- Meeting Overview:
The Lyndhurst School Board meeting addressed significant infrastructure issues and showcased student accomplishments, including the high school Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter’s success and the upcoming LCAP program for seniors. A student representative reported on varying lighting in school hallways and requested a closed bathroom in the music wing be reopened. The state monitor affirmed the district’s positive financial position and supported the preliminary 2024-2025 budget. A board member raised ethical concerns regarding board votes on financial matters involving immediate family members.
At the recent Lyndhurst School Board meeting, a member highlighted concerns regarding the school’s infrastructure. The bathroom area is under scrutiny, with potential issues stemming from galvanized pipes causing low water flow, necessitating expensive repairs. In response to a student’s report, the board was informed of the varying lighting conditions in hallways, which has been a source of discomfort for students. The student representative suggested documenting the issue through photographs to assist the board in addressing it. Additionally, the student mentioned the inconvenience caused by a persistently locked bathroom in the music wing, advocating for its reopening to ease congestion in other restrooms.
The meeting also celebrated the high school’s FBLA chapter, which had an impressive performance at a recent competition in Atlantic City, with several groups placing in the top ranks and the potential for national competition attendance. The LCAP program was acknowledged as a promising opportunity for seniors to experience college-level classes, with the initiative garnering positive feedback from the student body.
Despite this positive financial report, a board member voted against the budget resolution, citing the burden on taxpayers and calling for an ethical review due to alleged impropriety involving board members voting on financial resolutions that might benefit their immediate family members. The concern was put forth for review with the intention of having feedback or a resolution by the next board meeting.
The meeting proceeded with recognition of students’ achievements, including awards in art and video categories from the New Jersey Association for Gifted Children. The student recognized for the “Unsung Hero” award was commended for her inclusive actions towards a special needs student.
