- Meeting Overview:
At a recent North Hunterdon-Voorhees School Board meeting, discussions arose around the reconsideration process for school materials, the upcoming transition to New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) policies, and the adoption of the 2024-2025 preliminary budget. These topics, along with updates on the Polytech project, school achievements, and upcoming events, were central to the board’s agenda.
One of the most issues addressed at the meeting was the reconsideration process for school materials. This discussion was sparked by a proposed change to remove the word “Library” from the title of the reconsideration form. The aim was to create a more generic tool that could apply to any school material, not just library resources. The board debated the role of public input in challenging instructional materials, with varying opinions on whether a single parent’s objection should lead to a full reconsideration process affecting all students. The Policy and Security Committee reported on two different forms for material reconsideration – one for public requests and another for committee use as a rubric.
The upcoming transition to policies from the NJSBA also featured prominently in the discussions. Concerns were raised about the potential loss of customized policies and the need for a cautious approach to adopting a more standardized policy system. Moreover, they discussed concerns over the workload this transition would impose on the board and staff.
The Seal of Biliteracy program was discussed, highlighting its success in recognizing students proficient in English and an additional language. The district used Title IV funds to pay for the test, allowing 67 seniors to earn the seal this year. The board also reviewed updates on standardized testing, including the NA assessment and AP testing, and discussed the impact of changes in the AP policy on the number of students taking AP exams.
During the meeting, the Finance committee presented the preliminary budget, identifying key factors driving budget increases such as payroll, health insurance, security, liability insurance, and transportation. They noted the reliance on revenue from the new Polytech building tuition to aid future budgets and discussed the proposed send-receive contract for Bloomsbury regionalization and its implications for transportation. The acceptance of a book donation and an NJ SDA emergent needs Grant were also topics of finance-related discussion.
The public comment section of the meeting featured residents coming forth with their perspectives, notably on the matter of book donations from Gilson, an organization supporting LGBTQ youth. Amy Barrett, a resident, advocated for the books. Additionally, the public urged the board to continue working with the principles to monitor and address bias acts, hate crimes, and intimidation in the schools.
The board called for a motion and second to approve action item 10.1, authorizing the adoption of the 2024-2025 preliminary budget, which was unanimously voted in favor by all members. This set the groundwork for the district’s financial planning for the upcoming year. The annual budget hearing and regular meeting were scheduled for May 7th, 2024, at the district administration office.
Additional discussions included the completion of drainage work under the parking lot, which was seen as a solution for the parking challenges posed by the workers on the Polytech project site. The board also addressed the maintenance of classroom libraries, the potential costs related to retaining walls at the courts, and the possibility of seeking reimbursement from Polytech or the contractor for significant expenses.
