- Meeting Overview:
The South Hunterdon School Board recently convened to discuss several issues affecting the district’s future, including the introduction of new educational programs, the reconfiguration of grades, and the expansion of the preschool program. Time was devoted to the evaluation and nomination of a new board member, Jennifer Bachelor, who underscored the importance of community engagement and the representation of diverse student needs.
A central topic during the meeting was the detailed presentation and discussion on the implementation of the new English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum, particularly the Wit and Wisdom program. This comprehensive curriculum integrates various literacy standards and is designed to build knowledge through art, music, and authentic texts. The program, which aligns with the latest educational standards, was presented as an asset-based practice aimed at leveraging the diversity within classrooms. Teachers who piloted the program provided positive feedback, highlighting the benefits and improvements in the student learning experience.
The presentation also covered the introduction of Hegerty and Foundations programs, focusing on phonics awareness from pre-K to second grade, and the Orton Gillingham approach for reading instruction. The board emphasized the importance of these programs in improving students’ informational text comprehension, which is increasingly relevant given the shift in state testing, AP tests, and SATs towards informational texts.
Another topic was the potential reconfiguration of grades within the district, with discussions revolving around the idea of having fourth grade join the fifth and sixth grades to minimize transitions between buildings. This debate extended to the promises made during a previous referendum, specifically concerning the sale of West Howell and the allocation of funds. The board grappled with concerns about transparency and planning, as members sought to provide clear answers and develop a cogent plan for the district’s future.
The discussion also extended to the district’s preschool program. Concerns were raised about the documentation submitted to the state regarding the number of students in the program and the accuracy of representation to the public. There was debate about the preschool expansion and the discrepancy between projected student numbers and available classrooms. The board plans to seek community input through informational sessions to make educated decisions about the program for the 2025-2026 school year.
In addition to the educational programs, the board addressed the reinstatement of the varsity wrestling program after a resident, Tim Eberly, highlighted the community’s strong interest and the potential for developing a feeder program and girls’ wrestling in the future.
Public comments also touched upon issues such as the renovation of the Lambertville Public School in a flood zone, the displacement of athletic fields, and busing problems affecting the softball team’s practice time. Additionally, the hiring of an assistant coach for the wrestling program was discussed, drawing attention to the specific needs of the sports programs in the district.
The meeting included updates from various committees, with the Buildings, Grounds, Transportation, Finance, and Safety committee presenting a preliminary budget and items up for sale. The Personnel committee reported on staff appointments and reviewed the non-tenure process, while the Curriculum and Technology committee discussed technology evaluations and the use of AI in educational programming. The Policy committee focused on policies for resident and non-resident students and the education of homeless children and youth.
The South Hunterdon Regional Education Association invited the board to the annual family literacy night at West Howell School, emphasizing the importance of community events in promoting literacy.
During the second public comment period, a community member raised concerns about the representation of Lambertville board members in committee chair positions and the absence of a chair for the Policy committee. The board acknowledged the concern and committed to reviewing committee positions moving forward.
