- Meeting Overview:
In the latest Lake Como Borough Council meeting, progress was made concerning the construction of a new borough hall. After careful deliberation and an extensive bid evaluation process, the council awarded a contract for architectural services to D’Arari and Iino Architects for the design of the new municipal building. Additionally, the council approved a contract for the demolition of the existing structure at 703 18th Avenue to Greg Lurch Demolition Excavating LLC, paving the way for the new development.
The selection of D’Arari and Iino Architects for the new borough hall project was a key focus of the meeting. The firm, chosen from five candidates after an in-depth interview and vetting process, will be tasked with designing the new municipal complex at a contract price of $170,700. The council emphasized the firm’s impressive project portfolio and technical expertise as primary reasons for their selection.
In conjunction with the architectural planning, the council moved forward with the demolition of the current property on the proposed site. With a quote of $39,500, Greg Lurch Demolition Excavating LLC was selected to undertake this initial phase of the project.
Other topics of importance included the implementation of a stormwater control ordinance in response to state directives to better manage flood risks and adapt to climate change. The ordinance, which aims to be in full effect by the end of 2026, replaces the existing chapter on stormwater management and aligns with the state’s amended rules.
The meeting also highlighted the borough’s receipt of its first installment of tax revenue from a recently passed temporary residence tax, which applies to rentals like Airbnb, amounting to over $5,000 for December and January. The winter revenue is expected to be a precursor to potentially higher earnings during the summer months.
A contract for garbage collection services was awarded to Lisa Waste Services of Tinton Falls for $669,000. Despite being a substantial increase from previous contracts, the council justified the cost due to escalated expenses in equipment, workers’ compensation, and hospitalization insurance.
Lastly, the council approved a project completion closing statement for improvements made to Lake Como under a Municipal Open Space Program Grant, which provided $200,000 for the project. This marks the fulfillment of the borough’s requirements to receive these funds.
