- Meeting Overview:
During a recent Ormond Beach City Commission meeting, community figures were honored, including Debbie Kruck-Forster, founder of Ormond Strong, who was presented with a key to the city for her work with military veterans and first responders. Additionally, Sergeant John Dovine and Sergeant Jay Brennan received Proclamations for their service in the Ormond Beach Police Department. Aside from the recognitions, the Commission engaged in a substantive discussion on the potential solicitation process for Property and Casualty Insurance, debating between issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) and appointing an agent or broker of record.
One of the highlights of the meeting was the presentation of a key to the city to Debbie Kruck-Forster, in acknowledgment of her dedication to military veterans and first responders through her organization, Ormond Strong. The Mayor, whose leadership was commended by a member of the public during audience remarks, led the presentation ceremony.
Following the commendations, the Commission tackled the topic of the city’s Property and Casualty Insurance procurement. The discussion revolved around whether to initiate an RFP or to continue with an insurance agent or broker of record. The City Attorney recommended the RFP method. However, the debate also recognized the value of the specialized expertise offered by an established broker or agent. The City Attorney’s recommendation did not result in an immediate resolution.
The meeting proceeded with other business, including a report from the City Manager on various city projects. Updates on a recent fire incident at the Performing Arts Center (PAC), drainage projects, and pedestrian safety improvements were provided. While the City Attorney had no comments, the Deputy Mayor and Commissioner Tolland both expressed gratitude for the positive remarks concerning city employees, illustrating a focus on community feedback and employee recognition during the meeting.
Commissioner Sargent brought to attention the relationship with the local school board, expressing dissatisfaction and recommending a review of all contracts between the city and the school board. This action emphasizes the Commission’s concern over the governance and communication of the school board with regard to certain unspecified matters.
The Commission also discussed community engagement, with one member highlighting a successful educational event at Badner Park where a local Brownie troop learned about native plants and pollinators. Another member shared insights on the potential uses of drones, gleaned from the National League of Cities conference, and the availability of police grants for recruitment and retention. The meeting touched on the importance of community festivals and gatherings.
Commissioner Persis took the opportunity to express thanks to a resident and acknowledge the dedication of community members. The Mayor, too, appreciated the commissioners’ participation in the conference and stressed the importance of addressing homelessness.
The session concluded with a call for a meeting with the superintendent to discuss the school board’s handling of certain issues.
