- Meeting Overview:
The Glen Ridge School Board meeting highlighted the district’s focus on educational innovation and community engagement, with discussions on technology integration, environmental education, and community events. The centerpiece of the meeting was the presentation on the revitalization of the Stella Concade Bird Sanctuary and Learning Garden at Forest Avenue, emphasizing the combination of technology and nature in student learning. The board also addressed the upcoming superintendent interviews, recognition of student and teacher achievements, and the Glen Ridge Education Foundation’s contributions to school programs.
The plan is set to transform the space into a vibrant educational hub, incorporating native plants to support local wildlife, a new patio for outdoor classes, and bird feeders that will stream live footage into classrooms, allowing students to observe and study local bird species in real-time.
In addition to the environmental education initiative, the board also discussed the arrival of new touchscreen Chromebooks. The meeting also touched upon the removal of diseased oak trees. Celebrating school spirit and creativity, the board looked forward to the 100th day of school, which included a unique fashion show where students would dress up as centenarians.
The Glen Ridge Education Foundation’s contributions were acknowledged, with thanks given for funding the “Capturing Kids’ Hearts” program, which aims to foster social and emotional development in students. The Foundation also awarded two mini grants for additional educational programs.
The board’s engagement with the arts was also apparent. The Gas Lamp Players recently concluded their production of “The Sound of Music” and are preparing for upcoming children’s workshops and a summer Junior Camp featuring “Shrek the Musical.” The Glen Visual Arts program’s successful holiday market, designed to raise funds for art student scholarships, was also highlighted.
Concerning personnel matters, the board noted the successful musical production and the ongoing superintendent interviews without delving into specific candidate details. The central home and school association reported on their winter session Discovery program, a book fair, and a community service project aimed at supporting hospitalized children. An upcoming fundraiser, the SL Parents Night Out, promised to be a unique event, featuring parent performances at the Glen Ridge train station.
Updates from the Ridgewood Home and School Association included a range of school activities, such as a fifth-grade visit from The Write Stuff, auditions for the musical “Seussical,” and a legacy brick sale to leave a lasting mark on the school’s history. They also announced the Tre sign out, marketplace, book fair, and New Jersey Devils Night Out.
Routine proceedings were conducted with the approval of meeting minutes, personnel items, curricular items, and business-related discussions. The board expressed gratitude for donations received from the Glen Ridge Education Foundation and the Lyndon Avenue Home and School Association.
