- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Revere Disabilities Commission discussed potential initiatives, including a snow program for seniors and disabled residents, and the logistics of providing transportation to polls on election days. The meeting also covered the use of grants to improve accessibility, community input for the George B. Kalala Community Center, and plans for an “All Abilities Day at the Beach.”
One of the topics was the enthusiastic proposal to collaborate with a council on a snow program similar to Somerville’s, aimed at benefiting Revere’s senior and disabled community members through social engagement and check-ins. The program’s potential for fostering inclusion and community support was a focal point of the discussion. The commission saw merit in this effort and expressed a commitment to ensuring participation in future communications and meetings connected to this initiative.
Transportation to election polls for individuals with disabilities was another point of debate. The commission acknowledged that while it is not common for cities and towns to offer this service, it is typically provided by political candidates. The group weighed the challenges and possible strategies for facilitating this service, which could enhance civic engagement among residents with disabilities.
Another agenda item of importance was the survey regarding the George B. Kalala Community Center at the Garfield School. The commission underscored the value of resident feedback, particularly from seniors, people with disabilities, and families, to understand their needs and experiences. This feedback is intended to help identify and address any accessibility issues at the community center.
The meeting also involved a discussion on the Disability Policy Consortium’s monthly Zoom meeting, where the Mod Grant program was a central topic. The program, provided by the Mass Office on Disabilities, offers grants for disability-related projects. A debate unfolded over the practicality of the grant application process, including concerns about the timing of grant awards and the impact on municipalities. The challenges faced by contractors and inspectors in meeting project deadlines were also discussed. Members called for exploring legislative solutions to provide more flexibility for municipalities in utilizing grant funds.
The commission also addressed the planning of an inclusive event called “All Abilities Day at the Beach” at Revere Beach, which would be modeled after a similar event by Triangle Inc. at Constitution Beach. The commission members shared concerns about incidents involving service dogs and unleashed dogs in the neighborhood, which led to a reminder about residents contacting the commission’s office for assistance.
