- Meeting Overview:
The Newbury Council on Aging recently convened to address multiple topics, with one notable issue being the space and accessibility challenges at Peta Hall. The venue, often used for the Council’s events, faces constraints that are impacting the success of programs aimed at the elderly community. The meeting also highlighted the accomplishments of the Friends of the Newbury Council on Aging, particularly during the St. Patrick’s Day luncheon, and discussed the importance of volunteers and the need for additional support in medical appointment transportation.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the limitations of Peta Hall as a venue for the Council’s events. Despite the hall’s capacity being greater than what is currently utilized, members discussed the need for better accommodation of rolling walkers and wheelchairs to ensure safe and efficient access for all participants. The director noted thon people were on a waitlist for the recent St. Patrick’s Day event. The challenge of room acoustics was also brought up, emphasizing the community’s desire for live music at gatherings.
The Friends of the Newbury Council on Aging received commendation for their successful fundraising efforts during the St. Patrick’s Day event. Their involvement not only facilitated a well-attended event but also contributed to the financial support necessary for the Council’s activities. The importance of volunteers was underscored in the director’s report, which attributed much of the event’s success to their contributions.
Looking beyond the immediate concerns of event space, the Council discussed the final year of the ARP tax aid program offered at the site, which has been popular among the elderly residents. The foot clinic was mentioned as another well-received program, along with an upcoming balance assessment session. Other future events and activities detailed included game nights, watercolor classes, a traveling chef lunch, a poetry workshop, a volunteer appreciation lunch, and educational sessions on CPR, AED, and basic first aid.
The Friends board took the opportunity to update on their ongoing activities, elaborating on their fundraising strategies, which include 50/50 raffles and monthly drawings. The board is also planning future events such as yard sales and basket raffles to continue their support for the Council’s initiatives.
Volunteerism was a recurring theme throughout the meeting, with a particular focus on the need for individuals to assist with medical appointments.
Ensuring that the elderly have access to a space that accommodates their needs is essential for the continuation of the enriching programs that the Council offers. The meeting concluded with the scheduling of the next session, where these issues will likely be revisited, and a motion to adjourn was made.
