- Meeting Overview:
The Medford School Committee recently engaged in an extensive discussion on various transportation issues facing the district, including the potential of conducting surveys to better understand transportation preferences, the costs of outsourcing versus in-house transportation, the scarcity of bus drivers, and the overall impact on student safety and equity. The topics of late busing, overcrowded buses, high school parking, and the implications for a new high school construction were also deliberated.
One of the primary concerns addressed was the confusion stemming from multiple transportation surveys being conducted simultaneously. The district had launched its own survey, while Safe Routes to Schools had initiated another. Committee members questioned the district’s approach to data gathering and expressed the need to refine survey questions in the future. The goal of these surveys is to collect feedback on transportation services and identify obstacles that students and parents face.
The committee conversed at length about the shortage of bus drivers and the resulting overcrowded buses. This issue is exacerbated by the fact that high school students currently do not have yellow bus service, leading to debates over the merits of introducing such a service. Concerns were raised about the financial implications and potential underutilization of the buses.
Regarding late busing, questions were raised about the necessity for different tiers of late buses and the timing of after-school activities that may not coincide with available transportation options. The committee recognized the need for a comprehensive survey to gather insights on these issues.
The discussion moved to the notion of equity in transportation access, noting the stigma that may be attached to riding the bus and its differing impacts across demographics. The conversation highlighted the importance of ensuring that all students have fair access to transportation.
The complexities of relying on MBTA buses for school transportation were also discussed, particularly the difficulties that arise during certain times of the year. In response to the bus driver shortage, skepticism was expressed regarding the true nature of the shortage, with some attributing it to low wages. A comparison was made with another school district that had successfully taken transportation in-house as an alternative solution.
The potential changes in high school parking due to the construction of a new high school were debated, alongside the impact of the city’s infrastructure decisions, such as the absence of protected bike lanes, on students’ transportation methods. The committee was also concerned with the high costs associated with transporting students out of district and the implications of the transportation assessment on the planning of the new high school.
During the meeting, the student advisory council brought up five transportation-related concerns: safety on bus lines, designated arrival and departure positions, insufficient buses for certain areas, inconsistent bus schedules, and the need to gather data on current transportation habits. These insights added to the committee’s understanding of the transportation issues from the students’ perspective.
