- Meeting Overview:
In a recent session, Frankford School Board has unanimously approved the hiring of Kevin Newman as the new Chief School Administrator and Elementary School Principal for a five-year term commencing July 1st, 2024. The recent meeting also delved into the district’s pressing educational challenges, including the need to improve state assessment scores and address operational hurdles such as the scarcity of speech therapists and bus drivers.
The board expressed enthusiasm over Newman’s appointment. In response, Newman thanked the board and conveyed his readiness to take on the responsibilities of his new role, emphasizing his dedication to both student achievement and community engagement.
A comprehensive financial report was presented by auditor Richard Barr, which delineated the district’s fiscal standing, including cash holdings, reserve accounts, and liabilities.
Superintendent Robert Mooney addressed the concerning shortfall in the district’s state assessment scores, particularly within the Instruction and Programming category. He underscored the importance of aligning educational strategies with New Jersey learning standards and proposed measures for improvement. These included a review mechanism for past material and daily test format familiarization for students.
Mooney also reported on the anticipated rollout of new educational standards in September 2024 and the district’s adoption of the Benchmark program, Mobimax, and iel, aimed at individualized student progress assessment. Additionally, Dr. Milly, responsible for curriculum and instruction, teased the upcoming release of test items from the Njsla, which would further aid in aligning district curricula with state benchmarks.
In response to the current bus driver shortage, the board reviewed the school calendar for the upcoming year, contemplating adjustments to transportation logistics. Dates for upcoming events, such as the opening of the Parent Portal and the Valentine’s Day dance, were also announced.
The “One Book One Community” initiative was highlighted, with multiple districts participating and the chosen book for the year announced as “Love Z.” The related event, focusing on robotics and AI technology, promises to be a community engagement opportunity, featuring a robotics team from a local community college.
The board deliberated on the replacement of the B-wing roof, reviewing grant applications and the bid process. Superintendent Mooney provided updates on various district projects, including the triannual payroll verification, the application for the EPA clean bus rebate program, and the recent lockdown drill. He noted the district’s third attempt at securing funds to replace two school buses with electric alternatives, while voicing concerns about their efficacy in cold weather.
During the meeting, some board members expressed disagreement over certain cases in the harassment, intimidation, and bullying reports. The public comment period saw a parent commend Superintendent Mooney for his professional handling of a sensitive issue involving their child. The board reiterated the importance of confidentiality in the superintendent search process. Mooney also received praise for his effective communication during adverse weather conditions.
