- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Revere City Council meeting, a issue that garnered attention was the motion to address the safety hazard posed by loose wires hanging around the city. This matter, alongside discussions on various development projects, including amendments to the zoning map and the construction of new residential units, marked the key focal points of the session.
The matter of loose wires throughout Revere neighborhoods took center stage, reflecting both safety concerns and aesthetic considerations raised by the council members. With unanimous approval, the council moved forward with a motion requesting telecommunications providers to remove excess wires completely when cutting lines, rather than leaving them wrapped around telephone poles. The council’s decisive action on this issue highlighted their commitment to maintaining the city’s safety and visual appeal.
In addition to the loose wires concern, the council addressed several development projects that promise to shape the city’s future landscape. One of the significant projects discussed was the removal of the hotel condition from the Overlook Ridge overlay District by Overlook Ridge LLC, with intentions to build retail spaces and further residential development. The proponents of the project emphasized the reduced need for a hotel, the importance of neighborhood amenities, and the removal of the parking reduction request.
Another noteworthy development included the construction of a 9-unit townhouse development on River Street, set to replace the building currently occupied by the Sons of Italy. The council member representing the ward where the development is proposed showed strong support for the project, citing the need for market-rate housing options in the community. The proposed townhouses are intended to offer an affordable housing option and facilitate the transition from commercial to multifamily and then to single-family areas.
The council also heard a request by the city planner to amend the zoning map, which involved removing one parcel from the Conservation District and adding several parcels to it. This zoning change aims to reflect the city’s conservation priorities accurately.
Furthermore, utility infrastructure requests came into consideration. National Grid and Verizon sought approval to relocate a jointly owned pole to accommodate new construction, while National Grid also proposed the construction of a line of underground electric conduits from the Beachmont Avenue parking lot to poll number 2589 on Winthrop Avenue.
On the topic of public services, the reinstatement of the city’s Christmas parade was approved with plans to engage local businesses and rename the parade in honor of a community member. The council also approved increased police patrols on Thorndike and Hastings streets in response to concerns about speeding motorists.
Addressing community and environmental concerns, the council discussed a proposed development project on Rosetti Street, which would consist of two-bedroom units with parking spaces. The need for larger units to accommodate families and address potential flooding issues was also considered.
A petition by Mullen Highway development company was approved, allowing the construction of telecommunications conduits and associated manholes on Washburn Avenue. The company’s representative highlighted the consolidation effort to minimize disruption during the installation process.
Other motions included awarding a certificate of commendation to individuals who located a missing autistic girl and her dog, assessing a 15-minute grace period button on parking meters, and drafting regulations for the indoor storage of electric vehicles due to fire hazard concerns. The maintenance of dog parks and the dissemination of information on Naloxone boxes and opioid settlement funds were also discussed.
The council engaged in a preliminary discussion on potential zoning amendments related to the implementation and expansion of medical and adult-use marijuana in the city, focusing on the economic benefits such establishments could bring.
