- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Roselle Park Borough Council meeting, the council adopted several safety and infrastructure measures, including amendments to traffic ordinances and deliberations on pedestrian safety initiatives. The council also addressed ongoing community programs, honored Black History Month, and discussed collaborative efforts to improve public services and infrastructure.
A notable highlight of the meeting was the discussion around Resolution 52-24, which dealt with pedestrian safety along the Route 28 Corridor. Councilman Gregory Johnson voiced concerns about the effectiveness of Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacon systems, suggesting a more comprehensive approach, such as installing traffic lights or converting the corridor into a one-lane highway. His proposal initiated a debate, with fellow council members weighing in on the best solutions to ensure public safety.
The council’s focus on safety extended to local infrastructure, with updates on the Fernow and Hunter construction projects and the status of a building on Dalton Street. The engineer discussed 2024 initiatives regarding traffic and pedestrian safety, including potential speed HPS on West Kfax and improvements at multiple intersections. Additionally, the implementation of rain gardens to tackle drainage issues and updates on the stormwater separation project with Elizabeth were addressed. Kevin Boyce, the town’s engineer, mentioned a closed session to delve deeper into the latter project.
The success of the basketball program, with 12 teams participating in 52 scheduled games, and the achievements of the girls’ wrestling teams were also featured.
In remembrance of local public service members, the council paused to honor a firefighter who had passed away and expressed gratitude for Union County Hazmat’s assistance during a recent lithium-ion battery fire incident. The fire chief stressed the importance of following manufacturer guidelines for handling such batteries, and the police chief discussed response protocols and plans to increase traffic enforcement.
Updates from the Department of Public Works included the street sweeper’s return to daily routes, tree maintenance activities, and winter weather responses. Mayor Signorello III inquired about trash receptacle maintenance, emphasizing the need for efficient trash removal.
Councilman Jay Robaina and Councilman Joseph E. Petrosky provided updates on their respective committee work and community involvement, including infrastructure projects and support for local businesses. Councilman Johnson reiterated the importance of recognizing Black History Month and advocating for safe routes to schools.
