- Meeting Overview:
The Washington Township Town Council recently convened to discuss a variety of issues, with the most pressing being the debate over the sale and use of a property initially designated as open space. The meeting saw residents and council members engage in A discussion about the land, which involved concerns over property encroachments, environmental impact, and the legal dispute regarding ownership.
Several residents spoke during the public comments section, expressing their frustration over the situation. Michael McClusky presented documents asserting that the area in question had been designated as open space for many years. Maria Harb and Joe Hay were among those who raised concerns about changes to the land and potential violations of zoning regulations. Hay emphasized the need for encroachments to be removed to comply with the law. The debate also touched on the impact of the open space on property values and neighborhood aesthetics, as well as the actions of a neighbor referred to as Martino, who was accused of making unauthorized alterations to the property.
The council discussed the complexities of the issue, including tax assignments and the potential implications for homeowners. They stressed the importance of transparency in the decision-making process and the necessity of legal compliance in resolving the dispute. The open space committee addressed their search for suitable reforestation areas and expressed concerns about the property being desecrated. The possibility of legal action was mentioned by a council member as a potential step to address the situation.
The meeting transitioned into an executive session to further deliberate on the issue of the property and open space, with a resolution to hold this session being passed. The council expected the executive session to last approximately an hour and anticipated that no action would be taken upon reconvening.
Another topic from the meeting was the council’s decision to change the appointment process for certain government positions, which drew criticism from residents for its perceived lack of transparency. John Coslo, a former public defender and prosecutor for the township, questioned the council’s authority to unilaterally take powers from the mayor and called for clarity in the decision-making process. Steve Aluro also voiced concerns about potential legal implications and conflicts of interest, particularly regarding the appointment of a solicitor associated with council members.
The department reported a rise in calls for service, police reports, and psychiatric emergencies. Officer Paul Kroer was honored as the 2023 Police Officer of the Year for his exemplary service.
Community contributions were also recognized, with Adele Ruff being honored for her 45 years of service and the Green Club at Hille Elementary School presenting their proposal to implement recycling in schools. Further, the Green Team at Perfect Elementary School discussed their initiatives to reduce single-use plastic water bottles and promote recycling, which the council commended and planned to visit.
Additionally, the council tackled routine business by reviewing and approving several resolutions, including tax overpayment refunds and canceling taxes for a disabled veteran. Appointments were made to the planning board, zoning board, and Municipal Utilities Authority.
Mayor Burns praised the response to recent severe weather and the public works department’s efforts, while encouraging residents to partake in community activities such as dog registration, blood donation, and mental wellness initiatives. The council also discussed the importance of proper recycling, snow removal assistance for seniors, and safe driving during winter weather.
