- Meeting Overview:
New Milford Public Schools are set to heighten alumni engagement through an innovative digital platform named “Pulse,” as discussed in detail at the recent school board meeting. The platform is designed to foster a robust alumni community that contributes to the school’s development, offering mentorship and career guidance to current students. In addition to the “Pulse” presentation, the meeting covered several critical agenda items, including changes to the school calendar, the approval of various educational programs and staffing, and the remembrance of a former vice principal.
One item at the meeting was the presentation by Mr. Kod, who underscored the importance of alumni involvement in supporting the school, drawing parallels with the successful engagement strategies of private schools. The platform would also facilitate a Milford giving day and foster connections between alumni and current students for mentorship opportunities.
During the presentation, the potential for expanding the platform’s reach to include parents and community members as resources was also discussed. A board member inquired about the possibility of creating a specific page for parents and other adults to offer their support. Mr. Kod confirmed that community member involvement on the platform was envisioned.
Other topics at the meeting included the superintendent’s overview of the upcoming agenda. Notable changes to the school year calendar were discussed, such as the preference for faculty and staff to have the Monday before Christmas off, adjusting the observance of Rosh Hashanah, and designating June 3 as a half-day for professional development. Additionally, the agenda included the approval of the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority agreement, the appointment of a head football coach, the addition of a staff member for the spring musical, and the retirement of a staff member. Donations received for the theater department and senior class were acknowledged, and the New Jersey Learning Acceleration Program was reviewed.
The board also addressed the approval of the budget for the summer theater program and introduced flag football for girls as an intramural sport. A moment of remembrance was held for a former vice principal who had passed.
Further discussions included the educational trips organized by Miss Williams, which received praise for exposing students to various universities and educational opportunities. The board also approved funds for the high impact tutoring grant, which aims to assist students who have been impacted by remote learning. A report on the balanced budget mentioned the need for a new engine for one of the school buses. In addition, the necessity of a special meeting to award the contract for the high impact tutoring vendor was acknowledged.
The athletic committee and PR committee meetings were reported on, and Councilwoman Hy Grant’s inquiry regarding marker applications was addressed, with plans to resend necessary documents.
During the public session, a question about the origins of the newly appointed football coach arose. A board member responded with information regarding the coach’s past coaching positions. The meeting concluded with an executive session for discussions on student matters and personnel, with no action planned upon reconvening.
