- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Gloucester Township School Board meeting, members discussed a range of topics with a focus on student safety and community involvement. The assembly highlighted the importance of Naloxone training for school staff, recognized student leadership, and engaged in debates on issues like sexting, vaping, and the expansion of school playgrounds.
The meeting’s most pressing topic involved the response to a student poisoning by Fentanyl, which led to a discussion about Naloxone training for the school district’s staff, including bus drivers. Superintendent John Bilodeau, initially hesitant about the training, expressed a shift in perspective and gratitude for the collaborative efforts with the Camden County government and the Department of Health, who provided support for the training. This initiative was underscored by the presence of Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, Carla Avalino, and John Pelan from the Camden County Department of Health, and trainer Jennifer Hicks. The training is a critical step in equipping staff with life-saving skills.
Supplementing the safety discussion, the Gloucester Township Police’s upcoming presentation on sexting and vaping captured the board’s attention. Superintendent Bilodeau and board members articulated the necessity for educating parents and students on the repercussions of inappropriate cell phone use. The presentation aims to address the broader implications of these actions on student welfare, particularly focusing on female students and the potential for long-term consequences.
The meeting also featured recognition of the star students from Union Valley and Aerial Elementary schools for their leadership and community service. Assistant Superintendent Mr. Tro introduced the students and staff, noting their contributions to various charitable endeavors, such as fundraisers and support projects for veterans and homeless shelters. This recognition not only celebrated individual student achievements but also highlighted the role of student councils in fostering citizenship, scholarship, leadership, human relations, and cultural values within the community.
Another subject of debate arose when concerns were voiced about the expansion of playgrounds at Glen Landing and Mullen schools. Questions were raised about the approval process and whether the expansions adhered to the state’s preschool program guidelines.
The board’s discussion extended to operational concerns, including the need for additional legal counsel due to conflicts of interest and the tabling of the board secretary’s cash summary report. Public comments brought up issues regarding the bill list, the reporting of shelter in place drills, and the absence of exit interviews for resigning staff. Questions about the approval of payment of bills and the necessity of attracting external services to the district were also raised.
Board members additionally explored the district’s approach to job postings for teaching positions after a community member highlighted the lack of visibility for Gloucester Township vacancies on NJ schools. This prompted a dialogue on the effectiveness of current job posting methods and the need to enhance the district’s ability to attract competent educators.
The transportation department received commendation for its role in supporting the Naloxone training initiative by equipping school bus drivers with overdose response kits. The meeting acknowledged the transportation supervisor and the support professional association president for their mobilization of staff and colleagues.
In a nod to the dedication of the School Board members, the meeting included recognition of their work during School Board Recognition Month. Superintendent Bilodeau offered thanks to the Board of Education for their 24-year commitment to advancing the district and improving communication.
Board member Mr. Pis acknowledged the Superintendent’s timely snow day decisions. Discussions on the school calendar and fair wages for support staff rounded out the session before the motion to adjourn was passed.
