Stuart Community Discusses Innovative Seaweed-Based Construction
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Stuart Community Redevelopment Agency, discussions centered on a groundbreaking environmental initiative that could have far-reaching implications for coastal cleanup efforts and low-income housing. The initiative involves the transformation of sargassum, an invasive type of seaweed that plagues beaches, into durable construction bricks for building homes.
The issue of sargassum has become increasingly pressing as massive waves of the seaweed have led to respiratory problems and costly cleanups. Recognizing the potential in this crisis, Omar Vasquez has developed a method to convert the seaweed into construction material. His bricks, known as Sara blocks, are composed of approximately 40% sargassum and are touted as being strong enough to withstand hurricanes. This innovation not only offers a solution to the sargassum problem but also provides sustainable housing for low-income families.
Omar and his team gather the sargassum from beaches, such as those in Puerto Morelos near Cancun, where hotels pay for the removal of the unsightly seaweed. The process of creating these eco-friendly bricks involves drying the sargassum, grinding it into a fine powder, mixing it with repurposed dirt from construction sites, and forming it into blocks. The precise recipe remains a closely guarded secret.
Since 2018, Omar has built more than 40 homes using Sara blocks, including some that have been given away to those in need. The success of these homes is attributed to the insulating properties of seaweed, which keep interiors cool during summer and retain heat in winter. Omar’s business, Vetto Blue Green, primarily earns revenue from selling plants and cleaning beaches, but the sale of Sara blocks and construction of homes are significant aspects of his operations.
The problem of sargassum extends beyond the shores of Mexico, affecting areas across North America, including Florida and Texas. As the phenomenon garners international attention, Omar has shared his insights through platforms such as TED Talks and Shark Tank Mexico. The potential for franchising the Sara block recipe to other businesses is being explored, highlighting the scalability of this eco-conscious enterprise.
