the discretion given to school staff regarding the disclosure of gender-related discussions to parents.
