Nashoba Regional School Committee Names Nashoba Regional High School a Pathways Designated School
- Meeting Overview:
At the latest Nashoba Regional School Committee meeting, developments were discussed, including the designation of Nashoba Regional High School as an Innovation Pathways school for business and finance, as well as advanced manufacturing and engineering. This milestone was achieved through the receipt of a Skills Capital Grant, marking a progressive step for the school in providing real-world, experiential learning opportunities for students.
The Pathways program stands out as a forward-thinking initiative aimed at creating robust postsecondary options for students through strong partnerships with employers. It aligns with the district’s strategic plan and the portrait of a Nashoba graduate, fostering a connection between school-based learning and practical, hands-on experiences in various industries. The program focuses on integrating technical courses in the freshman and sophomore years, followed by advanced courses and culminating in a 100-hour internship and capstone project.
During the meeting, the committee members discussed the potential for future growth, indicating that the school might expand the program to include other areas such as environmental and life sciences, healthcare, and social assistance. Outreach and engagement efforts related to the Pathways program were also highlighted, with interactions involving students, families, guidance counselors, and local businesses. Plans to create a student ambassador program and engage with school councils and the CPAC were mentioned, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the program.
Moreover, the eligibility for the new pathway program was a topic of discussion, focusing on eighth graders and current tenth graders. The meeting addressed a question about the timing of the course sign-up deadline and the related Zoom meeting. The Capstone project for seniors was clarified to be a credit-bearing course that meets graduation requirements.
The committee unanimously approved a donation from the retiree School Volunteers Association to the Florence Sawyer school, intended for STEM-related extracurricular activities.
Aside from the Pathways program, there was a discussion about the school district’s efforts to address the social-emotional learning needs of students, particularly in light of the pandemic. The presentation by Dr. Epstein focused on the importance of understanding student behavior as a communication tool and the need for teachers to manage difficult behaviors effectively. The approach emphasized by Dr. Epstein was one of recognizing behavior problems as indications of skill struggles and incrementally teaching and developing these skills, akin to addressing learning disabilities.
The meeting also covered the approval of an amendment to the construction manager agreement for the installation of the geothermal system at the new high school. The motion, passed unanimously, authorized the superintendent to sign the amendment and granted the school building committee the authority to approve all future project-related contracts and amendments, with the stipulation that oversight and monitoring would be provided by the school committee.
Additionally, the committee discussed policy amendments related to technology use in schools, including the acceptable use of digital resources and cell phone policies. The need for clarity and consistency in these policies was underscored, with a focus on faculty and staff understanding and adherence.
Furthermore, the budget was a point of discussion, with an emphasis on not exceeding the total approved project budget of $2,241,741 for the construction project to avoid requesting additional funds from voters.
