- Meeting Overview:
The Union School Board convened to address a range of issues, including the approval of various resolutions, recognition of community members’ contributions, and discussions on enhancing resources for students. The meeting saw the board vote on reinstating and suspending students based on the superintendent’s recommendations and deliberate on harassment, intimidation, and bullying cases. There was acknowledgment of the efforts by Mela Whitman Land and John Boyd for their dedication to the school community. Superintendent Gerry Benaquista proposed recognizing Boards of Education every January. Furthermore, the meeting touched upon the need for remote meeting accessibility and providing resources for parents and students dealing with stress.
The board voted to move into executive session to deliberate on personnel, student, and legal issues. Upon reconvening, the board approved a settlement agreement and general release for parties identified only by initials. The board also discussed and approved the reinstatement of several students and the suspension of one student, all based on the recommendation of Superintendent Gerry Benaquista.
A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to the Superintendent’s report, which included recognition of Mela Whitman Land, a certified school psychologist at Union High School, and John Boyd, a volunteer coach for the Little League Challenger Division. Both individuals were commended for their exceptional service to the school community. In addition, Superintendent Benaquista acknowledged the school board members for their contributions, aligning with the proposal to designate January as Recognition Month for Boards of Education.
The board reviewed a detailed report on harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) cases, which provided a breakdown of founded, unfounded, and inconclusive cases. The report also outlined the interventions and support services provided to address these issues. The board affirmed the superintendent’s determination of one HIB case, rejected another for reinvestigation, and reaffirmed a third case. Additionally, the board discussed the multitude of anti-bullying programs and initiatives in place within the district, emphasizing the importance of assemblies, support groups, and the integration of social skills and mindfulness techniques in classrooms.
In a nod to health awareness, the Superintendent highlighted the upcoming participation in the American Heart Association’s “Go Red For Women” event, encouraging the community to wear red on February 2nd to raise awareness about cardiac health. Other community-driven initiatives discussed included a winter coat drive and a UHS fashion show.
Athletic achievements were not overlooked during the meeting as student liaisons provided updates on recent successes in wrestling, track, and bowling. They also recognized the athletes of the month.
The fiscal and planning committee presented resolutions F1 through F15, which were all approved following a roll call vote. The operations committee gained approval for resolutions concerning the use of Jefferson School by the township of Union and the Human Relations Committee for various events.
The personnel committee presented several resolutions, all of which were approved.
During the meeting, there was a discussion about the use of Zoom for board meetings, with some members seeking clarity on why Zoom was not an option for remote participation. Superintendent Benaquista explained the board’s current limitations in handling both in-person and remote meetings simultaneously but expressed hope for future improvements to accommodate broader community engagement.
The board also recognized the importance of providing resources for parents and students dealing with stress or difficult situations, especially after a recent tragedy in the community. Suggestions were made to make resources available online.
