- Meeting Overview:
The Union County Board of Commissioners’ recent meeting was marked by a focus on the Ashbrook Golf Course, with residents demanding action and transparency in the face of ongoing issues. Amidst the array of topics addressed, the public’s vocal concerns about the state of the golf course were met with assurances from County officials, including a promise of active efforts to resolve the problems. The meeting also saw the passage of various resolutions, announcements of community events, and acknowledgments of local achievements.
Residents took center stage during the public comment section, with multiple individuals voicing their frustration over the perceived neglect and lack of progress at the Ashbrook Golf Course. Bob Casone called for board members to personally inspect the deteriorating conditions, while Fran Wilson, a former government official, pressed for accountability given the financial investment in the facility. Chuck Snider joined in, echoing the demand for a concrete plan.
In response to the community outcry, County Engineer Ricardo Matias addressed the concerns, highlighting efforts to hire a firm and secure necessary permits from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
The ongoing challenges with the golf course, a valued community asset, had clearly touched a nerve among residents, who sought immediate and visible action to rectify the situation.
Moving beyond the Ashbrook Golf Course, the meeting progressed with the adoption of resolutions, including one to express sympathies for the late Angelina M. Wallp. The motion passed with unanimous support from the nine commissioners present.
The Commissioners’ reports provided a glimpse into the diverse activities and initiatives around the county. Commissioner Bette Jane Kowalski’s invitation to the Trailside Nature and Science Center’s February festivities, Commissioner James E. Baker, Jr.’s announcement of a Black History Month lunch and learn program, and Commissioner Rebecca L. Williams’s mention of the Harriet Tubman statue unveiling in Rahway highlighted cultural and educational events.
Commissioner Mirabella took a moment to directly address the concerns about the Ashbrook Golf Course. Although County Council member Bergen and County Manager Edward Oatman did not provide comments, Vice Chairwoman Lourdes M. Leon shared insights into her recent interview, the reopening of Hamilton Stage, and the car seat inspection program, further illustrating the board’s involvement in a wide range of county affairs.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn, which received unanimous approval. Commissioner Mirabella once again acknowledged the residents’ frustrations regarding the golf course, emphasizing the county’s active role in addressing the situation despite the procedural delays.
