The Union School Board meeting brought to light developments within the school district, including the approval of new budgets with an unprecedented increase in state aid, the recognition of high-achieving students and athletes, and the implementation of community partnerships and programs. These topics, along with the remembrance of two beloved former teachers, were among one notable issues addressed.
In financial matters, the board dissected the proposed budget, which featured a notable increase in funding. This increase in funding is anticipated to have a substantial impact on the district’s programs and operations in the upcoming year. The board also discussed cost drivers and strategies to reduce expenses, particularly in contracted services and transportation. Moreover, the budget presentation outlined the appropriation side of the budget, which showed an overall increase of roughly 7.49% over the previous year’s budget.

Another focal point of the meeting was the acknowledgment of the district’s students for their academic and extracurricular accomplishments. The board recognized two high school seniors who were awaiting Ivy League decisions and scholarships, celebrating their achievements and taking photographs with their families. The superintendent and high school principal praised students with the highest GPAs for not only their academic excellence but also for their personal qualities and motivation to excel every day.
The athletic achievements of student athletes were also lauded, with impressive performances in winter sports such as basketball, wrestling, and swimming receiving special mention. The wrestling coach was recognized for his role in revitalizing the wrestling program. In addition, the meeting served as a platform to introduce a new girls flag football team, expanding the district’s athletic offerings.
Community engagement and partnerships formed a key part of the discourse, as the board discussed collaboration with South from TV34 and the Chamber of Commerce to create a job board for students.
The meeting also included updates on educational programs and initiatives, including the approval of Title One summer program locations, the New Jersey Department of Education’s identification of schools needing comprehensive or targeted support, and the approval of funds for mental health screening in schools. It was also mentioned that Jefferson School and Franklin Elementary School had met the criteria to exit comprehensive support improvement.
The legal and operations committees presented resolutions that were approved by the board, including the approval of a settlement agreement and the acceptance of funds for emerging and infectious diseases. The operations committee also covered the approval of security drill bus evacuation reports.
The Personnel committee presented resolutions addressing new hires, extra pay, transfers, and professional development, among other items. The Technology committee provided updates on state testing and the ongoing improvements to the school district’s infrastructure, including internet provider investigation and classroom telephone system installations.

Furthermore, a member of the public urged for a review of the senior options program, particularly in regards to special needs students.
