- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Coral Gables City Commission meeting, the commission undertook a review of several properties for local historic designation. Notably, a house on Milan Avenue became the focal point of a debate on whether it should be designated as a local historic property. The discussion delved into the architectural significance and historical and cultural value of the property, with a focus on its Spanish style elements and the extent to which alterations over time may have impacted its integrity.
The commission also considered the potential historic designation for properties on Majorca Avenue and Aragon Avenue, with discussions centering on their historical, cultural, and architectural significance. The commission approved the historic designation of two properties on Majorca Avenue, acknowledging their contribution to the vision of Coral Gables as a Mediterranean-inspired city. A property on Avenue received unanimous approval for the historic designation based on its Mediterranean Revival style and its status as one of the earliest homes in the city.
In a related vein, the commission reviewed applications for the issuance of special certificates of appropriateness for additions and alterations to several historically designated properties. These included proposals for 1031 Alhambra Circle, 1615 Country Club Prado, and Sevilla Avenue. Each property’s application was scrutinized.
Particularly contentious was the proposal for the property on Tendia Avenue, which called for the demolition of an original auxiliary structure and the construction of new additions and site work. The commission expressed concerns about the proposed addition’s width and prominence relative to the existing historic structure and whether the new aluminum storefront system harmonized with the historic fabric. The commission did not reach a decision during the meeting.
The commission also had a lengthy discussion regarding the property on Tendia Avenue, with a speaker advocating for demolition of a detached garage, citing alterations that had compromised its historical significance and the hardship imposed on the homeowners by its preservation. Furthermore, the commission heard arguments against the historic designation of 1221 Milan Avenue. The property owners and their architect challenged the historical significance and architectural integrity of the property.
