- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Saddle Brook Town Council meeting, issues such as community recognition, infrastructure, public safety, and event planning were addressed. The meeting was noteworthy for the honoring of local women during Women’s History Month and the diverse array of topics that the council dealt with, ranging from park safety to the appointment and salary of the business administrator.
At the forefront of the meeting, several women were honored for their contributions to the community in honor of Women’s History Month. Among them were Rachel Adams Duffy, known for her advocacy for people with disabilities, businesswoman Helena Straback for her involvement in various causes, Sharon Aano, the president of the Saddlebrook Women’s Club, and D.B., a dedicated advocate for the special needs community. Eileen Pino was also recognized for her long-time volunteer service and role as a retired deputy court administrator. The mayor extended gratitude to these individuals.
The council meeting progressed with discussions addressing community concerns. Notably, residents expressed frustration regarding parking issues caused by a nearby factory, with complaints about noise and garbage. Despite the council’s assurances of having taken steps to mitigate the issues, the residents remained unconvinced, urging further action.
Another point of contention was the proposed location of an inclusive playground in the county park. Safety, traffic issues, and the impact on nearby residents were paramount concerns. Residents argued that the playground’s proximity to a busy road and inadequate parking could pose dangers. The proposed fence height was also questioned for safety adequacy. Concerns extended to potential traffic problems that could affect emergency vehicle access if the park’s entrance was relocated. Additionally, the need for soil retesting and a traffic assessment for the proposed playground site was brought up.
Community services and events were also discussed, including an upcoming Earth Day planting and cleanup event at Tri Centennial Park and a Ramadan celebration. The latter received positive feedback. However, a resident raised concerns about the lack of progress on scooter regulations, citing safety risks and calling for police involvement. This concern was coupled with dissatisfaction regarding the reassessment district process and the resulting increase in property assessments.
A debate over the business administrator’s salary ensued, with differing opinions on its justification when compared to other jurisdictions. Budget planning, senior tax freeze programs, and grant funding allocations for the fire department and road resurfacing projects were updated by the council. The submission of a Community Development Block Grant application and the selection of roads for resurfacing were also covered.
The council celebrated community achievements, such as the acknowledgment of two residents achieving the rank of Eagle Scouts and Harry Reid’s 65 years of service in the Ambulance Corps. The council also expressed appreciation for the volunteerism of all Ambulance Corps members and highlighted the success of the Read Across America event.
In addressing various resident complaints, including speeding and parking issues, the council mentioned ongoing efforts to find solutions. New police officers were sworn in, new Veteran banners were ordered, and artist Noel Paba was thanked for his artwork displayed in the town’s lobby. The council also promoted “A Portrait of Our Past,” encouraged sign-ups for Township alerts, and sent well wishes for upcoming holidays.
Lastly, the council members supported the efforts to address concerns regarding the park project, congratulated the high school spirit leaders, and emphasized due diligence in the appointment and salary of the business administrator and tax assessment matters. Updates on the progress of a scooter ordinance, lighting ordinance, and discussions around the playground’s location were provided. A council member recused themselves from voting on a bill due to a potential conflict of interest.
